Topics discussed include the backlash against the ripped-from-the-headlines romance novel Roughing the Princess, the fuzziness between RPF, biopics, celebrity profiles, and social-media narratives, and how Zan—who's written plain old RPF in addition to meta fiction about celebrities and fans—thinks about her own work in light of these thorny boundaries.

Magic might just want to murder you! Zan Romanoff and I are talking about Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. This adult fantasy novel imagines that each of Yale's Ancient Eight secret societies practice a different form of magic while a shadowy ninth house watches over them all. The main character Alex Stern is headed for anything but the Ivy League until she catches the university's attention when she's the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. In this episode we talk about: How the magic of Ninth House differs from Harry Potter and many of the other magic school books we're used to; Why it feels like this book was written especially for us; Not wanting to read about happy people when you're struggling; The grand tradition of children of the west running away to the east to become "real" people; What violence we are and aren't comfortable with, and what that might say about us; Darlington is an addict and we love him. Things Lulu Shapiro's 5,000 Flash followers don't know about her:  •  That the video of her with another girl was never supposed to go public.  •  That Owen definitely wasn't supposed to break up with her because of it.  •  That behind the carefully crafted selfies and scenes Lulu projects onto people's screens, her life feels like a terrible, uncertain mess. Then Lulu meets Cass. Cass isn't interested in looking at Lulu's life, only in living in it. And The Hotel--a gorgeous space with an intriguing, Old Hollywood history and a trust-fund kid to restore it--seems like the perfect, secret place for them to get to know each other. But just because Lulu has stepped out of the spotlight doesn't mean it'll stop following her every move.Look is about what you present vs. who you really are, about real intimacy and manufactured intimacy and the blurring of that line. It's a deceptively glamorous, feminist, emotionally complex, utterly compelling, queer coming-of-age novel about falling in love and taking ownership of your own self--your whole self--in the age of social media. Today, we’re sharing a conversation with a couple of writers who are definite goals – as writers, of course, but especially as friends. Zan Romanoff and Miranda Popkey met in college, and they talk to us about how their friendship has evolved, its role in their writing, and about writing women’s friendships in fiction. They also talk process, craft, and day jobs and writing – basically everything. Zan Romanoff writes essays, journalism, and fiction, with a particular focus on and interest in areas of culture that don't always get the respect they deserve: stuff like fandom, food, and the Kardashian clan. She also writes YA, including the forthcoming novel Look, out on March 31 (make sure to preorder!), and lives in LA. Miranda is a writer, editor, social worker, and translator from the Italian. She’s lived in California, Connecticut, Texas, New York, Missouri, and Italy. Right now, she lives in Massachusetts with her husband and her dog, and her first novel, Topics of Conversation, was published by Knopf on January 7, 2020. You can find them at zanromanoff.com and mirandapopkey.com. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed talking to them! *** As always, we'd love for you to take a minute to rate and review us in your podcast app, as this helps other listeners find the show.  Find us on Instagram @marginallypodcast. Meghan's occasionally on Twitter @meghanembee, and Olivia’s @roamingolivia Theme music is "It's Time" by Scaricá Ricascá.  Have a question you'd like us to try to answer, or a topic you'd love to have us cover? Interested in being a guest? Contact us here.  Thanks for listening, and get to work! If you like Marginally, you should check out #amwriting, with Jess and KJ, where two much more experienced writers talk through their processes with each other and celebrated guests.

