There was a guy with a Jim Abbott rookie card which wasn’t worth much, but the guy was telling a good story about seeing him play at the University of Michigan, so they’d probably use it in the episode.  They only had a trickle of people here wanting their junk to be appraised for the show so they would have to take what they had. Junkin’ Coast to Coast had been broadcast for seventeen years on a second-tier cable channel and had been steadily declining in viewership since the original host had the temerity to kill himself.  It used to be called Junkin’ with Joe but Shit with Steve didn’t have the same ring to it so there you go. The bitch of it all, in Steve’s mind, was fucking Joe died with a belt hanging around his neck and a bunch of furry porn around his feet, but all of that has been conveniently forgotten and Steve was never going to be considered as good as the original guy. His videographer Yvonne had the baseball card guy squared up on a head and shoulders shot and was half turned away texting somebody.  She had been his primary shooter on the East Coast, and since the budget of the show kept shrinking year over year they traveled less and less and stayed closer to New York, and Steve’s other videographers in other parts of the country dropped away.   But even though they spent a lot of time together when they were shooting the show, and stayed at the same hotels and ate together every night, they had never hooked up.  Never even brushed hands.  Yet Steve felt like Yvonne was breaking up with him. This old lady comes up with another fucking Blenko vase and then after that was a lull, and Yvonne stepped out into the cold fall night and called somebody.  Steve watched through the windows of the visitor center.  When she hung up Steve went outside to confront her. “Are you looking for another job?” “It’s the last show of the season, Steve.” “Yeah, but we’re starting again in Portsmouth in January and people have always cleared out a bunch of shit over the holidays.” Yvonne shook her head.  “I’m hearing this is it.  Even if it isn’t I gotta keep an eye out for me.” Steve pointed at her cell phone. “Who was that?” Yvonne just shrugged.  “It was Rich, he’s on that dive bar show now where they show people how to fix them up, make a new drink menu, that kind of thing.” “Where he went when he fucking cut out on Junkin’, yeah.” “That’s not how he sees it but yeah.” “The asshole who hosts that?  We were at the upfronts in Boston with the network guys, and he was a douchebag to everybody.” “Yeah, but Rich says that’s only when he drinks.” “The whole premise of the show is him fucking drinking!” “Well, Rich says he needs a second shooter, so…” “So you’re the first shooter on my show!” Yvonne just looked at him, then slides her eyes back through the window of the visitor center.  Steve follows her line of sight and sees a guy in coveralls with a little book under his arm, and fuck my life if that isn’t probably a Civil War diary about somebody nobody gives a shit about. So Steve just set his jaw and Yvonne followed him back into the visitor center.  A blast of warm air and close smells hits them. “Hey, thanks for coming out to the show, if you’ll sign this release we can sit down and I can check out what you have there.”   The guy looked pretty nervous up close and only gives a little bird-like nod.  While he is scratching his name on the clipboard Yvonne holds out to him the fake smile dropped from Steve’s face. “Hey, can I look at this while my videographer sets up real quick?” “Sure, man, that’s why I brought it.”  the guy said.  “I found it when I was cleaning out my uncle’s attic.  He passed over the summer.” Steve swallowed hard and takes the small, soft-edged book while Yvonne gets ready to clip a lavalier mic on the guy. Steve frowned with distaste and puts the book down quickly on a nearby table.  Both Yvonne and the guy look at Steve with surprise. “Take that mic off, we can’t talk to this dude.”  Steve said with finality. The guy in the coveralls raised his hands in mock surrender. “Hey, man, I just want to know what I have there.” Steve looked at him steadily.  “It looks like you have a diary bound in human skin, and I don’t dick around with shit like that.” Now the guy looked more surprised than he did before.  He holds his hands open wide. “I-I didn’t know that.” “You said you got that from your uncle?  Maybe you should turn that over to the police.” “The police?  What?  It ain’t like that.” Steve just shrugged.  “I don’t care what it’s like, I’m not going on camera with a book made out of somebody’s skin.” Yvonne retreated behind her camera and doesn’t check her cell phone, for once. The guy in coveralls looked through the window of the visitor center to the darkness beyond, where nobody else is coming to bring their old crap tonight.  Then he looked square at Steve. “Okay, this is the straight story, man.  I’m a plumber, okay, I work for the city, we get this call there’s water running out of this old abandoned building, way down by Choate Bridge.  We go down there, water running across the street, eventually I gotta break into the place, look for a busted pipe, see?” “This is the most boring fucking story that involves a diary made of human skin I have ever heard.” “Okay, okay, so wait a second, I get in there, I shut off the pipe, I start looking around a minute.  This old boarded up place is full of all kinds of shit.  It looks like medieval torture shit and a bunch of other stuff I don’t know what it is, but there’s probably some money in all that, right?  But I can’t haul all that out with my partner just outside so I just grab this book off a shelf and thought I would bring it here tonight, see if this shit was worth anything.  My grandma watches your show, you know?” Steve is actually able to ignore this comment because his mind is working, working.   “What’s your name, dude?” “Why you got to know my name?” “I’m not calling the cops, I just want to know what to call YOU.” “Jimmy.  Jimmy Corey.” “So what other kind of stuff was in this place, Jimmy?”   Jimmy shrugged.  “Maybe some other weapons, some guns and shit, but I’m not touching somebody else’s guns.” “I have a feeling that was a good idea.  Just hang loose a second.” Steve lifted his chin, and Yvonne follows him to the corner, out of earshot. Yvonne looked at him like he was crazy. “Yvonne…I think this dude here found a Black Museum.” Yvonne arched a brow at him.  “A BLACK Museum?!” “Jesus, not that kind of Black, calm down a minute—“ “Now I have to calm down?!” “It’s not that kind of Black Museum!!  The original was in London, but now it refers to any place where somebody has collected artifacts from various crimes…on the circuit, you know, the world I live in…sometimes you hear about private collectors…” “You mean people that want like, a picture a serial killer painted, shit like that?” “I mean, that’s a mild example, but yeah.” “We’ve never seen anything like that come through.  You sure that is human skin?” “Yeah, it is.” “So what do you want to do?” Steve looked back at Jimmy. “We need to get this guy to take us to that place.” “What?  Why?” “Just trust me.  And when we get there, don’t stop rolling tape for anything.” “My contract says I’m done at 7:30.” Steve shook his head angrily. “Forget about 7:30!  We’re looking at Season 18!  Believe me.” “Uh-huh,” Yvonne said flatly.  “Season 18.” A few minutes later Steven and Yvonne piled into Jimmy’s panel van and headed towards the river. “You oughta do a whole show on the Choate Bridge,” Jimmy offered as they got closer.  “It’s one of the oldest bridges in the United States, if not THE oldest.” “Can someone take that bridge down and bring it into the Ipswich Visitor Center?  No?  Then it can’t be on the fucking show.” Jimmy just shook his head.  “It was just an idea.  And when did you shave your beard?” “What?” “He’s talking about Joe,” Yvonne threw in. Of course he’s fucking talking about Joe, Steve thought. “Never, Jimmy.  I never shaved it.” Jimmy blinks owlishly, then steers the panel van into a gravel lot next to a large, dilapidated building with the bridge looming close by, close enough that brackish water seeped up through the gravel all around them when they stepped out. Steve looked around.  “Somebody could urban renew this shit, put in a boardwalk, turn this into something.” “ It’s gotta fit in with the history, it’s how we do things around here,” Jimmy answered, as he fiddles the latch where a snapped-off combination lock hangs. Yvonne crowded in closer to Steve. “There’s some sort of shape over there.  Looks like a dead raccoon or something.” Jimmy doesn’t turn around. “I’m a plumber for the city.  If it ain’t got at least one shoe sticking up we don’t check it out.” Steve was about to ask Yvonne if she was rolling, get her focus back, when something came out of the darkness ahead with a sound like THWIP THWIP THWIP and suddenly the blackness around Steve was total. When Steve next opened his eyes something warm was running down his face, and he knew it was blood because Yvonne was directly in front of him and blood was running from a scalp wound on her head, too. Near her was a guy dressed all in black, with an ugly face tattoo, and fuck if the guy wasn’t swinging a bola from one hand. Jimmy stood stiff-legged off to the side watching as Yvonne stumbled in a loopy circle and carefully put the camera on the ground, seemingly in a daze.   Then the man in black uncoiled like a serpent and let the bola go, and the rope wrapped around Yvonne’s neck, and the two steel balls at the end clapped against Yvonne’s skull and her legs went out from under her, and she quit moving. Steve’s vision swam.  Jimmy’s voice, growing shrill, cut through the gathering dark clouds. “You said you’d let her go!” The man turned his gaze on Jimmy, who took an involuntary step back.  But he kept on with his protests. “You said you’d let my girlfriend go if I got him here!” The man in black’s voice skipped down Steve’s spine.  “I did set her free.” It was the last moment you have before reality sets in.  Jimmy licked his lips. “Where is she, then?” “Over there.” Jimmy didn’t want to look.  “Behind them boxes?” “Behind them…what didn’t fit in them….” Jimmy fell to his knees, his eyes rolling back in shock. The man in black took a step forward, pulling a six-inch blade from an unseen sheath and opening Jimmy’s now-convenient throat from ear to ear.  Steve watched the blood make a bright red arc before he passed out. When Steve awoke this time the man in black had been busy.  He had strapped Yvonne, still only semi-conscious, to some sort of torture device that Jimmy had described as medieval.  But the strained part awake in the back of Steve’s mind told him, despite the terror flooding all the other parts of his brain, that it wasn’t built that long ago, maybe as recently as the 70s.  Could have been a sex toy somebody built in their garage, or a prop from a chintzy b-movie. Steve’s mind snapped clear when the cold eyes of the man in black sought him out. “You’re back with us, junk man,” the man said, and Steve thought, oh, we gotta do this shit like that. Steve got to his hands and knees, then slowly to his feet.  He surveyed the torture device from a short distance, with a critical eye. “So this is a Black Museum.” “Your unfortunate friend Billy did not lie about that.  I’ve been quietly working on my kingdom here for some time, and the pieces are almost complete.” “That bola?” “It was used by a teenager in Mexico City in the early 2000s.  He threw it off an overpass through a bus window, killing the driver and causing the bus to flip, killing a dozen children.  He was listening to a band called Clowns Eat Little Girls and he said in court the music told him to do it.” “And the knife?” “It’s a Korshun with the serial number filed off, of course.  Translates to ‘Kite Bird.’  A former Russian Special Forces soldier used it to kill more than 20 prostitutes in the Balkans throughout the 90s before INTERPOL caught up to him.” The man in black lifted Yvonne’s chin with one pale hand and studied her skull like you would a piece of fruit in the produce aisle. “We will start with this device,” and something in the voice now made Steve’s hair stand on end.  “It was built and used in the early 70s by the man who became known as the National Road Killer, and many a poor hitchhiker with fewer prospects than this young woman spent their last hours here.” He turned his eyes back to Steve again. “But you can set her free.  All you have to do is assist me with the final pieces of my red puzzle.” “So I can end up like Jimmy?  Thanks anyway, dude.” Yvonne mumbles.  “Steve…” The man in black frowned, and his disapproval is like a hand closing around Steve’s throat. “The simplest switch on this device starts moving joints in ways they should not go.  Then it gets more complicated from there for your friend.” Steve barked out a laugh. “You got this shit all wrong.  She’s not my friend.  She works for me.  And you can get camera people by the bagful in New York.” “Fuck you, Steve!”  Yvonne cried out, her voice warbling with desperation. “It’s the gig economy,” Steve shrugged. Steve’s comment even brings this stone cold killer up short. “Do you not even want to know what I want you to do?” “Lay it on me, scribble face.” The man in black waved the Russian blade in a slow, lazy arc.  Then it disappeared with a whisper back into its sheath. “This is a grand blade, one that has taken many lives, but several years ago, an elderly man brought a knife to your show, and you sent him away after telling him that the blade was worth very little.  That man was named John Wallace Hansen, and he died last year.  On his deathbed it was alleged he revealed he had killed a dozen women with that blade, but was never caught because he had made a pact with the devil.  He was probably never caught because of his fabulous wealth, which he also ascribed to his pact. I believe that knife now rests with his daughter.  I want—I need—for you to reach out to her and offer to re-evaluate that knife. Then do what you have to do to bring that knife to me.” “Where does she live?  If it’s Peoria, it’s gonna be a minute.” “As it happens she lives very nearby in Salem, where you taped the program her father appeared on.” Steve shook his head.  “You got something wrong.  We never taped a show in Salem.  We couldn’t get in there this time either.” “You had a beard back then.” The pain in Steve’s skull cleared, but his eyes began to see a red haze. “I never had a fucking beard.” “It was many years ago now.” “I’ve hosted this show seven years.” “No, before that.” “Before that…” Anger flooded through Steve’s rubbery limbs. “That…was…THE OTHER GUY!!” Without realizing what he was doing, Steve lunged at the man in black.  His hand instinctively went to where he had seen the tattooed man slip the knife away and suddenly Steve had it by the handle and was pushing the blade upward, upward, and it went under the man’s chin and through his tongue and stuck somewhere in the roof of his mouth before blood began gushing out through his teeth. He fell to his knees as Steve had watched Jimmy do, and with that in his mind he picked the bola up from where it lay on the concrete floor nearby and pulped the other man’s skull with it until even the twitching stopped. Steve started undoing Yvonne’s bonds with blood-slicked hands and as he looked closer at the device it was a fucking good thing it never started up, he might have puked. “Yvonne, what I said, it was bullshit.  That guy was never going to fucking let us live after I did what he wanted.” “Steve, what I said?  I meant it.  Fuck you, Steve.” “Fair enough, I got you into this.  We both got hit in the fucking head, that’s not great, we both said some shit.” “But I did what you told me to.  I never stopped shooting. “ Steve stops untying her for a short, surprised moment. “What?” “I never stopped shooting.” Steve looked over at the camera Yvonne set on the ground when they first walked in. “Oh shit.” Eighteen months later everything was working out fine for Steve.  He wasn’t charged with anything, and the footage made him a kind of hero.  There was renewed interest in his show, but Steve got too big for it and now was about to host a special on a major network, live from the original Black Museum in London, with the current curator from New Scotland Yard answering his questions. He had invited Yvonne to join him as a producer but she didn’t want to leave the dive bar show.  She had ended up hooking up with Rich, so maybe that was part of her plan all along.  Rich and Steve had mended fences, and Rich told him Yvonne hardly ever woke up screaming any more. Of course, as soon as Steve was cleared by the cops he went to Salem and found the daughter and bought the knife with what savings he had left, though the daughter had heard the rumors too and was happy to get rid of it.  Not for fucking free or anything, Steve noted. The first couple of days Steve didn’t do anything with it, but eventually he went down to the dumpsters behind his Astoria apartment building at night and waited for rats.  A couple of nights after that and he finally hit one after getting pretty good at throwing the knife, and also having plenty of targets. The very next day a woman who had dumped him came back into his life and they went to bed together right away and then she moved in a few weeks after that. But before she decided to move in Steve was able to kill another rat with the knife and the next day an aunt he never fucking saw anyway left him a couple grand. So fuck it, he started figuring out this dark web shit and advertised the knife for sale to collectors.  And he zeroed in on a guy in Philly who bragged about having his own Black Museum.   Steve drove out there one weekend and this dweeb started showing him all the stuff he had squirreled away before he showed him any money.  Steve’s trained eye instantly saw his Hitler stuff was lumpy bullshit but the serial killer paintings were probably real so as soon as he killed the guy with the knife he took the paintings and a couple other things. The next day the network called about the live show.  So he was going to go back to the dark web.  These creeps shouldn’t be buying that shit anyway.  And guess what, he didn’t have to sign his name in blood in a book or go to the crossroads in some Southern town at midnight.  And if he actually did make a deal with the devil it was like he told Yvonne, TV was the gig economy, he’d probably already sold that shit. A lover of simplicity and elegance, Steve once said that, “The most sublime thing I’ve ever seen are the gardens around Kyoto.” To Steve, the ultimate Kyoto garden was the Saiho-ji ("Sy-ho-jee") - and most people would agree with him. The dream-like Saiho-ji garden was created by a Zen priest, poet, calligrapher, and gardener named Muso Soseki ("MOO-so SO-sec-key") in the 14th century during the Kamakura ("Comma-COOR-rah") Period. The Saiho-ji Temple is affectionately called koke-dera or the Moss Temple - a reference to the over 120 moss species found in the garden. Steve Jobs wasn’t the only celebrity to find zen at Saiho-ji - David Bowie was also a huge fan. And when it comes to design, there’s a Steve Jobs quote that garden designers should pay attention to, and it goes like this: “Design is a funny word.  Some people think design means how it looks.  But... if you dig deeper, it's really how it works.” And here’s a little fun fact for gardeners: When Steve needed his garden designed at his Tudor-style home on Waverley Street in Palo Alto, he selected the great English garden designer Penelope Hobhouse to install a traditional English cottage garden - a garden she could have, no doubt, designed in her sleep. Nonplussed by the request, Penelope’s son implored her to make room for the job. And when Penelope first met Steve, he made a unique first impression by rolling into the restaurant where they had agreed to meet on rollerblades. Although Penelope designed Steve’s garden, she never actually saw it. Yet she did write about the project in an article for Hortus - it was called, "Malus californica: or, A New Garden for Mr. J."   