How did a Black janitor, a widower living with his kids in a rough neighborhood, raise a world class concert pianist and a Fortune 500 CEO? Kenneth Frazier, the highly respected CEO of pharmaceutical giant Merck, joins us for our final episode of Season 3 to share his powerful story of being raised by a fiercely determined single dad.Ken's father Otis Frazier firmly believed in the power of tough love. He saw his children as capable of anything, so he consistently set the bar high and expected them to clear it. He had little use for sentimentality. As Ken recalls, his father had no interest in being his children's friend, saying “I want to be respected and feared [by my children], but not necessarily in that order.” We hear from Ken how tough love worked for him, and together we explore the limits of and alternatives to this approach. In this fascinating episode Ken shares plenty of his father's words of wisdom, and offers up some gems of his own.
Do you know someone who has been affected by war either by serving in the military or by getting caught in the crossfire? Have you heard their stories of how war affected them? My guest today, Ken Buckles, a retired high school teacher and football coach, has seen first hand the importance of hearing the stories from a diverse group of veterans and others affected by war. Ken is the son of a Marine who experienced combat during the Korean War, returned home experiencing symptoms of PTSD, and committed suicide when Ken was just 30 years old. We will discuss how this caused ripple effects on him and his family but how ultimately, it inspired him to start a program at his high school called Living History Day, which allowed veterans and others affected by war to engage with his teenage students and tell their stories. As Ken began recording the many stories he was hearing, this ultimately morphed into a book with three volumes, the first titled, Remembrance Volume I: Remembering My Veteran Friends and Guests From Living History Days. It is a page turner to say the least and after hearing him speak with me today, is something that you will definitely want to get your hands on. He has opened a door allowing Veterans and others affected by war to share their stories and the atrocities they’ve had to face and conquer in his book with more volumes on the way. Listen in to learn all about the adversities that Ken has had to overcome, all of the ways he has stayed positive, and the impact he has made on countless people over the years. Memorable Quotes: “So many people, they need to realize that you got to hang on to hope and you got to know there’s better times ahead, we can get through this and there’s so many lessons to be learned, you know, the choice is which way do you want to go?” “When you accomplish something, no one can ever take it away from you.” “I’m so proud of them, and they’ve carried that with them into their careers and raising their kids.” “Coached a lot of kids who played at the college level whether it’s football or other sports, and one who ended up playing in the NFL.” In this episode you will learn: All about Ken’s background and what made him into the man he is today. How he overcame adversities in his life and how we have the power to decide our own fate, despite going through hard times. The importance of perspective and how seeing things from a different lens can positively impact your life. All about Ken’s days as a D1 Athlete, High School Teacher and Football Coach The amazing program he started for his students to learn from Veterans and more. How Ken became an author of the book Remembrance Volume I: Remembering My Veteran Friends and Guests From Living History Days. This week, host and AABD President David Baris is joined by Ken Thomas, one of the leading experts on CRA in the country. If he doesn’t know the answer, no one does. He also is the president of Community Development Fund Advisors and serves as a director of a community bank in New York and as Chair of the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee. He was a lecturer at Wharton for 42 years. Ken will discuss CRA, fair lending, and fair banking in light of the anticipated challenges from the new Biden administration. He will provide advice on how bank boards can play an important role in overseeing this risk and helping their bank meet not just responsibilities under law but also to the community. As Ken says in the podcast episode, if it hasn’t happened yet, it will. This should be a front burner issue for bank directors. ***** Thanks to our guest, Ken Thomas: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ken-thomas-2371a8125/ Calling All Bank Directors is the podcast of the American Association of Bank Directors. Episode 012 of That Was Disappointing is Live. On the 12th day God created 12 Drummers Drumming. Wait — is that right? Our first topic is about hot takes. Art doesn’t remember what the topic was specifically about, which bodes well for the remainder of the program... Our second topic is a spooky one: would you rather live with a shadow person (Wikipedia it!) for the rest of your life or be possessed a random day every year (for the rest of your life) by a spirit? Somehow the topic of Bigfoot blowing loads in your face also rears its ugly head. Keep it classy, Lex! Our third topic is about the toys we always wanted. As Ken only got coal around the holidays, his list was rather extensive. Fortunately, his friends let him play with the cardboard boxes their toys came in and it did wonders for his imagination. Meanwhile, Producer Dave still regrets the Furby that got away. Our final topic is about the worst jobs we’ve ever had. Devon has hated all his jobs/coworkers equally, so there’s that. On a side note, you might wanna reconsider your next trip to Nationals Park for reasons. *nervous cough* Come listen to the podcast that’s receiving rave reviews on the Apple Store. And not just from our wives either!
