53: Building A Legacy Organization Through Nonprofit Leadership (Jeff Michael) SUMMARYEvery nonprofit organization has an upcoming anniversary, whether it’s their first, their 150th, or somewhere in between. While simply celebrating an anniversary may not help your organization achieve strategic success, it may well provide a unique opportunity to raise awareness of your organization's history, as well as elevate your vision going forward. That’s exactly what Jeff Michael and I discussed during episode #53 of the Path Podcast. Jeff is the Director of UNC Charlotte’s Urban Institute, a unique and collaborative organization that partners with nonprofit and municipal entities to improve all aspects of the region it serves. Jeff brings great insight not only from his leadership journey, but from how he’s embraced innovation during this time of virtual programming, and utilized his organization’s 50th anniversary to sharpen his vision for future success. He also offers great suggestions for nonprofit leaders on their professional development plans, and how they might partner with organizations like his to make a data-driven case for support that is appealing to funders and to the community at large. ABOUT JEFF Jeff received a BS in Business Administration and a Master of Regional Planning from UNC Chapel Hill, as well as a J.D. from the UNC School of Law. He is often called upon by the media and policy makers to draw upon his professional and personal knowledge of the Charlotte region to provide expert commentary on the economic, environmental and social issues facing the region. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Jeff has played a lead role in the creation of the Institute’s Charlotte Regional Indicators Project, and frequently lends his expertise in land use and environmental law to research projects. He also serves as acting Director of the RENCI@UNC Charlotte Engagement Center. Prior to coming to the Institute in 2003, Jeff served as Executive Director of the Wildacres Leadership Initiative in Durham, as founding Director of The Land Trust for Central NC in Salisbury, and founding Director of the Yadkin-Pee Dee Lakes Project in Badin. He was selected as a William C. Friday Fellow in 1997 and as an American Marshall Memorial Fellow in 2005. On today's episode of Fault Lines, hosts Jamarl Thomas and Shane Stranahan discussed the news of the day and topics like the political fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic to healthcare in Russia to whether libertarians have hamstrung Donald Trump.GUESTSPeter Lavelle - Host of CrossTalk on RT, American journalist | The Coronavirus ElectionRobert Wenzel - Economist, Writer at EconomicPolicyJournal.com | A Libertarian View on COVID-19Max Blumenthal - Award-winning Journalist, best-selling author, documentarian, and founder and editor-in-chief of The Greyzone | The United States is BadIn his monologue, Jamarl expressed his view that Donald Trump is unable to lay a glove on Joe Biden because of Donald Trump's poor handling of the COVID-19 crisis. Then they talked to TV host Peter Lavelle about Donald Trump's economic response to the COVID-19 crisis. Lovell said that the massive economic problems caused by the pandemic clearly have hurt Trump's electability, which was being boosted by a relatively strong economy especially for the financial sector. Peter pointed out that this economic objective did not help working people as much, however, and they have been hit by the coronavirus economy. Peter put the blame for Trump's ability on "libertarians" within the Trump administration, something he sees as going back to the 1980s Reagan era. Peter also discussed Russia's healthcare response to Covid, which she views as efficient because the government runs the healthcare system. In the second hour, Shane and Jamarl were joined by libertarian economist Robert Wenzel who gave a counterpoint to Peter's take. Wenzel discussed the dangers of inflation from what he says is essentially the government printing money out of thin air and said this is already affecting the price of food at the grocery store and restaurants. Wenzel also said he thinks the key to economic recovery is putting people back to work, especially younger people who he says are at much less risk of dying from COVID-19. He also expressed his view that people should be free to decide for themselves how they want to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. In the third hour, Jamarl continued his interview with journalist Max Blumenthal, who talked about what he sees as a media blackout on stories that do not promote a pro empire narrative, such as biased reporting on China. They also discussed how this media blackout corresponds to United States foreign policy; it has very few consequences for the politicians engaged in empire building. Blumenthal said he believes China is not only a threat to United States hegemony but has also become an economic threat.