February 24, 2001 On this day, The Daily Journal out of Franklin, Indiana, shared an article called, Selection of State Flower Deserves Much Thought by "Bayou" Bill Scifres ("Sy-fers"). The article discusses the desire to change the State Flower of Indiana. “Well, we are at it again. Again we are embroiled in the state flower hassle, and rank-and-file legislators are telling us they have more important things to do than uproot the Peony as the state flower. Changing the state flower from the Peony to Fire Pink would be as simple as adopting either Senate Bill 57 or House Bill 2053, or both, to get the matter to the desk of the governor. But wait a minute. Is it really that simple? That cut-and-dried? Is this what we really want? Is the Fire Pink Hoosierland's best flora representative? Not native. That's the big rub proponents of the Fire Pink have with the peony. Foreigner. And they are right. Let's face it. We all are foreigners. Is it worse for a wildflower to have come from someplace else than it is for men? The thing that most concerns me is the state flower hassle revolves around the importance of nativeness. The real criteria should be the P&Ps of the issue, pulchritude, and proximity. Certainly, our state flower should be a raging beauty, but even more important, it should be accessible, very common, and be seen by many people, including non-Hoosiers who are just visiting. Fire Pink certainly is beautiful, but not so beautiful as the Cardinal Flower (also native to the state). And neither Fire Pink nor Cardinal Flower are even remotely as common as are several of the other candidates, especially the native spring beauty. Other Indiana Academy of Science candidates were White Nodding Trillium, Blue Phlox, Bluebell, Butterfly Milkweed, Bloodroot (a spectacularly beautiful flower, but not widely seen), Aster, Wood Poppy, Shooting Star, Wild Columbine, and Yellow Trout Lily.” Well, this effort was unsuccessful because today, the Peony remains the State Flower of Indiana. And there are many fun facts about this beautiful plant. In addition to being the Indiana State Flower, Peonies are the flower for China where the peony is called the sho-yu, which translates to “most beautiful.” When Marco Polo first spied the Peony, he wrote that the large blooms looked like "Roses as big as cabbages." As a symbol of wealth and a happy marriage, it’s fitting that the Peony is the 12th wedding anniversary flower. It’s also worth noting that a single peony plant could provide a century’s worth of flowers. Impressively, peonies can live to be 100 years old. If you receive a bouquet of Peonies, make sure to keep the vase filled with fresh water. Peonies are thirsty cut flowers. As for Peony plants, make sure to plant them high and have plenty of patience - Peonies can be slow to get growing. If you wondered why grandma had you plant your banana peels under the Peony bushes, it’s because Peonies love potassium. Potassium helps Peonies stay healthy and develop stronger stems. And if you want to help your Peony store up more energy for the following year, you can cut off the seed pods after your peony is finished flowering. Now, medicinally, Peonies were thought to help with pain, and they were used to treat everything from headaches to childbirth. And the childbirth connection to the Peony has roots in Greek mythology. The story goes like this: Asclepius was the god of healing and medicine, and he had a student named Paeon who discovered a root that could alleviate labor pain. This discovery brought Paeon notoriety, and Asclepius could not hide his jealousy, and he grew vengeful. Sensing trouble, Zeus stepped in and turned Paeon into a flower - the peony - and thereby saved his life. And to this day, Paeon, through the peony, helps ease the pain of childbirth.   Unearthed Words Visit a greenhouse in a nearby botanic garden for an early spring. Go to your local bookstore to see the new spring gardening books. Survey your tools, prepare them for their new season, and replace any that no longer do their job. While your plants are still dormant, prune summer-blooming shrubs, fruit trees, grapevines, and berry bushes. — The Gardener’s Almanac, 1997, February Chores   Grow That Garden Library English Gardens by Kathryn Bradley-Hole This book came out in 2019, and the subtitle is From the Archives of Country Life Magazine. In this instant classic, Kathryn shares her masterpiece that revels in the glories of English gardening. The publisher said this of Kathyrn’s book, “An unprecedented in-depth look at the English garden by one of Britain's foremost garden writers and authorities…  Kathryn Bradley-Hole--the longtime garden columnist for Country Life--takes a fresh look at more than seventy gardens from across England and distills the essence of what makes the English garden style so sought after. Seasonal photographs capture the gardens--some grand, some personal, some celebrated, some rarely photographed--at their finest moments, accompanied by sparkling, insightful text.  Featuring photographs from the unparalleled archives of Country Life, the full story of the English garden is here, from medieval monastery gardens to the Victorians and the Arts and Crafts movement to the twenty-first century.” And the Wall Street Journal review of this book said, “At a time when the very idea of travel is inconceivable, what a gift to be taken on an armchair tour of the great English gardens.” This book is 492 pages of the over seventy spectacular English gardens by one of the best garden writers on the planet. You can get a copy of English Gardens by Kathryn Bradley-Hole and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $44   Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart February 24, 1957 On this day, The Times-Dispatch out of Richmond, Virginia, ran a piece by Pat Perkinson that called on all gardeners to plant the Dogwood (Cornus florida) during the Virginia State Flower Anniversary. “Aside from their significance as the state flower of Virginia, Dogwood trees also are symbolically remindful of the colonists who first found them growing so prolifically here in the 17th century. Not only did they enjoy the bushy trees, but they also put the bark to medicinal use... combatting the effects of malaria. To get an idea of the conditions preferred by Dogwood, we have only to observe the situations in which they grow in nature. As you drive along the highways you will notice that Dogwood flourish in the shade of the taller trees of the forest. Perhaps you would like to situate young trees a short distance from the house where they will be partly shaded and where they may be enjoyed from the windows.” And here are some fun Dogwood facts:   In addition to being Virginia’s State Flower, the dogwood is the state tree of Virginia, Missouri, and North Carolina. Native Americans used the Dogwood as a phenological guide, and they planted their corn crop when the Dogwood bloomed. Both the roots and the bark of the Dogwood tree have been used to treat malaria. In Floriography ("FLOOR-EE-ah-grah-FEE") or the language of flowers, Dogwood flowers are a symbol of rebirth. Dogwood shrubs and trees are in the Cornus genus, and Cornus comes from the Latin Cornu, for horn, which references the dogwood being a hardwood tree. Many old botanical reference guides say that the tree used to be called the dagwood - as in dagger - again, another reverence to hardwood.   Dogwood trees actually have a hard white wood that used to be harvested to make skewers for cooking. So again, this is another neat tieback to the dag or dagger reference. This is also how the Dogwood got one of its ancient common names: The Skewer-wood. Another ancient reference has to do with the dogwood's fruit, which used to be called dogberries. And as one might suspect, a dogberry was not all that good, and the name implied that the berry wasn’t even good for a dog. Today we know that Dogwood berries can irritate a dog’s tummy. In addition, handling Dogwood or touching the bark can be a skin irritant - so wear gloves when you prune. This brings me to my last point... As with so many flowering trees and shrubs, when it comes to the dogwood, prune time follows bloom time. Every June, after the tree has finished blooming, you can prune the tree back to encourage it to set more flower buds. Never prune your Dogwood after winter ends or before your dogwood has bloomed because then you are just removing the bracts (flowers) before they can bloom in the spring.  So with Dogwoods, just remember: prune time follows bloom time!   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

For most pastors, there has never been a year filled with more turmoil, tension, criticism, and anxiety than 2020. Our congregations were divided by politics, masks, in-person gatherings, and the appropriate reactions to racism in our country. Pastors struggled with preaching through cameras to invisible congregations while making impossible decisions, where any choice would disrupt half the church. 2020 was filled with leadership anxiety, and many of us were never fully equipped to manage it well. In this episode of Craft & Character, author and pastor Steve Cuss talks with Steve Carter about his book Managing Leadership Anxiety. They review what anxiety actually is and how to best take care of your personal struggles while shepherding your congregation through worry and anxiety. Who is Steve Cuss? Steve Cuss grew up in Perth, Western Australia, and came to the United States to study theology. He and his wife Lisa have two sons and a daughter. Steve holds a Master of Divinity from Emmanuel Christian Seminary and is a spiritual care professional in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. Since 2005, Steve has served as Lead Pastor of Discovery Christian Church in Broomfield, Colorado. DCC is an innovative and entrepreneurial church that intentionally welcomes spiritual seekers and skeptics and is passionate about partnerships that break the local and global poverty cycle. Steve previously served at a megachurch in Las Vegas, as a chaplain at a level-one trauma hospital, on a ranch for struggling teens, and as a youth minister in the Appalachian region. His passion is to help leaders notice, name, and move through the pressures and anxieties inside them and around them to encounter the grace of God in deeper ways and build healthy team cultures. When Steve is not working, you can find him laughing with his family, knee-deep in a trout stream, or trying a guitar he cannot afford at a local music store.

