We're beginning to see businesses return to normality – but it appears part of getting back to normal is ramping up the volume of irritating customer communications advises Andrew Stevens, Principal, Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance, Quadient. "The number of complaints accelerated towards the end of 2020, but now we're in a worse position than before the pandemic. The sheer volume of spam calls and texts will take a toll on worried customers, who are already grappling with the energy crisis and soaring costs of living. So businesses need to pull the handbrake on annoying customer calls and texts, or they could hit record levels of complaints this year, which would hit revenues when customers decide to leave." With the cost-of-living crisis at the top of everyone's minds, consumers are more worried than ever about their finances. Banks must provide helpful and personalized communication to demonstrate they are on the customers' side. By bombarding customers with irrelevant content, banks are only exacerbating what is already a stressful time. Instead, they don't need to be sent innumerable offers or reminders, instead functions like spending tracking tools and searchable statements. Communications that highlight these valuable functions and how to use them, or give other ways to reduce costs, will be much more welcome. These are just a few topics we explore in today's episode of Tech Talks Daily.

Quadient is the driving force behind meaningful customer experiences. By focusing on four key solution areas: Customer Experience Management, Business Process Automation, Mail-Related Solutions, and Parcel Locker Solutions, Quadient is on a mission to simplify the connection between people, and what matters. The company claims that businesses face a customer exodus if they don't shift to CaaS (Communications as a Service). This comes as IDC predicts that a quarter of all connectivity budgets will run through CaaS within two years. Scott Draeger from Quadient discusses the immense pressures businesses currently face, with customers demanding an almost instant reply across an increasingly expanding range of channels. In contrast, different business departments struggle to keep pace as interaction with customers is slowed by constantly needing to call on the assistance of their IT team. We also talk about how these problems risk damaging customer experience, leaving people to conclude that the business is too slow to respond/makes them repeat themselves. Gartner reports that more than four-fifths of companies compete based on customer experience poses a real risk of leaving for a competitor.

Since Mary Beth became CEO of Athleta, Athleta has become a billion-dollar brand, rolled out inclusive sizing chain-wide, and made several pivots to provide a full omnichannel experience for their customers as they worked and worked out from home during the pandemic. Mary Beth’s career in retail started early on at the Tasty Freeze in Chicago, where she went above and beyond at an early age, asking to re-configure menu boards and craft an even more perfect cone. Her ambition and success continued through her professional career, which saw her hold positions at McKinsey, launch the DTC side of Nike’s business, run e-commerce for Sephora, and finally in her current role leading the team at Athleta. Through it all, Mary Beth says her key to success is being proactive in her career, and she shares some tips on how to do that along with advice on making personal and professional career decisions, creating best in class omnichannel retail experiences, and how to prepare yourself and your teams for the next generation of retail. In this episode of the TA Leaders podcast, we sat down with Shelia Gray. Shelia is a long-time HR veteran who currently serves as the vice president of talent acquisition at Quadient, an IT and services business based out of Bagneux, France. Previously, she's been a global TA leader at GE Appliances, Citrix, and AMD. Shelia talks about her journey in the human resources field, the things she loves about talent acquisition — both the fun and the challenging — and how she rose up through the ranks from HR generalist. She describes the point in her career when she knew she wanted to focus on the operations and technology behind recruiting. This was when she was working at a place called AlliedSignal (later acquired by Honeywell) as they went through their digital transformation. Fresh off her 2021 team goal-setting, Shelia shares what she'll be most focused on this year, and some of the types of tools she'll be investing in, which provides valuable insight into where she sees TA going in the foreseeable future. She also talks candidly about the changes Covid-19 brought around that will likely stick, and mentions that remote work — or at least a more rapid march toward it — is one of them. Jay Singer started his career at the ripe young age of 16 years old, selling hot dogs, peanuts, and beer at Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Garden and Shea Stadium, eventually working his way through City College of New York. He took a pay cut from selling in the Stadiums to get a “real job” at Dun & Bradstreet as a commercial collector. That was okay until I went in the field to do a collection and someone pointed a gun at him from the window of their Town House in Manhattan, and that was the end of that job.  