For Black Americans, following the news can be a psychological challenge. 4 in 5 Black adults say they see or hear racist or racially insensitive coverage about Black people at least sometimes. That’s according to a 2023 Pew Research survey. And coverage can be hard to watch even if it isn’t insensitive. While news about violence against Black people is important for communities to know, it can also affect one’s mental health. This can be a lot to deal with, so some people are trying to change the narrative by adding another emotion to the mix: joy. This hour, we’re talking to people who are centering Black joy. We’ll hear from the the owner of a local woodworking business called Black Joy Creations and the founders of a summer camp that is bringing smiles to campers’ faces. GUESTS: Akeera Peterkin: woodworker and founder of Black Joy Creations. The Connecticut-based business sells hand-crafted wood products and leads woodworking classes. Akeera also runs a business as a therapist and social worker. Camille Hollenquest: Executive of Director of Detroit Heals Detroit and Co-Founder of Black Joy Summer Camp. Brianna Donald: Co-Chair of Detroit Heals Detroit and Co-Founder of Black Joy Summer Camp. This episode originally aired on October 3, 2025. Additional production help from our intern Amanda Adams. We all know some elements of our personality but have you had them formally measured and then thought about how those traits might affect what you make, how you make, or how you approach making art in general?Today with the help of TWO Ph.D. psychologists, resident WIBS psychologist Sherry Pagoto, and psychologist/woodworker Brad Appelhans, we all take the BIG 5 PERSONALITY TEST and then interpret the results as it relates to our making and art. In this episode of the ShopNotes Podcast, Phil, Logan, and John cover everything from vintage woodworking tools to the surprisingly competitive gas station scene in the Midwest. We kick things off with listener comments about the upcoming "Domino Killer" joinery tools, Kreg's woodworking-focused approach to tool development, and the ongoing debate between premium and budget woodworking equipment. Then Phil shares the ups and downs of rebuilding his vintage Delta/Rockwell drill press—including seized bearings, stubborn chucks, hydraulic presses, and why old machines aren't always as easy to restore as YouTube makes them look. Plus, we somehow spend a significant amount of time discussing Casey's, QuickStar, QuickTrip, breakfast pizza, and the convenience-store culture of Iowa. In this episode, Keith has finally wrapped up his walnut wall-hanging cabinet build and is deep in editing and voiceover work, which he's finding more painful than usual. But not as painful as it was for Jerry when the cabinet fell on top of him. Mary finished her bookcase and has been doing more stained glass work and is challenging herself with a new series of small stools that combine woodworking, stained glass, and upholstery as she tries to develop a "thing" she's known for. Jason is up against a major deadline on a self-inflicted nightmare commission for a local church with 16ft white oak benches with continuous grain. In Episode 273 of the ShopNotes Podcast, the crew dives into everything happening in the woodworking world — from hand tool events and lumber prices to TV show updates, shop projects, and new tools coming to the market. Logan shares a full recap of his trip to Hand Tool Haven at the Plain Wellness event in Pennsylvania, including tool vendors, demonstrations, silent auction finds, and a few close calls with buying even more hand planes. The guys also discuss upcoming events like Woodworking in America 2026 and why woodworking competitions at county and state fairs are worth entering. Back in the shop, John wraps up filming for Season 20 of The Woodsmith Shop TV show, Phil works through design details on his latest desk project, and Logan gets dangerously close to finishing a set of custom church doors — while also getting pulled into unexpected woodworking side quests. Plus, the crew talks about Kreg's newly announced cordless loose tenon machine, the ongoing corded vs. cordless debate, walnut from Chunk A' Trunk, listener comments about lumber suppliers, and plenty of woodworking shop banter along the way. Got a question or comment for the show? Send it to woodsmith@woodsmith.com or leave a comment on the ShopNotes Podcast YouTube channel.
