In Episode #5, Daniel Burstein, Senior Director of Content & Marketing, MarketingSherpa, interviewed  Jonathan Fashbaugh, President, Pro Impressions Marketing (https://www.proimpressionsgroup.com/).Some lessons from Fashbaugh that emerged in the discussion:Popular content isn't always the best content for the client. His team blogged on a dentist's website about the vampire fang effect that was used in the TV show “True Blood.” The post explained how people could get porcelain veneers that looked like fangs…only problems was, the dentist did not offer that service. Well-written content put together by someone who understands the business can go a very long way toward the client's success. Fashbaugh went to seminars with a dentist, shared a hotel with him, and was his hands-on patient for the courses they attended together. He used this course as experience to help inform the website he was building for the dentist. Attention to detail in a niche pays dividends. Dentists have taught Fashbaugh to be very picky. There was a stock photo floating around that many design companies were using. But if you looked closely, the model was missing one of her teeth toward the back of her mouth. Fashbaugh also shared lessons he learned from the people he collaborated with in his career:Robin Schmachtenberger, Owner, idolum – Don't go around your supervisor, and you don't throw your weight around as the new person.  Bill Fukui, Senior Director of Business Development, MedShark Digital – Always get the client or prospect on the phone before you give up the goods.  Jeff Haddad, Owner and Dentist, Rochester Advanced Dentistry – Communicating with consumers in their language. Articles (and a course) mentioned in this episode:Become a Marketer-Philosopher: Create and optimize high-converting webpages (https://meclabs.com/course/)– free digital marketing course from MECLABS Institute, MarketingSherpa's parent organizationBanner Blindness: Why your marketing messages are hiding in plain sight (https://marketingexperiments.com/digital-advertising/banner-blindness-messages-hiding)Ask MarketingSherpa: Copywriting for non-native English speakers (https://sherpablog.marketingsherpa.com/copywriting/non-native-english-speakers/)Quick Win Intensive (https://meclabs.com/QuickWinIntensive) – from MECLABSValue Proposition Workshop (https://meclabs.com/services/value-proposition) – from MECLABSMarketing 101: What is a Design Brief? In this 19th interview with a unicorn start-up leader, we are joined by Mark Lee, CEO and co-founder of Splashtop. In 2006, Mark co-founded with Robert Ha, Thomas Deng, and Philip Sheu, three MIT colleagues, DeviceVM, designing and selling the industry's first browser OS that allowed PC users to get online, securely, in less than 5 seconds. That OS product was named Splashtop and, as of 2010, the company pivoted, changing its name to Splashtop and becoming the company it is today: a provider of Remote Access software. In this episode, Mark highlights the importance of building a reliable team from the ground up and explains the trust relationship he has with those university colleagues he met over three decades ago who are, in large part, the key to the company's success. Several VCs have even demonstrated their blind trust in Mark and his fellows in his entrepreneurial journey, providing funding without even seeing a business plan, based solely on the experience they had working hand in hand with Mark, Robert, Thomas and Philip's previous startup. After years of bootstrapping, they decided to seek funding for Splashtop to achieve unicorn status. Not because they needed the money, as the company was generating millions of dollars of cash flow per month, but to position themselves in the market. For them, being a unicorn allowed the company to have greater visibility, attract talent and move towards an IPO. In fact, Mark says they have yet to touch a single dollar from that round. However, Mark also acknowledges that one of the hardest moments of his career was having to lay off dozens of employees with whom he had close relationships when DeviceVM had to pivot at the start of the past decade. Our guest also discusses the unstoppable evolution of the Remote Economy with remote becoming the new norm and how the pandemic accelerated the demand for its products by companies of all kinds, but also by educational and medical research institutions, to, among others, combat Covid-19. The interview, as usual, was co-hosted with Russell Goldsmith of the csuite podcast. We have distilled the most valuable, actionable insights from our first 15 interviews with leaders of unicorn companies and bottled them in our book ‘Growing without borders: The unicorn CEO guide to communication and culture'. Topics: Jerry brings up clients that you need to be more up front with billing for your time so there is no confusion that can lead to an unpaid bill. He talks about one particular client that has aging hardware/software and they are scrambling for support. He tries to set expectations early. That rings a familiar bell for Joe who might be more inclined to start helping someone right away. With Sam’s monthly clients, he has formal paperwork that mentions “discovery”. Often times customers are more inclined to accept that if they know it will save them costs moving forward if you are already familiar with their environment. Jerry talks about smaller clients to possibly start small and move incrementally to earn some money up front. “Technical debt” is a term Joe coins from all of this. Realizing Joe may have missed an opportunity