It's Friday, and we're digging into the biggest stories of the week. First, local multimillionaire Kent Thiry is bankrolling a new campaign to reform Colorado's elections, and the signature-gathering kicked off this week. Will you give the DaVita founder's ideas your John Hancock? Plus, public transit riders face “mounting disruptions” as RTD struggles with outages and maintenance issues, according the Denver Post. Colorado Newsline senior reporter Chase Woodruff and our politics and green chile correspondent Justine Sandoval join producer Paul Karolyi to break down those stories and, of course, share our wins and fails of the week.  Confused about how ranked choice voting works? Check out the explainer we published in our newsletter this week.  Paul referenced Chase's excellent analysis of how effective Kent Thiry's last few election reforms and suggests this longread from The Lever on Kent Thiry's political ambitions. He also referenced CoLab's recent Voter Voices survey, and the John Oliver clip of Kent Thiry.  Justine talked about Sony Pictures buying Alamo Drafthouse and the labor organizing at local Live Nation venues. Paul highlighted this BusinessDen article about Indian restaurants. Chase talked about the new Denver museum and Manny Barella.  What do you think about ranked choice voting? Would you prefer voting that way? Or not? In this episode, Aparna shares her family's immigrant story. Her family opened the first Indian restaurant in Atlanta back in the 70s, which became a hub for South Asian communities in the South. Aparna takes us with her on the journey of what it meant to grow up being South Asian in the 70s (going to school as a young girl in the South and understanding her identity while at UGA.) Through her memories about her father's community organizing and her work today, Aparna highlights the importance of uplifting different forms of community advocacy like creating gathering spaces, preparing food, and organizing celebrations. Finally she talks about intergenerational healing in her family through the advocacy work she does today. Aparna has served as Executive Director of Raksha since 1998. She started her career as a victim advocate in the City of Atlanta and helped train and coordinate the 1996 Olympic Crisis Response team. Much of Aparna's work is focused on crime victimization and gender-based violence in immigrant communities and providing training on the needs of underserved communities. She has been faculty for Georgia's statewide Victim Assistance Academy since its inception in 2005. Over the years, she has been a part of creating organizations like Tapestri, Inc and International Women's House to meet the needs of immigrant and refugee survivors in Georgia. In 2023, She was listed in the 500 Most Influential Leaders in the 2023 Atlanta 500 list by Atlanta Magazine and serves on the board for two national organizations- The Asian Institute on Gender-Based Violence and South Asian Survivors, Allies, and Organizations Rising.

Indian food has been considered notoriously difficult to pair with wine, but we at the Wine Pair Podcast say pshaw to that! In this episode, we pair three wines with Indian food and discover that they work together pretty darn well! We cover what to look for in wines to pair with Indian food - hint, think about acidity, oak, and alcohol content - and we also discuss a little bit about why there may be this perception that Indian food is hard to pair with wine and how wine production is increasing in India. We pair wine with Butter Chicken, Tandoori Chicken Tikka, Dal Maharani, Garlic Naan, and Vegetable Samosas, food we ordered from Cedars restaurant in Seattle. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2021 Cottesbrook Gewurztraminer, 2020 San Gregorio Rosado, and 2018 Milton Park Shiraz.

