In my podcast A Smaller Life, I talk to makers and business owners in my industry (and sometimes beyond) about making conscious choices and growing your brand by actually going smaller. In this episode, I welcome Jonna van 't Hof, she's a legal and business advisor at BBK (Beroepsvereniging van Beeldend Kunstenaars - Professional Association of Visual Artists). Jonna reacted on my Instagram stories about fair wages and prices for your work as a professional knitter. She was so specific about it that I needed to know more,I contacted her and as it turns out she's a professional in the field. It took me 2 seconds to invite her to be my guest on the podcast and l'm so glad she obliged. Jonna advises visual artists on legal and business matters and knits in her spare time.We had such an in-depth discussion about fair wages for self employed creatives. And fair and sustainable prices for handmade items. When do you call yourself a professional artist or crafter, is there a difference. How do you move from creating for fun to becoming a professional and what steps do you need to take. What I loved about this conversation is that it's all  in your hands. It's a mindset if nothing else. Some of the best artists are self educated."When you think it, if you have the right mindset, you can become it"A Professional Artist is someone who makes autonomous work you don't necessarily need an art education. Any artist is good enough and worthy enough of GOOD payment! Everyone who sees theirselves as a professional artist can become a member in the union. FIND THE TOP 10 TAKEAWAYS on www.ja-wol.com One (!!) pair of hand knit socks should cost about €254,- not €20,-!! This is where you’ll find JonnaInstagram @jonnahofThe artist union where she works www.bbknet.nl  (Beroepsvereniging van Beeldend Kunstenaars)Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce Netherlands)JOIN BBB 'BUILDING BETTER BUSINESSES',Our NEW group for professionals in knitting, yarn dyers, shop owners, designers, you ar all welcome to learn and share from and with each other and find ways to make our businesses better. If that isn't compelling enough to learn more, I don't know what would be!  Every human should be able to read and hear every thing we do as marketers. Man chops through apples while juggling knives for Guinness record   Siblings Set World Record for the Highest Combined Age, 1042 Years Athlete does 64 hand-release pushups in one minute for new record Stories of the Week Story 1 Arminians Storm God's Throne Room To Protest Election Summary:A gang of rogue Arminians has broken into God's throne room in order to protest the doctrine of election, sources confirmed Thursday. Hordes of the anti-Calvinist protesters stormed the gates of heaven before angels were forced to fall back and barricade the throne room.   "Down with the predestined, sovereign election of God!" cried one man from Florida as he burst into the throne room wearing a buffalo hat. "This whole thing is rigged! Divine interference!" Arminians were seen scaling the walls of heaven. One managed to hang a "Who is able to resist His will?" banner on the gates of the place, while others busted in and started roaming the streets of gold looking for the Lord's throne room. A few made it in but were instantly killed by being in the presence of the Almighty God, sparking further protests. There was very little looting, though a few Chick-fil-A sandwiches were taken. At publishing time, Arminians had suggested the protesters were actually Calvinists disguised as Arminians to make them look bad. Calvinists say there is no proof of this as most of the protesters had neither beards nor smug looks on their faces.   The Real Story: Oh wait, the capitol building got stormed too? The capitol building was stormed, presumably by pro-Trump fanatics who think the 2020 election was rigged.  -A man in a buffalo hat was there and another man walked off with a podium. One man ransacked Nancy Pelosi’s office.  -Also, in related news, The Babylon Bee slack channel simply titled #Theology because #ArguingAboutCalvinism was too long, has kicked off with many fiery screeds about free will, election, predestination, and the love of God. -Imagine if Trump had won, none of this would have happened. this is Antifa at the capitol: -Antifa leader “Brothers, fret we may, but a fair election has ended and we must accept the results, though they were not in our favor. Lay down your bricks. Remove the vodka soaked rags from your molotov cocktails and drink with me as we accept these results like men. We shall leave the Capitol unmolested, we will don no buffalo garments, for we are not like those savages. Yes, we have a line we will not cross, and this is it.”  Then they sing an ancient Antifa war song about honor, tragedy, and losing with dignity..  Sad part of the story, in addition to the erosion of our norms and culture, was that a woman Ashli Babbitt was shot dead by the police, several other rioters died from medical emergencies, and a capitol police officer, Brian Sicknick, was killed in the riot at the Capitol.   See also: Our NEW animation about Who Was Really Behind The Attack On The Capitol Story 2 After Being Kicked Off Social Media, Trump Forced To Go Door To Door And Shout 'RIGGED ELECTION!'   