How To Stop the Hurt (When Others Hurt You) When someone hurts you, it's natural to want to lash out and hurt them back. However, this reaction is often counterproductive and can lead to more hurt and conflict. Here are some strategies you can use to resist the urge to retaliate when someone has wronged you: Acknowledge your feelings. It's important to acknowledge your hurt and anger. Don't try to suppress your emotions, as this can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Allow yourself to feel your feelings, but don't let them control you. Take some time to cool down. Before you react, take some time to calm down. This will help you think more clearly and avoid saying or doing something you'll regret later. Try taking some deep breaths, going for a walk, or doing another activity that helps you relax. Consider the situation. Try to see things from the other person's perspective. Why did they hurt you? Was it intentional or unintentional? Was it a one-time thing or part of a larger pattern? Understanding the other person's motivations can help you react with more compassion. Focus on communication. Once you've calmed down, talk to the person who hurt you about how you're feeling. Explain what they did that hurt you and how it made you feel. Be honest and assertive, but avoid accusatory language. The goal is to understand the situation and find a way to resolve the conflict. Practice forgiveness. Forgiveness doesn't mean condoning the other person's behavior or forgetting what they did. It means letting go of your anger and resentment so that you can move on. Forgiveness is a process, and it takes time. Be patient with yourself and allow yourself to forgive at your own pace. Seek support. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, therapist, or counselor about what you're going through. They can offer you support and guidance as you work through your feelings. Focus on your well-being. Taking care of yourself is important during difficult times. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly. You should also do things that you enjoy, such as spending time with loved ones or pursuing your hobbies. New Happiness Podcast episode with Dr. Robert Puff, Newport Beach Psychologist

It's a wild and crazy world out there. So we'll be going over our ideas on how to tune it out and find some tranquility. In Episode #340 of 'Musings' Juan and I discuss: Ryan Holiday's book called 'Stillness Is The Key', Juan's definition involving external influences, a lack of stillness whilst reading a book about it (lol), tech distractions and why it's ok to let some vices remain untouched, 3 particular chapters worthy of note and why you need to be able to say enough (or genug in German).Legendary shoutout to McIntosh for supporting the show this week. Today's guest is one of my favorite….and based on your feedback from our first interview on brain health, your favorite too. Dr. Sandy Kaufmann is THE coolest expert on anti-aging and someone who just “gets us” women who are over 50. Because she is one of us. She doesn't accept ageist stereotypes and is carving out her own path to aging. She literally wrote the book on it, called the Kaufmann Protocol – Why We Age and How To Stop it. In that book she gave such an easy to follow, informative and entertaining look at the aging process and then explained the protocol she came up with using molecular agents (a.k.a. supplements) to slow this process down. And now a new book is coming out called The Kaufmann Protocol – Aging Solutions where she covers 28 brand new agents that you probably have never heard of and how to use them in your aging protocol to reverse and slow aging. Dr. Kaufmann started her career in the field of cellular biology. She got her Master's Degree from the University of Connecticut in Tropical Ecology and Plant Physiology. And then she turned to medicine, and got a medical Degree at the University of Maryland. And for the last six years she has been the Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia at the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Florida. Everyone in the biohacking world knows Dr. Kaufmann and outside of this world she's been recognized as “Best in Medicine” by the American Health Council. I first heard about Dr. Kaufmann on the Ben Greenfield Podcast and was so blown away by what I heard… I had to reach out to her. Fortunately, she replied to my email and has been incredibly generous with her time. I love her book, I love her app and use it all as a reference with my clients and community. I just love Dr. Kaufmann and all that she puts out for us. The town of Dartmouth, Massachusetts is in the middle of a mascot debate that's escalated quickly. Our listener Keith grew up there and his kids attend the high school in question. He's been vocal about his support for changing the school's Indian warrior logo but is wondering if there's a better way to solve this issue than trading barbs with the opposition. On this episode of How To!, we bring on Maulian Dana, Penobscot Nation tribal ambassador, one of the four federally recognized indigenous tribes in Maine. Maulian helped lead a decades-long effort that resulted in Maine banning all state schools and colleges from using Native American mascots in 2019. She has some practical tips to help Keith, and all of us, fight for what we believe in — without tearing our community apart. Key Takeaways If You Want To Break The Stereotype You Should: Start moving your body in a way that feels good to you Stop listening to the haters and find a way to push through the negative comments Remember that everyone is focusing on themselves, and you have nothing to be self-conscious about Work to lift up marginalized voices in the entertainment you consume Doing What You Love with Amanda LaCount Rihanna follows her on Instagram; she has danced with Lady Gaga in her Stupid Love music video and danced with Lizzo at Coachella. Amanda LaCount is making huge waves in the world of entertainment and is working day by day to #breakthestereotype. Don't Let The ‘Haters’ Get You Down Amanda has been dancing since she was 2 years old, but it hasn't come without her fair share of setbacks. ‘Haters’ have often made Amanda feel like she didn't belong in a world where your appearance means way more than it should. But