(And he said to them, "Peace to you.") In their panic and fright they thought they were seeing a ghost, but he said to them, "Why are you upset and why do such ideas cross your mind? Look at my hands and feet and see that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves that a ghost has no flesh and bones as I have." (As he said this, he showed his hands and feet.)In their joy they didn't dare believe and were still astonished. So he said to them, "Have you anything to eat?" and they gave him a piece of broiled fish. He took it and ate it before them. Then Jesus said to them, "Remember the words I spoke to you when I was still with you: Everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms had to be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he went on, "You see what was written: the Messiah had to suffer and on the third day rise from the dead. Then repentance and forgiveness in his name would be proclaimed to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. Now you shall be witnesses to this."The Gospel of the Lord.

While they were talking and wondering, Jesus came up and walked with them, but their eyes were held and they did not recognize him.He asked, "What is this you are talking about?" The two stood still, looking sad. Then one named Cleophas answered, "Why, it seems you are the only traveller in Jerusalem who doesn't know what has happened there these past few days." And he asked, "What is it?"They replied, "It is about Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet, you know, mighty in word and deed before God and the people. But the chief priests and our rulers sentenced him to death. They handed him over to be crucified. We had hoped that he would redeem Israel. It is now the third day since all this took place. It is true that some women of our group have disturbed us. When they went to the tomb at dawn, they did not find his body; they came to tell us that they had seen a vision of angels who told them that Jesus was alive. Some friends of our group went to the tomb and found everything just as the women had said, but they did not see him."He said to them, "How dull you are, how slow of understanding! You fail to believe the message of the prophets. Is it not written that the Christ should suffer all this and then enter his glory?" Then starting with Moses and going through the prophets, he explained to them everything in the Scriptures concerning himself. As they drew near the village they were heading for, Jesus made as if to go farther. But they prevailed upon him, "Stay with us, for night comes quickly. The day is now almost over." So he went in to stay with them. When they were at table, he took the bread, said a blessing, broke it and gave each a piece. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; but he vanished out of their sight. And they said to each other, "Were not our hearts filled with ardent yearning when he was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures?"They immediately set out and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and their companions gathered together. They were greeted by these words: "Yes, it is true, the Lord is risen! He has appeared to Simon!" Then the two told what had happened on the road and how Jesus made himself known when he broke bread with them. The Gospel of the Lord.

They said, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She answered, "Because they have taken my Lord and I don't know where they have put him."As she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize him. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?" She thought it was the gardener and answered him, "Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him."Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him, "Rabboni"-which means, Master. Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to me; you see I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them: I am ascending to my Father, who is your Father, to my God, who is your God."So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord, and this is what he said to me."The Gospel of the Lord.

This Week: In recent weeks, increased vaccinations of American adults has signaled a possible end to the pandemic and social distancing restrictions. Fox News Medical Contributor Dr. Marty Makary discusses what Americans need to know about the vaccines available to them, the change to the '6 ft. rule,' by the CDC, and the data behind the pause of the AstraZeneca vaccine in Europe.  This week, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas testified that the United States is "on pace to encounter more individuals on the southwest border than we have in the last 20 years." And as migrants have increased in recent months, so too has concern over unaccompanied minors entering the United States. This week, Jared spoke to former Acting DHS Secretary, Chad Wolf, about how the Trump administration addressed child migrants and Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-CA), about his recommendations for managing immigration going forward.  On Tuesday, President Biden kicked off his 'Help is Here' campaign, a tour designed to promote the president's American Rescue Plan legislation across the country. Jon Hilsenrath, Global Economics Editor for The Wall Street Journal, discusses how the economic impact of COVID-19 differs from past recessions, and how these initiatives could serve to repair the economy.  How many votes should it take to win on an issue? That's the question being weighed on Capitol Hill this week as Democrats consider putting an end to the Senate filibuster. Fox News Congressional Correspondent, Chad Pergram, discusses the problems with the "contemporary" filibuster as it stands, what it would take to change a precedent in the senate, and how removing it could impact Senate Republicans.

