Every day, hundreds of thousands of people move through the Gare du Nord train station in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, the largest train station in Europe. Julie Kleinman's Adventure Capital: Migration and the Making of an African Hub in Paris (University of California Press, 2019) delves into the contemporary life of the station, and especially the lives and social world of the West African migrants who congregate there daily. The project makes connections between twentieth and twenty-first-century stories and politics and the longer-term of the Gare du Nord as a transportation hub and a crossroads for French histories of urban infrastructure, labour and class, mobility, racial inequality, and identity (African and French primarily in this case). Drawing on a decade of archival and fieldwork that included the investigation of state and police archives, an internship at the Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF-the French national railway company), as well as in-depth interviews and interactions with a group of (mostly male) West African migrants who spend time regularly at the station, the book is a fascinating exploration of the community and life strategies of migrants in and around this practical and social hub where issues of labour, employment, surveillance, violence, resistance, family, and friendship meet. Informed by a deep knowledge of the broader historical and contemporary culture and politics of France and empire, the book stays close to the perspectives, stories, and analyses of the West African "adventurers" at the heart of the project. In doing so, it also offers a compelling and illuminating view of the Gare du Nord and all that its busy spaces lead to and from within and beyond the borders of France. Roxanne Panchasi is an Associate Professor of History at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada who specializes in twentieth and twenty-first century France and its empire. Pokhara is considered the tourism capital of Nepal. There are countless treks that begin or end in Pokhara including the great Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, Upper Mustang and Poonhill. Situated on beautiful Phewa Lake this is a much more relaxing experience than the capital of Kathmandu. In this episode I revisit the Peace Pagoda with views of some of the highest mountains on the planet. Listen to the drums and faint chanting from the monks during this episode, a treat when visiting the Peace Pagoda, one of two located in Nepal. I have spent a few days on two occasions in Pokhara and could easily find things to do on a 3rd visit that I've never experienced. It's a different side of Nepal and although there isn't as much cultural sites as you'll find in Kathmandu there are plenty of hills to walk and serene places to visit that will stimulate you in a very different way. It's another content rich show with two parts: Part 1 insightful conversation with another special guest Dad Part 2 the debrief with professional feedback provided by one of our in-house specialists Part 1: Location, location, location. Living in Squamish, Canada's climbing mecca in the Sea to Sky corridor, just north of Vancouver, means that Jeremy gets to climb 3 or 4 times a week. Not bad for a full time Dad that works as a teacher. Nestled between the Coastal Mountains and the Pacific Ocean with easy access to endless mountain and ocean pursuits, this is prime real estate which means a busy life to pay the bills and keep up with the family while Jeremy and his wife-ish person Mandoline, work conflicting schedules. Sometimes. As more people escape the city in search of a better quality of life, the lure of the mountains means a sea of newcomers which has increased the cost of living. Jeremy reflects on the question of affordability and he expresses gratitude that they can juggle the life they have to create a great experience for their young daughter while also pursuing their passions. Topics include: falling into parenting without a plan; learning to let go of expectations; balancing family life with a busy schedule; affordability as the cost of living increases; sleeping as a family (the dog is invited too); early morning training rituals; amongst other things... Part 2: An educated discussion with Clinical Social Worker Catherine Williams about the essential topic for parents with babies and young children - sleep! Please enjoy! Join Sarah and me as we talk about the adventures you can have in New Zealand. We'll span from Auckland and the North Island to Queenstown and the South Island. We'll introduce you to Huka Lodge, Cape Kidnappers, and Eichardt's Private Hotel and treehouses, mirrored pods, and eco-lodges, some so remote you can only get to by helicopter. Have you ever heard of Hole in the Rock? You'll learn why I've added it to my personal bucket list. No conversation about New Zealand would be complete without touching on active adventures like cliff walks, swimming with dolphins, mountain biking, and running in zorbs (your teens will likely add zorbs to their list!). On today’s episode we talk about disrupting the funding and investment of women owned businesses with Investor and Serial Entrepreneur Shelley Kuipers! I met Shelley this summer at a fabulous conference on innovation and investment in Calgary