Over the last couple of decades, a number of books written both by the academics and journalists  have appeared on many dysfunctions of the Pakistani state, a few of them even predicting why and how and when it is going to collapse. Against this grain, Ayesha Siddiqi's new book, In the Wake of Disaster Islamists, the State and a Social Contract in Pakistan (Cambridge University Press, 2019) is a forceful meditation on a number of key issues around the social contract, citizenship, and state provisions such as disaster relief and social protection. The book helps understand why, despite its many limitations, Pakistani state remains central to the lives of those it seeks to govern. Through an intensive ethnography conducted in the three of the worst hit districts – in the wake of the flooding disasters of 2010-2011 – in the Southern-most region of Pakistan's Sindh province, Siddiqi demonstrates that the state and citizenship, even when expressed in vernacular idiom which doesn't lend itself neatly to predominantly Eurocentric and structuralist sensibilities have meaning and resonance for the people. People look up to Sarkar (the “state”) both when they make claims for day to day provisions and also in the times of extraordinary distress. Though not always in time and effectively, as instantiated by the universal cash grants given to everyone who might have suffered in three districts of Badin, Thatha and Tharparkar, as a consequence of the floods, Sarkar also responds. Advancing a critical anthropology of the state, the book makes three major contentions: First, as already suggested, contrary to what the ‘master narratives' claim, state remains very much present in the lives of the people even in the peripheral regions of Pakistan. Even when state remains unable to satisfy people's demands, the fact that people have high expectations of it testifies to its centrality in their moral and political imaginaries. Second, since the local imaginaries of the state aren't that of a monolithic entity represented by a coherence of institutional structures and purposes, major political parties and local influentials come to acquire some of the key “state-effects”, hence relations of clientship, to the extent that they remain relevant to the socio-political lives of many, aren't necessarily an anathema to citizenship, instead they might actually be one of the constituent elements of a postcolonial social contract. Third, the specter of Islamist organizations coming in to occupy the space created by the presumed ‘absence' of the state has no real grounding. This is so not because the state remains very much ‘present' but also because the Islamists are afforded visibility only in so far as they are coopted by the state to partake in the relief activities. The book will be an indispensable reading for anyone interested in grasping the socio-political complexities inherent to the postcolonial states, societies, and their mutualities beyond the dominant tropes. Even when state remains unable to satisfy people’s demands, the fact that people have high expectations of it testifies to its centrality in their moral and political imaginaries. Second, since the local imaginaries of the state aren’t that of a monolithic entity represented by a coherence of institutional structures and purposes, major political parties and local influentials come to acquire some of the key “state-effects”, hence relations of clientship, to the extent that they remain relevant to the socio-political lives of many, aren’t necessarily an anathema to citizenship, instead they might actually be one of the constituent elements of a postcolonial social contract. Third, the specter of Islamist organizations coming in to occupy the space created by the presumed ‘absence’ of the state has no real grounding. This is so not because the state remains very much ‘present’ but also because the Islamists are afforded visibility only in so far as they are coopted by the state to partake in the relief activities. The book will be an indispensable reading for anyone interested in grasping the socio-political complexities inherent to the postcolonial states, societies, and their mutualities beyond the dominant tropes. Over the last couple of decades, a number of books written both by the academics and journalists  have appeared on many dysfunctions of the Pakistani state, a few of them even predicting why and how and when it is going to collapse. Against this grain, Ayesha Siddiqi’s new book, In the Wake of Disaster Islamists, the State and a Social Contract in Pakistan (Cambridge University Press, 2019) is a forceful meditation on a number of key issues around the social contract, citizenship, and state provisions such as disaster relief and social protection. The book helps understand why, despite its many limitations, Pakistani state remains central to the lives of those it seeks to govern. Through an intensive ethnography conducted in the three of the worst hit districts – in the wake of the flooding disasters of 2010-2011 – in the Southern-most region of Pakistan’s Sindh province, Siddiqi demonstrates that the state and citizenship, even when expressed in vernacular idiom which doesn’t lend itself neatly to predominantly Eurocentric and structuralist sensibilities have meaning and resonance for the people.
