The 8 Schools of Shaivism, A Non-Sectarian Approach

Recently, we've been asking the question How To Practice Tantra Safely and we proposed that the historical progression of ideas in Shaivism presents a kind of graded syllabus where the traditions that come earlier (like the Vedas and the Shaiva Siddhanta etc.) act as firm foundations for the traditions that emerge later, like the transgressive, non-dual Goddess-oriented traditions (Kaula etc.). Abhinava Gupta presents us with a kind of hierarchy for the various schools in Tantrāloka 29.51:1. Veda (Smārta and Śrauta)2. Vaishnava Tantra (Pañcarātra)3. Pashupāta systems (Lakulīśan etc.)4. Siddhānta5. Vāma 6. Dakshina7. Mata8. Kula9. Kaula10. Trika (kulāt parataram trika)Of course, the fact that he distinguishes "Kula" from "Kaula" is worth noting and perhaps worth discussing in depth on another occasion. In what sense the Trika is the "highest" is also worth questioning. In a sense. the Veda and Siddhānta might be the most important since they are the most foundational and yet in another sense, the Kaula and Trika might be the "best" because they are the most refined, specialized revelations of Lord Shiva for the most advanced practitioners. In any case, the world of Tantra, both Hindu and Buddhist is full of "doxographical hierarchies" like this where other schools are accepted as true and good but only insofar as they can lead to "my" school which necessarily I will position as the greatest. We find this strategy also in the Tibetan Tantra masterpiece "Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness" by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche where the various Buddhist schools are presented in a hierarchy. This approach is called "religious inclusivism" and it is certainly better than "religious exclusivism" which says "my path alone is right and other paths are wrong!." In this video, I argue for a third approach as exemplified by Sri Ramakrishna: "all paths are equally, non-hierarchically good as many aspects of the Infinitely Varied One!" This view is called religious "pluralism" and it is to this view that our lineage belongs. As such, in this video, having carefully examined these various approaches to the many schools of Tantra, we make a case for a non-sectarian reading! We present the major 8 schools of Shaivism as follows:Pāshupata dualism (includes Nyāya and Vaishesika)The Lakulīsha PāshupataShaiva Siddhānta DualismShaiva ViśishtādvaitaViśeshādvaita (Vīra Shaivism)Nandikeśvara ShaivismRaseśvara ShaivismShaiva monism (Advaita Shaiva Vada)You'll find a complete playlist of introductory lectures on Tantra in both theory and practice here. Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show

A prick of the skin; the sorrow of grief; the inevitability of change; our dependence on the whim of the cosmos. Suffering bleeds into every aspect of our existence and, according to Siddhārtha Gautama (the Buddha), the anguish of our misfortune stems from our ignorance and confusion. If we were to see the world for how it really is – a place of impermanence, interdependence, and emptiness – then, according to Buddhism, we might free ourselves from illusion and discover the path to liberation and enlightenment. Today, this insight is shared by over half a billion people. Yet, most philosophy departments in Europe and America offer no courses in Buddhist philosophy and (within the leading journals) academic papers focusing on the central tenets of Buddhist philosophy of religion are vastly outweighed by their Abrahamic (and predominantly Christian) counterparts. Professor Jay Garfield, our guest for this episode, is the exception to this rule. Championing the globalisation of philosophy and reshaping perceptions of Buddhist scholarship, Professor Garfield is Chair of Philosophy at Smith College in Massachusetts, Visiting Professor at Harvard Divinity School, Professor at Melbourne University, and adjunct Professor at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies. Named amongst the 50 most influential philosophers of the past decade – with over 30 books and over 200 publications – it is safe to say that Professor Garfield is one of the leading exponents of Buddhist philosophy in contemporary academia. For Garfield, if philosophy won't diversify, then let's call it out for what it is: a colonial discipline that ignores the rich and relevant insights of non-Western thought. As philosophers, we cannot afford to ignore the metaphysical, ethical, epistemological, and existential insights of Buddhist scholarship. It's time to engage with Buddhism, and rid ourselves of our prejudices, ignorance, and confusion. Buddhism is a philosophy of the present, not a philosophy of the past, and it's time we treated it that way. This episode is produced in partnership with The Global Philosophy of Religion Project at University of Birmingham, led by Yujin Nagasawa and funded by the John Templeton Foundation. Contents Part I. Vishal Mangalwadi is a world-renowned Christian philosopher and author of over 20 books, including “This Book Changed Everything: The Bible's Amazing Impact on Our World.” In this episode, Vishal shares his testimony of coming to faith in Jesus after an earnest search for absolute truth in both religion and philosophy. In this search for truth, Vishal came to the realization that modern philosophical skepticism in the West had only reached what Siddhārtha Gautama (The Buddha) had taught more than 2,000 years earlier. In this episode, Vishal traces the history of skeptical thought from east to west from influential individuals like Buddha, David Hume, and even Kurt Cobain. Vishal demonstrates how genuine hope, purpose, and progress can only come to a person or nation that remains rooted in truth. Vishal shows us where fatalist and relativistic thought lead to and why the West will never see lasting fruit outside of the absolute truth that mankind was created in God's image, lost that image by sin, and can only regain it through a real relationship with the Creator, Jesus Christ. Can we know truth? Can we trust the Bible? These are questions we find answers to in this episode of The Postscript. Visit https://www.lfbi.org/

