Gold is back in the headlines, but should it be in your portfolio? Don and Tom take a fresh (and frequently hilarious) look at the shiny metal that never seems to deliver. From Fort Knox to Costco's gold bar rush, they trace gold's lackluster long-term returns and its overhyped reputation as a hedge. They break down why physical gold fails as an investment, why GLD is better (but still meh), and why long-term investors might already have enough exposure through diversified funds. The major averages are set to end the week higher despite a whirlwind week of tariffs, inflation, and Musk-driven drama. But President Trump's rhetoric around defense spending is spooking that sector. And Intel is on pace for its best week since 2000 on rumors of a tie-up with Taiwan Semi. We'll cut through the noise with Bernstein's Stacy Rasgon.
Taiwan Semiconductor $TSM, the world's largest chipmaking foundry, today just issued the largest CapEx forecast of its company's history.Does this mean the chip industry is finally escaping from its cyclical lows, and is ready for a rebound in 2025? TSMC's 4Q 2024 results showcased a 38% year-over-year increase in revenue and a 57% increase in earnings. Those were good numbers. But there might be even better news on the horizon. Management just approved a 2025 capital budget of between $38 billion and $42 billion. 70% of that is dedicated to "advanced technology production" -- i.e. building new fabs to manufacture the cutting-edge chips demanded by AI. This aggressive CapEx forecast is good news for TSMC and also for the entire semiconductor industry. The company will be spending that 2025 budget on equipment vendors such as $ASML, Applied Materials $AMAT, and Axcelis Technologies $ACLS and also on boatload of supporting functions. Meanwhile, creative innovations are also unlocking new opportunities. Taiwan Semi is transitioning the fundamental architecture of its transistors from FinFET to gate-all-around. It's updating the foundation its entire house is built on; changing the physical design of the smallest building blocks of its circuits to support more efficient and powerful processors. The next few years will be an exciting time for this industry. The semiconductor renaissance looks well-primed to begin a new chapter. One lesson from Alphabet earnings that we can expect from all megacaps this season: it's not cheap to be a hyperscaler in the age of AI. The stock market rally had a strong week, with the Nasdaq hitting a record high and small caps moving back above recent highs. That offered buying opportunities for leaders such as Taiwan Semi, but the Nasdaq is already extended again. Tidewater raced higher on earnings and oil prices, while Confluent is setting up. Investors need to be patient and nimble.

The Nasdaq outperformed even as bond yields and the U.S. dollar rose again. But breadth was suspect again, with advancers only having a slight edge over decliners on both exchanges. The major indexes had a quiet, half-day session after Thanksgiving, but finished with modest weekly gains, extending the strong gains this month. Novo Nordisk broke out of a new base on plans to bring weight-loss Wegovy to Japan and other new markets early next year. Taiwan Semiconductor is setting up with First Citizens Bancshares also just below a buy point.
After Thursday's retreat, the market rally looked like it was ready to pause. But bulls want to run. The major indexes roared back Friday to above October highs. More leading stocks flashed buy signals, with Taiwan Semiconductor sales fueling chips. MercadoLibre is setting up after its earnings gap while General Electric is right around buy points.
In this video, we discuss the latest earnings reports from Tesla (TSLA), Lam Research (LRCX), and Taiwan Semi (TSM), and what they mean for a possible end-of-year stock rally. Tesla's Q3 2023 earnings weren't great, with revenue and deliveries below expectations. The EV price war is hurting, and even Elon Musk said Cybertruck production is going to hurt. However, the company is still on track to produce 1.8 million vehicles in 2023, and is making progress on its 4680 battery cell production and new factories in Berlin and Texas. Did Tesla really “dig its own grave” as Musk quipped? Lam Research is expected to recover in 2024, but profit margins could flatline as the company invests in new chip developments. We think LRCX is a moderate buy, and perhaps a better bet on the memory chip market than Micron, given its profitable, repurchasing stock, and pays a 1.3% a year dividend yield. But investors may need to endure some hurdles. TSM's CEO sees the return to industry growth in Q4 2023, driven by the continued strong ramp of its 3-nanometer technology. However, inventory digestion is expected to continue due to the persistent weaker overall macroeconomic conditions, slow demand recovery in China, and ongoing weakness in PC and smartphone sales. Is it time to buy the world's largest and most advanced chip manufacturer? Overall, we are cautiously optimistic about the end-of-year stock rally, in spite of surging interest rates. Tesla, Lam Research, and Taiwan Semi are all well-positioned to benefit from the long-term growth of the semiconductor industry. However, investors should be aware of the potential risks, and invest accordingly. Tune in for this important episode of Chip Stock Investor! Nvidia stock is surging today and nearing a trillion dollar valuation, driven by spiking demand for its AI GPUs. But there may be other ways to play that boom. Computers use computer chips. Cars & Trucks have 30-100 microprocessors in them. 18 wheelers that deliver all of our goods use computer chips. Airplanes use lots of computer chips. So do satellite communications & FAA radar systems. Coffee makers & calculators, & TV's and tv clickers use chips. Radios use chips. Ovens & stoves & dishwashers, dryers and washing machines all use chips. Every factory that makes the stuff we buy uses a multitude of computer chips. Power tools use chips. Gasoline pumps use chips. Cash registers use chips. I guarantee you that your bank uses computer chips. And how about your doctor and hospital?