(J.R.) I have heard it said before that managers get the team from point A to point B; leaders take the team to lengths thought unimaginable. Ken Karwowski harnesses both. In part one of this two part discussion, Ken discusses his tumultuous journey to receiving an offer of employment from his dream employer, Ford Motor Company. As Ken was scheduled to join the automaker in the height of the financial crisis, another barrier was put in front of him which led to a life changing trip with his best friend. As Ken says, "Everything Happens for a Reason." Ken talks about his journey from when he was diagnosed with Leukemia - AML to treatment and bone marrow transplant. In this light-hearted conversation, Ken highlights the reality of having cancer treatment and how he recovers from his bone marrow transplant and from the whole experience really. As Ken would say sometimes it feels like 1 step forward and 3 step backwards, but slowly the healing and recovery is happening.
Most of us know Ken Doctor, the president of Newsonomics, who in 2010 predicted many of the industry disruptions that occurred over the last 10 years. Now he is working on “Lookout," a wide-reaching new model for local news that will launch later this year. Ken just released a new paper, based on intensive reporting, that predicts where the industry will be in 2025. As Ken looks forward to where we may be in a few short years, some may call his findings eye-opening and even sobering. E&P publisher Mike Blinder goes one-on-one with Ken Doctor as he predicts where our industry is heading with reader revenue, newsroom staffing, print frequency and more.
What a month it has been for Cricket South Africa…A mirror of our current national South African malaise and recovering captured State? Whilst rugby shows the nation what is possible with transformation, leadership and dedicated goal setting, CSA has imploded leaving players considering strike action; sponsors re-assessing or withdrawing from future commitments; journalists locked out of grounds and denied the Constitutional Right to freedom of the press. And meanwhile the coffers are increasingly bare…You REALLY can’t make this up. The journalists targeted include Nightwatchmen co-host Ken Borland: one of the “disciplined” five well-known and respected South Afrcan sports journos in what appears to be an infamous own-goal of epic proportions – pun absolutely intended. Hear from Ken as he discusses on record and for the first time his reflections on the wild and the whacky goings-on. Before the end of the first week of December the landscape of the top-echelon has changed – temporary in some instances but merciful change nonetheless - and coaching positions are filled with outstanding leaders and for the coming four years. Faul, Smith, Nkwe and Boucher become the foundation stones around which the future short-term destiny of South African Cricket will be shaped. As Ken states: This is not over. Hear from them and Ken as he assesses the lie of the land as the wind changes direction and the conversation begins to turn back to on-field issues and worries (at last). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nightwatchmencricket/message
Ken Unger didn’t set out to become America’s Soul Doctor. By the age of thirty he had been a pastor for five years and a husband for three and he was burning out on both. That’s when a spiritual retreat transformed his life forever. A profoundly nurturing community of genuine love and healing showed him how much lives could be helped in a short period of time. Experiential exercises, vulnerable authentic teachers and deep, intimate relationships transformed him in ways that prescription drugs, education and traditional counseling never could. When he got home, people asked him to offer similar retreats for friends and colleagues. He never imagined the powerful impact his retreats made on virtually everyone who attended. Now, almost 30 years later, he still offers life-changing Retreats to any who want to “transform their life in a weekend.” People who attend have likened them to a health spa for the soul.As he progressed on his own spiritual growth and healing journey his Retreats also evolved. To the basic Spiritual Growth Retreat he added a Becoming Childlike Retreat, an Inner Journey Retreat and in recent years a Spiritual Healing Retreat. Each level goes deeper into the psyche; each produces wonderful changes in virtually all who attend. Therapists say they are worth a year in therapy. As Ken learned to heal the psychic pain that almost destroyed his own life, people sought him out for their own personal healing. This birthed his amazing healing process known as STEP Therapy, Spiritual Therapy for Emotional Pain. His new book The Ultimate Breakthrough explains this simple, gentle, yet powerful healing process. Instead of treating symptoms in endless months and years of emotional archeological digs it heals the primal pain that fuels most of our problems. When clients wanted to treat depression without drugs, he developed Seminars like Peace without Prozac. To train businesses for better interpersonal skills, he designed Improving Your Emotional IQ. As relationships crumbled he designed Metamorphosis to teach people the skills that make relationships thrive. When companies struggled with dysfunction in the workplace, he started the Healed at Work Conferences.Perhaps what has most rewarding is the many people Ken talks to many years after attending his events who tell him they were a true watershed in their own spiritual growth, healing and development that five, ten, 20 years later they are still different as a result of one retreat or seminar.
