CHAMPION. CHARISMA. CHARACTER. These are the qualities that make a badass. Jean-Claude Van Damme stretches and grunts his way through Double Team (1997). Jim and A.Ron examine this raucous, nonsensical, and strangely erotic movie. Between the timeshares, sexy bathtubs, and the “acting”, there's plenty of rip-roaring fun to enjoy. Growing up in the late 80's and early 90's, everyone was in love with Cannon and Carolco movies. When your mind thinks of 80's action movies, the first movies that come to mind is from one of those production companies. I met Ukrainian author and film critic Davyd Klimov after he reviewed my proof of concept Bishop's Day. His honest criticism of movies and love of cinema made me want to bring him on the pod and chat like true film nerds. He and I had a lot of things to talk about, so kick back and be prepared to get a lot of info on 80's action and more! When you're done with the pod, check out his book To Watch, or Not To Watch, which is filled with reviews that Klimov recommends and … doesn't.If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. I do free movie giveaways, mini movie reviews and more! Also, I decided to dabble in making my own slasher film entitled “Bishop's Day”. Check out the Instagram page for updates.

Slick your hair back and find your long lost twin as we high kick it into high gear with Jean-Claude Van Damme's Double Impact. Who is Randa and why has she been missing from our lives for so long? And why are so many of us (apart from Dayna) willing to overlook this movie's serious shortcomings, just because of JCVD's glorious glutes? You'll find few answers, but plenty of gushing and a little bit of ranting in this week's ep.
Mike Butler and Mike Field are once again joined by guest Russ Lyman on their limited special series "From Console to Screen" to discuss "Street Fighter: The Movie" starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia in his final role as the scene stealing M. Bison. Surely this film based on a fighting video game is good...right? RIGHT?!What's your favorite Street Fighter character? Let us know in the comments below!
Level Up the Nostalgia is in full effect as Evo and Gregg go full blockbuster with Episode 229! This week's rewind features everything from comic book carnage to TRL countdowns to Van Damme-style living room stunts. We talk:
His mainstream star might still be on the rise, but to die-hard action fans, Marko Zaror is already a legend. He stars alongside Scott Adkins in DIABLO, directed by his longtime friend and collaborator Ernesto Diaz Espinoza. An accomplished and disciplined martial artist, Zaror idolized Bruce Lee from a young age -- just like Jason, the main character of Cory Yuen's 1986 American debut, NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER.Then, Jordan has one (more) quick thing from the realm of action cinema; MEGAN 2.0?!DIABLO is in theaters and available to rent now on most major streaming platforms. ***With Jordan Crucchiola and Marko Zaror Feeling Seen is hosted by Jordan Crucchiola and is a production Maximum Fun.Need more Feeling Seen? Sudden Death movie review: Join host Scott and returning guest, film director Adam Stovall ("A Ghost Awaits"), as they dissect the 1995 Jean-Claude Van Damme action flick "Sudden Death," a blatant Die Hard knock-off set in a hockey arena. In this lively episode, Scott passionately defends the film's chaotic charm, while Adam and Craig unpack its flaws, from clunky plotting to over-the-top action. They all unite in praising Powers Boothe's magnetic villain, Joshua Foss, and unexpectedly dive into ice hockey history, exploring the Pittsburgh Penguins' legacy and the sport's cultural impact. Perfect for fans of 90s action movies, JCVD enthusiasts, or hockey lovers, this episode blends humor, critique, and surprising insights. Swole Cinema Episode 53 is here, and this week Ryan and Mark are stepping into the underground fight scene with Jean-Claude Van Damme in Lionheart! After tragedy strikes, Lyon Gaultier deserts the French Foreign Legion and enters brutal street fights to support his family—because when it comes to heart and honor, Van Damme doesn't hold back. This week, Dave, Rob, and Kurt (with a special guest) strap on their bandoliers and dive headfirst into the over-the-top, protein-shake-fueled madness of 1980s action movies—where subtlety was for side characters and every explosion was a valid plot device. This was the golden era when Arnold Schwarzenegger could wipe out an entire jungle cartel with just a grimace, Sylvester Stallone turned mumbling into an art form (while bench-pressing Cold War tensions), and Jean-Claude Van Damme split-kicked his way into our hearts—and sometimes into slow-motion for no reason. These were movies where bullets never ran out, henchmen arrived in unlimited waves, and the only thing more ripped than the heroes were their sleeves. The 80s taught us that world peace could be achieved with a machine gun and a killer one-liner. So join the