DIZNEY COAST TO COAST - The Ultimate Unofficial Disney Fan Podcast
Disney fans rejoice! Disneyland's 70th anniversary celebration has officially kicked off. With it comes the return of the nighttime spectacular "Wondrous Journeys", originally created for the Disney100 celebration in 2023 honoring the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company. This nighttime spectacular features moments from every animated feature released by the Walt Disney Animation Studios at that time. Joining me to discuss the creation of this truly spectacular show is the Associate Creative Director, Brian Larsh. Brian worked his way through the ranks of Disney nighttime spectaculars having worked on projects all around the globe. In this conversation, we discuss the original brainstorming sessions for "Wondrous Journeys", the process of bringing it into the parks, how much the specific audience is taken into consideration, plus the craft of projection mapping as a whole. That and so much more is coming your way on this episode of Dizney Coast To Coast. ------ EPISODE LINKS: All four views of "Wondrous Journeys" ------ GIVEAWAYS, BONUSES AND SUPPORT: Gain early access to episodes, take part in live streams, and gain more bonuses by joining the DCTC Patreon. The new "Fire of the Rising Moons" experience takes the park's regular fireworks display and adds a thrilling Star Wars soundtrack, exclusively heard within Galaxy's Edge. Previously, the fireworks themselves were visible from the land, but lacked a dedicated musical accompaniment. To fully transport guests to a galaxy far, far away, Disney has crafted a soundscape of iconic Star Wars themes that complements the fireworks display. This experience debuted during the "Wondrous Journeys" nighttime spectacular, and is expected to become a regular feature. The score is likely to be adapted to match the length and dramatic moments of whichever fireworks show is presented on a particular night. This was the first non-preview show as the first show debuted on 4/5/24 with cancelled fireworks.Audio recorded on Saturday 4/6/24 at 9:30pm. Temperature was in the low 50s, slight breeze, clear skies. --------------------Donate to the Show:Help keep Park Sensory going with a one-time donation. How can we align our pedagogies with the Palestinian freedom struggle and other anti-colonial movements? How do we tune our minds and imaginations toward just futures--even and especially when facing retaliation for liberationist stances? In light of the reinvigorated global struggle for a free Palestine, and as we witness the state of Israel's ongoing genocidal violence against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, we are re-releasing our January 2021 interview with poet, scholar, teacher, and organizer Dina Omar. Dina, received her PhD in Anthropology from Yale University and who was one of the founders of the national network of Students for Justice in Palestine, speaks to us about the intersection of Palestine liberation and our pedagogical frameworks -- from our decisions about language and representation, to the exhaustion of social suffering paradigms, to the psychological effects of occupation and eliminatory violence. A thesis of this episode is that, whether or not our teaching is “about” Palestine, it cannot be separated from its struggle. This of course in part because of the alignment of many of our institutions of higher education with the Israeli state. But, as Dina explains, it is also because of how a colonial project mediates the language we use to think about, much less talk about, what is happening in Palestine and Israel. This means that, whether or not the history and politics of Palestine comes up explicitly in a lesson plan, the practice of learning to read and learning to identify narrative obfuscation, takes on higher stakes.A list of resources for further learning + organizing:-Palestine and Praxis Statement, referenced in the episode, written in 2021 and co-authored by Dina Omar.-The Palestinian Feminist Collective, a collective of Palestinian/Arab feminists working toward Palestinian liberation. Recently, I got to speak with composer and Grammy-Award-winning songwriter Alex Geringas, who has had the distinct pleasure of creating many songs and musical numbers for the Disney Universe. Alex is the co-writer of the song “My Kind of Monster” for the Disney Channel Original movie "Under Wraps 2", alongside the film's directors Alex Zamm and Michael Goode. The song is full of energy and celebrates letting your freak flag fly. It was performed by cast members Malachi Barton, Christian J Simon and Sophia Hammons. The movie centers around three friends Amy, Gilbert, and Marshal who band together once again to keep their beloved mummy friend Harold and his love, Rose, safe from the wrath of an evil mummy. Alex's song My Kind of Monster captures the festive feel of Halloween, and is a great companion for this family-friendly feature. Alex's music can also be heard at Disneyland. Along with Duddy Brown, he created the theme song for Disneyland's firework show, “Wondrous Journeys,” entitled “It's Wondrous.” The lyrics are enchanting, and the music is uplifting as it crescendos to a magical climax. The song explores “the magic that we call life,” which encapsulates the Disney vibe perfectly. Continuing his work in the Disney realm, Alex also co-wrote the theme song for "The Chicken Squad" on Disney Junior. Additionally, he wrote the lyrics and produced the Camp Minnie theme song for "Minnie's Bow-Toons".

