A discussion of Jeff Vandermeer's Authority, the second book in the Southern Reach Trilogy. The spiders find that it strikes an uncommonly good balance between that which is understood readily and that which can't be understood at all.

Today on the 5: Back in July I reviewed Annihilation, the first novel in the Southern Reach Trilogy. I've now finished the other two books, and I have a bit of a unique review of the trilogy.
Jordan talks with Jeff VanderMeer about the process of re-wilding his backyard, his initial obsession with uprooting air potatoes, learning to see more of the natural world, and where his fiction is headed next. Gen and Jette talk about Coach House Books' 2020 fall releases. First, The Pine Islands by Marion Poschmann, translated by Jen Calleja. The reader travels with Gilbert on a pilgrimage through Japan. Then, The Imago Stage by Karoline Georges, translated by Rhonda Mullins, which follows the narrator as she negotiates between her virtual world and the real world. And lastly, Fauna by Christiane Vadnais, translated by Pablo Strauss. This work connects a series of stories about a climate-changed world. We love working with Coach House Books and had such a great time discussing these new fall releases! Show Notes: Aokigahara Jukai forest in Japan is more commonly known as the suicide forest. The Complete Manual of Suicide is in fact a real book. This is not a recommendation. You can read about more about Basho's travels in The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Other Travel Sketches. The 2019 Canada Reads selection translated by Rhonda Mullins is Suzanne by Anais Barbeau-Lavalette. Science fiction has always been an outlet for our greatest anxieties. This week, we delve into how the genre is exploring the reality of climate change. Plus: new words to describe the indescribable. 1. Jeff VanderMeer @jeffvandermeer, author of the Southern Reach Trilogy and Borne, on writing about the relationships between people and nature. 2. Claire Vaye Watkins @clairevaye talks about Gold Fame Citrus, her work of speculative fiction in which an enormous sand dune threatens to engulf the southwest. 3. Kim Stanley Robinson discusses his latest work, New York 2140. The seas have risen 50 feet and lower Manhattan is submerged. And yet, there's hope. 4. British writer Robert Macfarlane @RobGMacfarlane on new language for our changing world. **The recording of huia imitation heard in this segment was performed in 1949 by Henare Hāmana and narrated by Robert A. L. Batley at Radio Station 2YA in Aotearoa New Zealand. Julianne Lutz Warren, a fellow at the Center for Humans and Nature, has written about it in "Hopes Echo" available here. Her work was also described by Macfarlane in his piece "Generation Anthropocene.” Throughout the show: listeners offer their own new vocabulary for the Anthropocene era. Comfort movie month continues with a trip back to 1995. It was an incredible year for cinema that gave us such classics as Before Sunrise, Casino, City of Lost Children, Heat, and most importantly, A Goofy Movie. This movie has been near and dear to my heart since it was first released. From the heart-warming father and son story at its heart, to the incredible soundtrack, to Pauly Shore showing up to build towers out of squeezy cheese. It’s a classic from start to finish and never fails to put a smile on my face when I’m feeling low. Deep Space Nine does a lot of things right with episode 16, The Forsaken, and things wrap up with the second book in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy, Authority. Remember to like, follow, subscribe, wash your hands, and be excellent to each other. Enjoy
(From February 2014) Jeff VanderMeer reads from his novel Annihilation, part one of the Southern Reach Trilogy, published in 2014 by FSG. (Includes a very interesting snapshot of City Lights c. 2014 with Peter Maravelis's intro of upcoming readings at the time..!).
Welcome to the Stace and Barry kinda but not really Halloween special. In the red corner Stace goes off to see Ninja Sex Party and checks out the Watchmen TV series. In the blue corner Barry goes back to school with the Stormhaven Techs: Tales from the Prep Room comic. The dynamic duo also unveil a new segment 'Behind the Book Corner with Stace'. The only small problem is Stace has no idea what the segment is about before she tackles 'Authority' the second book in the Southern Reach Trilogy. So put down that egg and bacon sarnie and listen in!