Early Days of Security at Morgan Steve first began working in cybersecurity at JPMorgan, then known as Morgan Guarantee. He recounts the attitude towards CISOs in the 1980s, where many people didn’t really have a concept of cyber security or what it looks like. When Steve started, he had to change access rules and work against the resistance to PCs and Apple technology in banks. Listen on to hear his stories and how he overcame skepticism towards cybersecurity. Building an Active Community One of the many amazing experiences Steve tells is how all the data security officers from the NY banks would get together every three months. They would spend the morning eating donuts and drinking coffee, but also exchanging contact information, discussing what was going on in the field, and brainstorming together. Before Twitter—or even just internet—the CISOs would connect over breakfast and help each other out. In this episode, Steve recounts how 12 officers from different banks helped him make a deal with a difficult vendor. A Board Presentation and its Lessons One of the best, and most valuable stories Steve describes is in the early 80s, when he and his team discovered several PC viruses. When he told his boss, Steve had to stand in front of the Board of Directors with zero prep work and explain what computer viruses were and how they can impact Morgan. In under three minutes, he had acquired $400,000 to implement antivirus techniques. In this episode, he relays the incredible story and the life lessons he learned about communicating with executives and why being transparent is best. Effective Explanations Steve puts forth his theory on how most executives view themselves and how this influences the way in which you need to explain cybersecurity matters. He urges CISOs to go through everything carefully and logically, and to rehearse your explanation beforehand. He says your explanation needs to pass the “grandma test” before you speak to an executive. Listen to the episode to discover what he means by this.  Steve also illuminates why a lot of security people struggle to explain themselves. He points to who they surround themselves with and how they need to shift their thinking when speaking to leadership. Unrealistic Expectations and Stress on CISOs In this episode, we also touch on how studies have shown that CISOs tend to have high levels of substance abuse, divorce, physically poor health all from stress, as we’ve discussed in previous episodes. Steve believes the problem is in how we define what goes with the job. CISOs go in afraid of being fired after a breech, but the industry hasn’t accepted the fact that a breech will happen. Every CISO gets fired at some point, but Steve states that you should get fired for doing the right thing, not the wrong thing. He encourages CISOs to come into the job by being clear about what’s feasible and what’s not. To explain that there’s no perfect cure, but we can reduce risk, and build trust and credibility with the executives. Most of all, don’t make promises you can’t keep. On this topic of the relationship to executives, Steve encourages CISOs to get to know the leadership before there’s a problem or breech, so they know who you are when it happens. Let them know why you’re there and what’s important to them, not to you, by focusing on business risks. Present these risks as you understand them, their impact, and the ways you can potentially mitigate. To help buffer personal stress, he explains why the ultimate risk is on the business itself and not on you, and how who you are isn’t the same as what you do. What Steve Loves about the Job While there are many stresses to the job, Steve brings up what he loves most about it. He feels stimulated by the constant challenges and loves the cybersecurity community. Listen to the episode to hear more about why this community means so much to him and why, in his opinion, it’s the best professional community out there. Helping customers achieve outcomes from the products they buy from us is what services teams do. “Now...sales teams have to get on board with that,” says Steve Frost, vice president and managing director of revenue research and advisory for TSIA. “With all the uncertainty we are experiencing now, it's kinda hard to introduce something new to a prospect or customer. You’ve gotta provide some help and some guidance and value to the equation.” Steve explains that services team have been on this path for a while now, and it’s more important than ever that sales teams embrace this philosophy of providing help, guidance, and value.  Easier said than do, sure. But it’s not like we have a choice any more. The way 2020 is turning out, it’s more important than ever to double down on helping our customers.  There is no one more suited to help us figure this out that Steve Frost. Here are three things I learned from him to help us come out of this crisis stronger than before:  Refocus resources to market segments scrambling to deal with the crisisWe talked about this also with Keri Keeling (Ep. 194) that we need to look at customer segments that are struggling to deal with the current economic crisis and figure out how to help them. Steve is suggesting our services teams might be more naturally inclined to do this. But sales can do this too, and it’s about time they do. They can call prospects in the pipeline and change the tone of the discussions with an offer to help. They can call existing customers and ask how else they can help, even if it means not selling them anything new. It might just mean sharing learnings from other customers. Engage services in the sales processA first step in sales getting on board with this approach to helping, guiding, and adding value is to bring services team members into these conversations. A sales person could call a prospect (or customer) and say something like, “….in our meeting, I’d like to bring in one of our customer success managers, who specializes in your industry, to share with you what some of our other customers are doing right now….” Simple as that.  What customer wouldn’t want to take you up on that offer?  You are not selling anything. You are offering to help, providing guidance, and adding value.  Enable your sales team with outcome selling skillsI might be taking this a bit too far, but now might be the time to start selling money, not products or services. “You pay us $50,000, and we’ll give you $500,000.” Maybe I’m not taking this too far.  When Steve talks about outcome selling skills, he is taking about helping customers realize value when they use your service. And the value has to be in hard numbers. “Our typical customers increases revenue by $500,000 (or reduced costs by $500,000 or saves $500,000 worth of time from automation) during the first year using our product. Our product costs $50,000 per year. We can help you achieve these numbers, too.” I am simplifying this to be sure, but this is a much different conversation and explain why your product is so good.  That’s the conversation I want to have. Don’t you?  More about SteveAbout SteveBlog number one we talked about: Now more than ever, helping will sell, but selling won’t helpBlog number 2 we talked about: Spring cleaning for sales: Using the pandemic slowdown to make yourself better Blog number 3 we talked about: How sales and customer success can come out of the crisis stronger Get on the email list at helpingsells.substack.com

Raising goats became more than a passion for Rebecca. As she got more into the goat raising community she started becoming a known expert in the field. When Steve and Rebecca started goatfarmers.com they built an audience and people started asking them questions about raising goats. Then, Steve heard the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast and thought, “I wonder if a goat farmers membership might work.” And, after that the Goat Farmers Community was born. On today's show Shane is going to help Rebecca and Steve create an amazing member area where goat farmers from around the world can learn, connect, and talk about their kids. Plan a launch that will flood goat farmers into their new membership. And, set the price for their goat farming membership along with a launch discount offer. Rebecca Newlin used to be a nurse and has a lot of experience working with pediatrics. Switching from human kids to goat kids was actually not that different if you ask her. At the time the Newlins only had about 2 acres of land and Steve did not want any goats at all. Of course that didn't make Rebecca's desire to have them go away! In 2014, When they were coming back from a trip to Cape Cod Rebecca found a Craiglist ad for 2 Nigerian Dwarf kids for sale. As luck would have it the listing location was on their way home. After a trip to Target to get pet crates they set it up go pick up their first goats Mollie and Fergus. The process of having goats includes breeding goats. Sometimes you end up with too many and have some available. So their first real experience with business side of having goats was when they had extra kids and would sell them to people looking into raising goats too. Their biggest concern was making sure the goats ended up in homes where the owners were not only good to them but knew how to raise them right. The Newlins started going over those peoples' farms and help the new owners set up for the goats needs and teach them everything they needed to know. Those owners had tons of questions and realized they had no idea how to really get started. After answering the same questions time and again the Newlins realized an easy way to get all those questions answered was to create a website (it was bascically their version of a blog for farmers). Even though they had a website they never expected to fully emerge themselves in the online business world - but 6 years later here they are! Their website started growing and tons of people were finding it! That is when the Newlins realized they could help a lot more people than just the people they selling goats to.   What You'll Learn: Your new road to retirement. (32:30)   Show Notes Your new road to retirement. (6:20) Steve has been thinking about how he can retire for several years now that he would like to use an online business to help him retire. Of course he knew he needed to find a niche first. Steve had been helping Rebecca with the goats every day and would come back inside still wondering what he could do for an online business idea. It was right in front of him the whole time! Don't overthink it! You've heard us say it time and time again - use your God-given talents and experiences. They are unique to you and God gave them to you for a reason, use it!   Show “behind the scenes” of your membership. (7:50) Rebecca and Steve started dipping their toes into online business with their website which more like what we know as a blog. Then, Steve wanted to start taking pictures and video. Rebecca didn't love it at first because working with ani...