We wanted to break them down for those looking to hear an in-depth review, so we decided a bonus episode made the most sense to keep spoilers clear from our regular weekly episode. At least one of the Yetis' previous theme park ideas has materialized and will debut this June in DCA! Listen in to hear about their prediction. Plus, the crew took a trip to Toontown to see what kind of gentrification took place in Mickey and pals' old hood. Not only did they meet up with the Big Cheese himself, but Jedi Tiff experienced an attraction for the very first time! Hear all about it. And, it's not a true Disneyland trip without entertainment, so buckle up for the Yetis' reaction to the Wondrous Journeys with Fireworks show and the return of the Magic Happens parade!

News: Bob Iger talked about the company and the parks during a question and answer session at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. He emphasized that reducing crowds in the parks was important to improving the guest experience. It sounds like part of the process to help with that would be to add new capacity and attractions to serve more guests. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/ceo-bob-iger-talks-disney-parks-guest-experience-rethinking-pricing-strategies-and-opportunities-to-add-more-attractions/ Spring Break season has descended upon the resort. This year, it has been very interesting to see the crowds because of the on again, off again weather changes. On the nice weather days, the parks feel like they are back to the pre-pandemic levels, then just a day later with rain, the parks seem deserted. Waits on the rainy days were mostly under 30 minutes – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Nightly fireworks have returned to the resort for the higher crowds and spring break. Usually, the fireworks are only part of the show from Friday through Sunday. Now, they are performed every night, which is a wonderful way to see Wondrous Journeys. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Walt Disney Imagineering were at it again showing off some of the new technology that they have been working on at a Disney Parks presentation at South by Southwest. Some of the eye-catching things included a “life size” Tinker Bell. In addition, they demoed a small dynamic robot that could bring Judy Hopps to life, along with showing off the Hulk character that was in Avengers Campus in September. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/new-look-at-life-size-tinker-bell-for-disney-parks-meet-and-greet-may-still-debut/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/video-disney-parks-shares-closer-look-at-life-size-tiny-tinker-bell-technology/ The rest of Toontown opens this weekend, but another smaller part of the land has opened. EngineEar Souvenirs has opened as the attached gift shop to Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. The new shop is very themed to trains, including a train that travels around the store above guest's heads. The shop carries a lot of Toontown and Runaway Railway attraction merchandise. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/03/10/disney-opened-a-new-store-today-come-check-it-out/ and https://www.micechat.com/349905-disneyland-toontown-merchandise-engineear-souvenirs/ St. Patrick's Day is this Friday and of course, Disneyland has some treats to help celebrate! Guests can pick up some shamrock-shaped rice crispy treats, green stuff at Red Rose Tavern, a cupcake and donut at Craftsman Grill at the Grand Californian Hotel, and a cocktail at the Hearthstone Lounge though March 19th. Downtown Disney also has an assortment of options for the holiday. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/full-list-of-st-patricks-day-2023-food-beverages-coming-to-disneyland-resort/ and https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Sunday, April 9th is Easter and that can mean only one thing: Handmade Chocolate Fudge Easter Eggs are back! Every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday until Easter, guests can pick up an egg for $12.99 at the Candy Palace. If you don't want that much sugar, you can just watch Cast Members make them in the window of Candy Palace. No word on the flavors for this year just yet. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/03/10/disneys-famous-chocolate-easter-eggs-are-back/ and https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Minnie has once again returned to welcome guests to Disneyland! The Mickey floral has been replaced by the Minnie floral for International Women's Day, which was on March 8th. We expect Minnie to stay in place for at least a few weeks. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ We talk about synergy between the Disney brands that used to happen a lot in the parks, and there is some that has come back recently. Now through April 30th at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, a special Hulu-inspired Coca-Cola Freestyle flavor will be available. The new flavor is called Hulu Fanta Suprise and helps to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the streaming service. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/limited-time-hulu-inspired-coca-cola-freestyle-flavor-coming-to-disneyland-resort-and-walt-disney-world/ We talked about Adventureland Day last week, but our past guest Freddy Martin, better known as “Skipper Freddy” has posted a wonderful article on this year's event and what it all entails. To read all about it, check out the link in our show notes. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/khaki-crowds-descend-on-disneyland-for-adventureland-day-2023/ Discussion Topic: Don Morin – Founder and Host of PNW Mouse Meet Since 2009 Don and his team have been creating a magical experience for thousands of Guests. “Passion, Disney Fandom and giving them more than they expect are key ingredients to our success!” The PNW Mouse Meet is an unofficial Disney Fan Event that was created by Disney Fans FOR Disney Fans. To all who come to this happy podcast, welcome! Dan and Gina were able to get together and ride Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway this last one and this podcast almost was a runaway as Anthony did not hold back his thoughts on the version of Mickey the ride uses. We discuss the line and how this ride is similar and different than both Rise of the Resistance and Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge that just opened officially at Universal. There is always food involved so Dan breaks down his trip to Cafe Orleans and both he and Gina sampled some of the Lunar New Year food. Hear about Gina's birthday at Carthay, Dan checking out Wondrous Journeys, the display at the Grand Californian and much more including a special appearance by Michael who will even be in the Disney parks soon. Come along for the ride as we discuss all this and more on the Disney Culture podcast. See ya real soon!

Earl of Sandwich reopened it's doors on February 1st last week and it is a nice upgrade from the former location. The new location, in the old La Brea Bakery, is so close to the gates of Disneyland, making it a great quick stop when park hopping. There is plenty of outdoor shaded seating. In the video, music from the new show and concept artwork and testing for the new show we previewed. https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/12/disneyland-resort-reveals-new-details-for-wondrous-journeys-coming-to-disneyland-park-beginning-jan-27/ In the early morning hours of December 29th, a small fire broke out at the New Orleans Square Station. The fire was contained to the small building on the far right of the station, across the tracks from where guests queue up to board. The water tower next to the building involved does not appear to have been damaged. The train opened with the rest of the park that morning, with scrims already up masking the damage from guests. No word on the cause of the fire yet. https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2022/12/29/small-fire-confirmed-by-cast-members-at-disneyland-resort/#more-759349 With Lunar New Year just around the corner, Disney has announced the food marketplaces that will be available this year. Returning are Lucky 9 Lantern, Prosperity Bao & Buns, Red Dragon Spice Traders, and Longevity Noodle Co. New this year are Bamboo Blessings, and Wrapped with Love. The booths will serve a variety of Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese foods. Returning for the event is the Sip and Savor Pass. Lunar New Year kicks off on January 20th and runs through February 15th. https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disney-california-adventure/lunar-new-year-food-marketplaces/ Since the introduction of the Genie+ service, it has been pretty much available to everyone. The service sold out for three days in a row between Christmas and New Year's Eve. The service was even at a higher price point for those days when it sold out. Guests were not completely out of luck, the individual Lightning Lane reservations for Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers were still available. If you are planning on going to Disneyland during a busy time of year, make sure to purchase Genie+ early in the day to avoid missing it if it sells out. https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2022/12/28/genie-sells-out-in-disneyland/#more-758995 This year will bring some new perks to the Magic Key program at Disneyland. New items are coming to the Magic Key Terrace, like Barbeque Short Rib Sliders, and a Mint Julep Cocktail. Key Holders who purchase the Disney100 popcorn bucket will get refills for just $1.50 each through February 12th. A new Disney100 print will be available for pickup, and booking Walt's Main Street Story guided tour between January 9th and January 26th will receive a commemorative button. A Magic Key exclusive Pandora charm will also be available, in addition to new PhotoPass Magic Shots between January 9th and January 19th. https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2022/12/28/new-perks-announced-for-disneyland-magic-key-holders/#more-758886 At long