Titres joués, extraits de l'album Three Little Words Three little Words - While We wait - Mind made up - Love Take Over L'artiste montréalaise se produire le 20 octobre au New Morning (Paris) Puis dans la #SessionLive, nous recevons Philippe Prohom pour la sortie de son nouvel album Brille (Single Bel) « Je suis heureux ! The Navkar Mantra (literally, "Nine Line Mantra") is a central mantra in Jainism. The initial 5 lines consist of salutations to various sanctified souls, and the latter 4 lines are explanatory in nature, highlighting the benefits and greatness of this mantra. Namo Arihantânam - I bow to the Arihantâs (Conquerors). Namo Siddhânam - I bow to the Siddhâs (Liberated Souls). Namo Âyariyânam - I bow to the Âchâryas (Preceptors or Spiritual Leaders). Namo Uvajjhâyanam - I bow to the Upadhyâya (Teachers). Namo Loe Savva Sahûnam - I bow to all the Sadhûs in the world (Saints or Sages). Eso Panch Namokkaro, Savva Pâvappanâsano, Mangalanam Cha Savvesim, Padhamam Havai Mangalam. This fivefold salutation (mantra) destroys all sins and of all auspicious mantras, (it) is the foremost auspicious one.

How to #awakentheSoul and your inner Love? How did Buddha attain enlightenment? This #lovemeditation can help you find your true self and to learn your own divine nature. #LotusFlower is a spiritual practice that brought Siddhārtha Gautama to #enlightenment and transformed him into the Buddha — a god-like being. Some pharaohs of Ancient Egypt also mastered this practice. The echoes of immaculate perfection of this practice can be found in Hindu books in Sanskrit, in ancient books of Chinese sages, and Ancient Greek epics. The technique is quite simple and anyone can learn how to do it. Everything about this unique #spiritualpractice and meditation, you can read in the book by Anastasia Novykh — "Sensei of Shambhala. It was a day like any other. As ever, his mind was a flurry of thoughts, worries, and anxieties, stimulated by coffee and the bright light of his phone. In a bid to relieve his stress, he put his phone in his pocket, and tried to notice the details he would usually ignore.  As he walked past the pharmacy, he saw a sick man coughing and spluttering; he was throwing medication back to stop his disease from decaying his body. Jack kept walking and came across an old woman waiting at a bus stop. She was fragile, crooked, and anxious; clearly age had taken much from her. Crossing the road away from the bus stop, he waited for the traffic to pass. Driving slowly past him was a hearse: a coffin on full display, surrounded by flowers, proceeded by a stream of weeping mourners.  Jack fell to his knees, overwhelmed with despair, “we all get sick, we all age, and we all die. We cannot escape this fate!” His head against the pavement, he didn't move for almost an hour. When he got up, he was approached by a homeless man, to whom he said, “sorry, I don't have any change.” The man replied, “It is you who needs a little change, young monk. I know why you fall to your knees in despair: the inescapable suffering of life weighs on us all. Let me tell you of someone who was once like you, who tried to remove suffering from our minds… let me tell you the story of Siddhartha Gotama, The Buddha.” Contents Part I. When he got up, he was approached by a homeless man, to whom he said, “sorry, I don’t have any change.” The man replied, “It is you who needs a little change, young monk. She founded Altnews Science to challenge pseudoscience in India. She has noticed how much alternative medicines like Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Naturopathy, Siddh and Unani have grown in our country and the dangers they pose to us and the ones we love.So she founded Altnews Science to debunk misinformation and share the real science behind the news. For example, she has written several excellent articles regarding COVID-19 and even the Patanjali Scam that tried to take advantage of people during the pandemic. All that and a lot more await you in this episode. The Middle way is an ancient Buddhist concept that encourages people seeking enlightenment to follow a path of balance and moderation, not go to extremes. It was developed by the Buddha, originally known as Siddhārtha Gautama, who achieved enlightenment in the 6th Century BCE, and was the founder of Buddhism. So why bring this up? With so many people seeking awakening and greater consciousness, it's more important than ever to tune in to your own guidance, and follow moderate paths that work FOR you - not ones where you sacrifice or suffer in the name of enhanced well-being and enlightenment! So helping you navigate and define your own middle way is what today's show is all about.

