You may think that Rosé is a summer wine, made for sipping by the pool - but did you know it is the perfect pairing for Thanksgiving?!? We ain't sh*&^ing you! The kind of Rosé you serve matters, because after all Rosé is a way of making wine, and so the grapes in the Rosé and the style in which it is made make all the difference. Bird? Check. Stuffing? Check. Mac & Cheese? Check. Mashed potatoes and gravy? Check and Check. This episode also saw a couple of our highest rated wines of the year, so don't be a turkey - listen in! We won't steer you wrong! And you may find that you want to serve all three of these wines this year - and we won't stop you! It is very often you hear about an American family 10 generations into their contribution to society/ Certainly, you hear of such geneology in Europe; namesake wineries handed down through the generations.  In this case, it is 10 generations of farmers. Going back to the 1800's, John Bookwalter can tell you of the players and stories that landed him in Washington state's Columbia Valley making wine.  The history is rare and the wines are great; the old 1-2. Wine is about the story and the stories are thick and real.  The definition of success is as varied as there personalities to define it. Certainly, you could say that the best selling wines are a success, afterall they make lots of money but as you know, some of these best sellers are hideous wines. So, if you change your sights on what success is in the wine business, I think you will find that this type of success os satisfying and hoenst; the wines are honest and th philosophy is honest.    Enjoy this wonderful conversation.

Josh McDaniels is the CEO and Director of Winemaking at Bledsoe Wine Estates. He was born and raised in Walla Walla, where he fell in love with the wine industry at an early age. Josh started his own winery during high school and pursued this passion by obtaining formal education from the Institute of Enology and Viticulture. He also took extension courses through Washington State University and UC Davis and interned in Argentina at Paul Hobbs' Vina Cobos Winery to further his education. Josh has been named a "Game Changer of Washington Wine," a "Washington Prodigy," and a "Top 40 Under 40 Tastemakers of America" from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. In this episode with Josh McDaniels Creating one wine brand from scratch and growing it takes a lot of time, effort, and money. But running multiple brands across different locations is so much tougher. So, how do you successfully build and manage multiple wine brands? According to Josh McDaniels, the key is to leverage synergies and economies of scale. At Bledsoe Wine Estates, only one core team handles all three brands. One of the main benefits of this setup is having a fixed set of people Josh and his partner can trust. There's an established trust, understanding, and synergy between different personalities — which helps the brands run smoothly. In this episode of the Legends Behind the Craft podcast, Drew Thomas Hendricks and Bianca Harmon sit down with Josh McDaniels, the CEO and Director of Winemaking at Bledsoe Wine Estates. Josh shares how he got started in the wine business as early as high school, how he met NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe, and how they ended up as business partners. He also talks about the process of creating three wine brands and the challenges of managing and growing them.

