Paul McCartney got dragged for writing “silly love songs” and then turned the criticism into a No. 1 anthem. We start with that 1976 chart run, the irony baked into the lyrics, and the way one summertime hit can glue itself to your memory, right down to the bicentennial vibe and what was playing everywhere you went. From there we jump 50 years forward to McCartney closing out Saturday Night Live with Will Ferrell, and we get real about what it means to watch a living legend perform at 83. We talk vocals, stamina, song selection, and why it matters that Paul isn't trying to “fix” aging with tech. Then the night gets even better: the Chad Smith confusion joke, the classic Ferrell deadpan, and the surprise after-show energy where cowbell and Beatles staples (“Help” and “Drive My Car”) light up the room. We round things out with what we're listening to now and what still holds up, including our new “What's Mooving Me” pick from Drivin N Cryin, plus “Minute with Jimmy” on The Rolling Stones' “In the Stars.” That opens the door to Sticky Fingers at Muscle Shoals, the legacy issues around “Brown Sugar,” the story behind “Wild Horses,” and a quick run through Heart, Yoko Ono, Pet Shop Boys, and Depeche Mode's media critique in “New Dress.” If you like classic rock history, pop culture moments, and music talk that's equal parts funny and thoughtful, subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more listeners can find us. He went on to spend the next 25 years touring the global arena circuit production managing high-profile acts like The Pet Shop Boys, Rihanna and Queen w/ Adam Lambert before forming his own production company 1826 in 2014. Joe explains how he came to start 1826, it's ethos and where he sees the company going into the future as an elite entertainment agency and full-service concert touring production provider. 70 ans !

OBSCURE SOUNDS 2013 - EDITOR “Subway” provides a glimpse of '80s synth-pop nonchalance, like how The Pet Shop Boys did and continue to do. The vocal delivery is instantly hypnotic, a hushed spoken-word approach that resembles a slowed-down version of the verses within Pet Shop Boys' “Rent”. Underneath this exists tightly constructed warbles of synths; a popping synth plays hopscotch with a robotic kick drum, as a looser key-laden melody adds appreciated spontaneity. The lyrics love the use of non-sequitur, but they concoct a stoned serenity nonetheless: “I love Sex Pistols ‘cuz they're fun, I love to dance when I'm drunk.” The words tend to drift in and out like drunken ramblings. It's raining out, and you had a few too many. There won't be another train for an hour or two. Might as well take another from the flask. It's bleak and lonesome, but purely intoxicating regardless. Mark Moreno and Norwegian electronic group Flunk have made a great collaboration with “Subway”, a culmination of various electronic veterans who have been at it for decades.

Episode 200: Pet Shop Boys – Please (1986) (Featuring Andrew Dineley of "Art on Your Sleeve") – Part 1 and Colours of Ever announcement The 200th "regular" episode of Permanent Record Podcast is here! ("Regular" excludes special episodes and the PRP 007 Mini-Broadcasts, which don't follow the same numbering scheme.)   Brian and Sarah wanted to do something big and special for episode 200, so they chose to cover an album which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary: Please, the debut album from the Pet Shop Boys. And to make the episode even bigger and more special, they invited the charming and talented Andrew Dineley to join in on the conversation. Andrew, as you probably already know, is host of the excellent "Art on Your Sleeve" podcast, as well as proprietor of the fabulous Soft Octopus Design Studio and contributor to Classic Pop magazine. This first episode in the Please series sets the stage for what's to come. Brian and Sarah look back to the pre-Pet Shop Boys days of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe and recount the story Neil and Chris's first meeting. Our hosts then follow the journey of the Boys' musical collaboration, which takes us from Chelsea, to Camden Town, to New York City, and back to London, and introduces us to characters such as Ray Roberts, Bobby Orlando, Tom Watkins, and Stephen Hague.  Andrew Dineley joins the conversation to provide insight on the design aspects of Please such as the original album cover concept, the final cover design done by Mark Farrow, as well as a few of the single covers. He also shares stories about and from Pet Shop Boys' first manager, Tom Watkins, and Andrew recalls his first exposure to Pet Shop Boys music-- on a children's show with eerily-animated pound notes! And, we even get to hear about a chance encounter recently Andrew Dineley had with OMD's Andy McCluskey! As is usual with PRP album discussions, the release history, chart positions, and reviews of Please are covered in this episode, as well as Brian and Sarah's personal history with the album, which Brian feels slightly embarrassed to share.  