On the rollercoaster of life, Ken D. Foster has seen the peaks and the valleys, working his way up from gas station attendant to head of a $200 million securities business, and back to the very bottom. Ken finally found stability, and success, when he cleaned his slate of beliefs and behaviors and began anew. Now a best-selling author of five books, a podcaster, and an empowerment coach, Ken has released his newest book, The Courage to Change Everything, which provides daily strategies to overcome life’s greatest challenges. As Ken explains to host and award-winning journalist Dean Rotbart, his approach to success is a hybrid of ancient and modern wisdom, Eastern and Western philosophies. Photo: Ken D. Adam Schiff and the Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee lay out their case for the impeachment of President Trump. How strong is the case? And should they have taken more time to gather more information? Republicans also submitted a report, which Ken says is more like creative writing than a report. As Ken and Josh taped this episode, the House Judiciary Committee began its first hearing. When can we expect articles of impeachment and what will be in them? Also, what the hell has Rudy Giuliani been up to? Ken and Josh discuss that, plus Duncan Hunter, Lev Parnas, and David Wohl.
Microsoft SQL Server is one of the most deployed databases on the planet, with millions of customers worldwide. So it’s important to understand how customers will be affected by emerging technologies, particularly in this era of digital transformation. Ken LeTourneau, Enterprise Solutions Architect in the Data Center Group at Intel, explains what impact data center technologies like Intel® OptaneTM DC Persistent Memory will have for customers deploying SQL Server 2019. What worked, even a few years ago, in the data center won’t support the demands of today. As Ken says, "It's no longer about hindsight, it's about insight.” SQL Server 2019 provides industry-leading performance and security, with intelligence over all of an enterprise’s data -- structured or unstructured. SQL Server 2019 with new big data features provides an easier path to acting on data, and with support for Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory, it can deliver larger memory-optimized databases for scale-up and scale-out system landscapes. As Ken explains, SQL Server is no longer simply a way to run queries. It's an intelligent data platform that enables advanced data work such as prescriptive analytics. Distributed data bases, intelligence at the edge, and beefing up analytics and insights capabilities are changing the way customers should think about building data bases. Learn more about how Intel and Microsoft are enabling this intelligence from the edge to the cloud here. There is a lot of talks these days about submission in business, and a lot of it has to do with the management submitting to the culture of the organization. There is actually so much strength and power in that, but it takes a while to build up that trust with your direct reports and the people above you to be able to take directives and deliver it to your team. As Ken talks about submissive growth, he covers the power of submitting to a system or a tool in listening to your company’s culture and how your employees want to be led. Love the show? This interview with Ken Dwight covers a lot of territory. Ken Dwight Ken train IT Pros on cutting-edge virus fighting and virus remediation. He show folks how to dig into the guts of machines to do much more than “remove” viruses. Rather than “Nuking and Paving,” Ken teaches how to dig in and remove all the remnants of viruses – even those left over after AV software has removed the virus. As Ken points out, a lot of modern viruses are very complicated. Many techs approach this by wiping and reloading the PC. Instead, Ken recommends that you clean out the registry and find the files and folders that are left all over the machine. Here are a few additional sources he offers: Virus Remediation Training workshops – https://www.thevirusdoc.com/virus-remediation-training Recorded mini-course on encrypting ransomware – https://www.thevirusdoc.com/ransomware Recorded mini-course on cleaning up after a tech-support scammer – https://www.thevirusdoc.com/scammer Note: Ken offers a 15% discount on the tuition for any of his training. This episode I’m at the American Club Union Bar in Singapore with digital media and advertising sector veteran, Ken Mandel. The topic of our conversation: the past and the future of advertising. It’s a space Ken knows better than most, having held Asia-wide leadership positions at Publicis, 141 Worldwide, XM Asia, Ogilvy & Mather, Yahoo!, Salesforce.com and Hootsuite. Advertising is big business and still growing. Today nearly half of the $630 billion in global ad spend has gone digital with Google and Facebook. Together they generate $150 billion per year, feeding targeted ads to billions of digital addicts. Where will those eyeballs roam in the near future? That’s is, literally, a $100 billion-dollar question. Ken makes a number of striking observations, including a skepticism about what Facebook and Google advertising has been able to accomplish. Facebook and Google have a lot of data and they combine it with a platform that allows for ease of access as well as scalability. But has it been effective? Will it continue to be effective? There are some signs that advertisers may be re-thinking their global digital strategies. As Ken points out, the conversion funnel—the Facebook and Google clicks that turn into actual purchases—is narrow. While those social networking and internet search platforms might be effective tools for shifting public opinion, they do not necessarily translate into an O2O transaction. That’s a key buzzword one needs to know because it’s the holy grail of digital advertising. O2O means “online to offline.” That’s what advertisers are really after, the key to moving someone out of the digital environment to the real world, from seeing a product on their iPhone to actually holding it in their hand. Ken’s take on what the future holds might be surprising and that’s what makes this episode essential listening.
