Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. One of the most in demand blues / rock guitarists in the world is a mysterious character who goes by the name of G.E. Smith. Millions of TV viewers know his face-and the shock of unruly blond ponytail that was always falling across it-from his tenure stint of fronting the Saturday Night Live Band. Smith was hired to play lead guitar for Hall and Oates, he stayed for six years (1979-1985) constantly touring and recording with them, racking up hit after hit. Smith toured for almost four years with the legendary Bob Dylan. Smith was also honored to be the musical director for special events such as the 1988 Emmy Awards, the 1993 Rhythm and Blues Foundation Awards and the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden. The latter event was another of those “fantasy situations” that G.E. keeps getting involved in. “The rehearsals for that Dylan concert you wouldn't believe. I was rehearsing with George Harrison in the morning, Eric Clapton in the afternoon, and Lou Reed at night. One afternoon, rehearsing the finale, I had Harrison, Tom Petty, Clapton, Neil Young, Dylan and Roger McGuinn all lined up. GE also joined Roger Waters 2010 WALL LIVE toured the world three times and toured with him for seven years. In 2015, GE returned to SNL where he received an EMMY award as bandleader, for the 40th SNL anniversary special. In 2015, GE and wife, Taylor Barton, started an exciting project called PORTRAITS, which hosts a rotating roster of acclaimed musicians and artists from all realms for a deeper look at what drives them creatively. Tom 'Bones" Malone might be the most accomplished and interesting musician in all of entertainment. For the purposes of this show, Tom was the arranger and key member of the CBS orchestra for the entire run of The Late Show with David Letterman. For many, that would be considered legendary. But for Tom, its literally one of many accomplishments on a long list. A maestro in both theory and practice, Tom has arranged 3,000 pieces of music, many of which were done on the fly. He is currently recording a Big Band record in his house, where he plays all the instruments, and produces all the tracks. Talk about a one man band. He was on the original Saturday Night Live Band where he met Paul Shaffer for the first time, worked on 'The Blues Brothers,' and even helped Paul get the original gig on Late Night. Tom and Mike talk about all these things and more. Eddie Vedder? Yup. The Foo Fighters and Taylor Hawkins? You Betcha. Warren Zevon? Yes, and it's beautiful. This is an episode of The Letterman Podcast that should not be missed. I know, I know. We say that every time. But this one, by gum, this one is legendary, just like Tom. One last thing: There is a moment Tom talked about where he got a joke on the show-unintentionally. This moment is indeed immortalized as a clip on the internet, and we put it up in 'The Letterman Podcast Facebook Group' which we invite you to join and come take a look at it. Hilarious. As always, The Letterman Podcast is brought to you in part by Rupert Jee's Hello Deli, your source for Late Show with David Letterman merchandise, as well as sandwich's that will knock your socks off. Go to hello-deli.com for the details. Finally, we cannot wait for a time that we do not have to ask folks to Like, Share, Subscribe, and leave a positive comment for the show. However, that time is not here yet. So please do all of the above. As always, a kitty gets a pet in that sweet spot right between her eyes every time someone does one of those above mentioned actions. A really nice pet, where she can't help but close her eyes real slow in appreciation. Please don't deprive that kitty her pets. #thanksdave #davidletterman #latenight #lateshow #lateshowwithdavidletterman #Thelateshow #thelettermanpodcast #trombone #thebluesbrothers #snl #musician #letterman #thecbsorchestra #paulshaffer #comedy

For over a decade Jared Scharff was the lead guitarist for the Saturday Night Live Band, as he still was when we did this interview during the freewheeling, pre-pandemic Before Times. He has since left the show and relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a songwriter, a session musician, and a solo artist, releasing music under the name Pearl Lion. The move seems to have paid off: on his own and as part of the production team Queen Sixties, Scharff has been a part of four albums that debuted at Number 1 in the past two years, by a diverse range of artists from Da Baby to Machine Gun Kelly.   Jared joined Anthony to discuss Radiohead's iconic 1997 masterpiece Ok Computer. An album of this depth, magnitude, and detail required adequate and appropriate fortification, so Anthony chose two huge names in California Zinfandel, to reflect the album's moody grace and dead-serious themes:  a 2018 Ridge East Bench Zin and a 2015 Ravenswood Big River Zin. Two expressions of the same varietal were chosen to mirror both the album's ethereal, angelic harmonies and its gloomy, deep, and dour dissection of contemporary consumer culture.   Guest: Jared Scharff Album: Radiohead, Ok Computer Wine: Ridge, East Bench Zin 2018 and Ravenswood, Big River Zin, 2015