And because it's the big 200th episode, several listeners sent in voicemails to mark the occasion, and our hosts happily share those messages as well.  Finally, as if that's not enough, Brian has exciting musical news of his own to share, about yet another synthpop duo. This duo, called Colours of Ever, consists of Brian and his longtime friend Jason, and they've released their first single on Bandcamp! Check them out at https://coloursofever.bandcamp.com/ . Episode 38 – Obscure: After the Event United by a shared love of one band, Graham and Chris close Season Six with their most personal episode yet - a sun‑drenched, queue‑length, bladder‑testing, heart‑thumping deep dive into Pet Shop Boys' Obscure concerts at Camden's Electric Ballroom. What begins as a simple “after the event” recap quickly becomes a full‑blown oral history of the week London turned into PSB City: 5am superfans, numbered wristbands, Chicken Shop suitcase storage, tactical toilet breaks, merch‑lounge carpets, and the strange, beautiful camaraderie of a crowd who'd waited forty years for a night like this. From there, the Pod Cast Boys relive the gigs in forensic, front‑row detail - the dry ice, the wallow‑heavy setlist, the thrill of seeing their heroes in person, and the emotional punch of hearing deep cuts in a tiny room with 1,500 ecstatic fans and their closest friends.  They celebrate new drummer Max Blunos' death metal roots, legacy guest stars Sylvia, Mark and Johnny F-ing Marr, Neil's lectern‑top lyric folder, and the five times an entire ballroom embraced the words: “Tonight - no hits!” Along the way they revisit their own “scientific” setlist predictions, the chaos of their travel logistics, decode “the vibe”, and share the joy of experiencing Pet Shop Boys with lifelong friends, new global acquaintances, and a surprising number of people wearing In Depth T‑shirts. Finally, they wrap the season with the inaugural In Depth Obscure Awards - honouring the strangest, boldest, most unexpected moments of the Obscure era - and reflect on why these shows felt like a celebration not just of PSB's deep cuts, but of their own teenage imperial phases too. A gig diary; a fan documentary; a tribute to the power of community - the perfect finale to a season that's traced four decades of Pet Shop Boys from Please to Volume to Obscure. With Volume - Pet Shop Boys' complete visual history - finally landing, Graham and Chris open the book and step straight into four decades of meticulously crafted pop iconography. Using the anniversary of Please as their start point, they trace how the duo's visual world was forged even before chart success. They begin with their earliest photo shoots: Eric Watson's ripped T‑shirts and tennis racquets; the Tottenham flat where friendships, romances and future lyrics intertwined; and the stark, stylish images that helped define the PSB aesthetic. From there they follow the thread through XL Design, ZTT's manifesto-driven maximalism, Factory's cool minimalism, and the arrival of Mark Farrow - the designer who would help turn Pet Shop Boys sleeves into modern art. Along the way they revisit the key visual turning points: the first Boy cap, the tartan‑trousered Brixton showcase, the “don't look triumphant” Top of the Pops performance, the industrial luxury of the West End Girls sleeve, and the early videos where Neil and Chris perfected the art of doing… practically nothing. But are they “art”, or just “dead arty”? By exploring the images, collaborators and ideas that shaped Pet Shop Boys' visual identity, Graham and Chris paint a podcast portrait that uncovers how PSB instinctively understood that pop should look as good as it sounds. When was the last time you were bored? Nadia, Jem and Keir wonder if ennui is a feeling that belongs in the past – and what a boredom-free life might be missing. Is compulsive scrolling a modern symptom of boredom? Why are spiritual practices often based around tedious repetition? Do bored workers make better organisers? What about the “stuckness” experienced by migrants, or the drudgery of housework? The gang offer their theories of Boredism (and Post-Boredism) in a perfectly mind-numbing Trip, with ideas from Lukács, Gramsci, the Pet Shop Boys and loads of 1970s punk. With Pet Shop Boys preparing to dive deep into their catalogue for five intimate Obscure shows at Camden's Electric Ballroom, Graham and Chris roll up their sleeves for their most forensic fan investigation yet: can two amateurs really predict the ultimate non‑singles setlist? First they uncover the historical clues - the 40th anniversary of Please and a rediscovered 1986 photoshoot - before following the evidence to the duo's early‑80s Camden stomping ground and a 1984 Pits and Perverts benefit, the Barfly's legendary 200‑capacity War Child fundraiser, and the Electric Ballroom's own independent wrestling pedigree. From there, they plunge into the outer