Title: Arizona Elk Hunting with Steve Chappell 11.34   Show Notes: These guys who are getting it done year in and year out can really help you build yourself into a better elk hunter. That’s why I wanted to talk with Steve Chappell from Elk Camp and Chappel Guide Service. Steve started as a guide back in the ‘90s in Arizona, and this family legacy has shaped his excitement for elk early on.   Herd bulls are all about jealously guarding their cows, so Steve has to trigger a response carefully from them. He says that herd bulls are more vulnerable than you think, so he prefers to use a display bugle. This sounds like a high, sweet note that then gets dumped down into that lip ball sound. When you put all of these sounds together, you’re going to get an aggressive bull coming right at you.   Modern hunting can help you find and track better than ever. When Steve is out tracking, he likes to use all of the resources available to him: Where they feed Their source of water Cow-calf groups Signs of rubbing activity Flatline maps OnX maps   It’s definitely to your benefit to read the situation so that you can be what you need to be on the hunt. I’ve hunted with guys who are more aggressive, and wow, the difference was amazing. We talk about the difference between being more aggressive and stalking quietly. Because he’s based in Arizona, Steve gives some Arizona specific advice around the full moon and the best rut days in the state.   I can’t encourage you guys enough; like us, give us a review, and share us with your friends. Help us continue to bring you hunting stories that prepare you for the different scenarios that you’re going to encounter out there.   What’s Inside: How the elk react to a full moon. According to Steve, these are the best rut days in Arizona. Distance is the determiner in the effectiveness of Steve’s elk calling. Steve’s tactic for introducing himself to a bull. In Arizona, Steve prefers morning and evening hunts.     Mentioned in this Episode: Days in the Wild on itunes Days in the Wild on Podbean Phoenix Shooting Bags Elk Camp with Steve Chappel   Short Description: Sharing some Arizona specific elk hunting love today, Steve Chappel talks strategies, tips and tricks for getting the elk you’ve had your eye on. As a hunting enthusiast from the age of 5, Steve brings a wealth of experience to the table about tracking, calling, and making good judgement calls about the hunting situation.     Tags: elk hunting, elk hunting in Arizona, Arizona elk camp, guided elk hunt, elk calling, elk bugling, elk chuckling, finding elk

Welcome to the very first episode of our brand new Replace Your Income podcast. My name is Kevin Clayson, and today, my partner, Steve Earl, and I will share how we started our industry-defying business, Done For You Real Estate.Today’s real estate industry is riddled with misconceptions, with new investors being overwhelmingly encouraged to swing for the fences. It may sound exciting to some, but it’s a poor “strategy.” And definitely not something you’d want to stake your retirement on. The reality is most Americans simply can’t afford to swing for the fences - the consequences of striking out can be devastating. You could lose everything you’ve worked so hard for. When Steve and I met a long time ago, we both were both drawn to a more conservative approach, revolved around replacing your income one property at a time. Our investment model was inspired by Moneyball, a sporting phenomenon that redefined baseball and showed that there’s a way of being competitive despite operating with a low budget. Using a safe strategy of investing in single-family residential real estate, we founded Done For You Real Estate. With over 13 years of experience and 4000 transactions, we proved that a “get rich slow” model, focused on hitting singles works time and time again. We were never in it for the flash - our goal was to secure long term success.Replace Your Income is our way of sharing the lessons we’ve learned with our community. Steve Portigal is the Principal of Portigal Consulting and an experienced user researcher who helps companies harness the strategic power of insights. He is the author of Interviewing Users: How to Uncover Compelling Insights. He also wrote Doorbells, Danger, and Dead Batteries: User Research War Stories. We talk about interviewing people, customer research, and storytelling with Dawan Stanford, your podcast host. Show Summary Steve started out in Human Computer Interaction (HCI), in the days before the World Wide Web and before the formal idea of user experience (UX) existed. He had a brief exposure to design as a profession through an article about industrial product design, and to the idea of bringing together people from many different disciplines to collaborate and create solutions to problems via another article about a project trying to determine how best to find a way to demarcate dangerous locations, like nuclear waste sites. These ideas planted seeds leading to his interest in design. Steve graduated with his Masters in HCI, had a summer internship in Silicon Valley, and eventually found a job in an industrial design consultancy to work on what was essentially proto-UX design with their software. At the same time, this company was exploring ideas surrounding ethnographic research and the idea of uncovering product opportunities, and Steve managed to apprentice himself with the team, where he learned about organizing and finding connections within data. He also had the opportunity to develop his initial interviewing skills, which he continued to hone as he started his own consultancy focused on user research. Steve was one of the first people in the early 90’s to develop design processes for user experience and research. We talk about Steve’s excitement for and interest in spending more time with stakeholders within a client’s organization. He has learned why a stakeholder’s perspective is essential in relation to the success of a project. He talks about creating “learning-ready” moments, how he helps people have these moments, and how learning and sharing the journey of learning affect learning retention. Listen in to learn: How Steve and others developed the design processes in the early stages of user experience and research  How Steve’s skills, interests, and the work he does for his clients has evolved over the years When Steve knows he’s found a great client Why he believes that learning together is when change can happen Why understanding stakeholders gives better results with clients Being able to embrace realistic expectations of what you can accomplish    Our Guest’s Bio Steve Portigal is an experienced user researcher who helps companies to think and act strategically when innovating with user insights. Steve is an accomplished presenter who speaks about culture, innovation, and design at companies and conferences across the globe.   Show Highlights  [02:09] Steve talks about his origin story and his introduction to the ideas of design and user experience.  [06:15] Steve’s first job at an industrial design consultancy. [08:15] Steve’s apprenticeship with the team exploring a nascent practice in what was basically user experience.  [09:58] Many companies were exploring and experimenting with these new ideas around user research in the 90s, and how that led to the development of best practices and processes around the work. [13:05] Steve’s litmus test for a new client. [13:37] How Steve’s role and work started to shift and change. [15:40] The way in which Steve sets up expectations with new clients and spending time with the stakeholders in a client’s organization. [16:20] The value in spending as much time with stakeholders as with users to gain a deep understanding of their motivations and perceptions. [19:03] Repetitive patterns and questions Steve sees with clients. [22:28] Using storytelling to help explain concepts and share information, and to help move clients through shared experiences and discussions. [24:04] Separating the value of the research from any action that may take place. [28:15] The importance of the “Why” of user research. [30:39] How Steve’s practice has evolved and the scope of his work today, now that many companies have in-house user research and design teams. How to Lose an Election in 60 Days with Patricia Pino

The UK’s MMT Podcast has been an inspiration to us since well before we launched Macro n Cheese. As fellow MMT promoters from outside the academy, we consider the co-hosts, Patricia Pino and Christian Reilly, to be kindred spirits. So it’s always a treat to have them as guests on our show. This week, it’s Patricia’s turn to explain the behavior of our UK cousins as we seek to learn lessons from their most recent electoral debacle. When Steve spoke with Patricia, she was still feeling intense disappointment and frustration in the wake of the Tory victory. Many in the Labour Party were in shock, trying to make sense of it all. Unfortunately, the most dominant voices are the least likely to admit fault. Attempting to understand Labour’s loss requires considering a multitude of layers -- economic, cultural and political -- historic issues of democracy which have been ignored for a long time. Patricia believes that the issues of sovereignty and perhaps even national identity, may play a stronger role in the UK than they do in the US. Britain joining the European Union was a blatant step in the continued abandonment of the nation-state. The challenge to their national sovereignty may appear to be less significant to the UK than to the Eurozone nations because the British retained the use of their own currency. Patricia explains that while the UK has more autonomy than the Eurozone countries, the government portrays the neoliberal policies of the EU as if they were mandated or part of an