Canadian architect Raymond Moriyama died last week, leaving a legacy that includes the National War Museum and the Toronto Reference Library. Calls for a guaranteed basic income have strengthened during the pandemic, as proponents of the policy have argued that a basic income is a simple and effective way to reduce poverty. A new IRPP book, Basic Income and a Just Society: Policy Choices for Canada's Social Safety Net, analyzes the arguments advanced by proponents of a basic income. The authors, in turn, take a hard look at Canada's social safety net and propose an alternative path forward, which begins by asking: “How do we create a more just society together?” In this conversation, authors David Green, professor of economics at the University of British Columbia, and Gillian Pettit, research associate at University of Calgary's School of Public Policy, discuss the book's findings with Garima Talwar Kapoor, who was director of policy and research at Maytree at the time and is now director of policy research and insights at the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. Listen now for an engaging discussion on the book and on the future of Canadian social policy. This episode of the podcast is a recording of a panel discussion held at the book launch of Basic Income and a Just Society: Policy Choices for Canada's Social Safety Net. The event was moderated by IRPP vice president of research Rachel Samson and took place at the Toronto Reference Library on April 26, 2023.

For the third straight year, Smark & Friends proudly presents an episode in affiliation with Toronto Comic Arts Festival. The past two years they have put us in contact with great guests and this year is in that same spirit. Kat Simmers and Ryan Danny Owen are the authors and artists behind PASS ME BY, the graphic novel series telling a queer rural Canadian tragedy about a man facing dementia, and being confronted by a past he chose to forget. We talk at length about Pass Me By, including goals for the third book in the series and the inspiration behind it. We also discuss mural work, their own contributions to this year's TCAF, and of course, watch a little wrestling. Much like the main character of Kat & Danny's work, we're watching a match featuring a pair of legendary wrestlers who refuse to let wrestling pass them by(nailed it). Raymond Moriyama is one of the Canada's greatest treasures in architecture and design. To highlight TVO's premiere of "Magical Imperfection: The Life and Architecture of Raymond Moriyama," Nam Kiwanuka talks to filmmaker Scott Calbeck about why he thought the acclaimed designer of such iconic buildings as the Ontario Science Centre and the Toronto Reference Library would make such a compelling story.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Patient engagement is often loosely described as adhering to democratic principles even though, as we discussed in Dilemmas of Representation, there is rarely an election apparatus to support it. We thought it would be interesting to learn more about patient-led organizations that democratically elect who speaks and acts on their community's behalf. The Empowerment Council is a mental health service user advocacy organization funded by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. In this episode, we speak with Lucy Costa, Deputy Executive Director, to learn more about patient councils, to understand how democratic patient-led organizations decide what to advocate for, and to find out where advocacy and engagement intersect. This is a rich conversation that also explores the differences between advocacy and engagement. Lucy provides compelling testimony that there is pressure on patient councils to shift away from advocacy towards engagement, which, in her view, compromises their ability to push for system change. The Beguiling Books & Art is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2017, so Aaron welcomes its current owner Peter Birkemoe and outgoing shop manager and current Toronto Comic Art Festival artistic director Christopher Butcher. Together they trace the shop's history from its beginnings on Harbord Street to its current status as Toronto's destination for independent comics. We discuss how both Chris and Peter grew to mostly detest mainstream superhero comics in favour of the more intellectual and independent fare, before discussing the evolution of the Toronto Comics Art Festival from a small comic convention in the Honest Ed's store parking lot to a showcase of comic art from around the world at the Toronto Reference Library. This conversation finds The Beguiling in a state of transition, as they just moved from their long time location in Toronto's Mirvish Village to a new location on College Street. If that weren't enough, Chris is leaving his post as store manager to become Viz Media's man in Canada. Needless to say, there's lots to talk about. Subscribe (iTunes)Subscribe (Stitcher) We learn about learning, as we discuss game literacy, broken games and the world of theatre Built to Play learns about learning in our 50th episode. We don't know how we did it, except through willful ignorance of the heavenly signs and our friends and family. At this rate, Built to Play will never die, although we offer no guarantees. People often forget about game literacy, like this article did in the previous paragraph. Once you know how to read or write, the expectation is that's the norm. How quickly we forget that near 100 per cent literacy is a recent phenomenon, and only then became fundamental part of our societies. When we run into people who are lacking these skills it can be shocking, and the first arrogant impulse is to blame it on their own lack of interest. It's equally surprising when we see someone who's never used an Xbox controller, or is intimidated by the sheer number of keys on a keyboard. Even between cultures, there's been some confusion. Just as the Japanese read right to left, for them bottom-most face button means cancel, while in North America it means accept. While not entirely detrimental, it's worth noting that even experienced players run into the limits of their literacy, if only to justify why some of us had such a hard time playing Japanese RPGs. As games and technology become a bigger part of how we express ourselves, it's important to remember that not everyone grew up with a Super Nintendo, and the annual blockbusters, which focus on action and destruction, aren't universally appealing to all people. Some people aren't literate in games not because games aren't suited to them or because they aren't interested in them, but because games can be scary. They're active experiences, and so they need some level of introduction. Without that, games are just graphics on a screen and a gamepad filled with 10 plus buttons which could feasibly do anything. So this time, we're talking about game literacy with Sagan Yee and her Game Curious program, before discussing ways games can approach more people through performance. Then Jon Remedios tells us about his learning process in designing his own game. Here are our show notes: Sagan Yee tells us about the Game Curious program she ran in the Toronto Reference Library, plans for the future, and why games are stigmatised. Special thanks to Al Donato, Cheryl Clarke, Amelia Nelson, and Amala Johnson. This segment starts 0:40 into the show. Then in the news, we discuss the end of the G4 television channel, thehacking of the 3DS, and why Assassin's Creed Unity, Halo Master Chief Collection, and DriveClub are so glitched out messes. **The news kicks in at 12:50. ** Deirdre "Squinky" Kiai tells us about Coffee: A Misunderstanding, which merges the mediums of game and performance closer than ever before. Hear Squinky explain who's the player when humans are both the instigators and the avatars around 34:00. Jon Remediosexplains the progress he's made on his local multiplayer party game, theShoot Shoot Mega Pack, and how he's changed his process over the last four months. We talked to him back at Gamercamp in October, and before that in May at the Bit Bazaar. Hear Jon discuss his work-life balance and the future of local multiplayer at 42:55.