crew as they salute the action gods, relive the chaos, and ask the important questions—like are we, now in 2025, too old for this sh**!! This week on Shat the Movies, we're kicking some serious butt with Street Fighter (1994)! Join us as we dive into the live-action adaptation of the iconic video game, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel Guile. It's a chaotic, campy, action-packed ride full of over-the-top performances, questionable fight scenes, and plenty of laughs. Whether you're a fan of the game or just love ‘90s action flicks, tune in for a hilarious deep dive into this cult classic! Plot SummaryIn the 1994 action film Street Fighter, directed by Steven E. de Souza and loosely based on the hit video game series, Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as Colonel Guile, the all-American military hero leading a multinational force to stop the evil warlord General M. Bison, played with over-the-top flair by Raul Julia in his final film role. Set in the fictional nation of Shadaloo, the movie follows Guile's mission to rescue hostages and bring down Bison's plans for world domination. Bison has kidnapped dozens of civilians and demands a massive ransom, threatening their lives. While Guile prepares for a full-scale assault, a tangled web of subplots unfolds: Chun-Li (Ming-Na Wen), a reporter with a personal vendetta against Bison, works undercover to get close to her enemy; meanwhile, hustlers Ryu (Byron Mann) and Ken (Damian Chapa) are caught between working with arms dealer Sagat (Wes Studi) and Guile's forces. Add to the mix Dhalsim, Blanka, Zangief, Cammy, E. Honda, Balrog, and Vega—many of whom are barely recognizable from their video game counterparts—and the film becomes a chaotic patchwork of characters and plot threads. Despite its wildly uneven tone, cheesy dialogue, and loose connection to its source material, Street Fighter has earned cult status thanks to its campy fun and Raul Julia's scene-stealing performance. His portrayal of Bison is operatic, charismatic, and quotable—offering the movie's most memorable moments. Join our podcast review as we revisit this infamous 90s video game adaptation, exploring whether its action, absurd charm, and unintentional comedy make it a guilty pleasure or just a first-round KO. There has been a lot of talk around Sinners. Good, bad, or ugly, everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Is it really the best movie of the young year? Is it grossly overrated? Something else entirely? Whatever the case, audiences are going out to see it in drovers. What is being overlooked by many is the biggest irony surrounding it.We spend a lot of time talking lovingly of the theater experience. It was a big part of growing up and still remains fun even as adults. So it sucks to hear when the CEO of Netflix says theaters are outdated. It is not so much his opinion that matters, but the fact that he actually has the power to make movie theaters obsolete.Which makes it all the better when someone like Rian Johnson talks about how he wants Knives Out 3 in as many movie theaters as possible for as long as it can. Since he has a deal with Netflix, we all know where the movie will eventually end up. The fact that he wants a run that is longer than a week or two is nice to hear. The detective noir is a genre that does not get the love it used to. A part of this may be due to burnout. The 1930s - 1950s saw a huge number of them released. Many of them are considered classics. There has not been a good one in quite a while so when one bills itself as a triumphant return, we were all in.Exaggeration is a part of marketing. We get that. But Dark My Light has no film noir elements, at all. There are exactly zero moments. Instead, it is a science fiction movie that wants to be about a character. The question is not why did they market as something it is not. It is not even whether what they ended up doing worked. The real question is did this movie even have a script?Karate tournament movies were all the rage back in the day. Jean-Claude Van Damme was able to build a career off of them while the legacy of The Karate Kid still lives on. We could not wait to see Absolute Dominion. Sure, the idea may be the flimsiest excuse ever to have a globe spanning battle for supremacy, but nostalgia is a powerful draw.Regrettably, Absolute Dominion lacks any of the charm of the movies from our childhood. It is way more confusing than it has to be, ignores its most interesting subplot, and lacks any of the tension these types of films need. We also try to figure out who Alex Winter owes money to. In this special (and slightly jet-lagged) episode, Dani and Giacomo record straight from Brussels, Belgium—and no, the podcast name Muscles by Brussels wasn't inspired by Jean-Claude Van Damme. They reflect on their European travels through Amsterdam, Heidelberg, and now Brussels, sharing real talk on what it's like to stay plant-based while abroad. They discuss the difference between travel for work vs. actual vacation, why they're not tracking macros on this trip, how they try to weave in fitness habits without stressing, and the subtle-but-important label differences between vegan and vegetarian foods across countries. Have you traveled as a vegan? Let us know your tips and stories—we'd love to hear them!✨ Helpful Links and Resources:
