I first met Mauricio Alvarez at a Next Generation Leadership retreat around 2013. I was impressed then and I continue to be impressed by how God has led him and used him. From his native Uruguay to the US for ministry and mission to business as a new thing from God in the world of mission, Mauricio has listened to the Lord and take each step as it's been made known. Today, Maricio lives and works in Spain as the founder of a heavy equipment distributor with customers around the world and as a member of the leadership team of Open Network, focused on the Latin world.Mauricio encourages us and challenges us with this story. He and his wife serve the community in which they live through business, education, church planting all while serving the Spanish and Portuguese speaking populations of many countries. Listen to his story and enjoy what God is doing through this humble brother. Mauricio has a message for the emerging BAM movement in other countries and reminds all of us that BAM is a journey and a process, not a destination or achievement. For more information, visit B4TNext.com If you've enjoyed the Business as Mission podcast, please follow us so you won't miss any episodes and give us a rating wherever you listen. This framework reveals how truly effective leadership transcends quarterly targets and focuses instead on lasting impact, full humanity, and meaningful transformation.• Leaders should be change makers who catalyze transformation, not just maintain status quo• Thinking of yourself as a "leader as ancestor" means considering what legacy you'll leave for future generations• Embracing "leader as human" means recognizing our bodies, emotions, and values as assets, not liabilities• Four universal leadership traits—wisdom, integrity, bravery, and kindness—have been valued across all cultures and time periods• Systemic kindness creates ripple effects throughout organizations when leaders prioritize human impact• Technology evolution shapes leadership styles, from the industrial revolution to today's AI revolution• Tomorrow's leaders must understand technology while maintaining human-centered approaches• Governance of creativity will become an essential leadership skill as AI capabilities expandLearn more about Sam on LinkedIn.BelemLeaders–Your organization's trusted partner for leader and team development. Send us a textIn this episode, Dr. Herbert Viars shares on the importance of raising up the next generation of leadership and how they can fulfill their destiny.  Eph. 4:7 CEB: God has given his grace to each one of us measured out by the gift that is given by Christ.  One of the core undertakings in his church is to develop any leader candidate that presents themselves, and to help them discover and walk out their destiny and God's plan and purpose for their lives.  Eph. 4:11-13 NLT: Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.  Our duty, as outlined in Scripture, is to inspire, develop, nurture and empower God's people to fulfill His purpose, and to edify, build up and uplift the Body of Christ.  With our gifting and calling, God has given us the grace and anointing to fulfill it. We have everything necessary to fulfill our destiny and our calling, including raising the next generation by training, developing and equipping God's people to effectively do the work of the ministry and strengthen the Body of Christ.  We focus on three areas in nurturing and developing new leaders:  #1 We help them discover their unique calling and role in the Body of Christ.#2 We lead by example and show them how to effectively operate in their calling. #3 We inspire them to pursue their calling with a spirit of excellence.  The most crucial aspect is having the individual candidate understand that they have a very specific, unique place of service and specific calling in the Body of Christ. It could be five-fold ministry, ministry of helps, or serving on a team, ...  As they are attempting to identify their calling, we emphasize to them that this is a process. It requires patience and commitment on their part. It is also important that they understand that they are not deciding their destiny and calling but discovering it.  In this podcast, Dr. Viars shares key questions for the potential leadership candidate to answer. These questions will help to lead and guide them in discovering their place and calling in the Body of Christ.  This episode will provide you with insights and ideas on how to raise up, develop and train the next generation of leadership in the Kingdom of God.