The other day my brother-in-law asked me a simple question: if you could go back to age 25 knowing what you know now, what would you do differently? The answer turned out to be anything but simple, because every change I'd make would unravel the chain of events that led me to where I am today. If I hadn't gotten into computers at 12, I probably wouldn't have gone into IT security. Without that career, I wouldn't have started my own company, moved to Switzerland, transferred to the US, met my wife, had our kids, or ever started homesteading. One different decision and none of this exists. In this episode, I work through that tension and share the principles I'd build my life around if I were starting over – even knowing I probably wouldn't change the path itself. The biggest one is making money work for you as early as possible. Trading time for dollars is a losing proposition long-term because time is the one thing you can't make more of. I'd start investing immediately, spreading across ETFs, real estate, cryptocurrency and precious metals. We started investment accounts for our kids shortly after they were born, and half of everything they earn from chores and their businesses goes straight into compounding. By the time they're my age, that head start will matter enormously. The second is buying land. Even a small piece somewhere out in the sticks with water access and room to grow. Land with resources is independence, and the earlier you acquire it, the more options you have later. I'd save aggressively to make that happen as fast as possible. The third is learning to build things with your hands. Woodworking, framing, welding, masonry. I'm learning all of this now at 44 and wishing I'd started at 15. Those skills also put you outside in nature, which is another thing most people have to artificially incorporate into their lives later. And the last is learning to think critically about established systems early. Most of what everyone does, how we eat, how we live, when we go to bed, doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Being willing to do things differently and tolerate the inconvenience of going against the grain is a skill that compounds just like money does. I saw myself in Silicon Valley at one point, building and selling tech companies. Now I'm raising cattle and recording a podcast from a tiny home on 45 acres. I wouldn't trade it for anything. In today's episode of the Master Series, we discuss the visionary American artist and furniture designer Wharton Esherick, celebrated as the father of the Studio Furniture Movement. Esherick believed furniture and sculpture were one and the same — that a chair, a table, or a staircase could be as emotionally resonant as any painting or bronze. His most iconic pieces pulse with organic, twisting forms drawn from nature, none more famous than his breathtaking spiral staircase, hand-carved from red oak, which stopped the world at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Did you know he started as a painter and only discovered wood by accident, carving frames for his own canvases? Did you know his entire home and studio on Valley Forge Mountain was itself a 40-year work of art — every door, cabinet, and light pull shaped by his own hands — now a National Historic Landmark and Museum??? Speaking of which, our special guest today is the Executive Director of his museum, Julie Siglin! In this episode of Grandma's Silver, Allie Kochinsky sits down with Cynthia Main, founder of Sunhouse Craft, for a conversation about tradition, material knowledge, and what it means to carry craft foward today. This episode is part of a special series exploring American craftsmanship inspired by Colonial Williamsburg, created in partnership with the Craft & Forge brand of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Craft & Forge collaborates with contemporary makers whose work reflects the Foundation's mission to preserve historic trades and pass on artisanal knowledge through living practice.Based in Berea, Kentucky, Sunhouse Craft operates as both a working studio and a training environment, dedicated to reviving regional materials and traditional making practices through well-made goods for daily use. Through this collaboration, Cynthia's work draws inspiration from the Historic Area, archival collections, and the legacy of early American craft, while remaining rooted in place and process.Together, Allie and Cynthia explore the philosophy behind making objects meant to last, the role of nature and seasonal materials in shaping craft, and the balance between historic inspiration and contemporary design. The conversation also centers on Sunhouse Craft's white oak basketry apprenticeship, an initiative supported in part by South Arts, which is working to restore an endangered Appalachian tradition through hands-on training, mentorship, and long-term skill development. This episode offers a thoughtful look at craft as living practice, one sustained not only through objects, but through people, knowledge, and the act of making itself. In this episode, you'll hear:The path into woodworking and traditional craftHow regional materials and seasons shape the