international treaty. The EU has no means of enforcing rules regarding deficits or privatization, but it applies enough political pressure to direct policy in a certain direction, simultaneously providing cover so the government can avoid claiming responsibility for unpopular policies. In both the UK and the US, elements of the right have tapped into discontent felt by marginalized members of society and gained a new throng of voters. Patricia refers to Jeremy Corbyn as a “Euro-skeptic,” which may explain why he understood the voters’ discontent in a way that other members of Labour’s leadership did not. Just as in the US, the party that was supposed to represent the interests of working people has proven to be out of touch. Labour voters had chosen Brexit; the Labour leadership was perceived as blocking it. The rank and file stopped believing their promises. As is always the case with Steve and his guests, the discussion turns to solutions -- specifically, how to deal with those people who are supposed to be on our side yet are still spreading incorrect analysis based on ridiculous assumptions, when applying the lens of MMT would bring things into focus. In the UK, even the so-called leftwing economists engage in the same kind of fear-mongering as the most dedicated neoliberal ideologues. Patricia clarifies that not all MMTers are Brexiters, but knowledge of MMT clearly illuminates the ills of the EU and the consequences of interfering with national sovereignty. Understanding how power is wielded through control of the currency naturally leads one to be an advocate for democratic systems of government. She suggests that she’s ready to step out of the functional finance silo and plans to start working with groups who may not yet support MMT but whose causes will be advanced through knowledge of it. With 5 years of Conservative rule to look forward to, she can’t afford to sit on the sidelines. None of us can. Patricia Pino is a London-based engineer, artist, and activist. She is co-host of the MMT Podcast and a founder of the Gower Institute of Modern Money Studies.  @PatriciaNPino on Twitter https://pileusmmt.libsyn.com/ https://gimms.org.uk/

Check out his website at http://crosscutlumber.com and follow him on Instagram at http://instagram.com/crosscutlumber. What exactly is a Woodpreneur? So, why the term “woodpreneur”? When Steve first started Acres of Timber three years ago, the wood community and industry wasn't what it is now.  Slab dealers, wood designers, and more specifically at the time – sawmill users, didn't have a community or a brand and were going largely unnoticed by potential customers who would look instead to the Home Depot and Lowe's of this world for their products. Steve sought to change that by creating the Sawmill Business Instagram account and the #sawmillbusiness hashtag as a way to share the products and creations that these innovative makers were producing. It didn't take long for the account to grow to over 136,000 followers and with a hashtag that has been used over 35,000 times, the Sawmill Business community grew and grew quickly!  As the Sawmill Business following grew, Steve began to notice that this community didn't just include sawmill owners. Furniture designers, woodworkers, arborists, tree climbers, chainsaw users, slab sellers, and even tree house makers became an integral part of the Sawmill Business family as well. It was at this point that Steve knew the business needed a new name that would truly encompass all that the wood community represents. Hence, @acresoftimber and the term “Woodprener” was born. With the maker movement now in full swing, there are more podcasts, content creators, (like Anne of All Trades) youtubers, and makers, (such as Matt Cremona) that are putting a spotlight on sawmill users, furniture makers, and other wood related niches. Not only has the wood community turned into a “maker movement” it's also filled with people who now view the work that they do as a profitable business and not just a hobby. A perception that was lacking without a community behind it. Steve Dale has a story that you very likely will be able to relate to. Steve had mentors but easily admits that none taught him how to run a profitable business. He missed out on hours of family time and vacation because he knew how to bring in work. The only problem...the work consumed his life. When Steve discovered The Pumpkin Plan and Profit First, he recognized a different, more effective way to run a business.  Steve is a Pumpkin Plan strategist and a big ambassador for How to Hire the Best - Contractors Edition. It’s important to Steve to show other contractors a better, more sustainable path as an entrepreneur. Will they listen? Steve Dale is the owner/operator of Angle Contracting, LLC in Idaho. After college, he worked as a truck dispatcher and then tried a cubicle with no windows for a short time. He quickly realized working for others was not his cup of tea. After marrying and purchasing a home, he dove into home projects. He merged his love of construction projects with his business skills to build Angle Contracting.  Listen in to discover the realizations that moved Steve from working too many hours, missing time with his family, and unable to juggle his workload, to learning some lessons and becoming a firm believer in the unconventional strategies offered in  Profit First, The Pumpkin Plan, Clockwork and How to Hire the Best.  Show Highlights: How the “Special Sauce” in the Pumpkin Plan changed Steve’s business and family dynamics. Steve lists the negative health effects of working too hard and too long and not enjoying family time. There is a better way! Dr. Sabrina, Mike, and Steve discuss what to do when you have the desire to share these tools with family, friends, and business associates, and they aren’t seeing the opportunity. Steve shares a compelling story about letting go of a customer who would never become a “big pumpkin” and how he was able to retain that friendship. Respect and confidence are natural outcomes of this system. Burning out is whole-body: physical, mental, and spiritual. It is not sustainable to run a business that repeatedly burns us out.  Steve plans to coach and also work on his remodeling business to where he can have somebody run it for him. We must keep craft alive. There are a lot of people getting out of the trades because they’re aging out, and there are not enough people coming in. Dr. Sabrina shares a personal story about hope and the appreciation for the kids wanting to have a career in the trades. Mike addresses how bad companies generally produce bad employees, and how great places to work generally produce great employees. Being deliberate and intentional about the clientele you work with is a big part of creating a great place to work. When a business owner is not stressed out over dealing with a client that is not a good fit for your company, that frees up energy to focus on developing your team. Steve sought to change that by creating the Sawmill Business Instagram account and the #sawmillbusiness hashtag as a way to share the products and creations that these innovative makers were producing. It didn't take long for the account to grow to over 136,000 followers, and with a hashtag that has been used over 35,000 times, the Sawmill Business community grew and grew quickly!  As the Sawmill Business following grew, Steve began to notice that this community didn't just include sawmill owners. Furniture designers, woodworkers, arborists, tree climbers, chainsaw users, slab sellers, and even treehouse makers became an integral part of the Sawmill Business family as well. It was at this point that Steve knew the business needed a new name that would truly encompass all that the wood community represents. Hence, @acresoftimber and the term “Woodprener” were born. With the maker movement now in full swing, there are more podcasts, content creators (like Anne of All Trades), YouTubers, and makers (such as Matt Cremona), that are putting a spotlight on sawmill users, furniture makers, and other wood related niches. Not only has the wood community turned into a “maker movement”, but it's also filled with people who now view the work they do as a profitable business and not just a hobby- a perception that was lacking without a community behind it. Are you trying to find ways to increase your sales without going the nightmarish route of launching a new product? Are you stuck treading water, unsure which direction to take? All entrepreneurs at some point or another hit a point where their product seems to be stalling. Steve Chou joins Kevin in this episode of Maximizing Ecommerce to fill you in on some of his best-kept secrets to combat this problem. When Steve’s wife was pregnant with their first child, she wanted to quit her job. Armed with a desire to replace her income—and after stumbling upon the perfect product—they launched their first Ecommerce business and the “My Wife Quit Her Job” blog. Steve branched out into podcasting and is the co-founder of the Sellers Summit. He’s got some great ideas, listen to hear them! Outline of This Episode [3:15] How Steve got into Ecommerce [5:45] Day-to-day running the business [7:30] Starting a Conference [9:10] Grow your business with these 3 tips [14:20] Driving traffic to your website [19:00] White hat options to generate traffic [27:05] Steve’s top tips for upselling [34:20] Scarcity and the fear of missing out [36:30] Find ways to reframe the product [41:05] Connect with Steve Three ways to grow your business People often continue adding products to their stock to increase revenue—but it’s a lot of hassle. You have to decide on a product, find a manufacturer, and deal with production. Why not work with what you already have? Steve says there are 3 key things you need to focus on to leverage your current product(s). Increase traffic to your product Increase repeat business Increase order size It is far easier to implement these three things instead of creating new products. If you want to hear Steve’s favorite way to get repeat business from an Amazon customer, keep listening! White hat options to increase your traffic There are some great options to generate traffic to your website that are off Amazon. Steve’s favorite recommendations are:  Pay for ads: If your product is searchable, use Google Shopping ads. If your product is something people don’t typically search for, then a Facebook ad may be a better fit.  