last, the Indiana Jones Adventure will be getting the TLC it deserves and has sorely needed for quite some time now. A new animatronic snake was spotted by various online sources, which we spotted ourselves when riding the monorail on our December trip. This means that at the very least, we will have a fixed snake in the attraction. Currently, the refurbishment is scheduled to last from January 9th to "Spring, 2023." This is quite the length of time and is a good sign that things will be much better when it returns! https://www.micechat.com/342798-disneyland-update-and-the-verdict-is/ There are some changes coming to a couple of popular stores in Downtown Disney. Wonderground Gallery and the Disney Home store are closing on January 9th and will return with some changes. The rumor for the Wonderground Gallery is that it will be moving to the old ESPN building, which will give it a lot more space and finally do something with the empty building. The Disney Home store then may expand into the Wonderground Gallery space next door. During the closure, much of the merchandise from these stores will be available at other Downtown Disney locations. https://www.micechat.com/343186-disneyland-news-wonderground-gallery-disney-home-set-for-transformation/ New Years Eve at Disneyland was a wet one, but that didn't keep guests away. Disneyland setup some temporary barriers to keep walkways open and separate from fireworks viewing, directional signage to help guests get around in the crowds, and more. For those of you who watched the entertainment on TV through Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve with Ryan Seacrest, you would think that the park was dry and full of famous performers. This was not the case since most of these were pre-recorded. The rain did make for a great light show at midnight to ring in the new year. Other than attraction wait times being very long because of Genie+ reservations, the park was a pretty great place to be. https://www.micechat.com/343222-disneyland-update-dont-let-the-door-hit-you-on-the-way-out/ The Magic Shop on Main Street has been run by Houdini Magic since 2009 but was recently purchased by Vanishing Inc. The new owners are looking to make some changes to the Magic Shop, which current employees of the location are optimistic about. When completed, the store should be more impressive inside and out. https://www.micechat.com/343222-disneyland-update-dont-let-the-door-hit-you-on-the-way-out/ Shortly after the Lunar New Year Celebration wraps up, the Food & Wine Festival will be moving in on March 3rd. No new food booths have been announced this year, but all the booths from last year's celebration should be returning. Just like with the Lunar New Year Celebration, the Sip and Savor Pass will be for sale, offering 8 tabs that can be used at any of the 12 booths. https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2022/12/29/food-booths-announced-for-2023-food-and-wine-festival-in-disney-california-adventure/ During Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years' Eve with Ryan Seacrest, a short preview was shown of World of Color - ONE coming to Disney California Adventure on January 27th. Encanto, Soul, Mulan, and Pocahontas scenes were shown in the short promo for the celebration. At the very end, there was even a Star Wars section which will be only the second time Star Wars has been in a World of Color show. https://dlnewstoday.com/2022/12/video-first-look-at-world-of-color-one-star-wars-scenes-confirmed/ Discussion Tage and Teresa – Disney Studios and Imagineering

Meg Arenberg speaks to writer Sonia Nimr and translator Marcia Lynx Qualey about the translation, editing and publication of Thunderbird, Nimr's speculative fiction trilogy. In this series, teen girl protagonist Noor finds herself hurtled into a fast-paced time-traveling adventure where magical worlds and mythology is combined with Palestinian history. Nimr explained that the trilogy was inspired by the phoenix which is often represented in Palestinian folklore as well as in archeological artifacts. Qualey said there is a problematic expectation from Western publishers to explain historical events and sometimes pressure to create a narrative that reflects both sides of the conflict in the region. Nimr was indignant about having to be on the defensive about the reality of living under occupation in Palestine. She powerfully declared that "this is one thing that really hurts and pains me as a writer and as a Palestinian. We always have to be nice and put the other narrative and be careful when we write. I don't want to be careful, this is my life."Sonia Nimr is an award-winning Palestinian writer and storyteller who writes children and YA books. She is author of Ghaddar the Ghoul and Other Palestinian Stories, Wondrous Journeys in Strange Lands and theThunderbird trilogy. She won the 2014 Etisalat Award for Arabic Children's Literature in the Young Adult category, and was also shortlisted for the prize for the first Thunderbird book. M. Lynx Qualey is a literary critic, translator editor, and co-founder of ArabLit. She also publishes ArabLit Quarterly magazine and co-hosts the Bulaq podcast. Next spring, the Magic Happens parade will step off through Disneyland once again. The parade will be part of the 100th Anniversary of the Walt Disney Company in 2023. