It was a pleasure to welcome Willow (Vocals/Bass) and Luke (Drums) of Tech Death/Thrash band Aesect onto the show. The band have released three absolutely face melting singles so far with Willow stepping forward to take over vocal duties. I was really looking forward to discussing that brilliant transformation as a front man with Willow along with the thought process that went into the videos to match up with the singles. One of which has already been flagged by YouTube as being too extreme. We cover plenty of topics on this great catch-up with Aesect as the lads prep for the release of a new album and a look to book a series of gigs around the country. Nightmarer is a pretty young band compared to some of the projects and people we have on here regularly, think of Dirk Serries or Mike Watt, but the international band spread out across two continents and roughly 5,000 miles. Nevertheless, Nightmarer have released some pretty good album and their last one, Deformity Adrift (check out our review here) is a sensational lesson in how good dissonant Tech-Death can be. Reason enough for us to sit down and chat with Simon, the mastermind behind the project! Enjoy! Whenever people are firstly confronted with this kind of music, most of them are being pushed away by the dissonance - but after some time and spinning some of the records associated with the genre, some might get a knack for it. Simon, who also runs the highly successful label (Total Dissonance Worship) and who started a pretty well-known Spotify playlist a few years ago, seems to be one of the most relaxed dudes I have ever met, but one can also feel how much time, love and energy he is putting into all of his projects! We were fortunate to talk about all of that, about how he moved from Tampa to the Pacific Northwest and much more. Enjoy the conversation! If you want to support VeilofSound, there are two ways: First of all - be a friend, tell a friend! Spread the word about our work. Second possibilty: Support us on Patreon and enjoy our interviews two days ahead of everyone else! (Picture by: Paul A Ouzounov)

We admit that, in all our geographic music spelunking, we haven't scaled many of the mountains offered by Russian noisemakers. So, if we say that “Hieronymus Bosch is our favorite Russian band,” it's true, but it's also based on a slight bit of ignorance. If we say that “Hieronymus Bosch is our favorite Dutch artist of the late 1400s/early 1500s,” we can rest easy knowing that will probably hold for the rest of our lives. But c'mon, we think H.B., the band, are outstanding!!! Show us a Russian band that's better. Bet you can't. Here, we survey their output, from early demo emanations to their final album, the great Equivoke, of 2008. Note I: Please consider donating if you listen to Radical Research often: https://www.paypal.me/rrpodcast We also have a webstore where you can find shirts, CDs, and books, many of them recently restocked: http://radicalresearch.org/shop/ Music cited in order of appearance: “Near Death Experience” (Petra Scandali demo, 1994) “The Apogee” (The Human Abstract, 1995) “Mental Perfection” (The Human Abstract, 1995) “The Gardens of Earthly Delights” (The Human Abstract, 1995) “Interference” (Artificial Emotions, 2005) “Escape from Primitivity” (Artificial Emotions, 2005) “Heartbeat Seismology” (Artificial Emotions, 2005) “Zero on a Dice” (Equivoke, 2008) “Monad Hecatomb” (Equivoke, 2008) “Tracer Bullet Falling Star” (Equivoke, 2008) Radical Research is a conversation about the inner- and outer-reaches of rock and metal music. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience. Likewise, we believe that tangible music formats help provide the richest, most rewarding immersions and that music, artwork, and song titles cooperate to produce a singular effect on the listener. Great music is worth more than we ever pay for it.