The presenting sponsor for this episode is The Slow Novel Lab, a six-week online writing and creativity course developed and taught by bestselling and award-winning novelist Nina LaCour (listen to her First Draft episodes here and here). The next six-week session of The Slow Novel Lab begins on February 16th, and you can enroll today by going to NinaLaCour.com. This episode was brought to you in part by Adeline’s Aria by Laynie Bynum, the first in her new Infernal Echo series, out Jan. 28 from Fire and Ice YA! Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Miranda is best friends with Zan Romanoff, author of A Song to Take the World Apart, Grace and the Fever, and the forthcoming Look (listen to her First Draft interview here, and her mailbag episode here!). You can read them write about their friendship in The Atlantic’s Friendship Files here, and in the Two Bossy Dames newsletter here (and they shout out First Draft, too!) At her dad’s house, Miranda read whatever was around, including such “dad” trope classics as David McCullough’s Truman. However, Robert Caro’s The Years of Lyndon Johnson: The Path to Power was a little too much for her as a young reader (but she loves the Caro books on Johnson now, which also includes Master of the Senate and Means of Ascent) Mysteries have always been a particular favorite for Miranda, especially—as a young reader—Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene and Agatha Christie (the Hercule Poirots, not the Miss Marple, please). But she was also very into Rebecca Wells’ Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood series. The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje (and the movie) were Miranda’s “Oh… sex!” moments… mine was Anne Rice Interview with a Vampire (and the movie) A famous creative writing course at Yale was “Daily Themes” Anne Fadiman (author of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down and The Wine Lover’s Daughter: A Memoir) is a creative nonfiction professor at Yale Poet Louise Gluck (author of Faithful and Virtuous Night: Poems) was Miranda’s Poetry teacher at Yale, and later in Miranda’s professional life Louise encouraged Miranda to write fiction Among the professors teaching at Washington University are more experimental writers like Kathryn Davis, author of Duplex: A Novel and The Silk Road: A Novel, and Danielle Dutton, author of Margaret the First: A Novel and Sprawl Dorothy, A Publishing Project is run by Danielle Dutton and her husband, fellow author and Washington University professor Martin Riker Rachel Cusk’s Outline trilogy (Outline, Transit, and Kudos) was a major inspiration for MIranda as she chose to break traditional storytelling mold by writing a series of conversations Miranda read Rings of Saturn by W.G. Sebald in her MFA program, and was interested in how Sebald experimented with the “slippage of the narrative ‘I’” Ben Marcus, author of Notes From the Fog: Stories, while he was a visiting professor at Washington University, encouraged Miranda to turn a series of short stories into a novel, which became Topics of Conversation I want to hear from you! First Draft Episode #221: Tahereh Mafi and Sarah Enni open the mailbag! Tahereh Mafi is the New York Times bestselling and National Book Award nominated author of the Shatter Me series, as well as A Very Large Expanse of Sea. The final book in her Shatter Me series, IMAGINE ME, hits shelves March 31, 2020. Watch this episode as a video on the First Draft podcast IGTV channel on Instagram! Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode I mention the previous mailbag episode (check out the podcast version here), which featured Zan Romanoff, author of A Song to Take the World Apart, Grace and the Fever, and the forthcoming Look (listen to her episode of First Draft here). I cite Morgan Matson as my hero for writing lengthy contemporary young adult novels, like the New York Times bestselling The Unexpected Everything and Save the Date (listen to Morgan’s First Draft interviews here and here)! I positively could not keep myself from mentioning The Four Tendencies again, Gretchen Rubin’s metric for analyzing how you (or others in your life) respond to expectations. Seriously, take the quiz already! Maurene Goo used Rilo Kiley lyrics before The Way You Make Me Feel in the epigraph because she got permission from the band A brief primer on how the Walt Disney Company has impacted IP law — though in 2024 that may be up, and Mickey Mouse could be in the public domain for the first time. Tahereh’s husband, Ransom Riggs—New York Times bestselling author of the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series (listen to his First Draft episode here - and heads up that the newest book in the series, The Conference of the Birds, is coming out January 14!)—has a very different writing style than she does. A marathon runner, rather than a sprinter. I reference one of the most famous phrases in the entire history of Supreme Court opinions: "I know it when I see it." The phrase appears in Justice Potter Stewart's concurring opinion in Jacobellis v. Ohio, a pornography case decided by the Court in 1964. Room by Emma Donoghue features a child narrator, but is decidedly not a children’s book. When Tahereh wrote Furthermore, she was shocked to learn from her editor that she had actually written a middle grade novel, rather than a young adult novel Suzanne Collins is returning to fiction in the spring with a new Hunger Games novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green brought on a surge of contemporary YA fiction Microsoft Word, Scrivener, and Highland 2 are all great options for writing software   I want to hear from you! Co-hosts Caitlin White and Eric Fulcher's fifth episode of State Of Grace is punctuated by a special guest — Harry Styles expert, Zan Romanoff. The final episode of 2019 centers around Harry Styles' second solo album Fine Line. Coming in at the tail end of the year, his new record functions both as the legacy album Harry needed, and another entry into his endless play with the tenets of sexuality. That conversation is almost more interesting than discussion of the pop influence on singles like "Watermelon Sugar," and "Adore You." Whether you loved his self-titled or hated it, there's something in this wide-ranging conversation for everyone.