Millions of TV viewers know his face-and the shock of unruly blond ponytail that was always falling across it-from his tenure stint of fronting the Saturday Night Live Band. For G.E. (George Edward) Smith, a soulful guitarist, composer, singer, and bandleader, it all began in rural Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, where he was just about born with a guitar in his hand. “I started playing around the age of four, and started getting good at seven,” he says. “Eventually, the girlfriend of one of my Uncles bought me a Martin, a real good guitar, in 1959. Then when folk the music scene came around and Bob Dylan was first performing, I got really into that.” By chance he was attending a taping of the television show ‘Hootenanny’ in Princeton, New Jersey, and saw the legendary Odetta and Josh White perform, further inciting his musicality. On his 11th birthday, G.E.’s mother bought him his first electric guitar, a Fender Telecaster, a model that dated his birth year-1952. (“I still have that guitar, and there’s no sound that I can’t find in it.”) By then he was supporting himself as a musician, and playing in numerous situations–Pocono’s resorts, high school dances, you name it–often with musicians more than twice his age. After accomplishing all he could in the bar-band scene as a teenager, Smith left the Pocono’s to conquer the Connecticut. He quickly established himself as a “top gun” guitarist and hooked up with the legendary Scratch band, which scorched clubs up and down the East Coast during the mid-70’s. In late 1977, G.E. got his first break in the form of Dan Hartman, fresh off his hit “Instant Replay”. Dan hired G.E. to front his band for a “lip-synch tour” of Europe and the U.S. Upon his return to the East Coast, Smith moved to Manhattan and became the guitarist for Gilda Radner’s 1979 Broadway show “Gilda Live”. Radner and Smith became an item and shortly after married. During that period of Smith’s life another break took place when the blue-eyed soulsters Daryl Hall and John Oates came calling. Not only was Smith hired to play lead guitar for Hall and Oates, he stayed for six years (1979-1985) constantly touring and recording with them, racking up hit after hit with songs like Private Eyes, Man Eater, Kiss on My List, and others. “It was insanely fun, “ he recalls. “We were so big that one year we decided it would be fun to perform during summer –all year round! We toured the northern hemisphere in the summer and the southern hemisphere in the during America’s winter.” Another fortuitous event was the Live Aid and Farm Aid benefit concerts in early 85’. I ended up being the house band backing Mick Jagger, Tina Turner and whoever didn’t have a band. G.E.’s hard work earned him a commanding position in the music industry as a first call blues/rock guitarist, sought out by major recording artists like Jagger, who, shortly after Live Aid, called Smith to work with him on his first solo album, She’s the Boss. (Smith also played on Jagger’s Primitive Cool.) During this period Smith also did a few one-off recordings and concerts with David Bowie, and Peter Wolfe, among other notables. When Hall & Oates decided to take a long break from the music scene, Smith was chosen to be musical director for Saturday Night Live. “The way it happened was, I knew Howard Shore, the show’s original musical director, and producer Lorne Michaels, from my stint with Gilda,” says Smith. “In ’85, when Lorne returned to produce the show again, he asked me to be the musical director. And I was thrilled to take it.” Leading the SNL band for 10 years (1985 – 1995) – it was arguably the best late-night band on television at the time – and G.E. won an Emmy. “I definitely grew a lot from playing with those world-class musicians, especially the horn section. I really had to learn to play in time and in tune. It was a great education.” MORE here: http://getthefunkoutshow.kuci.org

It doesn't happen often, but sometimes in this job of talking to notable people, you get kind of a day off. You talk to someone with such a long history, with such a broad view of the world of entertainment, with so many stories, that your presence is barely required. That was the case with Christine Ohlman. I just needed to pitch a topic or two out there and get out of her way Since 1992, Ohlman has been the singer with the Saturday Night Live Band, watching generations of cast members from Adam Sandler up to the current cast with Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon. She's seen Sinead O'Connor tear up the photo of the pope, Alec Baldwin doing Trump, and everything in between. She can tell you about Paul McCartney and his band playing at rehearsal, dancing with Chris Farley, and all the private jams and cast parties. But SNL alone does not define her. She has shared a stage and/or recorded with just about anyone in the rock and pop world you can think of. She gave a nervous and incredibly polite Eddie Vedder permission to sing next to her backing up Neil Young on the Bob Dylan anniversary show. Elvis Costello, Ian Hunter, Levon Helm, Maceo Parker, George Harrison, Ronnie Spector, Lou Reed, Brian Wilson, Bruce Springsteen. She fronted Big Brother and Holding Company. She was almost in the B-52s. And when she's not backing up someone else, she's leading her own band, Rebel Montez, recording and gigging around the country. She's also a songwriter, with new music in the works after a long recording absence, and that was one of the most interesting parts of our conversation to me. When you've seen the inner workings of some of the best songs in the history of American popular music, as a collector and a collaborator, what happens when you sit down to figure out your own sound. You can find out more about her work at christineohlman.net, and you can find her on Twitter under @christineohlman. She'll be heading into the studio to record the new album this fall, so keep that in mind for 2020. This week's featured track is “Eggshells” from comedian Erica Rhodes' new album Sad Lemon. It's a very tight, well-written set of comedy, and I chose this track because it's one of the riffs we talked about when she was on the show in episode 91. In this track, she talks about her father and his Multiple Sclerosis, and how they can joke about it, but how audiences sometimes get a bit uptight about it. As I have mentioned once or twice on this show in the past, I have MS myself, and though it hinders me less than it does many others, there is still a bit of anxiety over how it might develop in the future. I'd like to think that if that next attack does finally come, I'd like to be able to have a sense of humor about my predicament the way Rhodes' father does, and that people would feel safe to mention it. There are a lot of tracks off the new album I could have used, but this one has a bit of a personal edge for me, and I hope you enjoy it, too. You can find out more about Rhodes at ericarhodescomedy.com and on Twitter under @ericarhodes and look for her on the upcoming NBC comedy competition Bring the Funny, which debuts July 9.