With the help of his father (special guest star Laurence Fishburne), Dre begins to try to create a sense of ethnic identity for the members of his family that will allow them to honour their background while preparing them to embrace the future.Cable’s Finest: InsecureModern-day black women might be described as strong and confident; in other words, just the opposite of Issa and Molly. As the best friends deal with their own real-life flaws, their insecurities come to the fore as together they cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. Created by co-star Issa Rae and writer/comic Larry Wilmore ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart"), the comedy series looks at the friendship of two black women in a unique, authentic way. It features the music of both indie and established artists of color, and touches on a variety of social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.True Detective (S3)Season 3 of "True Detective" plays out in three separate time periods, telling the story of the 1980 disappearance of a young Arkansas boy and his sister, and a mystery that deepens over decades. Oscar winner Mahershala Ali stars as state police detective Wayne Hays, who recalls the days and weeks immediately following the crime, as well as developments in 1990, when he and his former partner, Roland West, were subpoenaed after a major break in the case. What started as a routine investigation becomes a long journey to dissect and make sense of the crime.Gen Z’s Take: Grown-ish The Johnson family's eldest daughter is taking her first steps into the real world as she heads off to college. "Grown-ish" explores the first trappings of adulthood, and Zoey must navigate through the trials and tribulations of these momentous steps. Zoey discovers that once she leaves the nest, things do not always go her way. The series features "that in between place where you're not quite an adult but facing grown world problems for the first time," Kenya Barris, the show's creator and executive producer, said. The True Crime Drama: American Crime Story: The People vs. OJThis dramatization traces the twists and turns of O.J. Simpson's murder trial, examining behind-the-scenes gambits on both sides of the court. The Guilty Pleasure: EmpireHip-hop artist and CEO of Empire Entertainment, Lucious Lyon, has always ruled unchallenged, but a medical diagnosis predicts he will be incapacitated in three years, which prompts the sharks to circle. Without further damaging his family, he must decide which of his three sons will take over. His favorite, young Hakeem, is a gifted musician but values fame over hard work. Middle son, Jamal, is talented and shy but gay -- embarrassing to Lyon. The oldest, Andre, is business-minded but lacks charisma. The reappearance of Cookie, his ex-wife, complicates things; she says he owes her for taking the fall for the drug-running that financed his early career.Scandal"Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes is the creative mind behind this ABC drama. Olivia's staff includes Quinn Perkins, who has a complicated history, and hacker extraordinaire Huck. As she moves forward it becomes clear that, while her staffers may specialize in cleaning up the lives of other people, they can't seem to do the same for themselves. The Reboot: She’s Gotta Have ItBeautiful Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns) can't decide what kind of man she wants to date, so she decides to date three at the same time. The first is Greer Childs (John Canada Terrell), a rich, handsome narcissist. Then there's Jamie Overstreet (Tommy Redmond Hicks), a stable, overprotective alpha male. Finally, there's Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee), a timid geek with a heart of gold. Unfortunately, while each suitor has his virtues, Darling just can't seem to make up her mind. The Throwback: A Different WorldDenise Huxtable is in "a different world" -- predominantly black Hillman College -- in this popular "Cosby Show" spinoff. This is the premiere episode of our 5th season, and we're shimmering with excitement! Spending four months away from all of you is just too long, so here we are! We're back with a movie that *ucked us up, and we sure hope it *ucked you up, too! Chicago actor & playwright Christopher M. Walsh stopped by to be our voice of authority. Be amazed as he tries to answer about 20 of the top 300 questions this movie left us with. Annihilation was just the first book in a three book series called the Southern Reach Trilogy written by Jeff VanderMeer, and Chris has read them all. The series belongs to a specific sub-genre called 'strange fiction', and guess what! The book was a whole lot stranger than the movie! So.. you know how The Shining (1980) is referred to as a great film and a terrible adaptation? SPOILER: Chris explains why Annihilation also fell victim to that same curse in the best possible way! We get our old friend and English professor Stuart Randolph on the phone, and our good friend and fellow Chicago filmmaker Joey Fandel stops by as well! So come for the shiny shimmer and stay for the disgusting body horror that's sure to follow. Our 5th season is gonna be killer, so thanks for your patience and welcome back to Movie Show Theater! https://www.instagram.com/movieshowtheater/ https://www.facebook.com/movieshowtheatre/ - intro and outro music courtesy of PUNCH DECK - Annihilation score excerpts courtesy of BEN SALISBURY & GEOFF BARROW