Zan Romanoff is a writer of essays and fiction, mostly focused on food, feminism, television and books.  She graduated from Yale in 2009 with a B.A. in Literature, and now lives and works in Los Angeles.  She is the author of A Song to Take the World Apart, and her latest YA novel, Grace and the Fever. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/zan In this episode, Zan discusses: -How writing has played a part in her life since she was very young. -The unexpected result of one of her pieces ending up in The Paris Review. -How she tricked herself into writing her first novel. -The idea of wanting or needing permission from other people to call yourself a writer. -Talking about your creative passion with other people and wanting to protect it from scrutiny, jokes, or small talk. -The similarities and differences between writing and therapy. -How she wants to be honest with her young audience so that they trust her. -A long period of writer’s block after breaking up with her long-term boyfriend and thus losing her long-term reader/audience. -The process of writing her third novel. -How ideas often come to be in strange or long-winded ways that don’t make sense. -The notion of “coming down with a book.” -Giving yourself permission to spend time with yourself and be creative without thinking of those end goals. -How selling her first book didn’t solve any problems for her or make her doubt herself any less. -Trusting that your creative successes aren’t flukes and knowing that more successes will come again. Zan's Final Push will inspire you to GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY and give yourself permission!   Quotes: “What’s the thing that I wake up every day and do even though I don’t have to and even though nobody wants me to?  And the answer was writing.” “The only thing scarier than writing a novel is permanent unemployment, I would say.” “External permission is important but it only gets you so far.  Their permission opened a door and I had to sit with it for a long time.” “I do feel strongly that one of the major differences between me and people that haven’t written books is that I sat down and wrote it.” Links mentioned: Zan's piece in The Paris Review A Song to Take the World Apart by Zan Romanoff Grace and the Fever Connect with Zan: Website / Tumlbr / Instagram / Twitter On the next episode: David Zinn : Website / Instagram Share what you've created this week in the Facebook group!

A Song to Take the World Apart (Knopf) Hanging out with Chris was supposed to make Lorelei’s life normal. He’s cooler, he’s older, and he’s in a band, which means he can teach her about the music that was forbidden in her house growing up. Her grandmother told her when she was little that she was never allowed to sing, but listening to someone else do it is probably harmless—right? The more she listens, though, the more keenly she can feel her own voice locked up in her throat, and how she longs to use it. And as she starts exploring the power her grandmother never wanted her to discover, influencing Chris and everyone around her, the foundations of Lorelei’s life start to crumble. There’s a reason the women in her family never want to talk about what their voices can do. And a reason Lorelei can’t seem to stop herself from singing anyway. Praise for A Song to Take the World Apart "Zan Romanoff has created a hypnotic, lush coming of age story about what it means to have a voice.”—Emily Gould, author of Friendship"Family secrets, first love, and the elemental, raw power of music are all on display in Zan Romanoff's gorgeous novel. A Song To Take the World Apartgives us a heroine who's as fierce as she is vulnerable, and a story that's as page-turning as it is profound. An enchanting and beautiful debut." —Edan Lepucki, New York Times bestselling author of California"Zan Romanoff’s music-saturated debut will snare readers with its melodic, pop-punk hooks and elegant riffs on growing up, falling in love, and letting go." —Sarah McCarry, author of All Our Pretty Songs "With its dark sexiness, moody LA atmosphere, and fresh take on age-old legends, A Song to Take the World Apart will lure readers into its grip and keep them there.”—Bennett Madison, author of September Girls Zan Romanoff was born and raised in Los Angeles, fifteen miles (at least an hour in traffic) from the ocean. She received a BA in literature from Yale, then returned to LA, where she lives in an apartment that never has quite enough shelves for all of her books. Her work has appeared in publications that range from the Paris Review to the Toast and the Atlantic. This is her first novel.