Myself and Danielle had a brilliant chat with Avi, Killian & Sean guitarists of The Sluagh! The mystique of the band considering they all wear masks along with the ferocity of the music had us intrigued. The Sluagh or Sluagh na marbh ('host of the dead'), were the hosts of the unforgiven dead in Irish and Scottish folklore. The Sluagh have released two studio albums as part of one album cycle, titled ‘Enivid Creatures'. The second album ‘Enivid Creatures 2' is entirely instrumental and the lads explain their reasons for that and working with Micheal Richards of Trackmix Studios along with Michael La Viola at MLV studios. There was significant experimentation at the onset of writing both albums, drawing inspiration from both classical composers, while also strongly influenced by technical and progressive metal bands. It's an exciting time to chat with The Sluagh considering what they have planned for the next few months so I hope you enjoy the episode and please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell Youtube channel. They've always known that to be a tech death band that matters, the songs actually have to be good and catchy and deeper than just what's on the surface. Never has this been more the case than on their eighth full length Divine Council (Prosthetic Records and EVP Recordings). This is a nine track megalodon with teeth big enough to eat a continent and songs that are insanely good all based around an epic storyline with wicked good songwriting, quite possibly their best yet. Time sure does fly but don't worry - the episode opens with what everyone was listening to for September, except for Hera, who talks about an album back in May.  That's how we roll, folks!  Then it's onto current matters with Anton reaching for Gloire Éternelle by First Fragment (Unique Leader).  It's an interesting choice for the team, with staunch tech death advocates on one side of the house and folks that...let's say lean toward the polar opposite in terms of musical tastes.  And yet, there's something undeniable about the way First Fragment blend so many different styles into their unique brand of music.  Of course it helps immensely when you have people like Phil Tougas and Dominic Lapointe bringing the heat in at a nuclear level.  Unique Leader is no stranger to putting out great technical death metal, but in First Fragment we have something that colors outsides those lines and yet stands as a champion of what the label and genre have to offer. All that and - surprising no one - a lengthy segment about some of the other great music that came out in October (though no mention of Mastodon...something we'll rectify for year, end ;-)) including fellow tech death nerds Archspire who released their mammoth second album Bleed the Future, Monolord's latest Your Time to Shine, and the death doom glory of Foreverglad by Worm.   Deep waters ahead so dive in and join the crew!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Now, they've paired with Vox and Hops Brewtal North America and Overhop for a stout beer named closely after one of their songs. Our main man on the mic, Buke, chats with Simon Girard about this new beer venture and how it all came about as well as the whys of picking a coffee stout to be their maiden voyage into the beer market. They also cover technical death metal in general, band and personal musical history and how Simon's Grandfather made a huge impact on him, the explosion of craft breweries in Montréal as well as stateside, some of Simon's favorite beers and favorite death metal, and how they continue to experiment with tech death without crossing the line of alienating fans. At war with no enemy But the dearth of our will Far too late to wake from this doubt Intransigent in the face of the end Banished to a fate worse than death No worth remains of this condemned existence Soon to be annulled Transpire, from order to chaos The messiah of alienation Deliver us to these ends we have dreamt Você tem alguma pergunta, sugestão, crítica, correção, elogio ou qualquer outra observação? We're back, and in (almost) trio format! Think of it as Rush when they were a blues band, or like a bunch of folks with no idea what they're doing but enthusiastic about it anyway, the Album of the Month series keeps on a-rolling, with Allegaeon taking the honors thanks to their unbridled guitar-wheedling fury that is Apoptosis - our Album of the Month selection for April 2019! Charles has the pick this month, and he takes Chris and Vincent on a wild ride through the twisted progressive tech death that is the fifth offering from Allegaeon. Charles loves the 20-ideas-a-minute riffage, Chris has a hard time getting past the first song, and Vincent? Well, let's just say this isn't in his wheelhouse! All that plus a ghostly visit from beyond the ether courtesy of our Scholar of the First Sin Hera, who has her own strong (re: explicit) views on the album. Will she like it? Welcome to this weeks bonus episode of the podcast! My guest this week was Paul Ryan, guitar player that formed Kansas based Tech-Death band Origin. Paul came on the podcast to discuss the “Origins of Origin” (yes pun somewhat intended) He takes me through the early days of the band and the recordings that were Origin before it was even given that name. Currently Paul has re-recorded all the material from that time period, its called "Abiogenesis - A Coming Into Existence" on May 3rd worldwide via Agonia Records. Revisit the Origins of ORIGIN with the new single "Mind Asylum": the pre-ORIGIN era, never-before released track!  "Abiogenesis - A Coming Into Existence" was recorded and recreated from the original 1991-1996 era that preceded ORIGIN's official formation. The album features never-before released tracks, that laid foundations to one of America's top death metal purveyors. The tracks on "Abiogensis" were recreated to the best of his ability, by founding ORIGIN member & mastermind Paul Ryan, who recorded all instruments himself, between 2013 and 2018.