workThe influence of Colonial Williamsburg and the Craft & Forge collaborationWhat it takes to rebuild a disappearing craft traditionWhy apprenticeship is essential to preservationThe relationship between function, beauty, and longevity in handmade objectsRESOURCESVisit the Sunhouse Craft website here, and follow along on Instagram. Are you the kind of person who enjoys the predictable routines of life? Or are you someone who feels the excitement of something wholly novel and new? This preference is largely determined by our brain chemistry and risk tolerance. Evolutionarily, a bit of BOTH is likely best as we need to lean into what is dependable and safe, but at the same time opening ourselves up to new things occasionally. But where do Paul, Erik, and Rich fall on this contiuum? Where do you fall on this contiuum? Which is better for business as a professional woodworker like Erik and Rich? Today we have Tom. He is 40 years old from New Canaan, CT and took his last drink on July 12th, 2024. This episode is brought to you by: Sign up and get 10% off: Better Help Soberlink – sign up and claim your $100 enrollment bonus Happy March! The Café RE theme this month is Mindfulness and Awareness. This key topic helps us build awareness and space, which ultimately gives us the freedom to make different choices beyond drinking. Café RE will feature chats focused on mindfulness. It has been said that the most powerful medicine can't match the power of awareness. Recovery Elevator is compiling a list of recovery stories and we're going to put them in a book called This is How We Quit. If you want to be part of this book, and submit your story, we'd love to have you. There is no sobriety time requirement so if your saying to yourself, well, I've only been sober 30 days, I can't submit my story, then nonsense. Send an email to info@recoveryelevator.com and you'll get a google form to fill out and submit your story. [03:56] Thoughts from Paul: Paul shares with us a quote from author Brianna Wiest. "Your new life is going to cost you your old one. It's going to cost you your comfort zone and your sense of direction. It's going to cost you relationships and friends. It's going to cost you being liked and understood. It doesn't matter. The people who are meant for you are going to meet you on the other side. You're going to build a new comfort zone around the things that actually move you forward. Instead of being liked, you're going to be loved. Instead of being understood, you're going to be seen. All you're going to lose is what was built for a person you no longer are." [06:25] Paul introduces Tom: Tom is 40 years old and lives in New Canaan, CT. He is a construction superintendent, is married and they have 5-year-old twins. For fun, Tom enjoys gold, skiing and spending time with his kids. Tom first drank at age 14 and says he frequently blacked out when he drank going forward. There were multiple legal consequences throughout his late teens and early twenties as his binge drinking continued through college. Around age 21, Tom began using cocaine which enabled him to drink more with less blackouts. After college, Tom and his friends mainly drank on the weekend. Fast forward a few years and he found himself drinking alone during the week while his friends did not. As time progressed, he would wake up daily and trash talk himself for not being able to stop at just one or two. He felt like Jekyll and Hyde and struggled with that throughout his 30's. In 2020, Tom's twins were born. He struggled to juggle his drinking life and his family life. His wife was growing frustrated, and Tom wasn't the parent that he had hoped he would be. In spite of this, he never really thought about quitting drinking, but quickly realized moderation didn't work. He knew he would need to quit drinking for himself and not just for his family. His wife was growing frustrated, and Tom knew he would lose everything if he didn't quit. On June 12th, 2024, Tom was going to start a new job and looked at it as a clean slate. He says quitting was awkward and he began to talk to an alcohol counselor that helped him a lot. Within the first few months Tom felt better physically and able to establish a workout routine which helped him start the day in a better headspace. He started listening to the RE podcast and relating to others' stories. Exercise has become a hobby for Tom. Woodworking is a hobby that has come back for Tom as well, he takes pride in the projects he completes now. Tom's parting piece of guidance: If you can make it through the first couple of days, and start to see the benefit, it'll get better every day. There'll be bad moments and challenging moments, but don't give up. Recovery Elevator Remember this is an inside job. It all starts from the inside out. I love you guys.