Amanda and Jenn discuss novels about the Balkans, contemporary YA, really weird books, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Book Riot Insiders, Legendary by Stephanie Garber, and Megabat by Anna Humphrey, illustrated by Kass Reich. Questions 1. Hello Ladies! My friend and I are going on a trip to the Balkans (Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia, Belgravia, Macedonia and Albania). We love historical fiction or narrative non-fiction and would love to read more about these countries before visiting. Thanks! -Britany 2. Looking for an interesting essay collection for the Read Harder Challenge! -Rachael 3. Hello from Canada! I love your show :) I'm looking for book recommendations for my sister. She's in her late 20s, and has described herself as "enjoys reading, not books shopping, but only likes weird stuff". She seems to like John Wyndham books...Books that are weird, creepy, not very sci fi, and not very magical- something more in between. I suggested the Library at Mount Char (one of the weirdest I own), but she was turned off due to the title and perhaps my poor pitch. She will pick up Dark Matter, and the Southern Reach Trilogy due to my persistence. but I'm not sure they are right for her. Please help! -Dominique 4. Hi ladies! I just finished Retta’s So Close To Being The Sh*t Y’all Don’t Even Know and loved it. I was hoping you could recommend something similar. I loved the behind the scenes stories and comedic tone. I’ve also read and enjoyed books by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling and Anna Kendrick. -Whitney 5. Hello ladies!! Love your podcast and look forward to listening to it every week at work!! I love your passion for books and helping people find new books!! Anyways, I am in the process of pursuing my dream and writing my first novel, however I would love your thoughts on books for creativity and writing. I've read Big Magic, and Stephen King's novel on writing, so anything that could help with encouragement and motivation would be lovely! Open to nonfiction and fiction! Thank you so much!! -Kaitlin 6. Hello, I love to listening to YA novels and could use some new recommendations. I have recently listened to and enjoyed When Dimple Met Rishi, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, And What I Saw and How I Lied. I also really enjoy Rainbow Rowell. Eleanor & Park is the only one I have left to read and it is currently on my to be listened to list, as well as Dumplin'. Thanks! -Megan 7. Thanks to Read Harder, I've read 2 books this year - Pachinko and Do Not Say We Have Nothing - which really made me realize that I know very little about 20th century East Asian history. I'm looking for nonfiction to give me some more grounding in the topic. It doesn't have to specifically be about the Japanese colonization of Korea or the Cultural Revolution, I'd be happy with anything compelling and readable about 19th or 20th century China, Japan, Korea, or even southeast Asia. Thanks! -Laura Books Discussed Girl At War by Sara Novic The Tiger’s Wife by Téa Obreht The Fire This Time edited by Jesmyn Ward How to Write an Autobiographical Novel by Alexander Chee (tw: child abuse) The Beauty by Aliya Whiteley The Book of M by Peng Shepherd This is Just My Face by Gabourey Sidibe We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union (tw: rape) Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott 13 Ways of Looking at the Novel by Jane Smiley (rec’d by Attica Locke on Recommended) Valley Girls by Sarah Nicole Lemon Anger is a Gift, narrated and written by Mark Oshiro Wild Swans by Jung Chang The Court Dancer by Kyung-Sook Shin

Amanda and Jenn discuss nature and magic, satire, the Scottish Highlands, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Rebel with a Cupcake by Anna Mainwaring from KCP Loft and The Romance Reader’s Guide to Life by Sharon Pywell. Questions 1. Hi ladies, I love your podcast and was hoping you could help me to find a book for my holiday. I'm going to spend four days in a cabin in the North Yorkshire moors. And I would like to find an atmospheric book where nature and magic feature prominently. However most of the books that I immediately thought of, uprooted by Naomi Novik, the bear and the nightingale by Katherine Arden, and wintersong by S. Jae Jones, I have already read and I'd like to read something new. I love romance, magical realism, fantasy, and fairytale retellings, and I look forward to hearing what you might suggest. Thanks, --Emily 2. Hello ladies! I am writing to you in desperate need of new authors. I am a die hard fan of Chris Bohjalian and love thought provoking fiction novels. One of the things I love about Bohjalian is that he writes about a number of subjects and his endings are very unexpected. Do you know of any similar authors in style?? Thanks --Sandra 3. Hey Amanda and Jenn, I am heading to Scotland In April for my 30th birthday. I would like some suggestions on either Historical Fiction or Non-Fiction books about Scotland. I love the Outlander series so anything about the highlands would be great. I also love reading about the history of castles. Thanks --Brittney 4. My dad and I are going on a 13 hour road trip and I'm looking for an audiobook in the fantasy genre, which we both love, with social justice themes and/or characters who cope with loss without too much angst. He loves stories in all forms, but hasn't read in many years. He's a workaholic and a hermit, but a hopeless romantic and he leans toward well-known authors like Terry Brooks, Scott Card, and Tolkien. I lean more toward magical realism. My favorites recently have been Angel of Losses and The Golem and the Jinni. Thanks! --Courtney 5. My husband wasn't much of a reader until he