Content Strategy: Blogging, producing videos, and podcasts are all great options. Write content that you can rank in search and help you build a following. Get people to sign up for your emails and market directly to them.  Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Consciously create content. It’s a long-term play and you will see results down the road. Take your SEO content and run ads with it.  Steve and Kevin go into detail with each of these recommendations. To gain more insight into the process, keep listening.  If you don’t ask, you won’t receive It’s all about the upsell. To increase your average order value, there are some great things you can do. You control how products are listed on your own website—so move the product that generates the most income to the top of your sales page. Stop organizing from the lowest price to the highest! Remember that people like to buy in bulk. They also tend to choose items that are bundled together versus purchasing separately. You can connect with customers who make bulk orders (because YOU get their information when you sell on your site). You can offer them a discount if they continue to purchase from you in the future.  Put automated sequences into place that immediately sends purchasers an email with an upsell. Perhaps there are matching napkins in a different size or another product that pairs well. Shopify users can use Zipify—it’s a one-click upsell that offers double what they just ordered for a discounted price.  Fear of Missing out and Scarcity The fear of missing out—now popularized as “FOMO”—is a powerful driver. When faced with making a purchase, or losing out on the option altogether most people will buy. It’s a tactic that works on both Kevin and Steve—so why not implement it on your website?  Amazon will often tell you (in bright red) that there are only a few items left of the product you’re looking at. Some people implement countdown timers. If the timer runs out, you lose your ‘hold’ on that product. Grocery stores give you strict time periods for deals: “Buy 2 get 1 free ends in two days”.  Steve talks about how you can reframe your product and shares more tips and tricks. Steve shares what it takes to develop cutting edge technology by studying the past, and setting team expectations that challenges conventional assumptions. He also describes the mission behind To The Stars Academy, and why “revolutionary is too mild a word.”     ~~~~~ ~~~~~  The Leadership Podcast is proud to announce a new initiative with thoughtLEADERS to provide very short podcasts called “chalk talks.” They’re “bitesize” hacks on common (but challenging) leadership issues.    You can only access the Chalk Talks by subscribing to our mailing list at The Leadership Podcast.    ~~~~~ ~~~~~    Key Takeaways  [1:44] Steve can’t talk about a lot of the work he did, but he did help develop the F-22 Raptor (the coolest plane you can ever see at an air show). You will also see his name on the patent for the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile.  [4:22] With high stakes projects, Steve had to make sure expectations were clearly stated before his team even began to work. When Steve was at Skunk Works, the programs he asked his bosses for were the ones that had a low probability of success.  [7:30] Writing down the operating rules and expectations presents it in a different context than just speaking it.  [9:02] Steve asks a lot of questions, but explains to his team the reasons behind it. It typically breaks down into 5 reasons:  Asked an earlier question, but it wasn’t answered yet.  Didn’t understand what you said, looking for clarification.  This is new, and I’m asking questions to understand the answer - and the context.  I’m educating other people in the room.  I am testing your conviction.  [12:27] Values such as precision, clarity, focus, and learning from mistakes really matter.  [16:28] Steve is the Aerospace Division Director at To the Stars Academy, and leads the efforts of developing advanced craft using revolutionary technologies that go beyond capabilities most can only imagine.  [22:28] Great leaders think beyond what is in front of them and dig for answers considering multiple perspectives.  [28:51] Steve was one of the Skunk Works historians, and it’s helped him think about futuristic realities.  [33:38] Three important qualities of a leader:  Curiosity and inquisitiveness.  Do what they say they are going to do.  Strong character.  [42:06] We all have failings, but recognizing and learning from them is the key.   [48:17} Two pieces of advice:   “It’s amazing what you can accomplish when no one cares who gets the credit.” - Ronald Reagan    Stand in the future to solve today’s problems.    Strategic Partner   Beyond the Uniform offers over 300 free episodes to help military Veterans succeed in their civilian career. 127 | Steve Sims Shares How Rapport Can Take You from Rags to Riches   Who is your ideal client, and how can you best build rapport with them?   When it comes to getting things done, Founder & CEO of theBLUEFISH.com Steve Sims is your man. He runs a luxury concierge company and if you take a quick look at things he has arranged for his clients, you’ll understand why his company is in such high demand.   Forbes Magazine called Steve “The Modern Day Wizard of Oz” but, talking to him you wouldn’t think that. Steve grew up a bricklayer from London and despite his success, is still very much rooted to the ground. Steve believes that relationships are everything!   Who is your ideal client? You’ve probably spent time studying them; getting to know what makes them tick. What will make them say YES to what you have to offer?    When you focus on serving them with everything you’ve got, and ensure that everything that you do is for them, you will see results!   It can be tempting, though, to branch off.    With my brand, The Pitch Queen, I coach accountants on how improving their sales will skyrocket their revenue. We work through the sales process, and strategies they can implement so they nail their sales conversations, work less, and make more money!   But here’s the thing: every entrepreneur wants and needs to learn sales! So sometimes, it’s easy to get distracted: “If I just expanded my offerings to include…” Maybe you’re looking at needing a big client, or you’re desperate for some revenue… that tends to come back to bite you!   Sometimes the answer is YES, you do need to expand! But you need to know how to read the signs and know when you are stepping away from your niche, taking on the wrong type of client, outselling yourself, and compromising who you are.    As an entrepreneur, when you are in your “sweet spot,” you will know it, and that makes all the difference in your business, helping you avoid burnout, and actually enjoying the process of being an entrepreneur.   This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered, Steve Sims, is a concierge of high-level experiences for the rich. If you want the pope to officiate your wedding, or to party with Elton John, Steve is who you call! He found himself reaching out to a group that was outside of his usual clientele, and had to say NO and reset his business, going back to his roots and serving others at his best.   Be inspired to serve your ideal clientele at your best: make sure that you tune into this episode of Success Unfiltered! The online business world sometimes feels like a huge party where everybody’s talking, but nobody’s listening. How do you make genuine connections with real people in a place that feels fast-paced, impersonal, and anonymous? It’s not as hard as it sounds. My FREE guide will give you the skinny on showing up as YOU, making connections with class, and starting relationships online that will lead to “IRL” sales success. Grab “How To Build Relationships Online: Your Checklist For TRUE Connections (And REAL Sales)!” right HERE! