How to assess the damage that the conspiring witnesses would have caused if they hadn't been determined to be conspiring: especially with monetary cases, such as the value of a ketubah, for example. But if he were to have died, he'd only have lost the value of the ketubah, without having to pay it out. So the risk of her having been widowed becomes part of the equation - including whether someone might have been willing to buy out the ketubah. Likewise, a case where the person they're testifying against has done the thing they're testifying about - and in that case, how much damage have they caused him? Also, a caveat about whether a loan is made with a promissory note - and how the default 30 days before asking for your money back kicks in only with a formal IOU. Plus, a concern about opening a collar on a shirt - and how that would be a violation of Shabbat, in contrast to removing the stopper from a wine barrel.

Hear from Prof. Aled Jones, Director of the Global Sustainability Institute at Anglia Ruskin University, as we dive into the role of models in shaping policy, and particularly their weaknesses.  Models are not neutral – they reflect the assumptions, values, and agendas of those that create and use them. Using the energy system as an example, models can (and have been) used to protect the status quo. In part, this is because many of the models are based on the notions of ‘equilibrium' and so they simply can't cope with major structural changes, such as the current energy transition. But it can be difficult for policy makers to switch towards models that are arguably more suited to the job. So, what can we do to supplement the models? One very effective approach is to adopt a structured process of expert elicitation, where we use the insights of experts to uncover vulnerabilities and risks. To bring it to life, we explore how this has worked in the case of the food system. We discuss: The role that models play in shaping energy policy, and how they can lead us astray; How expert judgment and insight can help address model blind spots; and Finally, what are the key lessons for risk professionals? Ecological collapse doesn't happen in a vacuum. Our global economy will also collapse by up to 50% before the end of this century if we continue as we are. That's the latest diagnosis by an interdisciplinary team who are sounding the alarm that current national climate policies are not enough to mitigate the damage to ecology and economy. The Institute of the Faculty of Actuaries and the University of Exeter today published Planetary Solvency which warns that widely used but deeply flawed assessments of the economic impact of climate change render policymakers blind to the immense risk created by current trajectories.Sandy Trust, actuary and co-author, joins me to explain how these flawed assessments play out in climate policies and an alternative methodology for calculating risk laid out in the report. This is Sandy's second time on the show, as in 2023 he joined me to explain how the world of finance underestimates the destruction climate change will cause on our economy after 1.5 degrees of warming. The update is no less frightening—especially, as Sandy reveals, given policy makers have little interest in heeding the warnings of experts.Planet: Critical is 100% independent and community-powered. In this Brand Story episode, recorded live at the HITRUST Collaborate Conference 2024, host Sean Martin sits down with Monica Shokrai, Head of Risk and Insurance for Google Cloud. The topic of conversation centers around cyber insurance, a crucial area impacting organizations across sectors.Monica Shokrai leads the charge in managing risk and procuring insurance for Google Cloud, a role that integrates closely with both the finance and security teams. She highlights the unique dual approach of her team, which not only secures coverage for Google but also strategizes on how to leverage insurance to assist Google Cloud customers in mitigating risks.A key point discussed is the interdisciplinary nature of cyber insurance. Traditionally managed by the finance or legal departments, Shokrai emphasizes its growing collaboration with cybersecurity teams. She notes that the standard organizational structure often sees a communication divide between finance and security departments. However, the evolving cyber insurance market is pushing these groups closer together, fostering a more integrated risk management strategy.Shokrai also shares insights on how Google approaches risk exposure and posture. By modeling risk in-house and leveraging an actuarial team, Google can quantify risks accurately and work closely with security teams. This model not only helps in securing better insurance terms but also aids in understanding and integrating security measures within the organization.Another significant point is Google's innovative approach to automating the cyber insurance process. Through their Risk Protection Program, Google allows security metrics to be shared with insurance partners like Allianz in Munich. This method simplifies the underwriting process and promotes a data-driven approach to evaluating cybersecurity risks, aligning insurers and security teams toward a common goal.Overall, the discussion underscores the importance of a cohesive strategy that bridges finance and cybersecurity through innovative risk management and insurance practices. With leaders like Monica Shokrai at the helm, Google Cloud is at the forefront of integrating these critical functions, ultimately benefiting both the company and its customers.Learn more about HITRUST: https://itspm.ag/hitrusi2itNote: This story contains promotional content. Learn more.Guest: Monica Shokrai, Head of Risk and Insurance, Google Cloud [@lifeatgoogle]On LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/monicashokrai/ResourcesSimplified Cyber Insurance for Organizations with a HITRUST Certification: https://itspm.ag/hitrusp5x6Learn more and catch more stories from HITRUST: https://www.itspmagazine.com/directory/hitrustLearn more about 7 Minutes on ITSPmagazine Short Brand Story Podcasts: https://www.itspmagazine.com/purchase-programsNewsletter Archive: https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/tune-into-the-latest-podcasts-7109347022809309184/Business Newsletter Signup: https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-business-updates-sign-upAre you interested in telling your story?https://www.itspmagazine.com/telling-your-story

Daphna believes that courage is essential in navigating the complexities and uncertainties leaders face today. She introduces the idea that true leadership starts from within, requiring self-awareness and the willingness to make bold moves, even in the face of fear. Daphna explains that leaders must embrace discomfort and push beyond their comfort zones to achieve growth for themselves and their organizations. In our conversation, we explore her "ABC" leadership model, which highlights three key areas: Awareness, Bold moves, and Communication, and explores each at two levels. Daphna emphasizes that understanding ourselves is the foundation of courageous leadership. Leaders must also make bold decisions, even in uncertain circumstances, and communicate effectively to create strong connections with their teams. Through practical advice and personal insights, Daphna encourages leaders to embrace vulnerability, build deeper relationships, and continually grow by staying curious and open to learning. Key Takeaways:1. Self-Awareness is Key: Leadership starts from within. Knowing your strengths, weaknesses, and motivations allows you to lead more effectively.2. In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about personal empowerment. If we let impostor syndrome control our personal narratives, we may be giving away our power in ways we don't realize. My guest this week, Marjorie Ngwenya, is a board member, coach, consultant, speaker and author of the book, Empowered Evolution. Here we talk about Marjorie's early career experiences, having had to leave university in London due to the crash of the Zimbabwe dollar. This led her to a career at Deloitte where she struggled with impostor syndrome as she compared herself to those around her. Over time, Marjorie advanced her career, eventually becoming President of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, UK as the first person of color and youngest person to hold office in the organization's history. Marjorie and I also talk here about the importance of representation, how to stay in alignment with our values and how to make hard choices to stay empowered.About My GuestMarjorie Ngwenya serves as a board member in the financial services and not for profit sectors. She is an external member of the Prudential Regulation Committee of the Bank of England. She is also an adviser and consultant to financial and educational institutions. She is a Past President of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, UK. Marjorie was the first person of colour to hold office in the organisation's history – and also the youngest. On its release, Marjorie's book ‘Empowered Evolution' reached #1 on Amazon's Knowledge Capital list.