called Inventures and her role on a women’s investment panel impressed me, so I wanted to bring her message, wisdom and knowledge to our Fempower community! Shelley Kuipers is building the world she wants to live in. As an activist in business, entrepreneurship and investment, she is hell bent on defeating the status quo one project at a time, and replacing it with options that are more equitable, feminist, corporately and ecologically sustainable; revolutionary options that drive greater value for both business and consumer. She co-founded IOVIA in 2015 after previously founding Chaordix, Stormworks and Adventure Capital. She is also co-founder of feminist investment collective, The51 and sustainable direct to consumer clothing brand Harris Kuipers, all in addition to championing the entrepreneurs she has chosen to invest in. Shelley loves to travel for business and adventure but also questions the sustainability of it all. When on a break Shelley finds herself revelling in nature with family and friends, and with the odd glass of cider at her home on Salt Spring Island, Canada. She divides her time between the west coast and Calgary, Canada and right this minute is probably dreaming up ways to realize the possibilities. Enjoy this episode, it’s magical! Laos' Adventure Capital-Vang Vieng-Exploring It's BackRoads/Blue Lagoon Vang Vieng has come a long way since it's days as party central in Southeast Asia. Once the home of major tube parties, cheap booze and readily available drugs it has started to transform into an adventure capital. After a few unfortunate deaths/drownings in the Nam Song River the police dropped in and shut down alot of the river bars. You can still find some parties and tubing here but it's not like the old days. It's a pretty chill place and you are definitely exposed to more of the everyday simple life of Laos. There's much to appreciate here from kayaking the river, exploring the caves, and grabbing a motorbike to head for the backroads. Motorbike rental places are easy to find in Vang Vieng and most will help you with directions and even give you a map so you can explore the caves and lagoons of the region. Most caves have a small admission fee, and will most often loan you a lantern. Some will have guides you can hire as well. The Blue Lagoon is a place most hear about and want to visit when they arrive in Vang Vieng. You can catch a tuk tuk out to the Blue Lagoon, or rent mountain bikes, but it will be a hot a sweaty ride out there, forget about walking-the heat is too much for most. Two or three days in Vang Vieng should be enough to capture the essence of rural life and get in an adventure activity or two-some great rock climbing here to check out. Everything here from cheap guesthouses to lux settings on the river. Vang Vieng is an easy 3-3.5 hour bus ride from Vientienne. It's a great way to split up a much longer ride from the capital to Luang Prabang as well!Hope you enjoy the video! I also have an audio podcast in the iTunes Store where I chat about travel in Asia and invite followers and guests on the show with advice and to share travel experiences. In this episode, you will learn about managing a destination through all four season from Drew Broderick. No day is ever the same for Drew Broderick, director of sales and marketing for Bristol Mountain and Roseland Adventure Attractions, which is comprised of Bristol Mountain Ski Area and Fall Sky Rides, Bristol Mountain Aerial Adventures and Zip Line Canopy Tours, Roseland Waterpark, and Roseland Wake Park. Her enthusiasm for tourism and attractions began with a summer college internship at Walt Disney World. She spent ten years in upper management in the hotel industry and later as the owner of a successful meeting planning and consulting firm, On-Site Meeting Solutions in Dallas, Texas, before relocating to Upstate New York. One of Drew’s most memorable events was supervising the VIP hospitality venues for Anheuser-Busch during the 1994 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. She also traveled the globe as a consultant for an international training company. Some of those places included: Dubai, Singapore, Brazil, Australia, Chile, Bermuda, Spain, and Poland to name a few. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management with a Minor in Marketing from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. Drew has been with Bristol Mountain and Roseland Adventure Attractions for eight years and serves as the media liaison as well as handles all advertising, marketing initiatives, photography and video assets, social media for multiple attractions, and oversees the group sales efforts. Currently, Bristol Mountain has six former Freestyle athletes competing on the US Ski Team and with the next winter Olympics taking place in February of 2018, Bristol Mountain hopes to see one or more of these athletes competing for Team USA. One of Drew’s passions is getting people involved in outdoor activities such as skiing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, zip lining, and climbing the courses in the aerial adventure park. Drew says, “There is so much to do right here that we’ve adopted the tagline of Adventure Capital of the Finger Lakes.” A transcript of this episode is available here: destinationontheleft.com/drew-broderick