for calling out chargeable items, he realizes that he may need to get more comfortable onboarding a larger client. Sam talks about he learned from a similar situation. Jerry talks about a very strange problem his client who could not find any of her mail, her inbox was empty (and Time Machine wouldn’t work!) Joe remembers back when emails would disappear after updating to Catalina. The group discusses the many issues everyone has with mail and the recovery service. Tim Nyberg of The Mac Guys shared some feedback about using the mobile support feature of Splashtop which leads into a conversation about using it. He has a remote support feature on his website (themacguys.com) that helps you download the correct version of Splashtop. Happy new year! This episode continues our series on DIY pentest dropboxes with a focus on automation - specifically as it relates to automating the build of Windows 10, Windows Server 2019, Kali and Ubuntu VMs. Here's the resources I talk about in more detail on today's episode that helps make the automagic happen: Windows VMs This article from Windowscentral.com does a great job of walking you through building a Windows 10 unattended install. A key piece of the automation is the autounattend.xml file, which you can somewhat automatically build here, but I think you'll want to install the Windows System Image Manager to really get in the tech weeds and fully tweak that answer file. The handy AnyBurn utility will help you make ISOs out of your Windows 10 / Server 2019 customized builds. Ubuntu VMs I set out to build a Ubuntu 18.x box because Splashtop only supports a few Linux builds. I found a freakin' sweet project called Linux unattended installation that helps you build the preseed.cfg file (kind of like the Windows equivalent of an answer file). The area of preseed.cfg I've been spending hours dorking around with is: d-i preseed/late_command string Under this section you can customize things to your heart's content. For example, you could automatically pull down and install all OS packages/updates and a bunch of third party utils you want: in-target sh -c 'apt-get update'; in-target sh -c 'apt-get upgrade -y'; in-target sh -c 'apt-get install curl dnsrecon git net-tools nmap openssh-server open-vm-tools-desktop python3.8 python3-pip python-libpcap ubuntu-gnome-desktop unzip wget xsltproc -y'; Finally, the project provides a slick script that will wrap up your Ubuntu build plus an SSH key into a ready-to-go ISO: build-iso.sh ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub ~/Desktop/My-kool-kustomized-Ubuntu.iso Awesome! Kali VMs There is some decent documentation on building a preseed.cfg file for Kali. But the best resource I found with some excellent prebuilt config file is this kali-preseed project. Once your seed file is built, it's super easy to simply host it on a machine in your network and let Kali pull it during install. For example, if you've got a Linux box with Python on the network at 192.168.0.7, just make a temporary folder with the preseed.cfg file in it and then run: sudo python3 -m http.server 80 Then, in your virtual environment, create a new VM and boot it to a Kali NetInstaller image. At the splash screen, hit Tab and it'll display a command line you can edit. Remove the line that says something like preseed/file=/cdrom/simple-cdd/default.preseed, add auto=true and then the URL path to your preseed file, such as url=http://192.168.0.7/preseed.cfg. The Kali will ask for a few questions, such as a username and hostname to configure, and then if you're watching your machine hosting preseed.cfg, you'll see your Kali machine grab the config file and take care of the rest from there! Got a better/cooler/funner/faster/awesomer way to do this type of automation? Let us know!

Buckle up! This is one of my favorite episodes. Today I'm kicking off a two-part series that walks you through a narrative of a recent internal pentest I worked on. I was able to get to Domain Admin status and see the "crown jewels" data, so I thought this would be a fun and informative narrative to share. Below are some highlights of topics/tools/techniques discussed: Building a pentest dropbox The timing is perfect - my pal Paul (from Project7) and Dan (from PlexTrac) have a two-part Webinar series on building your own $500 DIY Pentest Lab, but the skills learned in the Webinars translate perfectly into making a pentest dropbox. Head to our webinars page for more info. Securing a pentest dropbox What I did with my Intel NUC pentest dropbox is build a few VMs as follows: Win 10 pro management box with Bitlocker drive encryption and Splashtop (not a sponsor) which I like because it offers 2FA and an additional per-machine password/PIN. I think I spent $100/year for it. Kali attack box with an encrypted drive (Kali makes this easy by offering you this option when you first install the OS). Scoping/approaching a pentest From what I can gather, there are (at least) two popular schools of thought as it relates to approaching a pentest: From the perimeter - where you do a lot of OSINT, phish key users, gain initial access, and then find a path to privilege from there. Assume compromise - assume that eventually someone will click a phishing link and give bad guys a foothold on the network, so you have the pentester bring in a Kali box, plug it into the network, and the test begins from that point. Pentest narrative For one of the tests I worked on, here were some successes and challenges I had along the way: Check out the show notes at 7MS.us as there's lots more good info there!