I believe that we are all brought into this world with the inner knowing that there is something far greater than our physical existence. For some, that knowing is buried deep and may never be fully realized in this life. For others, it is strong and the process to find our way can be frustrating. In a world that does not foster the intuitive self, many of us get lost trying to figure out our authentic expression. Looking for answers in the external world left Ken Martin anxious and alone while his inner knowing screamed to be expressed. His seeking turned to defiance and in dis-ease he chose drugs and alcohol to quiet his pain at a young age. Performing well in school was not Ken's issue, in fact, academics and athletics came very easy to him. His struggle was in his search for more knowledge of what the Bhagavad Gita calls the big Self. The external world provided him with no answers and so he continued to use drugs and alcohol far beyond their efficacy. The very formula that Ken defines as addiction. Ken grew up in a Catholic family with a spiritual mother. He says meditation was always a part of his process. He describes his ego as relentless but it is clear that his discipline to practice overrides his active mind. As Ken says, "What active mind wants to meditate?" On most mornings he notices that his mind does not want to meditate but he does it anyway. His understands that he does not have to succumb to the internal dialogue of the mind. He describes meditation as more difficult than getting sober. Today we go deep. Ken opens up not only about his process of addiction and his search for truth but also the after-effects of a massive heart attack that he suffered just over five years ago. I'm honored to share our guest and his story with you today. Thank you so much for tuning in, supporting the show and further the YogiTriathlete mission to create a better world.
Welcome to another episode of our News Flash series, where share the latest developments in the blockchain space, straight off the press. For today’s episode we are excited to present Ken Marke, CMO at B3i, the blockchain insurance industry initiative. Ken is joining us to reveal some exciting news about B3i’s new product and plans for the future. B3i B3i, which we have introduced in a previous episode, began life in October 2016 when five insurers and reinsurers came together to see how blockchain can benefit the insurance industry. This led to a consortium which ten other members joined to test the viability of blockchain in solving problems for the insurance industry. Its first project was a prototype for a catastrophe excess of loss programme, which has been very successful. The next step was to establish B3i as a legal entity, domiciled in Zurich. Now, B3i is focused on expanding its product line and enabling partners to cooperate with them to offer more products and services on B3i’s platform, thereby creating a network ecosystem. Today B3i will reveal how it plans to achieve this goal and Ken is here to guide us through B3i’s announcements. 1. Commercial insurance development programme B3i is launching its commercial insurance development programme, for which it recruited Antonio di Marzo from Generali. You listen to Antonio’s interview below to find out more about B3i’s development programme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1tTRoY5BYk B3i’s development strategy also involves expanding its global network. It will launch an office in New York in a few weeks and is planning to open several new offices in key regions around the globe. Additionally, B3i has been forming alliances with industry groups around the world, including the Association of British Insurers in the UK and the Chamber of Digital Commerce in the US. The purpose of B3i’s new alliances, and of its development programme in general, is to expand its network and its ability to educate the insurance industry. Ken points out it is very important for the insurance industry to better understand blockchain’s potential. While experimenting with blockchain is welcome, Ken believes the time has come to move beyond experimentation and start identifying real problems blockchain can solve in the insurance industry. As Ken says, “let’s get blockchain out of the lab and into the business”. 2. Cat XoL product Staying true to Ken’s word, B3i unveiled a demo of their Cat XoL prototype in September 2017, inviting companies to join its testing platform. We are excited to announce the Cat XoL product will become available on the market at the end of this year, taking live contracts on the platform through an early movers programme. B3i chose Cat XoL as its first product as it is important to start simple when developing a prototype. A Property Cat XoL contract was the perfect choice as there is usually a smaller network in a reinsurance contract including a seed, a broker and a few reinsurers. Additionally, there are less transactions in a reinsurance contract, ensuring the new concept wouldn’t face too much pressure in the early stages of development. In that way, B3i could work on a simple project, making sure the prototype, its functionalities and peripheral needs are all in order before moving on to more complex products. But isn’t trust already guaranteed in such a small network? While engendering trust is one of blockchain’s strongest assets, it’s not the only one. The Cat XoL product helps ensure contract certainty and simplify communication, allowing parties to better deal with any unexpected challenges that might arise. Blockchain’s immutability ensures every party has the same version of truth, which removes friction from the value chain and the need for reconciliations in the network. The results Testing a blockchain product’s performance against existing processes to measure the exact improvement in ef...

