In the sixth episode of UCL School of Management's new podcast, host Vaughn Tan talks to Colin Fisher about his work on micromanagement and how to avoid it, especially in industries that require creativity. Colin explains how his experience as a professional musician helped shape his research focus, and the idea of how real-time interaction and improvisation in small groups lead us to new thoughts, new ways of behaving, and in some cases come up with something new that as individuals we wouldn't think of. Colin Fisher, associate professor at University College London's School of Management, conducted in-depth studies at several companies to determine how managers can effectively help employees who need assistance without demoralizing them. He found that the most effective helpers were the ones who clearly communicated their intentions, timed their interventions at points when people were most receptive, and figured out a rhythm of involvement that best suited their needs. He shares examples from different firms to illustrate what works and what doesn't, in person and online. Fisher is the coauthor of the HBR article "How to Help (Without Micromanaging)."

Colin joined the Iowa program as a manager in the fall of 2015. Colin comes to the show to provide an interesting perspective on Iowa football that this podcast hasn't seen before. The managers each year are a select, small group of guys that are crucial to the program. They are essentially, along with several staff members, the people who make everything run smooth. They set up and tear down practice, they prepare the locker room and equipment for game days. They transport equipment to the stadium, they drive guys back and forth from the hotel during camp, they assist with meals, and so much more. Colin is one of the truly good dudes that spent time as a manager at Iowa and it was a joy to talk about all of this on the podcast. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/washed-up-walkons/support

I went to a meeting and a podcast broke out. That's how this interview came about when I visited Colin Fisher at the mid-town Toronto offices of StableView Asset Management and, unexpectedly, he set up his podcast gear and we recorded a conversation primarily about a real estate techology company that he thinks has "fantastic" management, is undervalued and is going much higher. Colin also discusses his investment style, why technology companies with sub-$150 million market caps are his sweet spot, and the investment firm he's planning to bring public soon that he says will change the way small Canadian technology companies are financed.

capitalTRANCE #038 is here, chalk full with a star line up! Tom Swoon & Amba Shepherd start things up with Maor Levi's take on "Not Too Late". We waited quite awhile for this remix to come out and it is finally here! From Poland the young producer Tom Swoon has been in the spotlight since 2010. With his first official remix being Gareth Emery's "Tokyo" hes been on the rise ever since. Canada's very own Colin Fisher aka Soundprank stops in with his newest single "Animus". In his classic style he grabs our attention with a driving bass line and dreamy piano! Despite only producing for three years he has definitely made a name for himself in the EDM scene. Arguably one of EDM's greatest artists Eric Prydz has released a huge track under his alias Pryda! "Power Drive" ends this episode in classic Pryda style, minimal yet so energetic! Enjoy! Tracklist: 1. Tom Swoon & Amba Shepherd - Not Too Late [Maor Levi Remix] 2. Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock [Arty Rock-N-Rolla Mix] 3. Norin & Rad - Aldo [Original Mix] 4. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are hot stuff in the world of genre movies. The pair wrote the screenplays for THOR and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, as well as having written for the shows FRINGE, ANDROMEDA and the TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. Scott interviews these delightful chaps about their new YA novel COLIN FISCHER. The conversation also delves into the subtleties of writing fiction as opposed to writing screenplays, and what it’s like to be the sole focal point of a book marketing campaign as opposed to being one of many faces when it comes to promoting a movie. And wait … what’s this? Do we break some major news on their next scifi project? Why, yes … yes they do. You want to hear that part, especially if you hate bugs.