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/09/disneyland-resort-announcements-from-d23-expo-2022-and-more/ Not only is Magic Happens returning for the Disney 100 celebration, but new versions of World of Color and the Disneyland fireworks are debuting in the spring. World of Color – One will celebrate the storytelling legacy started by Walt Disney 100 years ago. The show will tell a story of how a single action creates a ripple that can grow into a wave of change. Wondrous Journeys will be the new Disneyland fireworks show that will have nods to all 60 Walt Disney Animation Studios films to date, and will include more state of the art projection effects on Main Street, it's a small world, and the Rivers of America. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/09/disneyland-resort-announcements-from-d23-expo-2022-and-more/ The Disney Parks Blog did what Josh D'Amaro didn't do at the D23 Expo last week – they gave us some information on the Magic Bands coming to Disneyland! No exact date was mentioned, but they did confirm that Magic Bands should be at the resort for guests this fall. The Magic Bands will allow guests to get into the parks, redeem Lightning Lane reservations, open Disney Resort Hotel room doors, buy merchandise, link PhotoPass photos, and more. Some of the flashier features include glowing with the nighttime entertainment and adding the ability to play games in the park. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/09/magicband-features-and-experiences-revealed-for-disneyland-resort-coming-this-fall/ One of the announcements from the D23 Expo last weekend was the new name of the hotel, formerly known as the Paradise Pier Hotel. The Pixar Place Hotel will be the name when the refurbishment is complete. No date on that yet. A Finding Nemo themed splash pad will be coming to the hotel, along with the Southern California team from Great Maple, which will run the restaurant on the first floor, along with other food and beverage locations at the hotel. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/09/disneyland-resort-announcements-from-d23-expo-2022-and-more/ Princess and the Frog has come to New Orleans Square – long before the retheming of Splash Mountain! Eudora's Chic Boutique featuring Tiana's Gourmet Secrets opened this week and offers Princess and the Frog themed merchandise, cooking supplies, and Tiana's own spices and sauces. Imagineers designed the story of the shop to be owned by Tiana's mother, Eudora. The new shop is just one main space that is pretty small, with walls covered in artwork showing the lives and scenes of New Orleans and Tiana herself! – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2022/09/20/explore-disneys-new-princess-and-the-frog-themed-store-with-us-eudoras-chic-boutique/ Overnight guests at Disney Resort Hotels will have a special experience for Halloween this year. Each hotel will offer trick-or-treating, with a treat map for each hotel with locations handing out complimentary candy. Hotel guests are encouraged to sign up at the front desk of their Disney Resort Hotel. The dates for this are October 28th through 31st. On Halloween night, there will be a costume contest on the Adventure Lawn at the Disneyland Hotel. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/09/celebrate-halloween-time-in-downtown-disney-district-and-at-the-disneyland-resort-hotels/ Weeklyteers who are interested in attending Grad Nite events at the resort will have to pay a little more this year. Ticket prices are up between 8 to 22 percent compared to last year. The Grad Nite party experience is $99 on weekdays and $104 on weekends, all-dat DCA admission with the Grad Nite party and a parkhopper option is $199 for weekdays and $219 for weekends. – https://www.ocregister.com/2022/09/16/disneyland-raises-prices-up-to-22-for-grad-nite-2023/ The painting has wrapped up at the Hollywood Lounge in the Hollwood Pictures Backlot area of Disney California Adventure. The signs have been convered to digital displays, and a new mural has appeared with the lounge's name on the side. The menu has not been updated. – https://www.micechat.com/333927-disneyland-update-halloween-treats-traffic-tricks/ Another patent has been posted that was requested by Disney. This time, it is for a glasses-free VR attraction experience. In basic terms, the new technology would use projections and reflections, much like the Pepper's Ghost effect that we have had in the Haunted Mansion for years now. Of course, just because a patent is filed doesn't mean that it will show up anywhere in the parks soon. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2022/09/disney-files-patent-for-glasses-free-vr-attraction/ Discussion Topic: Tage and Teresa's Trip to Disneyland and Oogie Boogie Bash Recap