Episode 96 – Mentoring Your Staff with Ken Andrukow Ken Andrukow, a senior Two-Brain Mentor and owner of Reebok CrossFit Ramsay, joins us on the show today. Ken's gym one of the top gyms in the world, and he attributes his success to his staff. As we identify the "gold standards" in the gym industry, Ken is at the top of the leaderboard in many categories (including profit). One of these gold standards is staff retention. Ken's metrics are great because his relationships are great. We all know that money alone does not keep a staff member satisfied. You must also find out how to deliver on their perfect day to keep them around. In this episode we talk about how to mentor your staff, how to setup goals with your staff, make sure they are on the right track, and how to make sure they can see a clear path to their perfect day. Ken has done a remarkable job growing his gym from 300 members when he started as a TwoBrain client, to now reaching 500. His metrics (ARM, LEG and profit) are even more impressive. But from a staffing perspective, this can present quite a few challenges for a gym owner. At about the 200-member mark, Ken realized that he could not manage the gym alone anymore. It was at this time that Ken had to step away from coaching and focus on growing his businesses full time. Ken also realized that he had to completely replace himself in all roles to have time to grow the gym. According to Ken, “It’s about making sure all of your staff react to every issue the way you would.” Ken's core values include integrity, empathy, loyalty, and tenacity. Ken puts every one of his prospective employees through a training program on these core values to ensure they match up and will be a good fit. One of the ways that Ken conveys these core values to his employees is through stories. Stories about his childhood and life challenges are really important and meaningful in showcasing these values. Another key item to have when operating a large gym is to have systems in place for your staff to follow. As Ken’s gym grew he assumed everyone else could read his mind and know what he wanted. He soon found out, however, that this was not the case. As more and more members were asking Ken directly for help, he knew that systems must be developed for his staff to handle. It wasn’t until he put systems in place and gave people the authority to solve problems that he had the time to grow his businesses. Above all else, he says, staff really want to know they are making a difference in people’s lives. A large part of success is about mindset and if your staff can have the same positive mindset that you have the opportunities are limitless. Join us today as we dive into staffing questions and much more! In this episode, Ken Lizotte and Kathleen explore when, how, and why to invest in yourself and in your business and how that leads to sustainable profitability. As you find out, spending money to develop skills or expand your business can actually set you apart from the competition. It is what both these successful thought leaders have done, so listen in and find out how to bust this myth wide open. Key Take Aways: Anticipate expenses. As Ken says, when you do your annual budget, set aside some resources for marketing and personal growth courses or coaching. Trust your gut. Not all investments, coaches or training programs are for all people. Do your research, and then trust your instincts. Learn from your mistakes. Part of being a business owner is taking risks and sometimes failing. When you realize that you have made a poor investment of your time or money, change course. It can be difficult to realize you have made a mistake, but the sooner you do and the quicker you change course, the better off you and your business will be. Special Announcement: Check out Ken’s latest collaboration, “What Would Henry Do? Essays for the 21st Century” with Introduction by Ken and featured essays by 40 scholars, activists, authors, and celebrities including President Jimmy Carter. Published by Thoreau Farm, the birthplace of Henry David Thoreau as a fundraiser. Ken Lizotte is the author of seven books including his most recent The Speaker’s Edge: the Ultimate Go-To Guide for Locating and Landing Lots of Speaking Gigs (Maven House Press) and The Expert’s Edge: Become the Go-To Authority that People Turn to Every Time (McGraw-Hill). He is the Chief Imaginative Officer of emerson consulting group inc., a Concord, Massachusetts, consulting firm that transforms speakers and consultants into “thought leaders” by helping them write and publish their ideas as articles and books. Kathleen has worked with Ken since 2010. Ken lives in Concord, Massachusetts, with his wife Barbara, daughter Chloe, and Golden Retriever puppy Beckett.
Michael Peregrine continues the conversation with Ken Kaufman, managing director and chair of Kaufman Hall, about how the forces of “business disruption” are beginning to affect health care. As Ken noted last month, we are starting to see signs of disruption in health care, with the growth of retail clinics, telemedicine, genomics and other new models and technology. The big question remains whether health care will experience the kind of major disruption that we have seen in so many other industries and how health care boards should prepare their organizations.