This week: What NOT to do and say when prospecting customers on social media. From Bruce's LinkedIN post on 3/12/21: When asking to connect with me, I'm less likely to accept if: 1. It's accompanied by a note wishing me and my family well as if we've met or are old friends. - Remember when we did most things in person? You didn't start most conversations with "I hope you and your family are staying safe." 2. It's accompanied immediately by a message asking how I am doing, with nothing else in the message. 3. Your request is attached to a message asking me to visit your website or buy your product. If we connect, I get very suspicious when... 1. 5 seconds later I get a 4 paragraph email of your services, a pdf attachment, and a request to chat. 2. 3 other people from your company connect with the exact same message you sent. 3. You immediately ask me to jump on an intro call to "see how we can help each other". If I did this, I'd spend all day every day on such calls. When prospecting to the C suite... Send a personal message that you actually wrote (not your marketing dept), and show that you actually took the time to understand what I and my company do. He is a co-Director of the Next Generation Leadership Academy at the College and a co-director of the UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE). Justin works directly with schools and school leaders to reform the systems that support the learner experience in school. STEAM Academy High School Byproduct of Next Generation Leadership Academy. Original mission to smooth the transition to higher education. So many involved in creating what that high school should be. 4 separate dual credit partnerships. Paired relationship back to just Bluegrass community college. Designing a high school from scratch is awesome. Semester model, Canvas LMS Lots of iterations, and still evolving, Didn’t really want early graduation, but it started happening In the early years, it was leader as designer. Try an idea 3 times. If we weren’t satisfied then we would abandon it. A lot of those ideas came from me, the ivory tower guy. Everybody has an opinion about what the school should be! We became gatekeepers of ideas. That brought a lot more confusion into the space, and so we abandoned it. There had to be something that made us feel like it could be great. Second time, it couldn’t be worse. Third time: Distinctly better. That first year was pretty abysmal. The kids didn’t mind the chaos because it was equal to what they experienced in the regular school. Bias toward equity. When you have a bias toward equity, you are always on the right ethical side of that choice. Core equity practice to not do credit recovery online only. Tina Stephenson, Chris Flores, and Eric Ridd Can we do this model for all kids? We abandoned the idea if it only worked for part of our kids. We focused on models that built opportunity after opportunity for kids. Some kids just need more time. We’re trying to buy them time. Authentic relationships with our community. You don’t just call yourself a PBL school, you have to learn that. We gained trust in our community. Our students accessed the whole of what Lexington felt like. Things that took iteration. Complete failure on Standards Based Grading. How to work well with higher ed. Higher ed can be flexible. The mentality about how they approach their perspectives is very different. When working with Colleges on dual credit, come with a model and concept to someone at the provost level or above. Project Moonshot - New approach to dual credit, focus on collaborative teaching. Adding two adults to students - one from high school, and one from the University. Only high schools that are willing to participate in the network get the dual credit in the schools. Progressive, constructivist education. Push is to change high school. Help kids make the next step sooner and smoother. Your future earning potential is deeply tied to what you accomplished after high school. Broadly define college as a step after high school and not sole as the 4 year liberal arts degree. In wrapping up the series, I have three conversations to share. The first is with Mrs. Titi Akisanya. A highly experienced coach and recently outgoing President of the International Coaching Federation in Nigeria. We discuss gaslighting. Yes. Gaslighting from marketers and advertisers and how this isn't a positive coping strategy. We share what some positive strategies might be for easing (back) into life through COVID 19 and post lockdown. "Never let a good crisis go to waste". There are opportunities to be had, even in the midst of economic and physical lockdown. PS: there's a reason why this episode was special to me. Listen to find out. https://www.buzzsprout.com/988609/4471658-a-coach-s-approach-to-re-entry-post-covid-19-lockdown.mp3?blob_id=17532521&download=trueThe second was a follow-up conversation with Roy Gluckman about COVID 19. It seems like forever ago we had this conversation. This is how I know time is different right now. We discuss what Diversity and Inclusion need from HR and Business leaders as we ease back into the workplace. "Being privileged is not always the same as feeling privileged". An important concept to contend with as we become more awake to issues of systemic racism. Listen here. https://www.buzzsprout.com/988609/4475663-what-could-inclusion-mean-for-orgs-as-lockdown-is-eased.mp3?blob_id=17557697&download=trueThe third is with Ralf Schneider. Ralf and I asked ourselves what the questions leaders need to consider in moving from the "I" and operating and an obsession on self-achievement, to the "WE" and collaborative achievement. We believe this is what relational leadership requires and this is what Next Generation Leadership is about. There is inside work and outside work that leaders need to do to innovate and not just improvise through COVID 19. Thinking through what questions to ask is probably one of their most important tasks. https://www.buzzsprout.com/988609/4606370-leadership-post-covid-lockdown-moving-from-i-to-we-and-other-questions.mp3?blob_id=18175427&download=true