found Kurt Vonnegut, and then he read everything the man ever wrote. Now he's at a loss on what to read next and none of my recommendations appeal to him. What can I suggest that will fill that place in his reading life? I know I don't even have to ask with y'all, but POC and women authors would be great! Thanks! --Emily 6. Hello! I'm going off to grad school in the fall in evolutionary biology. I am looking for books that explore science and laboratory life, fiction or nonfiction. I enjoy reading about realistic depictions of the scientific mentality, the interpersonal relationships involved in working and living in the lab and field, and uncovering scientific breakthroughs, even when it breaks bad. If it does go well, though, even better, particularly since I read a lot of science fiction and the science always seems to go wrong. I'm not concerned with scientific accuracy. Examples of books like this I've read and enjoyed are Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, the Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer, and The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanigahara. If I could get recommendations by this summer so I could have time before grad school to read them before I'm actually trapped in a lab, that would be great. Thank you! --Ellie 7. Hi Jenn and Amanda, I’ve been a fan of your show for awhile and you ladies have definitely made my TBR list grow! I am a high school English teacher in a small southern town where I do not fit in at all being the northern hippie teacher I am. I’m struggling to find novels of “literary merit” that will be approved by the small town southern school board that I will have to go through to obtain new novels. My student do not love the usual 10th grade literature such as Lord of the Flies or Shakespeare’s Caesar and I’d love something to add to my curriculum next year. Thank you in advance, --Amanda Books Discussed Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado Give Work by Leila Janah The Red Tree by Caitlin R. Surprise! This week we have an interview, with Chris of Schammasch, the Swiss avant-garde band we've been raving about for weeks. We get his perspective on art, avant-garde and meaning behind music. A great chat! Definitely listen to Triangle (here is a good place). Then we do our news round-up, new music from Hatebreed, Six Feet Under (why), Meshuggah, Setentia, Brujeria, The Levitation Hex and the DOOM OST. We talk about Agalloch's disbanding, Rob Zombie's being a Babymetal fan (and my short review of their live show), and we talk about Radiohead, Beyonce and Drake taking a stance against Spotify, and the big perspective of the streaming service wars. Then we talk about how album art reflects on the music, inspired by our conversation with Chris. We have an extensive cool people section this time, gushing over DOOM and talking about the Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. Enjoy!

Help support this podcast! >> This is the sweet 16th episode of the Write Now podcast with yours truly. Sometimes we lose that spark. Remember when writing used to be fun? Or better yet, satisfying? You can find that feeling again. It might just be a matter of letting go of some other stuff that matters less. It's about understanding what it is you love about writing. Here are some simple questions you can ask yourself that will guide your mind back into a happy writing place. Ask yourself... What was it that made you fall in love with writing in the first place? Reveling in the sheer number of possibilities? Getting lost in a unique story that was all your own? Playing out an imagined fantasy? Sharing a message you were passionate about? Next, ask: What changed? Did someone kill your confidence and tell you your writing wasn't great? Did you, for some reason, begin to feel ashamed of what you had written? Did you lose yourself in trying too hard to be like another, more famous, writer? Finally! What would it take for you to feel real joy and satisfaction in your writing again? That's where happiness lies. I'll help you find it in this week's episode of Write Now. The book of the week. What first drew me to Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, book 1 in the Southern Reach Trilogy, was a couple things: That pretty, pretty cover Rave reviews from two wonderful and well-read friends Insinuations that it is similar to LOST How could I resist? It is so hard to do horror right, in my eyes. Despite being a genre that gets looked down upon by critics and the public alike, good horror is difficult. It's so easy to be cheap -- so easy to be gory and cruel, to follow a common trope to its logical conclusion. It's hard to write something both truly awful and truly beautiful. But that is what Jeff VanderMeer has done in Annihilation. Four female scientists -- a biologist, anthropologist, psychologist, and surveyor -- are sent to investigate the mysterious "Area X", where 11 expeditions have gone before them and never returned -- or returned changed. You know me and my affinity for the Weird, so be prepared. This book is certainly Weird, and it's not for everyone. A quick scan of fellow reader reviews on Goodreads suggests that people tend to either love or hate this book. If I were you, I'd take my chances regardless. The narrator is unreliable and the science questionable, but I think you'll appreciate VanderMeer's beautiful, speculative, and deeply insightful writing. Keep up-to-date with my reading exploits on Goodreads. Featured quote: Leave me a review. Like the Write Now podcast? Help me to stay visible on iTunes when you write a review.