As Ken reminds us, “We need to focus instead on our only assets, our people who have all been through several technology shifts in their life. They have seen hardware evaporate into software and become data in the IoT cloud or processes acted on at the edge.” 2016 ControlTrends Awards Details for Attendees. Ken is being a real teacher this week by starting his lectures up again. He mentions some of the challenges and advantages to teaching at his young age. As Ken continues his new driver experiences, he has someone almost hit him and then follow him almost home. This leads to the guys going on about issues with the perception of the police today. Afterwards, Ken explains some extreme adulting he's had to deal with lately. Wayne is trying to jump on the healthy train by starting to work out with technology. The Technology wins. He has also fallen in love with the hip-hop musical, Hamilton. In Geek Cred, Wayne had an even tougher time with technology. His computer exploded itself in Windows 10. While waiting to get things running again, he caught up on some anime on his phone. VtW is still playing a lot of Mechwarrior Online and Wayne shows off the Battletech swag he got for Kickstarting a new game. Ken is still enjoying his WoW as well as is getting smart with Ted Talks. In the Geek-O-Scope, Ken shows us some ways to motivate ourselves to lose weight, a massive new level of portable storage, and the first home robot that has him excited. It was a long night of gaming for Wayne as he stayed up all night to host an early morning show so that he could be joined by Ken this week before he started traveling for work. If only we could put together a solid show technically... This week we deal with Ken's Mac which means his microphone may or may not work. Ken will try to fix things with money by buying new technology. Thanks to everyone who supports the show. Ken has had an odd couple of weeks including being stalked by an old lady. Wayne avoided the whole valentine's holiday by doing some dancing to piano music, as he is getting ready to try and get back in shape for the year. He is hoping to start eating better and working out more. Ken is prepping himself for a lot of travel time without internets, by acquiring lots of media for his consumption. We will look forward to his reviews. Unfortunately for his gaming offline needs, he picked up Farming Simulator. As Ken starts informing Wayne about his WoW gaming, he almost succeeds in working through Wayne's constitution for staying awake. Ken did manage to watch a couple really good movies in the last couple weeks, including The Martian and Deadpool. Yes you should see them both. As Wayne works to stay awake, he shares stories of his time in the military, when he found the ability to fall asleep standing up, even while marching... Not a good thing. Wayne also shares his adventures at Colorado Anime Fest where he succeeded in both getthing La Camp-Et ouf of her shell with cosplay and in surprising Ken by getting a sound bite from a famous voice actor, just for him. Wayne also manages to wake up to tell his story. Looks like cold air, caffeine, and great conventions are all it takes to keep Wayne going. Wayne continues with hes impressions of the latest open beta of The Division and what it is like to use his Tobii eye tracker with the game. In this interview I talk with NASM Master Instructor, Ken Miller about “Corrective Exercise for Performance.” As Ken states in his awesome workshops, “If you have a body - you’re an athlete.” Life happens in three dimensions. We need mobility and the ability we need to “move” efficiently in three planes of motion (sagittal, frontal, and transverse). To achieve this goal, we must get there safely. Ken shares with us how corrective exercise can help us get there. ken@kjfitlab.com www.kjfitlab.com Instagram: @kjfitlab Facebook: kjfitlabllc https://www.facebook.com/kjfitlab11 Twitter: kjfitlab http://www.sterlinghealthandfitness.com
Grief expert Ken Druck joins the conversation and describes the powerful effect that unprocessed grief has on us. One of the painful patterns is a numbness not only within ourselves but in how we witness and interact with the world around us. As Ken puts it, "Unprocessed grief becomes indifference to the pain of other people—unprocessed grief dulls us, dumbs us down." To which Freeman ads: "We become less trustworthy to ourselves and others." Listen in and learn how to unravel this pattern.
