David Wolfenden in conversation with David Eastaugh n 1982, the Lorries' manager Dave Hall provided independent record label Red Rhino with a cassette of the group's demos. Impressed by the quality of the songs, Red Rhino label head "Tony K" (Tony Kostrzewa) signed the band and immediately released "Beating My Head" unchanged from the demo as the band's debut single. Fagan and Smith soon departed the band, to be replaced by Dave Wolfenden and Paul Southern respectively. Afterwards, bassist Southern was replaced by Leon Phillips. While numerous additional personnel changes would occur in the history of the band, Wolfenden became a mainstay and a frequent songwriting partner of Reed's during the band's most productive period. In 1983 and 1984, the band released several more singles (including "He's Read" and "Monkeys On Juice", which reached No. 9 on the NME indie chart). John Peel was an early supporter, and the band recorded two radio sessions for him in March and November 1983 (released on CD in 2014 as BBC Sessions 1983 - 1984, part of the band's 3-CD compilation See the Fire).

The Holocaust and the English School: The Refuge that Saved Young Lives by Barbara WolfendenAs the Nazi threat spread across Europe, prominent English citizens established a school for traumatized refugee Jewish children. Pupils and teachers alike showed resilience in the face of war-time deprivations, facing down the suspicions of locals while mastering the intricacies of the English language. The German-born administrators, themselves refugees, helped the children through loneliness and fear with a progressive-inspired education which they graced with kindness. The teenagers watched the orange skies lighted by Luftwaffe bombings of London forty miles to the north yet, still ignorant of the horrors of the Holocaust and the fate of their parents, they came of age in a place open to fun and comradeship. In the process, they formed unbreakable, lifelong bonds. It was the author's husband, Martin Owens, born Martin Friedenfeld, whose story inspired the creation of this book. Wrenched from his family in Vienna at ten, Martin landed in the supportive arms of an extraordinary boarding school in England. Surrounded by others who shared the same fate for being Jewish, he transformed himself from persecuted child to English-speaking teenager who loved classical music and sport. In his last and final country, Martin became an American soldier, a quietly modest and successful employee, and a cherished father and husband.Barbara Wolfenden has divided her professional career as a writer/manager for a major computer company, and earlier, as co-founder of Tampa Preparatory School, where she taught Spanish and held the position of Director of Studies. She is the author of Are We There Yet?, a collection of stories about women and issues of equality and fulfillment in the post women's lib era. She lives in a small town west of Boston, and enjoys the company of her friends and family while continuing to write short stories that deal with working women's issues. A former UN Guide and New England coastal sailor, she has traveled much of the world. She holds an MA in Spanish Language and Literature from Brown University.https://www.amazon.com/Holocaust-English-School-Refuge-Saved/dp/1648959229/ref=sr_1_1?crid=11ZI92QH3R094&keywords=9781648959226&qid=1657038673&sprefix=9781648959646%2Caps%2C1102&sr=8-1http://www.Stratton-Press.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/82522sp2.mp3

Podcast Episode x Season 2 - Eden David Wolfenden, Founder & CEODavid was always perplexed by the fact that most of his peers could talk for hours about video games and get really excited in the process, but showed no interest in discussing investment strategies and wealth building. Even though the latter will have an oversized impact on their lives. So he had the idea to make wealth planning fun and addictive by creating a game around it with digital representations that would grow as your investments grow. It wasn't an easy road but clearly something David has been enjoying tremendously. His biggest advice: The world around you was built by other people. If you want to build something, build it. But there is much more to learn from his quest. Listen, learn, and be entertained. In this essay, Marcus Collins considers what the Beatles thought about anarchists and what anarchists thought about the Beatles in sixties Britain. He identifies curiosity and ambivalence on both sides, as anarchists sought to contend with the strange phenomena of Beatlemania, the counterculture and pop stars engaged in political campaigns. Marcus Collins is Senior Lecturer in Cultural History at Loughborough University. He is author of The Beatles and Sixties Britain (2020), Modern Love (2003), co-author of Why Study History? (2020) and editor of The Permissive Society and Its Enemies (2007). He is currently writing the second volume of his study of the Beatles (The Beatles' World) and a short history of British documentaries about lesbians and gay men (Arrested Development: Broadcasting and Homosexuality from Wolfenden to AIDS) as well as embarking on a collaborative project on attitudinal change in the global sixties. In collaboration with musician/songwriter Daz Lamberton, Stu has enjoyed creating that debut album, which has been put together in a great studio, tweaked during lockdown, and is now ready to go.