edges of the Tennant/Lowe universe: Further Listening deep cuts, lost intros, 28‑minute Bobby O experiments, Japanese / Czech collaborations, and the question of which Pet Shop Boys track is the most obscure ever. Along the way they weigh up fan favourites, Radio 2 poll results, Chris Lowe's own 2008 fantasy setlist, dream merch ideas, and the songs their own In Depth listeners most want to hear. What emerges is a gloriously over‑engineered, spreadsheet‑driven, “scientific” prediction of the Obscure setlist - complete with debates about staging, guests, new arrangements, and whether or not the shows will see them strip back to just two men and a very dependable laptop. Part history lesson, part detective story, part love letter to Pet Shop Boys' deepest cuts - this is the perfect warm‑up for the most anticipated Pet Shop Boys concerts in decades. Neil Tennant co-wrote a musical at Primary School and soon decided that “learning other people's songs was hard work compared with making up your own”. He's chosen some from the Pet Shop Boys' 40-year catalogue, hits and obscurities, in ‘One Hundred Lyrics and a Poem', just out in paperback, and added fascinating notes about their context and composition. This very funny and revealing conversation lands on the following … ... the first song he ever wrote … auditioning for Rocket Records in 1975 … does songwriting have rules? … how Chris Lowe tamed his inner “musical snob” … rap, Brecht-Weill, Betjeman, Noel Coward, My Fair Lady and the art of “speak-singing” … the decades of lyrics stored in our brains … the Songwriting Bootcamp that produced What Have I Done To Deserve This? … the essence of melancholy (and the chord that expresses it) … “the sound of words is often more important than the sense” … whether Dylan deserved the Nobel Prize for Literature … West End Girls and whether to rap in English or American … the writing of King's Cross, Cricket Wife, Odd Man Out and I Made My Excuses And Left … “Robert Maxwell stole my pension!” … and the “geology of my life” in diaries that one day might make a memoir. Graham and Chris return to 1986 for the second half of their 40th-anniversary Please deep dive, placing Pet Shop Boys' debut into the wider world it landed in - Cold War tension, Chernobyl panic, post-Live Aid earnestness, brick-sized mobile phones and a pop landscape buzzing with the likes of A‑ha, Five Star and Madonna. From there they go track‑by‑track, and enter Advision's world of talking calculators, existential mathematics, singing lessons, sax solos, misfiring sequencers, kebab-house retsina, studio parties, drunken TV appearances, tubular bells and truculent trombonists. Along the way they unearth lost demos, unlikely influences, rare remixes, and some of Neil's first and finest lyrical blueprints.  What emerges is a love letter to London, to escape, to youth and to hedonism. Forty years on, and Please still sounds like the beginning of something. Unboxing the opening chapter of their 40th-anniversary super deluxe celebration of Please, Graham and Chris rewind to PSB Year Zero - the moment an “ex-Smash Hits journalist” met a “weird architect” and began politely reshaping pop. They trace the stories of five pivotal Please people who helped turn Neil and Chris into Pet Shop Boys: eight-track mentor Ray Roberts; Hi-NRG maverick Bobby O, maximalist manager Tom Watkins; rock-steady producer Stephen Hague; and legendary vocalist and Dylan collaborator Helena Springs.  Along they way, they tell the full, cinematic origin stories of West End Girls and Opportunities - from knee-slapping demos and New York studio bills to T.S. Eliot, sealed trains and chart-dodging false starts - and share their own first steps into PSB fandom. It's the beginning of a two-part deep dive into the album that started everything.  Plus: stay tuned right to the end of the credits for news of the first ever In Depth podcast competition! Welcome back to 1987!The decade of decadence, extravagance, elegance and other words that end in -nce was powering its way towards the later end of its cultural tenure. And whilst there is no doubt that perceived wisdom (or, the internet as we now call it) would tell us that 1987 was the year of big hair, big shoulder pads, and big mobile phones, those of that were there can tell a different story too. The year of POP aspiration was also one of smoke and mirrors. The big suits and big statements across our TV and radio were often wonderfully deceptive. Whilst the music industry had loadsamoney to spend, those acts climbing the charts and filling the pages of Smash Hits were doing so often in the most homemade and, frankly subversive way possible. And in doing so, the genres were flowing, the hits were coming and our pop landscape was as colourful and diversive as we could possibly have wished for.Step forward then the leading compilation series (other slightly inferior ones were OBVIOUSLY available) to deliver its tenth volume. I know, double figures!!Now, That's What I Call Music 10 shines brightly with its neon signage casting a glittering pop beacon over the wasteland of…..