Spanish Practices

Full transcript: Day 97 Of mousy women and men Saturday the weather is calm, the sun is shining, I have been doing some extreme weeding on the mountainside and managed to not fall down, the one time I did I thought it was best to relax and just let my body slide to a bit where I could cling on.  Our garden in Essex did not have the same extreme challenges, unless you count the incredible numbers of snails that ate their way through most of our English garden.   I have been spending some time reflecting, yesterday about the reasons why we came to Spain, today a reflection of things past.  Sometimes it is not healthy to keep reliving the past, much better to look forward to the future.   But often the future is fashioned by the past, all my mental health problems during the 1990s definitely changed me long-term as a person. I am pleased to say now I am a much more ‘mellow’ individual, although I am still capable of falling off my perch as my dear colleague Richard Dallyn used to say.   Over the years we have worked with hundreds, maybe thousands of people, some like us ordinary, some famous, some politicians’ others who might fall into the celebrity status, whatever that now means.   By 1997 I had already become an old lag at LBC and was often pressed into service to train the new young blood coming through the radio station. I remember one such day when I was training a new studio engineer, it was the two Julia’s show, Julia Sommerville the Presenter and Julia the Producer.   Julia the Producer decided that it was a bonus having me in the studio as it meant she could go sit out in the office and catch up on the paperwork that we all had to fill in to comply with the Broadcast regulations of the time.   I agreed and asked what was on the show, she said “A regular guest and some children’s author.”  “Fine,” I replied, I was quite happy that there wasn’t anything complicated about the show.   First up I left my charge and went up to collect the regular guest, who was been badged up by the very efficient reception staff at ITN.  Down we went to the basement, sorry, lower atrium of the large glass and steel building that is ITN studios. The guy I was training had been good, had engineered a junction into a commercial break and out again with no problems.   Then a call from reception, the next guest had arrived.  I left my charge once again to travel those sick making glass lifts of ITN and back to reception for the kiddies author, she was a mousy sort of woman and clearly suffering from nerves.  ‘Oh God, I thought, this one will be trouble.’  On the way down I checked her title and that she was the right guest,.. yes it does happen that you can put the wrong guest into the wrong studio.   A seem to remember an occasion when a guest for Geet Mala our Asian show wound up in a discussion about the future of railway transportation in the other studio, he gallantly discussed the advantages of off peak travel until it was discovered he had actually come to talk about a new Indian Restaurant opening in Brixton.   “I want to be called by my initials,” mousy woman piped up.  “Oh” I replied. “And what are they dear?” She told me, I thought that is seriously weird, so I put my foot down.  “The thing is, that nobody has ever heard of you, this is your first book,” “yes,” she replied.  “So, we are going to call you by your proper name, so listeners can relate to you.”   Mousy woman agreed, but it made her shake a little bit more.  I took her into the studio and Julia warmly greeted her, she said “My daughter read your book last night and loved it.”   We both had a copy of the book, whilst Mousy lady was telling us all how she was desperate and wrote the book in some café in Glasgow or Edinburgh or somewhere, I took a look at the book.  It was your usual fairly dismal children’s book offering.  The cover had a train on it with some spotty gormless urchin in glasses in front of it.   I flicked through the pages, it was mostly about magic, not my cup of tea at all.  Well the interview was over and the show runner, the poor kid who didn’t get paid but got to enjoy the ‘media experience’, had come back from his break, so I got him to dispatch Mousy Lady upstairs.   I thanked her for coming in, “Oh I see you have a copy of my new book,” she said, “would you like me to sign it for you?”   I answered “no” but I shall look forward to reading it later, she smiled and as the runner led her away I took the book between thumb and forefinger and threw “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling,” into the bin.   So that book became a life-changing book for me.  One I realised what a pratt I had been and how rude with it too. This poor woman had come to plug her book that she had worked long and hard to write and I dismissed it, without having the good grace to read the thing.  I did years later, and it is a cracking children’s book, every bit as good as the classics, which it has now become.   And two I constantly try to be a kinder person, I don’t always succeed, there is something inside of me that wants to be capricious, arch and downright rude, but I work hard to control it.   Maybe I was always destined to be the hapless journalist that dissed J.K. Rowling as an author, but it did teach me a lesson .. always try to be kind.

Larry Snow with the Secure Transportation and Executive Protection News for Friday, May 25th, 2018.   In Vehicle News From the Huffington Post Man Discovers Handgun Impaled In Front Bumper Of Car This brings new meaning to the term “gunning your engine.” A driver on Interstate 5 in Washington state's South Puget Sound area discovered something shocking when he stopped for gas: a handgun lodged barrel-first in the front bumper. The driver was heading down the freeway when a black object came flying through the air and hit his Honda, according to a tweet from state trooper Guy Gill, a spokesman for that district. There didn't seem to be serious damage, so the driver thought nothing of it and drove another 18 miles before stopping for gas, Gill said.   And from Autoblog 2020 Chevy Suburban spy shots reveal a shocking suspension situation Hot on the heels of the announcement that the Suburban RST will get the engine it should have had in the first place – the 6.2-liter V8 – we have spy shots of the next Suburban and a glimpse of a major change underneath. Firstly, make sure you check you Google My Business account for your Restaurant.  Incorrect information could be costing you thousands or tens of thousands of dollars! We talk about Jamie's Italian.  A restaurant chain over $100 million in debt with stories of poor food, poor team culture and poor experiences for diner's.  A Sydney Jamie's Italian was filmed using packet Gnocci when they advertise making their own pasta.  I am not a food lawyer, and technically, yes gnocchi is not pasta, but it highlights some of the concerns about the chain.  Jamie Oliver has done an amazing amount of work, particularly with school kids, to improve the diet of millions of people and to try and limit the power of food and drink manufacturers who create unhealthy food, but it looks like a licensing deal for his name.  Building scale and keeping the quality is very difficult, it comes done to leadership and procedures. We went to Lagnaa Bare Foot Dining.  This is a great Indian Restaurant in Singapore.  Chef Kaesavan has done an amazing job with the menu and the experience that he creates.  A lot of effort has gone into crafting the menu which does a great job of telling the story of his food. The experience is around the bare foot dining, which you need to ask for.  Off menu secret items and experiences are a great way of making people feel like they are in the in crowd and everyone wants to be in the in crowd!  The menu highlights child friendly food and has a heat rating for the hot dishes, with special events for those who love their food really hot. Bailey's Galub Jamun! Everyone should go there and check out how Chef Kaesavan has put together such a great experience. We went to Port Klang in Malaysia.  There was one restaurant on Google we liked the look of, tragically it had closed, so we wandered around looking for authentic Malay food.  There were a few restaurants, but none that were tourist friendly and had put in any work to attract walk ins.  We ended up having some epic Japanese food. Beard Papa - this is a chain that does the 'World's best cream puffs'.  These were a favourite with the kids (young and old) and would be the perfect addition to many restaurants desserts menu, looking for something tasting and I think probably high margin. Cow Dung Tarts in Malasia - they looked great, but I am not sure how keen I am to get more cow dung in my diet! :) For more information on this podcast, check out our show notes. It's ever so nearly Christmas, and we decided to spice up the festive season with an Indian Cookery special. If you ever find yourself struggling to buy a gift for the foodie in your life, as Sue Nelson points out, make sure you buy some cookery lessons at the Kent Cookery School rather than boring old socks. Sue caught up with the fantastic chef Hari Ghotra as she was giving an Indian Cooking demonstration, and we heard all of the action from a great event. Hari has quite the reputation, seeing as though she's a chef at the first Indian Restaurant to receive a Michelin Star restaurant. We even had the fruits of Sue's labour in the studio – much to the delight of Paul Andrews.

