On today's episode of Impact Theory, Tom Bilyeu sits down with Joe Lonsdale—the prolific tech founder and investor known for co-founding Palantir and for building solutions at the intersection of technology and national defense. As concerns mount about America's readiness in the face of a rising China, Joe shares firsthand insights from decades at the forefront of defense innovation, higher education reform, and the struggle to revive meritocracy in our institutions. You'll hear how Joe went from a “naive pro-China camp” to sounding the alarm about CCP crackdowns, corporate espionage, and why our bloated, slow-moving government and defense sectors are failing to keep pace with adversaries abroad. From empowering the next generation of courageous leaders to building autonomous ships and anti-drone tech, Joe reveals what it will take for the U.S. to reclaim its competitive edge. In this episode we discuss the difference between culture and Islam. Too often the media, or our fellow Muslims or non-Muslims will mix up culture and Islam. Islam is a way of life. A way of life perfected by Allah SWT and brought to us through a mercy to mankind and the most perfect of creation, Muhammad SAW. Cultures, especially Arab cultures may be built on precedents of Islam, but no country runs on strictly Islamic law. Its often confused that what people "think" or what a "country" does can be associated with Islam, but that is not the case and we speak of that here. We address peoples cultural bias, prejudice, and racism as it pertains to the topic among other things. We also bring in personal experiences to show more perspective of the situation and the gravity it holds when calling something Islam, when it is not. FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA! Then, we move into our regular program: this time, Digital Dish host Jeanne Cuff is speaking to Radhika Krishnan, Chief Product Officer, Hitachi Vantara. But Radhika also makes time to discuss the importance of getting more girls and women into STEM fields and to share advice for those considering a career in tech. After all, diversity is critical to countering bias. Radhika reminds us: without diverse leaders, developers and stakeholders, AI can and will only ever have one perspective. Listen in to find out what you should be doing to pre-empt or counter bias in your organizations' artificial intelligence programs – and to create a positive (rather than dystopian) outlook for the future of AI.

We examine the forces and individuals that have shaped food culture, investigate how our tastes change with age, and ponder how taste is evaluated by arbiters like the Michelin guide and food media. Chef Val Cantu of Californios, the only two-Michelin-star Mexican restaurant in the world, addresses racist stereotypes around Mexican food. We speak with author Mayukh Sen about his recent book, Taste Makers, which tells the stories of seven immigrant women who have influenced American cuisine. A brief look at the history of the Michelin guide reveals the organization's involvement in French colonialism, and accusations of cultural bias in the star selection process. Plus, we learn how our physical senses of taste and smell change over time.Further Reading:If you are interested in dining at Californios, you can make reservations here. Today's episode is giving you an actual example of how social determinants of health can impact someone's care. For me, we have to have a more broad conversation about care. It's not solely on race. If we could focus more on how similar we are despite our experiences and differences. Yes, health disparities exist. Yes, minority populations are usually impacted by these structural issues. However, WE have all struggled with access to care. WE come from different backgrounds and have had poor experiences in getting to appointments. WE have all struggled with watching loved ones get sick because they can't afford their medications. The question is how do WE work TOGETHER to help each other MORE? What assumptions do you think are made when it comes to culture, nationality or ethnicity? What can people and companies stop or start doing to help everyone feel included in the workplace? We invited Tereza De Bardi and Alexis Jenkins to get a European as well as an American opinion on this! About the speakers: Tereza De Bardi Tereza is by profession a Director at Deloitte Czech Republic focused on transformations in Finance and Business Services, and co-founded the D&I Shapers, a platform which brings together organizations across Czech market to move the D&I to the next level. Her life is a diversity story itself, spending more than half of her childhood abroad in Bangladesh and Egypt, working for and with multiple international businesses both as employee or as advisor, being a woman in Consulting (still a male dominated business) and finally marrying a "foreigner", all these provide her with a precious observation field for cultural biases topic. Alexis Jenkins Alexis is the Founder of ANJ Consultancy a DEI firm that helps build inclusive and anti-racist workplaces and the Head of People & Culture at Dame Products. By implementing storytelling, data, and analyzing a company's needs, she is able to use her professional and personal experience to build standards and policies for companies who are truly ready to begin the work. Alexis believes that leaving any facet of yourself at the door is a thing of the past, especially when the door is in your home. Alexis resides outside of New York City with her husband and two year old son. Some insights from the speakers: We need diversity at all levels in companies Everyone is responsible for making a change in their surroundings Become an accomplice to marginalized groups One downside of the D&I efforts can be ‘tokenization' Language was the biggest barrier for D&I work at Deloitte Czech Republic Have regional and even local strategy for implementing D&I - no one-size-fits all approach from the HQ
Cultural Bias, language is a way to relay concepts to one another. However,, those communications rely on deeply embedded ideas and understandings that are often uncritical and poorly revised or declared in our efforts to convey to others and to ourselves. A constant vigilance of critical awareness and comparative reason must be applied to our study of documents originating from other cultures and languages to seek underlying meaning for our insights.