*Trigger warning: parts of this episode reference suicide, depression & domestic violence This week we're joined by Richie Hardcore. Richie is an educator, keynote speaker & activist, working in violence prevention, masculinities, mental health & wellness. So it's no surprise this convo is full of the real, the raw & everything inbetween. Our pain, suffering & mistakes can be our best teachers, especially if we look to find our own roll in what's gone wrong, vs looking to blame others & outside situations. We discuss the tough stuff, as well as celebrating lessons learned from mistakes made, opportunities missed & heartbreaks suffered. Because heart-breaks lead to hearts-"full", full of learning, love & hope. And all of that stuff, is the stuff of life. It's what underpins our growth, our humility & our humanness. It's how we deal with the tough in life that defines & shapes us, that will make or break us. We explore all this plus:Moving the needle on traditional definitions of MasculinityRole modelling as parents Relationships... until death do us part?!?... OR....Learning from the past & tools to support our growthAnchoring ourselves in the past vs shedding the ballast & forward growthLove is a verbTalking about & coping with death, feelings, grief & loss Our personal journeys are ALWAYS a work in progressOur stories leading to our purposeTaking ownership of our choicesWe all get things right, we all get things wrong, the power is in our learning & growth. And remember, part of that learning is compassion & forgiveness for ourselves & others travelling along the same road.To learn more about Richie & his work you can find him at:www. richiehardcore.comor follow him on insta @richiehardcore A shout out & a reminder around some of our support services in NZ:National Helpline: text 1737 for 24/7 support from a trained counsellorLifeline Aotearoa: on 0800 LIFELINE (0800 543 354) or text 'Help' to 4357 for 24/7 trained counsellor supportWomen's Refuge: crisis line: 0800 REFUGE or via info@refuge.org.nzSafe to Talk: Sexual Harm Helpline: 0800 044 334 or text 4334Immediate threat or harm contact emergency services on 111.If you are listening elsewhere around the world, it's always a good idea to be across the support available in your country so you know where to go if you need it or where you can direct friends & family if they need it.Big love Jax & Kim xxPS: We love hearing from you so keep it coming...www.unicornsandhandgrenades.comInsta and FB @unicornsandhandgrenades.lifeWe love hearing from you so keep it coming.

“I need help. Can you help me?” Aren’t these some of the hardest words to say? To admit we need help is hard enough, but to actually ask for help is even harder. We like to help ourselves, and we may like to help others, but we hate asking for help for ourselves. Sometimes we’ll go to enormous lengths to avoid admitting and asking for help. We may risk even our health and happiness rather than reach out for help. “I can do it myself” we insist. “I don’t need help” we protest, as everyone around us sees us sinking and failing. We may want to ask for help but we won’t ask for help. Why is H…E…L…P the hardest word to say and how do we learn to say it? Psalm 54 comes alongside to help us say “Help” and get help.Instagraphics.Website.iTunes.Spotify.

Are you looking to get more out of your time studying the Bible? Or maybe you're ready to finally start building a consistent, daily quiet time with the Lord? If that sounds like you, then Nicole would like to personally invite you to join her Help! My Bible is Alive FREE 30-Day Challenge, which kicks off on February 1st. To sign up, head over to https://nicoleunice.com/bible Nicole's book 'Help! My Bible Is Alive' is available here. In This Episode: Right about now, we start to realize just how difficult it is to change. If you're feeling that way, know that you have a Heavenly Father who promises to do the things he requires of us. If he's calling us to holiness, he's going to make a way for us to get there. If he's calling us to a new attitude or mind, he's going to make a way. We are active participants in the transformative work that the Spirit is doing in us. This week, we are diving deep into 2 Corinthians 5:17 and the amazing implications it has for us as believers. What does it mean to be a new creation? It means our eternal life starts now, not once we're in heaven. This Week's Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! In this episode, Nicole looks at what it means for us to take our thoughts captive and hold them up to the truth of God's Word. This Week's Key Verses: Ephesians 4:22-24: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” 2 Corinthians 10:5: “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Lamentations 3:22-23: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Follow Nicole: Her Site | Facebook | Instagram Episode Image Credit: Getty/nadia_bormotova

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 24, 2020 is: efficacious • ef-uh-KAY-shus • adjective : having the power to produce a desired effect Examples: "And as I mentioned, at the conference today, vaccines are close by. They're coming. I said 'Help is on the way,' which to me, I think, should motivate people, even more, to double down because pretty soon we're going to get a heck of a lot of help from a very efficacious vaccine." — Doctor Anthony Fauci, quoted on CNN, 19 Nov. 2020 "Facebook also employs fact-checking tags, but there are mixed opinions about whether these efforts are efficacious or cause users to double-down on their preconceptions." — Scott Nover, Adweek, 28 Apr. 2020 Did you know? Effective, effectual, and efficient are synonyms of efficacious, but each of these words has a slightly different connotation. Efficacious suggests possession of a special quality or virtue that makes it possible to achieve a result ("a detergent that is efficacious in removing grease"). Effective stresses the power to produce or the actual production of a particular effect ("an effective rebuttal"), while effectual suggests the accomplishment of a desired result, especially as viewed after the fact ("measures taken to reduce underage drinking have proved effectual"). The last synonym, efficient, implies an acting or potential for acting that avoids loss or waste of energy ("an efficient small car").
