What's it like to grow up in Generation Z? Often labeled as the lonely generation, the young adults of our society grew up in a confusing time, warping their sense of belonging, self, and community with the help of the Internet and social media. We spoke to Anaya, who is a beautiful soul and an open book. She gets in-depth about a topic we explored last week – suicide. She is a suicide-attempt survivor and she bravely told us about her struggles with mental illness and how she got help (with so much support from her mother). She also gives helpful tips for parents – from a child's POV – on how to talk to your kids struggling. Anaya was fortunate to attend a rehabilitation center and she shares what she learned from her time there and how listeners also struggling can add these options to their wellness toolkit. In our previous episode, we talked to a mother whose son died by suicide. Let's continue to learn and bring awareness to suicide, the second leading cause of death of our young generation. In an incredibly redemptive interview, Jake and Mike sit down with Emon Alexander Mahban, who survived a suicide attempt with a firearm. With the bullet still lodged in his skull, this discussion explores where Emon was mentally during that time, the series of events that led up to the suicide attempt, the events of that night, and where he is in life now.  Emon's story serves both as inspiration and a cautionary tale. Suicide is often so impulsive that no one sees it coming, and yet, the demons lurking beneath the surface can sometimes arise when we least expect it. And still...life is worth living.

Often when a person attempts suicide, we think there must have been signs ahead of the event. But this is not always the case, especially when the attempt is made by a child. This is the message Brandy and Nick Lumbert want every parent to understand.  In 2018, their 12-year-old daughter tried to kill herself in their home. Despite going without oxygen for an extended period, she survived but doctors at Cook Children's weren't sure if she would ever walk, talk or have the same level of cognitive function again. She spent weeks in the ICU, followed by months in rehabilitation therapy. Amazingly, Payton surpassed everyone's expectations. Now 17, Payton and her family are sharing their story to let others know there's always hope. On this very special episode of Raising Joy, we talk to the Lumbert family about Payton's suicide attempt and how it has changed their family forever.

Had an amazing time hearing Jarrod share his journey from Addict to Peer Recovery Specialist. Jarrod is a Suicide Attempt Survivor. He was forced to make a U-Turn in life. He was on his way to death or prison. Jarrod focused on self-improvement during his recovery. He understood the importance of reading books that had purpose and could better his life. He learned about the law of attraction. Good in good out, bad in bad out! Jarrod made sure that his goals and motives were written down on a daily basis. He is always focused on his recovery and figured out a way to go on the defensive. He has reversed engineered his recovery process. He has become intimately engaged with his recovery process. He believes too many addicts become comfortable with sobriety that they stop healing and growing. Jarrod said that being comfortable is the enemy of progression. Andrew Jensen is a professional golfer and mental health Bell Let’s Talk Ambassador. In his teens, Andrew began to suffer with depression, culminating in a suicide attempt at 16 years old. In those difficult teenage years, golf was his refuge and the one place he felt meaning and purpose. It wasn’t until having to deal with the immense stress and pressure of professional golf that the game became his undoing.  After struggling through an extremely difficult rookie campaign in 2008, being dropped by his sponsors in 2009, and finally an injury in 2010, Andrew’s poor play and off course struggles re-opened the door for his depression and suicidal thoughts to enter his life. His 2011 season was his worst to date, forcing him to retire and give up on the game he loved for so many years. In the fall of 2011, two failed suicide attempts in a 3-week span had Andrew hospitalized. Most importantly, he was finally ready to get help and walk a road of recovery towards better health.  Returning to professional golf in 2013, Andrew gained status PGA Tour Canada. Though his starts were sparse, the Tour took it upon themselves to share Andrew’s story of strength and courage on the PGA Tour Canada TV show and YouTube channel. The response Andrew received helped him fully realize his place as an advocate for mental health across Canada.  Andrew now finds himself at the forefront of the dialogue on mental health overall and as a Bell Let’s Talk Ambassador, and the effort to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health as a public speaker traveling the country and sharing his story with charities, schools, associations, and corporate Canada.   *** For Show Notes, Key Points, Contact Info, Resources Mentioned, & More on this episode please visit our website: RockBottom2RockinIt.com. *** Feedback? In this episode, Al interviews Chris Agudo, delivery driver, suicide attempt survivor, author, and cofounder of Living Is So Big (recorded 2-24-20). Chris can put his finger on four things that occurred in a short period of time that threw him into a dangerous, downward spiral of depression; 1) unrelenting, unexplained massive headaches, 2) a broken relationship, 3) poor grades, and 4) a tragic accident that killed two of his friends. Chris decided to visit his brother and a friend for a final goodbye before he would end his life. After an attempted suicide in the middle of the night in the woods, followed immediately by an unexpected outpouring of love and care, Chris spent seven days in a psychiatric hospital. It was while he was hospitalized that a doctor shared with his father that he needed to make sure Chris had reasons to live. His dad, without hesitation, created a campaign titled "Living Is So Big". When Chris got out of the hospital, he and his parents took several road trips to share their campaign with others. They spoke at public events, passed out bracelets, and asked others to share what they were grateful for. Together, Chris and his father have written several books. In this episode, Al interviews Andy Grant, transformational energy coach, founder of Real Men Feel, best-selling author & suicide attempt survivor (recorded 2-11-20). At age five, Andy began to be molested by a neighbor who was a family friend. He experienced suicidal thoughts from the very young age of eight years old and had his first, of many, attempts at twelve. At age fifteen, in a five-minute appointment based solely on a hereditary factor, Andy was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Andy would tell school counselors and therapists what he believed they wanted to hear, yet five of his suicide attempts landed him in a psychiatric hospital and several different diagnoses. One in-patient hospitalization during his high school days involved medications that had a toxic effect that led to full body tremors and tactile hallucinations. The doctors had claimed that they believed his friends had brought him LSD, yet much later in life Andy retrieved the paperwork that actually stated that he had had a toxic reaction to being over medicated. Andy is the author of "Still Here: How to Succeed in Life After Failing At Suicide" and several other books. He is the founder of the podcast, website and blog titled Real Men Feel. Living with a mental health challenge of any type, often means that you go through many stages of exploration until you reach a true diagnosis that will allow you and your helping professional to put a plan in place of the proper treatment and self-care routine. Initially these types of changes in our mental health can often lead to having more questions than answers, but in time the new insight gained can be invaluable to our recovery. My guest on this episode of the Beyond Your Past Podcast, John Dickson, lived with Major Depressive Disorder for 40 years, before being officially diagnosed. As he shares on his blog, The3inMe.ga, ...Over the majority of that period, my illness was undiagnosed and untreated. It’s only in hindsight that I can see that I’ve experienced many depressive episodes. Each episode was both darker and longer in duration than its predecessor. The most severe episode culminated in a suicide attempt in September 2014. It was after this attempt that I was diagnosed as having Major Depressive Disorder. More recently I’ve been diagnosed with Bipolar II Disorder. Bipolar II Disorder differs from Bipolar Disorder in having a hypomanic state rather than a manic state. Hypomanic simply means less manic. I’m still coming to terms with this new diagnosis and don’t yet fully understand it. I’ll share what I learn in this blog. Depression is the silent killer. This is true especially, among men. Men remain silent and steadfast while they suffer. I was one of those men. I suffered in silence until I succumbed. This lesson has taught me to speak out about the dangers of silence and in this blog, I speak out. I also have a son and family who I love very much. This blog is for them. Here they can see for themselves that I’m recovering. John and I first met at the HealtheVoices 2018 Conference, in Chicago. We struck up a friendship there and have kept in touch since that event. You can listen to some thoughts that I had about the conference on a special edition podcast that I recorded this past spring.  During the podcast, we cover topics including: Why John is so open about sharing his mental health struggles. More about the events that lead to an attempt in taking his own life in September, 2014. How those events lead him into not only his blog writing but advocacy work. Talking specifically with your therapist or counselor about specific diagnosis treatments and options. How his life has changed since the events in 2014, including the new diagnosis of Bipolar II disorder and learning to understand what it means for him, including the hypomanic states that come along with it. Be sure and check out his blog, The3inMe.ga , as he writes weekly about his journey of understanding and healing, both past and present. John's message is one of vulnerable insight... an expression of hope, a declaration of love and a celebration of a life reclaimed. Ultimately, it’s my letter to my son, my apology and my promise. You can follow John on Twitter @Zelandroid009 If you haven't done so yet, please consider subscribing to the podcast, to get notified when I release new episodes each week! I'd sure be stoked to have you on this journey of inspiring others with the power of sharing their stories. -Matthew Pappas, CLC, CPNLP All conversation and information exchanged during participation the Beyond Your Past Podcast, on BeyondYourPast.com, and BeyondYourPastRadio.com is intended for educational and informational purposes only.