In North America - the United States in particular - males are regularly circumcised at birth. Over the years, various arguments have been made leading up to a shift in the American Academy of Pediatrics suggesting that the benefits of male infant circumcision outweigh the risks. In this episode - the first of two - I had the chance to talk to Brian Earp, an outspoken critic of the arguments often made in favour of non-therapeutic male infant circumcision. He approaches this topic with logic and science and we start today by looking at these arguments regarding benefits versus risks and how this relates to a child's right to bodily autonomy. I know this is a topic that can be hard for some people, but it's an important one that we need to discuss. It is important for healthcare providers to understand the issues of gaps in healthcare caused by cultural biases, and to understand the practices contributed to the care and to know what can be done to curve bias, especially in labor and delivery. Dr. Alissa Erogbogbo, Medical Director of Operations at OB Hospitality Group, addresses the cultural bias in labor and delivery.
Your accent is the way you sound when you speak and in reality everybody has an accent – in somebody else’s opinion. Most accents have some kind of stereotype attached to them. While European and American accents are found to be sophisticated and elegant, other non-white accents such as African, Caribbean, Asian, or Latino accents maybe perceived to be crude and lower class because those minority groups are treated lower in society and their accents are associated with something undesirable.Although people poke fun at British or American accents, but it’s never with the intention of making it sound unrefined, as it is with other accents. The thing about mocking accents is that we often dismiss how hurtful they can be under the pretence of “it was a joke” or “all in good fun.” But for people who have relations to accent issues, it can be hurtful and impact their confidence as there still exists in our society subtle discrimination against them to indicate they are different. On this episode, we discuss whether having a Non-Amercian or Non-European accent has an impact on your confidence or ability to progress economically and take up more senior leadership roles in society. We are joined by Rennae, JJ, and Kene as they share their personal experiences on how their accents have been perceived and why this shouldn’t be a barrier to achieving your goals and speaking up when any form of social injustice or discrimination is directed towards you or any of your loved ones.

It's scary to be a white person sharing thoughts on race. I can't seem to get out of it today though because I am currently a white person with a lot of thoughts about race and a podcast.I ask what's up with the term 'People of Color'? Is it appropriate/politically correct?I was raised in a small city with a huge majority of white people making up the demographics of the population. I thought I was colorblind and we were all the same. Turns out, it's a lot more complicated than that.Lots of awkward stories about me fumbling around trying not to look racist.1 of a 2 part series.

Sharply different reactions to the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial reveal the racial divide that persists in America. The author of a book about race and cultural bias, Allen Lewis (James Madison University), looks at race in light of the Obama presidency and the George Zimmerman and Michael Dunn court cases. Also: The Geography of Slavery website catalogues more than 4,000 advertisements offering rewards for runaway slaves (including one written by Thomas Jefferson) placed in newspapers in the later part of the 18th century. Tom Costa (University of Virginia’s College at Wise) says these advertisements humanize the stories of the runaway men and women and will also be used in the classroom to teach American history. And: Bridgett Robertson (Virginia State University) says three-fourths of all African-Americans use Twitter and are using it to discuss political and social issues of importance to the black community. Later in the show: Civil rights activist Bob Moses famously helped organize a voter registration drive in Mississippi that changed the political landscape for the black community. He also believed that something else was necessary for full citizenship in society: math literacy. Oliver Hill (Virginia State University) agrees that learning algebra is a civil right. Also featured: John Nunnery (Old Dominion University) has caught the attention of the White House with his classroom collaboration model that gets children excited about math. And: Rose Asera tells the remarkable story of how Uri Treisman transformed Berkeley’s math program. Plus: Sometimes all it takes to grab kids’ attention is one really good teacher. Dan Meyer uses video to make math problems real.
