RESILIENCE AND EFFECTIVENESS: EXAMINING ENDURANCE IN SENIOR MILITARY LEADERS

A Better Peace: The War Room Podcast

Despite the fact that so many of them make it look easy, the daily lives of senior U.S. military leaders can be incredibly demanding. Laura Weimer examined how senior leaders manage their well-being (or, at times, struggle to do so) amidst these demanding careers, and she's in the studio with host JP Clark to share her discoveries. Drawing from her research, Weimer highlighted the unique pressures of senior roles, including frequent relocations, intense scrutiny, and the weight of consequential decisions. She also discussed the inevitable challenges of mid-life, such as caring for aging parents and navigating evolving family dynamics, which compound work-related stress. Weimer's key takeaway? Developing a strong sense of identity, meaning, and purpose is essential for fostering resilience and sustaining leadership effectiveness. I don't know if necessarily it's the Army's job to help us figure out our identity. I do think it would be valuable for the Army to acknowledge the value of those conversations and maybe even prompt those conversations. Why Listen There are so many reasons to listen to today’s interview. First of all: Sports. Jake is the first person I’ve interviewed who has had a career in sports leadership. He is currently the Director of Player Development at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and we talk a lot about the NFL, coaching in college & professional football, and what this industry is like. Second: TV. Jake is a dynamic personality, and has been featured on  both the Discovery Channel and Scout Media Network. This interview offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like being on TV, and about extending one’s personal brand. Lastly: motivation. I found Jake and his story very uplifting - his perspective on failure, on pushing oneself, and on pursing a personal goal with relentless, are all informative and inspirational.   If you enjoy this episode, be sure to check out: BTU #74 - Nate Boyer: Army Green Beret to the NFL - https://beyondtheuniform.org/blog/btu-84-nate-boyer-army-green-beret-to-the-nfl?rq=nate%20boyer BTU #245 - Marine Corps to MMA & the UFC (Liz Carmouche) - https://beyondtheuniform.org/blog/btu-245-marine-corps-to-mma-the-ufc-liz-carmouche?rq=ufc BTU #329 - Active Duty Army to the NFL (Alejandro Villanueva) - https://beyondtheuniform.org/blog/195-active-duty-army-to-the-nfl-alejandro-villanueva-nxkba?rq=alejandro BTU #196 - Active Duty Army to UFC Contender and Discovery Channel Show Host (Tim Kennedy) - https://beyondtheuniform.org/blog/btu-196-active-duty-army-to-ufc-contender-and-discovery-channel-show-host-tim-kennedy?rq=ufc   About Jake Jake Zweig is the Director of Player Development at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, He started out at the Naval Academy, after which he served as a Surface Warfare Offer (qualifying in 6 months rather than the typical 18-24 months) before transferring to and becoming a Navy SEAL team officer for six years. 149: Resupply: Post, Buy, Sell Exclusively for the Military Community   A West Point graduate, Paul started ReSupply within the entrepreneurial program at the academy. Before ReSupply, Paul was a Division 1 lacrosse player, and CEO of a real estate development company (LITS Development). He is a native of Sudbury, MA.   Paul The Young Entrepreneur Paul had his first job at his father’s landscape company. He was just 10 years old when he started working in a mechanic shop. He fixed junk equipment from his dad’s company, and resold it on Craigslist. Paul was always into business from such an early age.   For 3 years, he worked on a sales equipment company that he started. His items included landscape equipment, golf carts, industrial equipment, and construction supplies. Afterwards, he worked for his uncle at a construction for 1 year.   He took after his dad and uncle’s entrepreneurial footsteps, and learned about the whole business process. Every year from 15 years old until he graduated from West Point, Paul worked on real estate where he would buy a complex, rent it out, and purchase another one.   Business at West Point Paul entered West Point as a lacrosse player. That’s where he found a new opportunity for selling. He couldn’t play and continue with his business at the same time, however. So, he decided to start a new one at the academy by selling textbooks.   He got another business opportunity by the end of his sophomore year, when he was invited to work for a fashion company. Paul spent about a year and a half in the fashion industry, until he went on an exchange opportunity at a Spanish academy.   ReSupply for Military Personnel By the time he returned to West Point, he took up a business course where he got the opportunity to compete for $25,000. He had a company, but didn’t know how to create an application that would allow him to run his business.   He sought for advice from a variety of people. Paul eventually won 1st place in the regionals, but still didn’t have the cash prize. So, he went on to compete at the state level.   Within 10 days, he launched his application which posted over $70,000 worth of value. It also generated almost 40,000 transactions, and spread across military installations. From that, Paul saw the need for similar stuffs in military equipment.   Scams teemed the marketplace, and there was no reliable platform available. That’s when ReSupply was formed— the safest place to buy, sell, and trade exclusively within your military community.   To hear about the safest military marketplace, download and listen to Resupply: Post, Buy, Sell Exclusively for the Military Community.
