TW: fertility/infertilityDr. Amy Walpole graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine, and completed her GP vocational training in 2007. She emigrated from Wales to Northland in 2018, working for a Māori health provider. She volunteers with Whangārei Riding for the Disabled and lives on a lifestyle block. Her lifestyle block includes three ponies, five alpacas, chickens, turkeys, a cat and a dog! Dr. Walpole joins us today to discuss a topic that can be painful for some of us - being childless by circumstance. In this episode, we discuss her journey from Wales to New Zealand/Aotearoa, and her journey from being a training surgical registrar to general practice. A trigger warning is in place as this episode discusses extensively the journey of being childless by circumstance, a situation that is familiar to a number of doctors due to our long training programs and stressful work environments. In this vulnerable episode, we discuss the journey through IVF, ICSI, the emotional and financial toll it took, and her recovery and healing from this journey. We talk about what was important in her support system to hold her up, which has included the solidarity she received from colleagues and friends. This episode may be challenging for many to hear. Please be kind to yourselves and the speaker if you are navigating this journey too. Sometimes known as the ‘Plant Power Doctor' because of her recent best selling book, ‘The Plant Power Doctor: a simple prescription for a healthier you,' Gemma Newman is a British medical doctor that educates the public on the need for holistic health, plant-based nutrition, and lifestyle medicine. After obtaining her degree in medicine from the University of Wales College of Medicine, she went on to gain additional qualifications in gynaecology and family planning, but worked in many specialities throughout her career before deciding on family practice. Due to her background, Gemma has a vast amount of knowledge and experience at her disposal that she tries to share with whoever will listen. Being a founding member and serving as an ambassador for ‘Plant Based Health Professionals UK' (PBHPUK), alongside her involvement with the ‘British Society of Lifestyle Medicine' (BSLM), Gemma has taken it upon herself to try and increase the awareness of the things that she preaches. Whether it's the general public or even other doctors who do not possess the same insights, Gemma regularly attends conferences, helps with training programmes, and makes appearances on podcasts and other forms of social media to help spread the message about the benefits of plant-based medicine. This episode of the ‘Strong Voice' podcast will begin with an introduction to Dr. Gemma Newman, the importance of her ideas, and what motivates her to do what she does. We then discuss the role that diet, in particular plant-based nutrition, plays in preventing and helping manage some of the common chronic diseases that we find in society today. Afterwards, we talk about the practicalities of a plant based diet, and cover questions like if it's still possible to have the same comfort foods or what the major differences are between plant-based whole foods and processed foods. Drawing on personal experience, we discuss the role that spirituality plays for our health and wellbeing, and how we define what it means to be spiritual, instead of the conventional understanding that is shaped by religion. As always, we hope you enjoy listening, and please let us know your thoughts on social media. Enjoy! The Prince of Wales College, Achimota School, opened in 1927 north of Accra in the Gold Coast (Ghana). Achimota was to be a ‘model' school—but a model of what, exactly? And for whom? Shoko Yamada's book 'Dignity of Labour' for African Leaders: The Formation of Education Policy in the British Colonial Office and Achimota School (Langaa RPCIG, 2018) delves into the multiple discourses and contested politics that resulted in Achimota. Her careful analysis pulls apart the different strands of American and British educational models that influenced Achimota, while also attending to the specificities of Gold Coast politics that shaped the school's creation. This episode features Dr Gemma Newman, a knowledgeable, caring and helpful UK General Practitioner, who practices lifestyle medicine based around a whole-food plant-based diet and the core belief that the body can naturally heal itself if it’s given the right conditions. Gemma is the sort of doctor we could all do with visiting no matter how healthy we feel. We can no doubt all improve our lifestyles, particularly with the growing evidence to support the ability of a plant-based lifestyle to prevent, reverse, or at least halt the progression of chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and cancer. And from my perspective as an Intensive Care doctor, the less chronic disease due to a healthier lifestyle, the the less likely you are to ever meet someone like me by becoming a patient in the ICU. Gemma, the Plant Power Doctor, can be found through her website, on Instagram (@plantpowerdoctor), on Twitter (@drgemgem) and on Facebook. She has a specialist interest in holistic health, plant based nutrition and lifestyle medicine, and in her practice has come to understand that body, mind and soul are not separate, and that it is only in addressing the root causes of stress and disconnection that we can truly heal, from the inside out. She has worked in medicine for 15 years and is the Senior Partner at a family medical practice where she has worked for 11 years. She studied at the University of Wales College of Medicine and has worked in many specialities as a doctor. Gemma had also gained additional qualifications in gynaecology, family planning and integrative medicine. She is passionate about the study of psychology and meditation, and is also a qualified Jikiden Reiki practitioner having studied this as well as Western style Reiki for the purposes of pain relief. Gemma is an advisory board member of Plant Based Health Professionals UK and has contributed content on the topic of