Summary:  After being permanently banned from social media, President Trump has been forced to knock on doors across the country, one door at a time. If anyone opens the door, he will shout one of his classic lines such as "RIGGED ELECTION!" or "Hillary is a loser! There are many ways to test our content. We can do A/B testing of email subjects and different calls to action... But HOW do you test visuals? Historically, the only real way to do that has been through market research (I don't say this on the show, but I personally have been paid a BUNCH of money to take part in market research studies!), which is expensive. What if there was a company using AI that can give you data on what visuals will resonate with your audiences? What if it was a SaaS product that would save you a ton of money - you'd jump at it, right? We're not "promoting a product here" -- we don't do that -- we are sharing a NEW and unique solution to an old time issue. Also, Christina is the queen of #MarketingTwitter, so it made perfect sense for us to also talk about the platform we both love to bits. This is a GOOD one, y'all! Hello friends, welcome to EP 49 of BORP- we are very excited to have you joining us today! As we transition firmly into Autumn, Tristan fills more and more with existential dread as the onset of winter approaches. However he does get to show off more of his sweaters. Mickey has elected to take a brief sabbatical from drinking in hopes of living his best life and having a shinier beard. You can't see because it's a podcast but it is absolutely working, oh wow. As such, it was just Tristan that brought a beer this time (9:20) which was an Xtra Pale Ale from one of the newer Vancouver spots, Academy Brewing. For our album pick (21:05) Mickey selected perhaps the most atypical and out there album we've ever had on the show. We listen to the minimalist piano ballad, spoken word collaboration by Chilly Gonzales and Jarvis Cocker titled Room 29. We debate if the album, focusing on the excesses of Hollywood, is deeply funny or morbidly sad. We landed on it being a lot of both. For movie time (1:20:35) Tristan selected one of the very best and progressive comedies of 2019, Booksmart. Our New and Noteworthy (1:48:25) selections cover tracks from Max D, No Joy, Molly Birch, and Nubya Garcia. For Three Questions (2:19:27) Mickey attempts to commune with Winter Tristan and it goes about as well as expected. Find the show on Apple podcasts and Spotify. Y'all, email marketing is no joke. Social media is important, but it's rented land, which you'll hear about straight-away. Rob and Kennedy are our guests on this episode -- two guys who are epic and successful in their individual spaces who carved out a niche (which they would pronounce NEESH, since they're British!) in email marketing because they had so much success with it. Email marketing is about making sure people have all the information they need for WHEN they want to buy... we should be using email to nurture those relationships. Our guests... Rob & Kennedy are from Newcastle Upon Tyne in the North east of England You might know them as hosts of the very entertaining podcast, The Email Marketing Show, or as the founders of the survey platform that makes you sales, ResponseSuite. Red-haired Rob is a comedy stage hypnotist, and platinum-haired Kennedy a psychological mind reader (or mentalist as they call it in the US), who have spent almost 18 years each relying on their skills of getting into other people’s heads to carve out successful careers in show-business. Now as founders of EmailMarketingHeroes.com, Rob and Kennedy’s mission is to save the world from that grubby old-fashioned email marketing we’ve all grown to loathe, and give others the tools to become the Email Marketing Heroes in their small businesses. Rob and Kennedy are here to help you make more sales and grow your business by sending more emails that people love receiving. Goal stated by Kennedy: "Let's try to become less crap than we were yesterday." My absolute favorite tips were about the subject line and the preview bits! I'm not going to tell you why... when you listen you'll know the reason. For sure, this is one of our most resourceful episodes yet. Email marketing has been bumped off for social media, but it's unquestionably more important. Megan used to "do email" (no, seriously, she got hired by a dot-com without a title)... and this chat was so enlightening! Things. Have. Changed. Featuring exclusive interviews with the late Rip Taylor, who passed away in October of 2019, viewers will hear his story for the first time in his own words.  From his early days as an orphaned child in Washington DC to serving in World War II through the Golden Age of Hollywood, Taylor’s never say die spirit propelled him to stardom despite the naysayers who thought he was too “different”.  And yes, there’s a lot of confetti… Rip Rip Hooray! doc / kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ripriphooray/rip-rip-hooray Bow and Arrow Entertainment was founded in 2014 by Matthew Perniciaro and Michael Sherman to create a focus on artist driven narrative and documentary motion pictures.   http://bowandarrow.la/about/ HOT, NEW ITEMS! On this episode host Ashlee Eason @theeamateurexpert speaks with Christian Business Coach and Entrepreneur Marilyn Jones. We discussed her career path, her ideas of success and the tips & motivators she used along the way. Follow Marilyn @marilyn_battiel and @bfragranced and for more information check out https://linktr.ee/MarilynBattiel. Sooo many gems dropped this episode and she closed us out in a powerful prayer. Follow us on IG to catch the next show live: https://www.instagram.com/theeamateur... Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theeamateure... Guest Bio: Marilyn Jones a Chicago Native is the Founder and Owner of B Fragranced the online destination of beautifully crafted Fragrances & Colognes for both, modern women and men. Marilyn owns 100% of the company and proud to be WBE certified! Marilyn’s number eleven of twelve children born to a devoted Mother and Father. Unfortunately, her time with her Mother was cut short at the young age of five when Marilyn’s mom lost her battle to Breast Cancer. Marilyn’s older siblings would share loving memories of their mom, which at times left Marilyn feeling empty because she didn’t share those same memories. However, what Marilyn did have that never left her was her mother’s scent. This birthed a passion and a zeal to create Fragrances as unique as the individual who wears it! Marilyn grew up with a love for perfumes that grew stronger in later years. “Our New flagship fragrance Embellish doesn’t smell like my Mother once did, but the blueprint of the business certainly embodies her”. Marilyn realized the imminent need of consumers wanting to celebrate who they are and Identifying a Brand that enabled Self-Empowerment and Confidence was extremely important. With that said, [ME]™ became the new lifestyle! B Fragranced branded the creative process of making what "you" wear the pinnacle of a two-letter word characterized as ME. Empower who you are, Be Courageous, Be Beautiful more importantly B Fragranced. Leave your Memory Mark. Marilyn Jones is certainly leaving her Mark in the beauty industry as the trailblazing Queen of scents. As seen in Essence, Woe, Juicy, Sheen Magazine, Delux, CEOMOM. 23: What Academics Get Wrong about Professional Development

Have you ever done professional development? So often, it feels like academics get professional development wrong. Usually, it’s done with a one-off training, but the problem is that there’s no follow through or follow up. There’s no relationship with the leader or the participants.  I want to help transform professional development for academic women. I've been in academia since 1998, and in all those years, I don’t remember any content from one-off trainings. Instead, I remember the relationships I developed along the way.  In this episode I’m talking about good professional development and the benefits that come from combining training, coaching and community.  “The way you are going to change your professional life is through the development of relationships, not through training or teachings you receive.” Training One-off trainings sound appealing because we think that if we just know a certain skill, we’ll be able to change the way we integrate writing into our career. In my coaching programs, the content of the training portion is based on a few key takeaways from my past career trajectory:    You have to have clarity. You have to be clear on what you want to do so you can take action. Control and how to step in to power and direct your career. You also need to have clarity on your boundaries. Coaching Coaching is ultimately about relationships, and how it can influence and change your professional direction. You are in a relationship with your coach. Teaching and coaching are different; teaching involves passing info from one person to another.  The job of a coach is to ask the right questions that lead people to figure out what they need to do themselves. It is not about the coach and their experiences, but walking someone through a process of transformation. You want your coach to take your unique situation into account, and develop a plan of action for you.   Community Community is the secret sauce, but unfortunately there is a lack of community in academia. Once you have your tenure track job, it can be very difficult to create community. A community solves a few problems: The onus of implementing what you’ve learned is not solely on you. If you find implementation difficult, you can get feedback from your community. Brings together diverse groups of women who can support each other.  This includes diversity on every level such as diversity of institution and types of positions. Stops you from feeling isolated Provides you with source of information you wouldn't otherwise be able to tap into  Adds accountability from those who understand and support you “If you think back to your career to those pivotal moments, they will be moments in relationship with other people.” Coaching Programs There are several ways we can work together to achieve your goals:  Amplify: Faculty Writing Accelerator program is for pre tenure women on the tenure track. This year-long program offers training and support through coaching and community as you implement what you learn. Our NEW program has launched! Uplevel your post-tenure career with Elevate. This program is for post tenure women, and it is a 6 month coaching program that follows the training- coaching-community model.  Mark your calendars for May, because The Academic Women’s Writing Roadmap course is reopening! This 10-week program teaches you how to make time to write. Topics include writing systems, time management, project management, creating a pipeline for your writing, and creating short and long term plans.