Jay went on to sell copiers for Saxon. Then moved on to become a Regional Manager for Savin copiers. Continuing to move up in his career, Jay became a VP/GM for ACOPY, who was the largest independent distributor for Canon copiers in the US. ACOPY was acquired by Alco Standard (IKON) where Jay headed up sales for the Northeast District, then became VP of Sales for over 4,000 sales reps/managers at IKON; responsible for $4 billion in revenues. He was at IKON 18 years “herding cats” assimilating their acquired independent dealers into their direct sales channel. Not liking the direction IKON was taking, he left IKON to open up a consulting company for small businesses who did not know how to build a B2B sales organization and gain “access” to senior executives in enterprise accounts. He was then recruited by a senior executive who he worked with at Savin, ACOPY, and IKON and joined Quadient, where he's been for the last 11+ years in a senior sales operations role. A new and special podcast series where leaders and talent professionals share their own experiences with varying aspects of discrimination and inequality. Here we’re dedicated to creating dedicated conversations around those specific moments – the moments that matter. Shelia Gray, Quadient 0:21I did two virtual conferences this week the one that I spoke at was okay, because because they did an avatar and you actually went into a room, you got to choose your spot and stand where you wanted to look at the screen or going third. That was an interesting conference, Chris Hoyt 0:42But I want to talk about the logistics that I would pick the avatar with … Shelia Gray, Quadient 0:44Oh my gosh, it was so cool Chris Hoyt 0:46With the biggest giant head. And then if I got to pick where I could stand, I was standing the very front. Shelia Gray, Quadient 0:52Mine, you couldn’t be a person of color. So when I would choose my avatar, the hairstyles With a ponytail a high ponytail, and then when you chose the skin tell it color it only did your face not your neck or your hands. It was weird thing on there. And then your clothes. I gotta wear some tight jeans and some sneakers. So I was like, Oh yeah, okay, we’ll call it Chris Hoyt 1:16I haven’t worn pants and months. Shelia Gray, Quadient 1:19Not long pants. Chris Hoyt 1:22Alright, so look, I have with me, Shelia Gray. Shelia, you have been a force, you’re one of my favorite people in our industry space. I have known you I always try to figure this out. Because, you know, I think we take for granted the time that we spent in the space at the time that we travel, you know, for those of us who were power travelers for so long and who just you know, bumped into each other in Ireland or Amsterdam or where all the other places we might have been? I want to say it’s probably been seven years, eight years that we’ve known each other. Shelia Gray, Quadient 1:55Oh gosh. Um, I think I met you I may have met you before, but I met you at a CareerXroads meeting in New Jersey. I think it was BASF Chris Hoyt 2:08Operations. Shelia Gray, Quadient 2:10It was the first operations meetings when I met you. I was with Mark and Jerry a lot longer than that. But I think that’s the first time I met you. Chris Hoyt 2:19Yeah, maybe so yeah, in fact. I don’t I think that was summer. It would have been roughly Shelia Gray, Quadient 2:26Summer or spring. Chris Hoyt 2:27Yeah, yeah, I remember that. Absolutely. Remember that. In fact, that was one of the meetings where I was sitting, I was sort of more of an observer than I was a participant that day. Shelia Gray, Quadient 2:37Yes. Chris Hoyt 2:38Was one of the final meetings before I was making the final decision if I wanted to buy half. Shelia Gray, Quadient 2:42Oh, it was okay. Yes, that was the first that was a really good meeting. That was my that was the first operations meeting. And so I don’t want to say we went off on tangents, but we covered a lot of stuff in that meeting. We did everything from recruiter performance to technology, and we covered the gamut and called it operations. It may have been one of those meetings where as a result, we did an we’ve now started doing subsets of that meeting, because I don’t remember us doing a technology meeting before. Chris Hoyt 3:13Right? That’s what we did Shelia Gray, Quadient 3:14Subsets. Yeah. Chris Hoyt 3:15Yeah, it’s fine because we carry the operations piece. And sometimes I think it acts as a catch all. Shelia Gray, Quadient 3:21Yes, Chris Hoyt 3:22But we’ve pulled other pieces out full blown meetings and disciplines and now we do technology showcases that came out of that. Yeah, that was pivotal. Shelia Gray, Quadient 3:29You know, it’s funny, because as a result of that meeting, I really saw like, when organizations asked me what’s the bare What are those job families with those jobs, you got to have in TA I used to say, you know,