Rosie Wolfenden & Harriet Vine founded their handmade jewellery company Tatty Devine in 1999 very much as a 'side hustle'; selling their first pieces from a market stall in Camden after discovering the discarded fabric and sample books that they would create their first collection from. Having worked together for the past 20 years, Rosie & Harriet know a thing or two about making collaborations work, having seen successful collaborations with the V&A, Rob Ryan, & Anthony Gormley, to name a few. In this episode, Rosie & Harriet share their journey from that market stall to the pages of Vogue, their approach to sustainability, and how they found their signature style. A must listen for those dreaming of turning a side hustle into their dream career! In the second podcast for our new series 'Agricultural Mavericks' I spoke to Bethan Wolfenden from Bento Lab to find out more about their DNA analysis kit and the journey they've been on, forming an initial idea into a product.
For our third National Life Stories podcast Charlie Morgan spoke to Steven Dryden, Broadcast Recordings Curator at the British Library and co-curator of the exhibition Gay UK: Love Law and Liberty. Gay UK ran from June-September 2017 and marked 50 years since the 1967 Sexual Offences Act and 60 years since the Wolfenden Report. The exhibition was extremely popular and it just so happened that it contained a lot of oral histories! In podcast you'll from interviews which discuss organizations like the Homosexual Law Reform Society and the Gay Liberation Front, as well experiences ranging from World War 2 to 1970s nightclubs. You'll also hear Steven's views on how he chose clips for the exhibition and how it felt to edit, or “hack to pieces", those same clips. Clips in the episode are taken from the following interviews: John Alcock, C456/003 Hall-Carpenter Oral History Project: cadensa.bl.uk/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/…hdata1=CKEY4014153 Tony Dyson, C456/074 Hall-Carpenter Oral History Project: cadensa.bl.uk/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/…hdata1=CKEY4014176 Maureen Duffy, C1276/03 Authors’ Lives: cadensa.bl.uk/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/…hdata1=CKEY7097153 Mary McIntosh, C1420/11 Sisterhood & After: The Women’s Liberation Oral History Project: cadensa.bl.uk/uhtbin/cgisirsi/x/…hdata1=CKEY7563647 Jonathan Blake, C456/104 Hall-Carpenter Oral History Project: sounds.bl.uk/Oral-history/Obser…0456X0104XX-0001V0 If you’d like to learn more check out our collection guide on Oral histories of sexuality, reproductive health and prostitution: www.bl.uk/collection-guides/or…lth-and-prostitution National Life Stories: www.bl.uk/projects/national-life-stories Gay UK: www.bl.uk/press-releases/2017/…-the-british-library
This episode we chatted to Bethan Wolfenden, the co-founder of Bento Bioworks, a biotech startup that has created a 'laptop size laboratory'. This kit allows the user to perform simple DNA analysis and dramatically reduces the cost of the components you'd need to analyse samples, thus lowering the barrier to entry for molecular biology. This episode is a very candid discussion about founding the company, as we cover the difficult decision to move on from a PhD to develop the company and the challenges of crowdfunding the product (of which they had a successful KickStarter campaign). We also meander through the burgeoning DIY bio community, how the IGEM competition has informed her attitude towards science done within the confines of academia, and what citizen science can actually achieve (when it's not reduced to data collection).