For us, every “nation” has and has always had a “culture,” meaning a defining set of folkways, customs, and styles that is different from every other. But like the modern understanding of the word “nation,” this idea of “culture” or “a culture” is not very old. According to the OED, the modern meaning gained currency in English only in the nineteenth century. In a way, that’s not surprising: the nineteenth century was the era of high-nationalism and, as we’ve said, every “nation” had to have an essence that distinguished it from all others. That essence came to be called “culture.” This nation-culture equivalency, however, presented some nationalists with a problem, particularly if their “nation” had what looked to be several cultures. Jews are the archetypal example. They were spread all over the place, spoke many languages, and practiced many customs. There was nothing to unite them except Judaism–itself hardly unified. If you believed in a Jewish nation, then you had to believe that there could be a “Jewish culture.” But what would it be? In his fascinating new book Jewish Renaissance in the Russian Revolution (Harvard, 2010), Kenneth Moss explores the ways in which Eastern European Jewish culture-builders attempted to answer this question in the Russian Revolutionary era. As Ken points out, there was no simple answer. Rather, there were a lot of competing answers (Yiddishist, Hebraist, Socialist, etc.). But there was also a lot of deep, deep thought about what it meant to build and have a culture. These thinkers knew what we have forgotten, namely, that all cultures are made. They knew this because they were making one. Whether we admit it or not, we are too… Please become a fan of “New Books in Jewish Studies” on Facebook if you haven’t already. Steve Whitmire - It's Not Easy Being Teal. Part 1. The Performer Behind the World’s Most Famous Frog Recounts Coming to an Integral View. click here for free sample! (right-click to download) The Muppet famous for saying "It’s not easy being green," carries on the creative tradition founded by Jim Henson in Steve Whitmire’s puppeteering of this international figure with a decidedly more Integral tilt. WhoSteve Whitmire is one of the few individuals who has carried on the whole-hearted legacy of Jim Henson, and the mastery and development of puppetry through Jim’s unique Muppets. Since the passing of Jim Henson in 1990, Steve has served as the animating force and puppeteer for beloved characters such as Kermit the Frog and Sesame Street’s Ernie.SummarySteve Whitmire spent 14 intense and creative years with the extraordinary Jim Henson before his passing. As of 2008, Steve has been the animating force behind, most notably, Kermit the Frog for nearly two decades. This was not something Steve planned for in any way. Jim passed away at the age of 53 from an infection that no one could have seen coming—although it later became revealed that Jim had been considering Steve for the puppeteer of Kermit, so that Jim could explore other creative endeavors. However, their connection had started decades earlier. When Steve was a scant 10-years-old, he wrote Jim a letter to express his appreciation for his work, and to ask if he had written anything on the construction of puppets. In fact, Jim had not written anything on the construction of puppets at that time, but responded personally to Steve’s letter, and directed him toward some simple Muppet patterns that had been published a few years ago in a magazine. Thus started the career of a life-long Jim Henson puppeteer, aided by Steve’s mother’s sewing machine. As Ken comments, puppeteering can be, and has been, looked at by the world’s great Mystical Traditions as a metaphor for ultimate Spirit being the transcendental Puppeteer of all worldly phenomena. And there is much truth in that observation. Spirit, if nothing else, inhabits a massive number of multiple perspectives, and in order to perform puppeteering successfully, one literally inhabits, and becomes one with, the puppet’s personality. It is a minor re-enaction of what Spirit does moment-to-moment spontaneously, throughout the entire Kosmos. As with Jim Henson, Steve Whitmire is a very humble soul. If nothing else, Steve is honored to carry on a tradition started by a modern-day master, by whatever name. Jim’s productions have been among the most successful television series in history: Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and Fraggle Rock were all international sensations. Sesame Street alone has aired more than 4,100 episodes over a 38-season run, winning 109 Emmy Awards in the process—and it’s still going. To say that Steve is a modern-day backbone of the Muppet tradition is in no way an exaggeration. You may not see his face, but you can see Steve animating Kermit the Frog in a musical duo with Kylie Minogue on YouTube, along with many other notable appearances. Kermit the Frog was, and is, a public, (inter)national expression of the pluralistic, green worldview—but always with a subtle reminder of how multicultural expressions can be reconciled and brought together with an Integral View. It may not be easy being green, but it’s ever harder being teal (where an Integral understanding begins and expands). With the spirit of growth that Jim Henson embodied and intuited, and that Steve Whitmire carries on in an evolutionary context with a clearly Integral perspective, we invite you to celebrate this artistic and creative dimension of puppetry, and “taking the perspective of other” that it implies, in this one-of-a kind-dialogue…. "Jim walked into the room and said, ‘I want to do a show that will change the world and end war'—and the writers said, 'Well that’s great Jim, how could we possibly do that?' We didn’t know, but Fraggle Rock was the first ever international coproduction of any television show...." (Click here for full dialogue.) Joe Perez - Soulfully Gay. Part 1. Out of the Closet, Into an Integral Embrace.