The intervening decades have seen a seismic shift in how firms promote themselves, driven largely by the expansion of services and advancements in technology.Melancon emphasizes the importance of moving beyond the traditional domains of accounting, auditing, and tax. “The notion of us thinking of ourselves as trusted business professionals, not just trusted accounting professionals, has been critical,” he explains. This broader perspective allows firms to thrive in areas like client advisory services (CAS) and technology-driven advisory roles.

Training for CPAs must evolve to focus on the skills and experiences necessary to meet future market demands, the leader of the largest US accounting industry group said. Barry Melancon, president and CEO of the American Institute of CPAs, also defended a required fifth year of college for CPA candidates, saying current rules have achieved their purpose of elevating the role of accountants and turning out better-educated professionals. Melancon, who is preparing to retire in December, spoke to Bloomberg Tax reporter Amanda Iacone about ongoing efforts to restore what is now a shrinking pipeline of future accountants. Proposed reforms could soften the bite of the mandatory 150 college credit hours for CPAs to earn their license by offering alternatives such as employer-provided training or work-study programs. He also discussed the role artificial intelligence could play in closing the talent gap and the impact of private equity investors as CPA firms look to keep pace with technology advancements. —Produced by Matthew S. Rebekah Brown | The Rising Tide Lifts All Boats: Why the MACPA & BLI Want to Train Every CPA to be Anticipatory & Future-Proof

Rebekah Brown is the Director of Development for the Maryland Association of CPAs and the Business Learning Institute. Rebekah frequently presents to groups both locally and nationally on the future of the accounting profession and, as a certified Insight to Action facilitator, she has guided firms, nonprofits, and accounting professionals in the United States and Canada in their strategic planning process.   On top of all the work that Rebekah does, she’s just downright passionate about the profession, taking a “rising tide raises all ships” philosophy to everything she does to train and educate her fellow and future accountants.   Rebekah focuses on what she calls the three P’s:   People – “I develop people! I am passionate ... about helping people find their strengths and find their place in the accounting profession. So, on an individual basis, with each of our members, I want to help develop them and develop their careers.” Pipeline – MACPA is over  100 years old, and in that time they’ve learned that we have to be constantly thinking about and developing future CPAs. So a lot of Rebekah’s work involves talking to college students, high school students, and even elementary school students about the accounting profession. “So, I’m always thinking about who is our next generation CPA, who's our next generation member, and preparing them for the profession.” Profession – The MACPA isn’t solely focused preparing accounting and finance professionals in Maryland. “We really believe that the rising tide raises all boats. So, we want the profession to grow to be successful, to be anticipatory, to be future-ready. And so, as we do that all over the world, we believe we are benefiting Maryland, and we believe that Maryland CPAs are even better positioned to be future-ready because of that.”   Speaking of the future of the profession, there was an article in Accounting Today titled “Melancon: It’s time to reimagine accounting” covering a presentation that Barry Melancon, the President and CEO of the AICPA, made this year at the AICPA ENGAGE Conference.   My favorite quote from this article is when Barry says, "We've changed significantly just in the past year, and we're never going to see the pace of change that's slower than what we're seeing now. And, you know, we won't be obsolete, particularly, if we embrace these changes."   Just let that sink in. How does that affect you and your business, and how does that affect you as an accounting financial professional as we move forward?   I highly recommend reading the article and listening to Barry's podcast interview with Bill Sheridan on Future-Proof, a podcast for accounting and financial pros.   After doing so myself, I have decided to invest my CPE time and dollars into learning more about blockchain and artificial intelligence. I've been somewhat reluctant to do this, but I want to have this better understanding of this technology.   Resources: Learn more: MACPA.org | BLIonline.org Connect with Rebekah: Twitter | LinkedIn Listen to Peter on Episode 19 of Future-Proof & subscribe on Apple Podcasts   -- Change Your Mindset is produced by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices. 15. The Future is Radical: Embracing Innovation, One Step at a Time | with Jody Padar

We spend the bulk of each show trying to help accounting and finance pros become a little bit more future-ready – just a little more forward-thinking than they were an hour ago. And this week, we’re talking to an accounting and finance pro who already IS future-ready – or as future-ready as they come. Our guest this week is none other than Jody Padar, the CEO and principal of the New Vision CPA Group and the original Radical CPA. Jody is also an enthusiastic evangelist of all things new; any advancement that promises to make her firm more productive and to help her better serve her clients, she’s going to try it. Jody was one of the profession’s earliest fans of social media, she embraced cloud computing before cloud computing was cool, and she is deeply investigating things like A.I. and machine learning to see what they might be able to do for her firm – and more importantly, for her clients. It’s not just new technology, either. Jody also plays around with business model innovation and fixed pricing models. She is definitely pushing the edge of the envelope. In This Conversation We Cover: Why Jody, a Chicago-based CPA, is a member of the MACPA What it means to be a Radical CPA Why project management is the way of the future The first steps towards becoming Radical Incorporating social media into your business model Building innovation into the DNA of your firm Value billing & fixed-price models What diversity & inclusion means for Radical CPAs Jody’s vision of the future for this profession The First Step Towards Being a Radical CPA If you do just ONE thing to make your firm more radical and future-ready after listening to this episode, Jody thinks it should getting rid of the timesheet. That may offend your sensibilities and you probably won’t be able to do it in one fell swoop, but you can start small: just block of four hours once a week, or even once a month, to stop thinking about being billable and start thinking about what you can do differently. “Because if you have that mindset that you always have to be billable, you’ll never be innovative.” This doesn’t have to be implementing new technologies, either. Real innovation often consists of small changes to how we do things – it doesn’t have to be something huge or groundbreaking. We Need More Radical CPAs! We believe our profession NEEDS more people like Jody. To support that statement, we turn to some numbers that Barry Melancon shared during last week’s podcast. Barry cited a McKinsey report titled “Jobs Lost, Jobs Gained: Workforce Transitions in a Time of Automation.” That report estimates that by the year 2030, up to 375 million employees worldwide may need to switch occupational categories and learn new skills in order to remain relevant in their work. And that includes accounting and finance pros. Jody can be seen as a role model for all of that. She’s perfectly willing to try anything new if it’s going to make her smarter and give her firm a leg up on the competition, and most importantly, better serve her clients. “Same as last year” doesn’t fly in Jody’s firm. In fact, Jody has written the book (quite literally) on this profession – twice! Her first book was called The Radical CPA: New Rules for the Future-Ready Firm, in which she shares her story and a roadmap to move towards the Radical CPA mindset. Her latest is titled From Success to Significance: The Radical CPA Guide, and it’s a step-by-step handbook with hundreds of strategies, tools, tips, insights, guest experts, and case studies that will help any firm start moving towards a future-proof business model.