We're kicking off "Fighting VideoLAMES," a four-episode series covering cinematic adaptions of fighting video-games, with the first of two movies based on one of the most iconic, popular fighting games of all time: 1994's Street Fighter. With an all-star cast including Jean Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia (in his final onscreen appearance), produced by the very company that made the video game, and released while Street Fighter II mania was at a high, the movie seemed like a can't-miss proposition. And, to be fair, the movie was a financial success. But between an extra chaotic production and fan dissatisfaction over liberties taken with the story and characters of the game, the movie still quickly took on the reputation of an infamous cinematic disaster. The question is, is the movie truly an unwatchable mess, or is it actually the enjoyable camp classic its growing cult of fans and defenders over the years claim it to be? In the pantheon of great Van Damme action flicks from the 1980s and 90s, 'Hard Target' (1993) undoubtedly stands out as one of his best. As hunky Cajun ex-Marine, Chance Boudreaux, the mullet-wearing 'Muscles from Brussels' struts his more sensitive side while also exhibiting the sort of superhero antics that would put Schwarzenegger to shame, like firing a pistol while standing on a moving motorbike and - famously - punching a snake. He has his director to thank for one of his most iconic roles: John Woo, the 'heroic bloodshed' maestro fresh from his ballistic Hong Kong masterpiece, 'Hard Boiled' (1992), and determined to make an impact in his American directorial debut. The resulting concoction is pure Woo - a slow-motion bullet ballet of epic proportions which cemented his position as one of cinema's greatest directors of action. Joining me and 'Life of Action' author Mike Fury to discuss this milestone in movie mayhem is Christina Newland, lead film critic at the i Paper and a contributing editor to Empire Magazine. As three dedicated Jean-Claude Van Damme fans, we unpick the reasons why we think his appeal is more inclusive than that of his action contemporaries - people like Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal, and Chuck Norris - and the lasting legacy that John Woo has had on action cinema. This episode was recorded live at the Nova Cinema in Woking, UK, in November 2024 as part of the British Film Institute's Art of Action season. A huge thank you to the crew at the Nova Cinema and the people of Woking who attended the show, and the Independent Cinema Office and Film Hub South East for helping to organise the event.LINKSChristina Newland on Blue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/christinalefou.bsky.socialChristina Newland's website: https://www.christinanewland.co.uk/Christina Newland on Substack: https://substack.com/@christinanewlandSubscribe to 'Sisters Under the Mink' on Substack: https://christinanewland.substack.com/Buy 'She Found It at the Movies: Women writers on sex, desire and cinema': https://www.waterstones.com/book/she-found-it-at-the-movies/christina-newland/9781912157181'Act Like a Man: Jean-Claude Van Damme' by Christina Newland: https://mubi.com/en/notebook/posts/act-like-a-man-jean-claude-van-dammeBuy 'Hard Target' on 4K UHD from Kino Lorber: https://kinolorber.com/product/hard-target-4k-uhd 'Hard Target' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/HardTarget1993Jean-Claude Van Damme profile on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/VanDammeKFMGJean-Claude Van Damme on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jcvd/John Woo on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/john_woo_filmmaker/'John Woo's Next Film Is ‘A Half-Musical' With Sparks', Empire Magazine: https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/john-woo-half-musical-sparks-exclusive/'Celebrate Renowned Hong Kong Action Classics, Storytellers, And Film Icons With Shout! This week, I had the honor of speaking to Sahbunim Jamie Webster, who played himself (and the character of Great Wolf) in the mid 90s martial arts show, WMAC Masters. Sahbunim (abbreviated here as SBN) is the Korean term for master instructor at a martial arts school, and the Webster Martial Arts academies have been serving the Northern Alabama region since 1973, when SBN Jamie's father, opened the first martial arts school in the area. We had a great conversation about many topics - martial arts history, WMAC Masters, breaking, toy collecting and more, and it was long enough that for the sake of editing, I broke it into two episodes. I was in high school by the time WMAC Masters aired and had