The BBC revealed this week that more than half the buildings in the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed since Israel launched its retaliation for the Hamas attacks in October. The war has left tens of thousands dead or injured…and an estimated 1.7 million people have been displaced. There are shortages of water, food, and medicines. This week, three US doctors who recently left Gaza share their experiences of working in a hospital in the territory with host James Reynolds. “Blast waves hit the operating room, you can see your metal table with all the instruments rattle, doors slam, the plaster falling off the walls,” Dr Chandra Hassan, from international humanitarian NGO MedGlobal tells us. “You learn to live with that, and you sleep out of exhaustion.”The escalation of the military activities left many people with no choice but to flee their homes. 35-year-old Layan and her two daughters, 12-year-old Sama and Elya, who's 8, had to take a long – and at times dangerous – journey from Gaza City to Khan Younis in the south. They have since managed to cross the border into Egypt, where they are now living safely in Cairo. They share their experiences of leaving the Gaza Strip and Layan tells us why she feels guilty leaving the rest of her family behind. A Boffin Media production in partnership with the BBC OS team.

In February, Ukrainecast collaborated with BBC Newsnight on a live show to mark the first anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. One of the guests was Elya, who was just 17 when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. After two weeks hiding with her family in their building's basement, a missile strike on another floor prompted her to flee. She reunites with Victoria and Vitaly to discuss what has happened to her since. And the BBC's Sofia Bettiza discusses Ukraine's chances of joining the EU. Today's episode is presented by Victoria Derbyshire and Vitaly Shevchenko. The producers were Keiligh Baker, Arsenii Sokolov and Ivana Davidovic. The technical producer was Philip Bull. The series producer is Tim Walklate. The senior news editor is Sam Bonham. Email Ukrainecast@bbc.co.uk with your questions and comments. China's Defaulted War Debts We've long viewed China's defaulted debt from the first half of the twentieth century through the lens of the communist government refusing to pay back the defaulted debts of Imperial China. But historian Elya Zhang's wonderful work on China's debts documents how the story is much more complex and, in particular, how the Imperial debt is but a sliver of the Chinese sovereign borrowing that was subsequently defaulted on. Much of it, it turns out, was war related borrowing of various types done during the 1938-49 period. And the stories underlying what happened are, as Elya tells us, are fascinating. Elya describes how she took her eight-year-old niece out of Ukraine after a missile hit her home in Kharkiv last year. Elya was just 17 at the time. Now she's returned to visit her parents and says: “It's the most times I've seen my father cry.” The BBC's Francis Scarr reports on the assassination of a pro-war blogger in St Petersburg, a defection and suggestions that Ukraine may be willing to negotiate over Crimea. And Ivan Chuvilyaev explains how the group Idite Lesom (Go By the Forest) is helping Russians afraid of mobilisation. And finally Vitaly tells Victoria about the Ukrainian origins of the humble Easter egg. Today's episode is presented by Victoria Derbyshire and Vitaly Shevchenko. The producers were Arsenii Sokolov and Luke Radcliff. The technical producer was Jonny Hall. The series producer is Fiona Leach. The assistant editor is Alison Gee and the editor is Sam Bonham. Rav Elya Meir Sorotzkin zt”l became a rosh yeshivah at a very young age and, with “blood, sweat and tears,” as he would often say, built his yeshiva into a premier institution, and, more importantly, built individual talmidim. Because he personally went through the painstaking process of self-discovery and growth, he was able to identify with the struggles and triumphs of his talmidim in a way that few could. This Inside ArtScroll interview features a conversation with a close talmid, Rabbi Tzvi Uhr, who describes the lifelong impact that his rebbi had on his talmidim, giving us an appreciation for how every page in the biography of Rav Elya Meir Sorotzkin will inspire and uplift us. Jennasis Speaks: The Transformative Power of Women's Stories
Elya Starek always had a feeling of worry in her life, but nothing that she couldn't manage on her own. The global pandemic in 2020 was the start to a downward spiral for her, and she eventually realized that professional help and medication was needed to feel “normal” again. However, it wasn't until she began feeling better that she realized just how bad her anxiety had been all along. This week, Elya shares her mental health struggles in hopes of showing others that there is no shame in getting help.