As the world stabilizes from a public health perspective, curves flatten, and restrictions are eased, what will change, and what will be the same? A magician's question perhaps? If we assume that in a more stable post lockdown world, employees and other stakeholders will increasingly demand spaces that allow for more human, whole-person engagement, what is the leader's work in creating this? How do leaders prepare and support their organizations in preparing for this? How do we create better businesses that are more resilient and outlast crisis? We've generally become better at holding cooperation and collaboration. Are we at the same time limited by our mono focus on efficiency, optimization, or whatever an organization's performance holy grail is? To date, our successes have largely come at the expense of spaces for innovation, courage, and more flexible, sustainable processes, systems, and structures. Dr. Esau McCaulley is the author of Sharing in the Son's Inheritance: Davidic Messianism and Paul's Worldwide Interpretation of the Abrahamic Land Promise in Galatians, published in 2017 by T&T Clark. Esau serves as assistant professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. Further, he is an ordained priest in the Anglican Church of North America, for which he serves as director of Next Generation Leadership. In this work, McCaulley examines the nature of land, prophesy, and Jewish/Christian understandings of Messianic fulfillment. Using a historical approach by exploring Hebraic redemptive figures (such as King David), McCaulley exegetes pseudepigraphal texts, including Psalm of Solomon, 1 Maccabees, and others to determine various interpretations and understandings of fulfilled covenantal promises. These ancient interpretations serve as the backdrop for the Dead Sea Scroll texts, which may be argued to have been indicative of streams of theology which may have informed the apostle Paul. The second half of the book covers the Pauline theology of inheritance as described in the New Testament epistle to the Galatians, involving a detailed, verse-by-verse analysis and commentary. To conclude, McCaulley provides pastoral application by examining the ramifications of an egalitarian and universal eschatological inheritance. Will Sipling is a fellow of the Department of Catholic Studies and the Thomas J. Murphy Institute for Catholic Thought, Law, and Public Policy at the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota). Aired 10/28/08 The economy is in crisis. Unemployment is rising. Families are hurting. Despite recent drops in oil prices, the days of cheap gas and oil are gone forever. Climate change calls for massive changes in the way we supply and use energy. Today’s guest sees that these crises are connected and believes that together they present an enormous opportunity. VAN JONES, a young, dynamic, charismatic, optimistic, solutions-oriented African American with an Ivy League law degree – boy that sounds familiar -- is the founder and president of GREEN FOR ALL and author of THE GREEN COLLAR ECONOMY A new report just released by the U.S. Conference of Mayors says that we can create over 4 million green jobs if we aggressively shift away from traditional fossil fuels toward alternative energy and a significant improvement in energy efficiency. Another report just released by the Political Economy Research Institute and the Center for American Progress shows that the U.S. can create two million jobs over two years by investing $100 billion in a green economic recovery plan. The report also shows that this investment would create four times more jobs than spending the same amount of money within the oil industry. Green For All and its partners are proposing a Clean Energy Corps that includes a revolving loan fund to finance the ambitious retrofitting of the nation's building stock. An investment of less than $3 billion per year would provide financing and can be expected to create close to 120,000 green jobs a year and 600,000 over five years, while also lowering home heating and electricity bills for homeowners and small businesses. VAN JONES is the founder and president of GREEN FOR ALL, a national advocacy organization based in Oakland, California, committed to building an inclusive, green economy - strong enough to lift millions of people out of poverty. Van also co-founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and Color of Change, both committed to equal justice and opportunity for low-income people and people of color. Van has earned many honors, including the 1998 Reebok International Human Rights Award; the International Ashoka Fellowship; selection as a World Economic Forum “Young Global Leader;” the Rockefeller Foundation “Next Generation Leadership” Fellowship; and Campaign for America’s Future “Paul Wellstone Award 2008.” Van is a Senior Fellow with Center for American Progress. His first book, THE GREEN COLLAR ECONOMY is a New York Times best-seller.
