Medieval Recipes & Eating Right in Renaissance. Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro - expensive weight loss drugs that are all the rage now. Okay, let's get something straight away. In centuries past, diet didn't mean weight loss. In fact, it wasn't until the 18th century that researchers, and later society, began to see fat and obesity as health and, unfortunately, a social issue. Going back to history, what did people eat to stay healthy? That continues to be an important question today. In fact, it consumes many health-conscious people. But it also pertains to weight loss drugs, because experts warn that it's not enough to take Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro. You also have to eat right to stay healthy! So, during the Renaissance, the answer to the above question depended on the type of body you were born with, your constitution. So, are you sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric or melancholic? These psychological terms dictated what best fit your physiology. Dr. Ken Albala, my guest for this episode, is the author of Eating Right in the Renaissance. He is a professor of history at the University of the Pacific, and has written and edited more than 25 books about food and nutrition history, including Cooking in Europe, 1250 to 1650. Obviously, eating right not only helps you lose weight, but, more importantly, it helps you stay healthy and fight the onslaught and progression of many diseases. En este capítulo, Paula Iglesias entrevista a José Féliz Mozo sobre un caso clínico de una mujer de de 78 años con una clínica que cursa con alteraciones visuales, perceptivas, visoespaciales y práxicas, correspondientes a una variante denominada Atrofia Cortical Posterior, con la que en ocasiones puede cursar la Enfermedad de Alzheimer y otras enfermedades neurodegenerativas. No dia 13 de junho o Parlamento de Israel encerrou o mandato de Benjamin Netanyahu. Ele esteve 12 anos como primeiro-ministro, nos quais se aproximou de líderes populistas e conservadores, como Donald Trump. Sob seu comando, houve um aumento de ofensivas contra o estado Palestino e a quebra de acordos de paz. Apesar de ser o político israelense mais dominante de sua geração, o ex-primeiro-ministro, de 71 anos, fracassou na formação de um governo após as eleições em 23 de março, a quarta em dois anos. O novo governo israelense, liderado por Naftali Bennett, inclui legisladores de esquerda, de centro e árabes, que ele agrupou com o líder de oposição Yair Lapid. Bennett, de 49 anos, um judeu ortodoxo, será o premiê por dois anos antes de Lapid, um ex-apresentador de televisão, assumir o cargo. Com poucas perspectivas de progresso em relação à resolução do longo conflito com Israel, muitos palestinos provavelmente continuam impassíveis com a mudança de governo, dizendo que Bennett irá provavelmente seguir a mesma agenda de Netanyahu. There are no currently approved disease modifying drugs for Alzheimer's disease, but in a couple months that may change.   In July of 2021, the FDA will consider approval of a human monoclonal antibody called Aducanumab for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.  If approved, it will not only make this drug the defacto standard of care for Alzheimer's disease, but will create a monumental shift in the usage of other currently limited diagnostic tests, including Amyloid PET scans and other biomarkers. In dieser Folge präsentieren wir Ihnen eine Literaturlesung, die in München in der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften am 16.1.2020 stattfand. Im Rahmen einer Konferenz zu Juden und Muslimen in Deutschland sollten der israelisch-österreichische Schriftsteller Doron Rabinovici aus Wien sowie sein deutsch-iranischer Kollege SAID aus München aus ihren Werken lesen. Leider musste Rabinovici aus gesundheitlichen Gründen absagen. Sein Werk wurde aber von Prof. Michael Brenner vorgestellt. Moderiert wurde die Lesung von Olga Mannheimer. Nach der Lesung der beiden Kurzgeschichten kam es zu einem spannenden Austausch darüber, inwiefern Literatur zur Annäherung verschiedener Religionen und Kulturen beitragen kann. Die Konferenz wurde von der Abteilung für Jüdische Geschichte und Kultur an der LMU zusammen mit dem Leo Baeck Institut, der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften sowie dem Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung der TU Berlin organisiert. Finanziell unterstützt wurde diese von der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung für Wissenschaftsförderung. Abstract: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) tau pathology originates in the brainstem and subsequently spreads to the entorhinal cortex, hippocampus and finally to temporal, parietal and prefrontal association cortices in a relatively stereotyped progression. Current evidence attributes this orderly progression to trans-neuronal spread of misfolded tau protein along the projection pathways of affected neurons. The aggregation of tau is being increasingly recognized as a trustworthy biomarker preceding the appearance of Alzheimer's disease (AD) symptoms. One major goals of disease modifying therapies has been to stop or slow down the tau aggregation process. In order to evaluate drug efficacy, it would be desirable to have an accurate model predictive of a patient's future tau burden, against which the tau measurements from drug-receiving cohorts could be compared. Here we report the development of such a model, evaluated in a cohort of 88 subjects clinically diagnosed as Mild Cognitively Impaired (MCI = 60) or Alzheimer's disease (AD = 28) and tracked over a period of 18 months. Our approach combined data-driven and model-based methodologies, with the goal of predicting changes in tau within suitably specified target regions. We show that traditional statistical methods, allied to a network diffusion model for tau propagation in the brain, provide a remarkable prediction of the magnitude of incremental tau deposited in particular cortical areas of the brain over this period (MCI: R2 = 0.65+-0.16; AD: R2 = 0.71+-0.11) from baseline data. Our work has the potential to greatly strengthen the repertoire of analysis tools used in AD clinical trials, opening the door to future interventional trials with far fewer sample sizes than currently required.