It was a terrible period, because my caring mother would not let me rest. She examined me every day and observed the changes in my body, and I was so uncomfortable, and I really wanted to be left alone, but it didn't happen... . . The History Behind Lawsuits Over Old Chinese and Russian Sovereign Debt Lawsuits to enforce long-defaulted Chinese bonds (by an engineer in Alabama) and Russian bonds (by the wonderfully-named Carl Marks & Co.) have a storied place in sovereign debt lore. They sit at the intersection of history, politics, and economics, mixed with a bit of law a whole lot of international intrigue. We talk with historian/geographer Elya Zhang of the University of Rochester about the back story behind these courtroom dramas and the broader history of modern Chinese sovereign debt. Today with us on the Incite Change Podcast, Coach Mauro sits down with colleague and family friend Elya. Elya who is now a mom of 3, is an example to many as she has been able to overcome life's hurdles and continues to be consistent in her fitness journey. Having experienced health concerns, she decided to take a serious approach to make health and fitness a part of her lifestyle as opposed to just “fitting” it in. She takes us through her fitness journey which started small and was not only all about working out, but also learning and understanding why tracking and eating right is important. She breaks down having that healthy balance of fitness and family life and her experience of still being able to safely workout when expecting her third child. Like every mother trying to balance it all, she speaks about the importance of becoming mentally ready and understanding that getting back to your pre-pregnancy body will take time and patience. And understanding that you not only need to be good and healthy for yourself, but also for your kids and family. Elya's closing advice is to find support with your fitness journey whether through your family or your coach as that will help you to be successful. Такие треки как "In And Out Of Love", "Orbion", "Mirage", "Intense", "I'll Listen", "J'ai Envie De Toi" остались в памяти надолго! TRANCE." One of Richmond's newest food brands came to life after a dark period for Danny Sterling. It was 2016 and the chef was shocked to learn he had cancer. The surgeries and recovery that followed (along with the support of his wife) convinced Danny to take better care of himself by making better food choices. "It doesn't hurt to look at holistic health and see how food can play a role in that. And it's changed my life dramatically," Sterling said. "I feel better. There's been a lot of just a lot of benefit that's come from really focusing on what I'm putting in my body." With that in mind, Sterling started ELYA after he moved to Richmond. ELYA, which stands for Eat Life Your Ancestors, provides meals-to-go placed in refrigerators around Richmond. While popular menu items include a beef burrito bowl and chicken, bacon, ranch bowl, Sterling said ELYA offers diners a healthy, convenient alternative to fast food. "The way that we look at [healthy food] is to make sure it comes from a good quality source," he said touting food purveyors such as Joyce Farms for chicken and Autumn Olive Farms for bacon. Programmation musicale : ► L'hiver indien - Baloji ► City of Stars - Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Rav Elya Baruch Finkel (1947-2008) was one of the most memorable personalities of the Mir in Yerushalayim. From the clarity of his shiurim, the warmth he exuded to all who knew him, to his phenomenal sense of humor that marked every interaction with him. He was both an aristocrat in his familial background, yet accessible and down to earth. Able to impart sage advice to those who sought it, while also able to enjoy a leisurely conversation regaling his listeners with stories from the past. A short compendium of personal recollections of this great man. My very first guest is none other than my youngest child, Ms. Sydney Ellen Elya! She was SUPER excited to do it, too. I think she was more interested in listening to her own voice through headphones, to be honest... just like her old man. Ha ha! In this interview, I talk to Sydney about school, memories, her family, her friends, and her hopes and dreams. I couldn't have asked for a better "guinea pig" for my first shot. Thanks, Syd!

Arianna and Gabrielle interview Dr. Carolyn Elya on how microbes hijack insect nervous systems to control them. Dr. Elya studies a fungus that infects fruit flies, invading their nervous system and eating them from the inside out. The fungus controls the fly nervous system to climb to a high point in the forest in order to better spread the fungus spores to infect new flies and insects. We speak to Dr. Elya about the complex relationships of the organisms and the impact of climate change on the forest ecosystems. Dr. Elya is a postdoc at Harvard University, a was a researcher at HHMI, she received a Ph.D from the Molecular and Cell Biology department at UC Berkeley in May 2017.
A writing teacher told her that everyone is an expert at something. That is how this story came to be. She says you can't give what you didn't receive. Elya Braden, former corporate lawyer and entrepreneur, is now a widely-published poet and collage artist. Her writing and art are expressions of her healing/spiritual journey that she shares to connect with others and open their hearts. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and her cat. You can find her on the web at www.elyabraden.com. Through the S.H.E. Fund (http://www.shecollegefund.org/), Elya is now sponsoring one of the girls of the Tasaru Rescue Center - a refuge in Kenya for Masai girls escaping FGM and childhood marriage. If it's not 1 Thing, explores the topic of 'mother' from every angle imaginable and some you have not thought of. Each week, hosts Katie Mitchell and Lupe Padilla Mitchell share a new story and have great conversations with the writers, many of whom are in fact not writers by trade. We have excerpts from best selling novels, memoirs, poetry award winners, songwriters, stay at home moms, insurance brokers, teachers, actors, college students and beyond. Some famous. Some not at all. But they all have incredible tales to tell. Story is in our DNA. It's how we make sense of the world around us. We have so much to teach each other.
