There's a call for crew onboard foreign ships to be tested for Covid-19 before they dock in New Zealand ports. More than 90 workers at Tauranga port were originally stood down and told to get tested after spending time on the container ship Rio de La Plata which was carrying crew infected with Covid-19. The Rio crew members were eventually tested but only as of entry requirements for Napier - where the ship was headed next - those tests revealed 11 of those on board were positive. Captain Iain MacLeod is vice president of the Merchant Service Guild that represents pilots, deck officers and masters. He tells Lisa Owen "without hesitation test the lot of them" as it is done in Napier.

Yasmine (https://twitter.com/YasMohammedxx & https://www.yasminemohammed.com/) is a rights activist, advocating for the rights of women living within Islamic majority countries. Yasmine founded Free Hearts Free Minds (https://www.freeheartsfreeminds.com/). Her book, Unveiled, recalls her experiences growing up in a fundamentalist Islamic household & her arranged marriage to a member of Al-Qaeda. In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the two most important questions: “what’s real?” & “what matters?” Sentientism is "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." The video of our conversation is here on YouTube. We discuss: - Growing up in a fundamentalist Muslim household in Canada, attending Islamic school, being dressed in hijab & niqab - Being forced into marriage with an Al Quaeda member (now in prison in Egypt), considered "strong enough to control me" - Questioning things from a young age - The isolation of some religious communities even in secular states - Having a daughter & that being a catalyst for change - Escaping from husband & family - Going to university & learning about religions. The intoxication of being allowed to question - "I've been wasting my whole life terrified of a figment of the imagination of some ancient man" - "You spend so much of your life ruled by a fairy tale" - What's real? Believing in Islam - "It's embarrassing to admit I really did believe these things" - "You're indoctrinated from birth... & punished for questioning" - "You believe or you burn in hell" - "Every aspect of your life is laid out... Questioning is challenging god himself. So you must submit" - The life of Mohammed. The Quran as the word of god - "You don't think 'is this a good thing to do?' you think 'is this the correct thing to do?'" - What's real? Leaving Islam - Taking off the hijab & being told "you need to be killed before you leave Islam" by her mother, "I will be punished for eternity for having a daughter who is an infidel" - How a Jehovah's Witness mother might allow their child to die rather than allow a blood transfusion - Abraham's willingness to kill his own son - "Honour killings" (murders) - Religious compliance as above "ordinary morality" - Studying religion, seeing 9/11 happen & being horrified - Seeing a BBC reporter find Bin-Laden documents mentioning Yas' ex-husband's firm - "I needed to get my daughter out of that world before she started to think that was OK" - Hints of fundamentalism in the atheist movement - Appearing in Jay Shapiro's film "Islam & the future of tolerance" w/Sam Harris & Maajid Nawaz - "Meditation saved my life" - Humility & open-mindedness at the heart of naturalism - And more... At this moment of shock, sadness, and hope, it might be wise to reflect on the two most dangerous words in the human vocabulary: “us” and “them.” Last week, we received a dramatic reminder of this peril when our nation’s political divisions erupted into a spectacle of lawlessness on Capitol Hill. The impulse to choose sides is inherent in our species.

We're looking at the impact of using "loaded" words, such as labels that describe certain areas of Milwaukee, in our latest Beats Me . For example, "inner city" is a term that may ignite many thoughts. One dictionary definition says the inner city is "the usually older, poorer, and more densely populated central section of a city." A post on a travel site from 2017 advises people visiting Milwaukee to "stay away from certain areas in the inner city … including the northern part of the city." Beats Me: What Questions Do You Have For WUWM's Beat Reporters? It's this kind of language that has a member of our community calling for a stop in using the label "inner city." She says she's "always kind of resented that most of the labeling comes from the press and from suburbanites. And one of them that's particularly annoying is inner city because of the implications." Pat Mayes, an English professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, says there's referential meaning in language. "You

Israel returns to rebellion. They forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt. Even after witnessing God's unceasing care and provision and His strong hand, conquering their enemies, they decided to turn from Him. Since they rejected God, in those days Israel had no king. The result? Everyone did as each saw fit. Sin and chaos further darkened Israel's soul as they chose to serve the other peoples and their gods rather than the True God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Rejecting Him as King, God decided no longer to do for them what a king does. He did not go out before them in battle. He no longer drive out Israel's enemies from before them. What was their response to losing their King and His forces? Instead of continuing to conquer the peoples to gain their promised land, they started to merge themselves with peoples around them through intermarriage. "If You Can't Beat Them, Join Them"! This caused worse sinning and even further rebellion to reign over them as they served the others' gods. The beginning of Judges begins to chronicle this period in Israel's history as they continue to settle into the Land. Judges witnesses to Israel’s incomplete possession of the Land, their insufficient victory over evil, and their inconsistent manner of life. It lays open the history of God’s chosen as infected by great spiritual decline after such great spiritual and physical blessings by their God. More importantly, it shows the character of God Who, though His unending grace and faithfulness, pursues and restores and preserves a remnant of these people through even this. Join us in this lesson to learn more about this early time in the history of God's plan for His people, Israel. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/biblestudyweekly/message
We are neurologically hardwired to form bonds with concentric levels of friends, family, and community groups. But these groups are no longer surviving in our 21st century structure. Old, polarizing, fear-based, tribal norms of 'Us vs Them' are driving us apart as we pursue happiness and power. If we're going to live as healthy people and families, we have to claim a new kind of connection to the people who matter most.

In this podcast on Christmas Day at St Luke's Church Peckham Ian Mobsby explores the meaning of 'Emmanuel' as 'God with us'. Too often in Christianity the story of the birth of Jesus is heard as the story of the God 'for them'. This homily explores the generous and scandalous love of God, that seeks to come as a fragile human being for hope for all people. The paradox of a man coming from God who was truly God and truly human.