Diabetes for the Winchester University Plant Based Nutrition Course. As a broadcaster and writer she has been featured on ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky News Sunrise. She has spoken on many podcasts including The Rich Roll Podcast and the Deliciously Ella podcast, and is regularly invited to teach other doctors and the general public via training programmes, podcasts and conferences about the benefits of plant-based nutrition. Ultimately she hopes her passionate for healing of mind, body and planet become contagious! This episode is full of information, inspiration, helpful advice and even a couple of powerful patient-related stories. In it Gemma discusses many topics including: How the plant-based lifestyle has changed her life, her family’s lives and her professional life Why she became a General Practitioner Her view that the body has a natural ability to heal itself How her husband inspired her to adopt a plant-based diet The very first patient she suggested try a plant-based diet Understanding the difference between a patient and a doctor’s agenda in a health consultation Some thoughts on seeking good lifestyle advice from your doctor Some of the good online sources of lifestyle information Working through the dietary confusion that seems to be everywhere Her view that a whole food plant-based diet is the best all-round diet Dealing with the varying quality and amount of evidence How we all respond well to engaging stories Another great story of a patient reversing a range of medical disorders and stopping his medications How putting on your “GLOVES” (an acronym for Gratitude, Love, Organic, Veggies, Exercise and Sleep) will help improve your health The benefit of journalling as a tool for gratitude Her own preference for transcendental meditation How she talks to patients about love The health value of eating organic vegetables and fruit How she individualises advice about exercise The benefits of blue light glasses and turning off our screens in the evening Her philosophy on the use of medications as a practicing doctor How antibiotics can affect our microbiome How alcohol might affect the microbiome by “sterilising" our gut How Gemma lives a regular week in her life Her admission that she knows she could do better with her sleep Gemma has a growing and well-deserved public profile, particularly because of her heavily science-based plant-based nutrition and healthy lifestyle advocacy. I loved talking with her. Please enjoy listening to Dr Gemma Newman. Live well, feel well, do well. “Stay positive. Make a change for yourself. Tell others about your change. Feel good and hopefully, the message will spread.”Gemma NewmanRecorded live during our recent Plantpower Italia retreat in Tuscany, I'm delighted to share a fun and highly informative conversation and audience Q&A with the delightful, whip-smart “Plant Power Doctor” herself.Gemma Newman, MD has worked in medicine for 15 years, the last decade serving as Senior Partner at a family medical practice in the U.K.. She studied at the University of Wales College of Medicine and has worked in many specialities as a doctor including elderly care, endocrinology, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, general surgery, urology, vascular surgery, rehabilitation medicine and General Practice. In recent years she has developed a specialist interest in plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine, serving as a Jikiden Reiki practitioner and advisory board member of Plant Based Health Professionals UK. On the daily, she provides evidence based nutrition, mental and physical health modalities, energetic healing and lifestyle advice to her patients, who have gained tremendous results using the power of their plate. As a broadcaster and writer she has been featured on numerous national press outlets including ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky News Sunrise. She is a regular contributor Glamour, Zest and Health magazines and has appeared in the feature film Vegan 2018.Gemma's journey to plant-based advocacy isn't rooted in ideology or moral compunction, but rather on hard science matched with self-experimentation.As a young doctor in a high-pressure environment, like many newly minted physicians she began neglecting her own health. Struggling with her weight, and having bought into the background hum of ‘cut the carbs', she adopted a low carb diet. Calorie counting ensued, combined with a modest daily exercise routine. It worked. Sort of. Dropping from a size 18 to a size 8, she was feeling pretty good about herself. Then she checked her blood profile to discover an elevated lipid profile, markers suggesting a tendency to heart disease. She shrugged off to genetics. Both her father and grandfather died relatively young of atherosclerosis. It's just something I was born with. Something I just have to live with.Nonetheless, she couldn't shake the feeling that perhaps there was something she could do to alter this seemingly immutable fate.Meanwhile, Gemma's husband Richard picked up a little book called Finding Ultra while training for the London Marathon. He decided to give this plant-based diet thing a whirl. Being the skeptical doctor she is, Gemma was less than enthusiastic.Where would he get his protein? Won’t there be nutritional deficiencies? We will never be invited to friend’s houses for dinner ever again! How would I feed my family? Undeterred, Richard completed that marathon, slicing an incredible one hour and ten minutes off his personal best. This got Gemma's attention. She had already been passionate about researching lifestyle medicine. How changes in stress, sleep, exercise and diet could improve health for a long time. But nothing was to prepare her for the powerful transformations that were possible when people embraced a whole-food plant-based diet.Hence ensued a deep dive into medical literature, scientific research, and self-experimentation.Today we explore the result of Gemma's journey. How it transformed her life and medical practice wholesale. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