I am a wine lover, and my wine education and favorites have grown since our kids left the nest. When our children were young, there was little time to indulge in learning about wines, so we chose as best we could and primarily drank wines from California. We lived in California until two years ago when we moved to the state of Washington. Being in close proximity to the wineries is certainly a treat,  but people from all over the world drink the delicious wines of Washington State. We are fortunate now to live close, taste more and learn a great deal! As very willing participants, Craig and I have been learning about wines from this great state of agriculture, but I think we have hit the jackpot recently. We were guests at an event hosted by Auction of Washington Wines, also known as AWW.  Sharing the love of Washington Wines Since its inception in 1988, AWW has raised nearly $55 million to benefit Seattle Children's Hospital, Washington State University Viticulture & Enology Research, and the AWW Industry Grant. AWW is listed in the top five wine charity auctions in the U.S. by Wine Spectator. Its mission is to support the growth and awareness of the Washington state wine industry through a series of celebrated events benefiting the community. At a recent event, we were introduced to winemakers from several prominent wineries here in Washington. What a privilege to talk with these experts and taste their wines! We learned so much about these wineries and their wines, made new friends, and had a wonderful conversation with Andrew Januik while we tasted wines from Novelty Hill and Januik Wineries. All of the winemakers offered us a taste of an older vintage and compared it with a newer vintage; such a fun idea! During our chat that evening, I kept thinking. I should create an episode on Washington wines! Wouldn't he be a fantastic guest on Travel Connections? Somehow he carved out some time in his busy schedule for us to dive a little deeper into wine and the joys of being a winemaker. Andrew probably has the most fabulous job ever. I think it would be dreamy! I know it's hard work, but sign me up. Let me tell you about Andrew's background. Most winemakers have spent most of their lives in the industry, and Andrew Januik is no different – except that he is only 35 years old. When he was just 13, he started working with wine on the weekends and full-time during his summers. As the son of a world-renowned winemaker, Andrew was born with winemaking in his blood, and the proof is in the pressing! Every wine that Andrew has made since starting his eponymous label in 2011 has been rated above 90 points. His passion for wine is rooted in the state of Washington but has led to nearly a decade of making wine in the Southern Hemisphere, including his own labels in both Chile and Argentina. Here are just a few of the exciting topics we covered in our interview: Why Washington Wines are special The fantastic weather (not similar to Seattle's) in the Columbia Valley provides the ability to produce a wide variety of grapes. The magic of excel spreadsheets and spending time in the vineyards Novelty Hill and Januik Wines "One cannot escape the lure of the wine cellar!" Upcoming Events for Auction of Washington Wines: Here's some information on the upcoming events in August for Auction of Washington Wines: You can enjoy more than 100 wines, global BBQ, and casual fun at the Winemaker Picnic & Barrel Auction, or dress up for the Annual Gala, both held at Chateau Ste. In Episode 14, we focus on Washington. Washington produces the second largest amount of wine per capita in the United States, after California.  Established in 1984, the Colombia Valley AVA is the largest wine region in the state of Washington. This AVA includes over 11,000,000 acres (4,500,000 ha), of which over 40,000 acres (16,000 ha) are under vine.  Indeed, about 99% of the vineyard area in Washington is under this AVA, and subsequent Sub-AVAs.  (American Viticultural Areas, like some of their Old World Counterparts, can be nested within each other like Matryoshka dolls.)  This particular suite of AVAs has become well known for producing traditional Bordeaux varietals, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.  But you know me. (Or, at least, are getting to know me at the very least.) I don't like to review and look at the common stuff, necessarily. I like to look at the less usual things, when possible. Which is why I chose to look at the 2012 Pinot Gris from Maryhill Winery, instead of, say, a Washington Merlot. (which I do have lined up for the second episode discussing Washington Wines at a much later date).  Gary and I found ourselves extremely disappointed with the 2012 Colombia Valley Pinot Gris, and it is telling that it seems that Maryhill has uprooted their Pinot Gris vines since the production of this wine.  Why is it disappointing?  Take a listen to find out. (In retrospect, we should have talked more about Pinot Grigio vs. Pinot Gris in this episode, but we ended up far too disappointed in this wine to do that.  Suffice to say, they're largely the same thing, except not; there are some stylistic differences. Italian-style Pinot Grigio vintages are typically lighter-bodied, crisp, fresh, with vibrant stone fruit and floral aromas and a touch of spice, while Pinot Gris, especially from Alsace, tend to be more full-bodied, richer, spicier, and more viscous in texture, meaning this particular vintage does align more on the Gris side of the spectrum.  And now you know.) Lots of closures as well as new location announcements populate our Newsbytes segment. March is Washington Wine month and we'll tell you where all the best wine dinners are in our Calendar segment. We've got a special recipe that shows up at the close of the show. Listen for it.

I was honored to meet Martin years ago at a private event for a well known international author and newspaper columnist.  At that meeting, I was able to partake of his great wines, only then discovering that his company, SOZO Wines, does something remarkable.  SOZO donates a significant portion of its profits to help those that cannot help themselves.  Whether we are talking about homelessness, sex trafficking or the like, SOZO is there little by little to make its mark.  In fact, if you buy his wines, you can pick where you want your non-profit dollars to go.  That said, this is no cheap wine, so don't be fooled.  This is the real McCoy and I found his story reflects my own ambitions regarding business and the development of something "important." Even if you aren't fascinated with wine, or couldn't care less about homelessness, I believe you will love this conversation...in fact, I guarantee it. Be willing to learn something today and see how you can impact your own little corner of the world. 1:30 Gnomes.