(click here for free sample)The author of one of the most searing, courageous personal memoirs of our time shares how an Integral Approach helped him reconcile a life of fierce inner struggles with what it means to be a gay man in today’s culture, the difference between genuine spiritual experiences and psychotic episodes, and the thorny intersection of homosexuality and Christianity. In the foreword to Soulfully Gay, Ken Wilber writes: "Joe Perez’s book is perhaps the most astonishing, brilliant, and courageous look at the interface between individual belief and cultural values that has been written in our time. By a homosexual, or a heterosexual, or any other sexual I am aware of." Ken wrote this foreword without even having met Joe—probably one of the strongest complements one writer can give to another—and Soulfully Gay is the second offering from our Integral Books imprint at Shambhala Publications. In this dialogue, we are introduced to this "rip-roaring wonder of a writer," and hear Joe share the first part of his journey towards reconciling and integrating a life very nearly torn to shreds. This rather extraordinary chronicle unfolds around several conflict-inducing facts, one of which is that Joe is indeed gay; another of which is that Joe was raised Roman (homophobic) Catholic; another is that Joe tested HIV positive at age 24; another is that he often has authentic mystical states; and yet another is that Joe is, but only occasionally, clinically psychotic. It is the jolting collision of those items, held together by Joe’s courage in the face of them all, that makes his story so incredible in so many ways. But all those items didn’t merely collide; they coalesced, through agony, and euphoria, and sheer determination into a deeply Integral life. Joe’s story is a shining example of why an Integral Approach is far more than "just a map," or "just cognitive head-stuff." Integral helps one find a place for everything in one’s life. Integral helps find the patterns that connect. In an Integral life, there’s room for everything... even all the things that one has disowned, shoved into the shadows, pushed away; and because all these parts of one’s own being are held at arm’s length, one can never feel truly whole. As Ken so beautifully summarizes, "Joe’s life is being artfully lived in the very fact of its truthfulness, its deep embrace, shadows and warts and worms and all, woven unhesitatingly into the tapestry of a lustrous display, a deep peace, an abiding love... and therein, surely, a lesson for us all...." We invite you to meet this extraordinary man, and listen in to this extraordinary story...."I didn’t know who I was anymore. Any sense of meaning or purpose had come crashing down around me. Then, one ordinary day, I was preparing for bed, and I became overwhelmed by this sensation of euphoria and bliss that permeated everything in my awareness...."click here for full audio
Alex Grey - Integral Art. Part 4. Anchoring the Seed of Liberation.(click here for free sample)Alex Grey and Ken Wilber explore an integral approach to art, how visionary and spiritual art can plant a seed of liberation in the mind of the viewer, and how one can recognize and anchor that realization in one's own life.Alex and Ken begin the conversation by discussing a question that's fundamental to the success of any visionary and spiritual artist: how do you "plant a seed of liberation" in the mind of the viewer? If you are interested in getting to know your own higher dimension of being, seeking out this kind of transcendental art can be one important practice in your own integral life—and if you have some kind of understanding of what's happening when a piece of art pops you into a higher state of consciousness, the more likely that realization is going to "stick," and stay with you longer. What Alex has had the good fortune to discover, and the skill to express, is that portraying—as he puts it—"transcendental light in relationship with the body" is a very effective way to help people resonate with a piece of transformative art. As Ken goes on to mention, all states of consciousness are supported by their corresponding bodies, and by depicting some of the higher and more refined bodies, Alex has been able to elicit and anchor some of the higher and more refined states of consciousness in viewers. An example from more traditional sacred art helps make clear what all of this actually means: when Christian artists paint halos around the heads of saints, they are depicting a subtle-body aspect of a saint's higher state of consciousness—and if you gaze upon the image of a saint long enough, you may start to feel saintly yourself. What's extraordinary about Alex's work is that he has taken this general concept and brought it into the modern world, always drinking deeply from the world's wisdom traditions, but then expressing those visionary insights with astonishing creativity, detail, and clarity. What follows is an in-depth discussion—carried over from Part 3 of this dialogue—of how entheogens (psychedelics) have played a pivotal role in Alex's development as an artist. One reason we are always eager to explore this topic with Alex is that he is one of the very few people who have, over a lifetime of experience, used these powerful substances in a genuinely responsible and growth-oriented manner. Entheogens are a controversial topic in spiritual practice, but experiential evidence from various practitioners suggests that use can have a powerful impact on one's spiritual perspective. Whether one is personally interested in using entheogens on one's own path or not, this is an extremely enlightening part of the dialogue, simply because this topic is so rarely spoken about in a healthy, rational, and transparent manner."For example, when viewing art from a truly enlightened Zen Master, there can be four simple brush strokes for a stalk of bamboo, and BOING—Big Mind."click here for full audioIntegral Naked continues to be an excellent source of stimulating content and provocative conversations with the world's greatest thinkers, leaders, artists, and visionaries.