been doing martial arts for just a few years. Though I was a little beyond watching cartoons on weekend mornings by then, I do remember getting up to try to watch episodes of WMAC Masters, since they were one of the few sources of martial arts I could find on network television (unless there was the Chuck Norris or Van Damme movie or the odd kung fu film playing on this random Spanish language channel that had them sometimes). SBN Jamie was a Native American character on the show called Great Wolf, who, besides being a pretty swell martial artist and acrobat, was also a breakdancer. He did windmills on the show a number of times. I talked about how seeing him on the show was one of the reasons I wanted to learn how to do the move on a previous episode, so when I stumbled across his school contact info, I had to reach out to thank him. We get to talk all about mills and other acrobatics on this episode! If you have not see WMAC Masters, you can find all the episodes uploaded to Youtube here. They were never released on DVD, to my knowledge, so these are, I believe episodes that a kind soul likely taped off the TV and then digitized and eventually uploaded. You can learn more about SBN Jamie and his schools here:-The Webster Martial Arts Academy of Decatur-The Webster Martial Arts Academy of Madison-Instagram-Tiktok-YoutubeStay tuned for part 2 next week!∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack!Like what you see or hear? Nick welcomes film critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy to review several new movies, including "The Accountant 2," "The Shrouds," "Cheech and Chong's Last Movie," "The Legend of Ochi," and more. They also share insights and highlights from the upcoming Chicago Critics Film Festival at The Music Box Theater during the first week of May. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to discuss the highs and lows of video game adaptations in movies and TV, celebrate Andy Samberg's comedic brilliance in the underappreciated classic "Hot Rod," and tackle rumors about a possible "Bloodsport" remake—both firmly agreeing that Jean-Claude Van Damme is truly irreplaceable. [Ep 344]
Skynet AI 2029: James Cameron's The Terminator If you grew up in the 1980s, you were living in a decade that would be controlled by raunchy teen sex comedies (Porky's, My Tutor, Private Lessons), John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day Off), and the emergence of straight to video. However there was one genre that stood above all others and would forever alter the output of Hollywood. Action films had always been a part of Hollywood, however the 1980s would unleash the talents of Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis, as well as lesser box office talents such as Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme, and the continuing presence of 70s holdover, Chuck Norris. One name would stand above all others, however. Inhabiting the title role of the 1984 B-Movie, Low-Budget Classic, The Terminator, Director James Cameron would establish Austrian-born, seven-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger, as - possibly - the greatest Action-Star to ever grace the Big Screen. The Terminator would change cinema and introduce both actor and director as formidable and genre defining talents. This week Mr. Chavez & I dive into the world of Artificial Intelligence and discuss one of the greatest Science Fiction films ever made. What are the lessons we should have learned from Cameron's film? What did we miss? How far away are we from Skynet becoming self-aware? There's a whole lot to unpack and we're diving right into all of it. This was an exciting and wonderfully joyous trip back to the 80s and a film that greatly defined both our youths, the decade, and the evolving world of Cinema. Nick welcomes journalist, podcaster, and filmmaker Amy Guth to talk about her latest behind-the-scenes movie work, her illuminating trip to Berlin for a major film festival, what it's like to cover the news under the current administration, and why she's excited to start working on a creepy new TV series in Canada. Then, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to chat about the very subtle—but real—differences between Jason Statham and Jean-Claude Van Damme movies, the hypnotic appeal of Buc-ee's roadside stores, the many bizarre versions of “The Macarena,” and why it's impossible to move a couch without referencing Friends. [Ep 338]
In 1994 the Street Fighter name was riding high off the back of Street Fighter II, an arcade classic. This meant it was the perfect time to release a movie adaptation and who better to play the role of Guile than Jean-Claude Van Damme at the height of his fame. Much maligned at the time it's become somewhat of a cult classic despite being more GI Joe than Street Fighter. But at least some of the actors look like some of the video game characters. Plus it has Australia's own Kylie Minogue and an incredible performance from Raul Julia.