TCEA 2012 had the Tech Chicks all a-twitter. Ha ha! Anyway, this is our round-up podcast about the sessions we attended and the vendors we loved. Adobe Academy - Anna attended a great hands-on session on content creation with Adobe. Check out the Adobe Education (http://www.adobe.com/education.html) site for great resources including lesson plans, ideas and tutorials. Jamey Osborne (http://jameyo.com/) had a great session on creating iOS web apps! Brush up your Javascript! Promethean (http://support.prometheanplanet.com/server.php?show=nav.17508) - We love the new features in ActivInspire! Lynell Burmark (http://www.lynellburmark.org/) had a session, IWB apps: From the iPad to the Wall which had us revisit an app we'd definitely overlooked... Doceri (http://doceri.com/) is an awesome app for controlling your Mac or Windows machine from your iPad in the classroom. It has great markup tools and a nifty stylus which is handy for doing the drawing tools. Splashtop Whiteboard (http://www.splashtop.com/whiteboard) is still a favorite of ours, too, don't get us wrong. The pricing scheme of Doceri and Splashtop are such that you can pick whichever is most cost effective for your situation. FableVision (http://www.fablevision.com/) asked us to show off their fine software! We picked our favorites, Animation-ish (http://shop.fablevisionlearning.com/animationish/fa/shop.detail/productID/2542/) , Big Screen Books (http://shop.fablevisionlearning.com/big-screen-books-ish/fa/shop.detail/productID/2766/), and Stationary Studio (http://www.fablevision.com/stationerystudio). Definitely check them out! We had a QR code session with a great group of educators. Thanks for all who attended! Here are the resources we shared (http://techchicktips.wikispaces.com/QRQrazy). Atomic Learning (http://atomiclearning.com) did a neat thing with their t-shirts at the booth. Check out the cool video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3OntdDRlJI) Loved seeing our Twitter friends @paulrwood, @technolibrary, @ipadsammy, @bryanpdoyle, @rrodgers, @neontetra and @mrhooker for BBQ and donuts! And then them and more including @kevinhoneycutt, @mradkins, and @jmaklary, and our local friends @JGraytxchk, @hlandez, @kevinfoxxy, and @jessicablanca at  the official Twitter meet up. Clever swag included a chair massage at some booth with an A... oh wait, Helen had to look it up for us. Absolute Software  (http://www.absolute.com/) offered the chair massages. And then we think it was Flexile (http://www.flexile.net/) that was offering caricatures using their tools to show video conferencing and interactive whiteboards. Inspiration (http://www.inspiration.com/) is coming out with an iPad app which looks really awesome but is missing a critical feature in our opinion. Listen to find out what that is. Anna will probably still buy it because she's an iOS app junkie. We still love the Lock -n- Charge (http://www.lockncharge.com/) cart for charging the laptops. They have iPad charging carts, too, and they have REALLY thought out the needs of a charging cart! Bretford (http://bretford.com/category/seating/soft-seating/motiv-seating/) furniture has built-in power. Can we have this for our houses? We did a mobile learning session and want to give a special thanks to two of our new favorite apps, DoInk Express and GroupShot, that gave out promo codes for us to raffle! DoInk Express (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/doink-express-messaging-photos/id414067189?mt=8) is an awesome app for iPhone/iPod for tweening and flipbook animation. It's the baby cousin to the DoInk for iPad  (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/doink-animation-drawing/id364762290?mt=8) app we talked about in a previous episode. It's a mere $1.99 and worth every penny. GroupShot (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/groupshot/id488709126?mt=8) is a magic app. MAGIC, we tell you! When you take several photos of a group of people trying to get the one perfect shot, you can actually merge the best heads from each shot into one. And it's MAGIC. Wow! Seriously! Check it out! It's 99 cents! Buy it now! In conclusion, it was another great TCEA!