Siddhārtha Gautama (Sanskrit: सिद्धार्थ गौतम; Pali: Siddhattha Gotama) was a spiritual teacher from ancient India who founded Buddhism. In most Buddhist traditions, he is regarded as the Supreme Buddha of our age, "Buddha" meaning "awakened one" or "the enlightened one." The Unfolding: "Electric Buddha" "Prana" "I've Got A Zebra - She Can Fly" "Love Supreme Deal Meditations Gabor Szabo: "Three King Fishers" Excerpt from Jack Kerouac's Book "Wake Up: A Life of the Buddha" Sitar music by Ravi Shankar Tibetan Sacred Temple Music: "Invoking Kindness thru Sound" Lazy Smoke: "There Was A Time" Jade: "My Mary (More Than Ever)" Jonathan Halper: "Leaving My Old Life Behind / I'm a Hermit"... ...mysterious track from Kenneth Anger's Puce Moment Alan Watts: "Onion Chant" from The First Psychedelic LP "This Is It" (1962) Ram Dass (aka Richard Apert) "1983 Harvard Reuion with Timothy Leary" "All form in the universe, including your mind and your thought, is part of law, it’s unfolding lawfully, it’s the karma unfolding, just law. And within that there is no freedom. There really is no freedom in form. The freedom comes as the formless creates the form. There’s where the freedom is. And that freedom, of the formless coming into form, is a place from which you stand, or you don’t stand, in which you experience the creation of your own universe around you." (courtesy of Psychedleic Salon) Rodriguez: "Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour" How to Blow Your Mind & Have a Freak-Out Party It's easy to organize a FREAK-OUT PARTY, all you have to do is relax your mind and let things happen. Digging wild psychedelic colors, swinging with way-out sounds, grooving on yourself, grooving on everything at once. LOVE. To set the scene for the party, spray pop bottles or an old chair with DAY-GLOW PAINT in bright colors, then light the whole room with DAY-GLOW light (you can buy these in any hardware or art-supply stores). This will make everything glow with weird luminous psychedelic colors. Guaranteed to blow their minds right away. You can really turn your guests on with a mind-blowing light show with two things you probably have in your house right now: a TV set and a see-through kaleidoscope (not the kind with colored glass in the bottom). First put a rock and roll record on the phonograph. Turn on your TV and make the image jump in time to the music by turning the vertical knob all the way to the left or right. Now point the kaleidoscope at the TV screen. This is a guaranteed TRIP. Now play the same record at another speed. YOU ARE NOW FREAKING OUT. Enjoy it. TURN ON yourself and your guests to an ancient Indian chant which brings ecstasy and peace of mind. When the chanting begins on the A side of this record join in. It will really BLOW YOUR MIND, a guaranteed trip into another dimension of consciousness. George Harrison has said of this chant (International Times No. 13) "...saying Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna...it's not the words you're saying, it's the sounds...sounds are vibrations and the more you can put into that vibration, the more you can get out...these vibrations that you get through yoga, cosmic chants...it's such a buzz, it buzzes you out of everywhere." These are the words: HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE Wear bright really out-of-sight combinations, things that look strange together. GIRLS! This is a chance to wear something exotic and fantastic that you wouldn't get a chance to put on. Perhaps spray an old pair of shoes with DAY-GLOW and wear DAY-GLOW tights to match. Bright oranges and greens, goofy jewelry, peacock feathers as earrings and a super mini-skirt. GUYS! The idea is to look cool and mysterious, so wear mocassins, prayer beads, or Indian bells, psychedelic buttons, and groovy mod clothes. If you really want to blow your guests' minds, paint your face in wild colors. It's a chance to use some way-out make-up effects. Paint flowers on your arms and wear a mystical PSYCHEDISK on your forehead. Hypnotize your friends with its hallucinating (sic) effect. Invite your grooviest friends, people who really swing, and enjoy exploring new and exciting experiences. BLOW YOUR MIND, FREAK OUT, etc. on pieces of colored paper, then glue them on to a piece of tinfoil and fold. This will let them know what kind of scene it's going to be. Ask everyone to bring things they really dig: records, candy, people, flowers, books on flying saucers, kooky things. Tell them it's a costume party and to come in their most out-of-sight clothes. Tell them it's going to be a happening; they'll get the message. By now your guests should be really grooving with your head. Get everyone involved in way-out conversations. Read your horoscopes. Compare the personalities of people born under different signs. Some other FREAK OUT conversations: Did you know that Marilyn Monroe owned a jewel from Tutenkamen's tomb? Should we give America back to the Indians? (Ask this seriously.) What is the sound of one hand clapping? How many Emmett Grogans are there?