Nasir and Matt close out the week by talking about the Indian restaurant in New York City that was fined for trying to hire an Indian waiter or waitress. Full Podcast Transcript NASIR: All right. Welcome to our podcast where we cover business in the news and add our legal twist. My name is Nasir Pasha and I’m hungry. MATT: And I’m Matt Staub and I was actually going to comment; I could tell that you were because you, you know, it was straight business when you ran through that intro. It’s not going to get any easier for you because we’re talking about a restaurant. NASIR: And all these articles have nice pictures of Indian food on it. MATT: What are they called? Above the fold? NASIR: Yeah, like header image. I’m literally staring at that right now, by the way. MATT: What is that dish? NASIR: It looks like it’s a standard chicken tikka or masala or a buttered chicken masala. I’m not sure which. MATT: I was thinking masala but I wasn’t sure. I don’t know. It’s not pizza so I don’t know. NASIR: I’m no expert though. MATT: It’s either pizza or other for me. NASIR: I was looking for some pizza episodes for today. MATT: We’ll try to bring one in next week. Anyways, we have this Indian restaurant and it put up an ad for an experienced Indian waiter or waitress. Okay. It did this in October 2013. And then… NASIR: Wait. Wait, if you’re listening to this, pause and think about that and see if you can tell if there’s something wrong with that posting. By the way, it’s okay if you don’t get it because it’s not obvious. MATT: So, we have an Indian restaurant. It looks like a pretty authentic Indian restaurant looking for an experienced Indian waiter or waitress. As a result, the city’s Commission on Human Rights went after this restaurant and ended up, well, the fine was actually initially bigger. It got pushed down. It went after it to fine them because of, I guess, the discriminatory way that they put up the ad in terms of asking for an Indian waiter or waitress. Now, they did say waiter or waitress which actually is an issue I guess that could also be brought up. You can’t just put waitress; you have to put wait person. Like, actor or actress to me is kind of the same thing. I don’t really, you know… NASIR: Can a waitress be a waiter and a waiter not be a waitress? Kind of like an actor be an actress but an actress can’t be an actor or vice versa? MATT: People in the industry that are female in the acting industry call themselves “actors” and not “actresses.” Actresses, I guess, refers to a lesser. But isn’t it “best actress” in the Golden Globes and all that? NASIR: I thought so. Maybe there was a connotation to it that we’re not aware of? MATT: I don’t know. NASIR: I used to be an actor for about 26 years or so then I quit because it got too Hollywood for me. MATT: You were in all of those movies. NASIR: Yeah, all of those. We don’t need to name them though. MATT: Yeah, you were in all the Rocky movies. NASIR: That’s about the right age, right timing for 26 years. MATT: Well, let me finish this up here. So, they hit them with a fine. The law doesn’t allow ads that discriminate based on national origin. It ends up going to hearing. The funny part is – or one of the funny parts are – that, by the time that this hearing happened, it ended up being a year since the business had closed. So, the business wasn’t even open. It’s a pretty ridiculous premise to begin with and I guess the judge felt so bad that they reduced the fine from $7,500 to $5,000 – still saying that there was a discriminatory ad based on national origin even though it was an authentic Indian restaurant looking for an Indian waiter or waitress. NASIR: Yeah. Let’s first talk about this commission because this is something unique – the New York City’s Commission on Human Rights. That’s not something very typical but is specifically in New York City. I’m trying to think if there’s anything else equivalent.