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Steve Sims. Self-doubt has been Steve’s biggest obstacle: why would people choose him? He went on a 3 day drinking binge because he doubted himself. Steve realized that he didn’t look the part: his clients would show up in Ferraris, and he’d be on a motorcycle. To fit in, he bought a Ferrari for an event in Monaco, and took a picture of himself with a giant luxury yacht in the background. When he got the pictures back, he realized: “that isn’t ME.” After realizing that he had sold himself out, allowing himself to be changed to fit other’s perceptions, he went on his drinking spree. He realized that he had put the dollar above his sense of self. “I was losing my ability to connect [with my clients] because they saw value in stuff that I didn’t.” ~ Steve Sims The key is understanding what your client actually wants, by taking the time to establish rapport. When Steve came out of his “bender,” he changed everything. Went back to his roots, his former way of doing things. YES, he lost money (he saw a 40% dip in revenue!), but he found a more satisfying life as he served his ideal client that he knew and understood. Your ability to connect with your clients is directly connected to your revenue. Surrounding yourself with the right circle is key to realignment. “We surf the tides that we initiate the swells on.” ~ Steve Sims When you’ve gotten out of alignment with your niche, purpose, and values, the realignment process is hard, and takes a lot of work. Find ways to remove the friction in your life. The advice that Steve got from his dad helped him as he realigned his business: “Son, no one drowned by falling into the water. They drowned by staying in.” “I was drowning, and I had the choice to stay in or get out.” ~ Steve Sims “You’ve got to have community….No one wins alone.” ~ Steve Sims Steve compares his experience to a very expensive MBA program. We’re attracted to shiny objects: it’s important to look at them and see, do they align with me? Are they a good fit? Do I even like them? If the answer is NO, then don’t do it! “If there’s all bells and whistles and ticker tape, it might be trying to hide something.” ~ Steve Sims Instead of simply asking clients for feedback, Steve starts out with “What did I do wrong?” This changes the way that they respond, and helps them think differently to give more valuable feedback. That way they don’t just gush and call it amazing. Steve shares what he would tell his younger self. Connect with Steve Sims: Website Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube PS. Welcome back! This episode is brought to you by our sponsors, Angela Landsberg, executive director of North Park Main Street, and Lara Worm, co-founder of Bivouac Ciderworks, a craft cider company with a taproom in the heart of North Park. Bivouac is currently distributed in bars and restaurants around San Diego County and will be releasing cans next month. This week’s special guest is Steve Billings, the owner of U-31 in North Park and the newly opened Original 40 Brewing Company on University Avenue, which Troy got the First Look at before it opened. Steve is a fifth-generation San Diegan, and he and his wife first got into the business when they bought Buster Daly’s bar in back in 2006, and converted it into U-31 the following year. North Park was a very different neighborhood back then compared to what it is now. Steve shared in the podcast that after just two weeks of opening his first bar, there was a drive-by shooting right outside the front doors. When Steve talked about opening up Original 40, he said his wife had two conditions: they had to serve wine and it had to be comfortable. Steve bought some comfortable chairs online and learned how he could sell wine out of a brewery. Steve gave us two picks for Two People, $50: Tribute Pizza and One Door North. Erin shared that she, after two years, was finally able to try Himitsu, a small sushi bar in La Jolla. Lauren’s pick this week was Goi Cuon, a new Vietnamese restaurant in Hillcrest dedicated to making spring rolls. Troy’s pick was Chiko, a Chinese/Korean restaurant that’s been on his radar for a while now—he said the orange-ish chicken dish there is a must. In Hot Plates, we talked about the fraud investigation of Gina Champion-Cain, who owned the Patio restaurants and Saska's in Mission Beach. The Union- Tribune released a story talking about whether or not her restaurants will be shut down as this investigation moves forward. The Windmill Food Hall just opened in Carlsbad, and this is the area’s first food hall establishment. It has 14 vendors in the 12,000-square-foot space including Cross Street Chicken and Beer, Notorious Burgers, and The Poke Stand. A new Italian restaurant, Siamo Napoli, just opened in North Park on 30th Street taking over the space where Il Postino was. And lastly, Restaurant Week is coming up with some great deals at over 180 restaurants all over San Diego! This week’s Hot Topic is an innovative Happy Hour happening in Finland, which we read about in the New York Times: A grocery store happy hour! S-market, a grocery chain that has 900 stores throughout the country, has a “happy hour” every day at 9 p.m., where they slash the prices of food that is about to expire by 60 percent. The store started this to combat food waste, and local shoppers the New York Times interviewed said they’re getting hooked on the sales and are becoming "regulars" at the store. In the podcast, Steve says that in his restaurant, he would much rather not have enough of something than throw it away. Thanks for listening, and we’d love to hear from you! Call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a message. Or if you’re too shy to call, you can email HappyHalfHour@sdmag.com. You can give us your recommendations for Two People, $50, tell us about any news happening in San Diego’s culinary world, let us know who you’d like to hear featured as a guest on the podcast, or ask Troy a question!

Steve Chou is the founder of My Wife Quit Her Job. When Steve’s wife became pregnant with their first child, she decided to quit her job to stay at home with the kids. But instead of cutting back on their lifestyle, they started an online store and made over $100K in only 12 months to replace her salary.    On today’s episode, Steve and I talk about that website, how he founded it, and how they were able to replace her income with a side hustle project within about one to two years of starting their business. Steve created a foundation in niche businesses, through traffic, lead generation, marketing and sales for his physical and digital products.   My big takeaway from today’s episode was that great results can occur by working with a chatbot through Facebook messenger. I can’t wait for you to hear Steve’s statistics to share about his experience with that feature!   In this broadcast, Steve and I talk about:   How did Steve enter the blogging space What factors attributed to the significant increases in growth for My Wife Quit Her Job How effective are affiliate offers for growth Why you should use a product or be familiar with a product before adding an affiliate to a post How did Steve’s e-commerce conference turn into a Shark Tank-style event What is working and what is not working for generating sales and traffic online The importance of using push notifications and chatbots  How to lead potential customers to opt in for your chatbot What is on the horizon for Steve’s e-commerce and blogging spaces  The importance of balancing business life and family life   How to Connect with Steve:   mywifequitherjob.com bumblebeelinens.com kidincharge.com   Get the Latest Broadcasts of In The Trenches on Your Favorite Podcast Platform:     Subscribe to In The Trenches on iTunes   Listen to In The Trenches on Spotify   Get your weekly dose of In The Trenches on Google Play     How You Can Support In The Trenches   Did you enjoy today's broadcast of In The Trenches? Steve Gordon became CEO of an engineering consulting firm at age 28, and he grew the firm's revenue by ten times in just twelve years. He's invested the last twenty years in the study and application of selling high-ticket services. He is the editor of four business newsletters read by thousands of CEOs, professional practitioners, entrepreneurs and sales pros around the world. Steve consults with businesses in thirty different industries, all selling high-ticket products and services in high-trust selling environments. He is a bestselling author, the founder of The Unstoppable CEO, and the host of the podcast of the same name. When Steve began his role as CEO of his engineering consulting firm, he knew nothing about marketing or selling services. Steve quickly recognized the need to study sales and marketing as a way to attract new clients and keep his business thriving. Steve now shares the hard-won lessons he learned with other CEOs and growth-minded professionals through his consulting business. Steve recognized that the same "sales" skills that work so well for product-based businesses tend to be detrimental to selling a service. Sales pitches are fine for getting a customer interested in your product, but they won't help you become someone's trusted advisor. That's why Steve developed the Unstoppable CEO and fine-tuned his marketing strategies to be tailored solutions for service firms. --- As the leader of a service-based business, the challenges you face are often very different from those of a product-based company. Growing your business has added layers of complexity because you and your team are your company's product. Marketing yourselves can be challenging, but your business can't grow or thrive without leads and without new clients. For this episode of Absolute Advantage, my guest is Steve Gordon. Steve knows firsthand the challenge of leading and growing a service-based organization; when he was just 28 years old, he became the CEO of the engineering consulting firm he had worked at since college. One of the biggest challenges Steve faced as CEO was that he had gone to school for engineering, not marketing. He didn't know how to effectively sell his company's services, so he began studying. Thanks to his hard work and dedication to learning effective marketing processes, he was able to grow his firm's revenue by ten times in his twelve years as CEO. Today, Steve and his team work with other business leaders to help them achieve those same remarkable results. On this episode of Absolute Advantage, Steven shares the major marketing challenges service-based firms face, and he outlines the strategies he and his team employ to help them overcome these challenges. He discusses the importance of narrowing your focus to marketing to the right clients rather than to anyone with "a heartbeat and a wallet". He talks about why improving your offer and being more valuable to your clients matters. And he shares organic and engaging marketing strategies that your prospective clients will actually appreciate. I hope Steve Gordon’s wisdom helps you supercharge your marketing.