(enough with the imagery, get to the songs, Ed!)Step forward the utterly imperial Pet Shop Boys, the incredibly sophisti-poptastic Curiosity Killed The Cat, the completely covered in plaster-of-Paris Hue and Cry and many other to lead the hits-filled charge into Autumn ‘87. And joining me to provide her very own unique view of this pop snapshot is TV and radio presenter Sue Charles.Join us as we find out about Sue's journey across Radio1 AND 2, from 'Newsbeat' and 'Steve Wright in the Afternoon' to reporting behind the scenes at TOTP and to becoming one of the most familiar voices and faces across BBC Wales. And of course, dive deep back into the pop culture of 1987 that includes the The Style Council, Casey Kasem, Andy Warhol, Shrewsbury(!), Sir William of Idol, Cliff, claymation Jazz, the glorious return of Squeeze and some genuine love for one of Wales' musical legends Mike Peters. All of this plus some amazing missing in action ‘87 stars and not a single mention of Michael Fish! Emerging from the rave, breakbeat, hardcore, and jungle scenes of the '90s UK, Shadow Child first came to prominence as Dave Spoon with global residencies and hit remixes for artists like Pet Shop Boys and Dizzee Rascal. As Shadow Child, he's carved a niche in deep house and bass-driven dance music, blending euphoric vocals with rave-inspired beats. A Break In The Clouds celebrates Simon's full musical spectrum – from shuddering breakbeats and UK garage grooves to introspective, emotive moments – showcasing the confidence and freedom of an artist at the peak of his craft. For the Season 11 finale, we present part two of our series on the ‘80s. We continue in the alt-rock/indie/new wave vein from our last episode – where we featured the likes of U2, The Cult, Bryan Ferry, Fine Young Cannibals and more. This week, we continue with: Robert Smith of The Cure in conversation with Christopher. Robert is painfully shy and yet quite revealing and is, in Tom’s words, “downright lovable”. The B-52s, who remember their early days and the struggle to continue after the death of guitarist Ricky Wilson. Dave Gahan and Martin Gore from Depeche Mode in a short chat with Christopher. Peter Garrett and the late Rob Hirst of Midnight Oil talking about being famous in Australia and trying to win over audiences in the Canada and the U.S. Toronto’s Jane Siberry, who was recently inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, talks about her unique vision for her music – and why she carries around a “very soft bat” to ward off her fans. Christopher’s interview with Annie Lennox of Eurythmics as she talks about fashion and anti fashion. Producers note: The promised interviews with Pet Shop Boys, The Fixx and Thompson Twins will air in Season 12. We promise.

Bowie's early years have been scrutinised repeatedly but people tend to speed through the last act, from the early ‘90s to his death in 2016. Alexander Larman's ‘Lazarus: The Second Coming Of David Bowie' looks at his resurrection and the mystery of his final days in Manhattan in attractively honest detail, a book that's as fondly critical of his artistic decisions as it's celebratory. Under discussion here … … ‘David Bowie was a fictional invention and much of his life an act' … how wrong so many album reviews turned out to be … “he liked to be liked and he put a lot of effort into being liked” … Eno, Tony Visconti, Nile Rodgers, Pet Shop Boys and his endless search for collaborators … the Lucian Freud incident at the Dorchester … Scott Walker's taped message: “I see God in the window” ... “he trusted in the idea he was a genius” … the sharp contrast been his public image and private life … how his Lord's Prayer at the Freddie Mercury tribute was a deliberate attempt to steal the show … the piercing question Tin Machine were asked on ‘Wogan' … and the struggle to find anything sincere in his interviews. The phrase "go west!" was not coined by the Village People or the Pet Shop Boys, but by Horace Greeley, a famous newspaper editor a long time ago. And seen from Europe, all of the United States is West. So that's what Luca Puster tells his young European clients who just finish High School and are considering college: Go west young man, and grow up playing football. Or soccer. How do they find American colleges? What makes them come here, what is attractive about this step in their football and study careers? How do they find the game here, the current crisis around immigration and politics, what do they take back? Luca is the co-founder of Students Go West, an agency that helps bring European footballers into American collegiate soccer programs. He also played for the GAK in Graz, Austria, and for Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE: Students Go West, websitePercentages of international players in the top NCAA teams, 2023NEW: send me a text message!