Amanda never let that stop her and has developed her own way to move past the mean comments and embrace what she truly loves to do. Amanda believes that your body should not play a role in what job you get or how qualified people assume you are, and she wants to inspire people to do what they love regardless of any stereotypes you may or may not fit into. #breakthestereotype The hashtag #breakthestereotype is Amanda’s way to make change actionable. What started as something just for her has turned into a global movement on social media. Amanda wants other people to know that you don't have to be perfect, skinny, or tall to ‘make it’ in your chosen field. All it takes is hard work, dedication, and the right attitude. Working to promote inclusivity and body positivity in the dance world and entertainment space, Amanda, and her famous friends, are working to break the stereotype piece by piece. Every single human to walk this earth has lost the battle against temptation. Temptation can be tricky. The things that tempt us are always appealing, and it seems like it's not a big deal at the moment. Although temptation comes in many different forms it has the ability to destroy us, and derail our walk with God. So how are we to beat it? Is it even possible? In this scripture study, we look at the epistle of James and he clues us in on what temptation truly is and what we can do to beat it. There is a big difference between feeling positive about your body and the body positivity movement, but it can be a very nuanced topic to understand. While diet culture is part of a more extensive set of oppressive systems to people with marginalized identities, the body positivity movement has moved so far away from how it started. Social justice and body positivity are heavily intersected, and it takes some time to unpack just how deeply that runs in our society. Key Takeaways If You Want To Understand The Difference Between Body Positivity and the Body Positivity Movement, You Should: Educate yourself about the history of the body positivity movement Understand the systemic ways that people in marginalized bodies are oppressed Unfollow anyone who is co-opting the body positivity movement with disproportionate motivations The Difference Between Body Positivity and Systemic Oppression The body positivity movement has started to center around people who don’t represent the individuals that this movement was really created by and for. Although originally created for people in marginalized bodies, we have seen a change in the ‘face’ of body positivity shifting away from marginalized bodies and towards others that are co-opting the movement. While it is still totally possible and common for people in straighter size bodies to dislike their bodies and relationships with food, it is not the same as experiencing the kind of systemic discrimination and oppression that people in larger bodies experience every single day. What You Can Do To Stop the Co-Opting There is still judgment for people in larger bodies who embrace the body positivity movement in the same way that people in non-marginalized bodies do. By being clearer and discerning with the terms that we use on social media and in real life, we can stop the systematic oppression found in the body positivity movement and start including the people who might not look like you. With some learning, some listening, and some questioning, you can start to peel back the layers of the body positivity onion and understand the time and place of these hard things. How are you going to dig deeper into the differences between body positivity, fatphobia, and the systemic oppression of marginalized bodies? Share your thoughts with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode A brief history of the body positivity movement and why you shouldn’t co-opt it if you are in a straight size body (5:54) How social media has impacted the body positivity movement and plays into oppressive narratives (14:35) The difference between systemic oppression and discrimination because of the body that you are in (17:58) How movements aimed at people with marginalized bodies are being subsumed by people who they were not designed for (20:20) Suggestions to help you be more clear and discerning around your understanding of body positivity (24:27) Quotes “It is kind of important to bring up this idea of co-opting, and how it removes the emphasis away from the people or the concepts that it was really designed to support.” (7:52) “You start to see that predominantly thin, white, young, cisgender people who are being featured as the ‘faces’ of body positivity. And that is so different from the origins of the fat acceptance movement.” (15:46) “What I am trying to say in this episode is that yes, you may have negative feelings about your body. Even if your body is very thin, you may still have body dysmorphia, you could still have an eating disorder, you could still have disordered eating, you could still not like your body. But it’s still not the same as experiencing the kind of systemic discrimination and oppression that people in larger bodies experience every single day.” (19:10) “There is a difference between feeling bad about your body and experiencing systemic discrimination.” (22:23) “I don’t want you to just listen to me; I want you to really go seek out and follow and listen to people who are in larger bodies as a start.” (27:44) Featured on the Show Join the Tune In Membership Here Fearing The Black Body by Sabrina Strings Fat Is a Feminist Issue by Susie Orbach Join the Listen To Your Body Newsletter Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! What is the most shame you have felt and was it something public or private? 'So You've Been Publicly Shamed' is a deep dive into the topic of shame by the gonzo journalist Jon Ronson. In the book he interviews some notable people who have been shamed on a worldwide level (thanks to social media) as well as investigating the psychology of the people instigating the shaming. In his research he touches upon the role of technology, anonymity, privacy and the creation of an online persona.Kyrin had this to say about the book. "I quite enjoyed Ronson's style of mixing compelling stories, deep investigative research and personal observations all weaving through his writing. This book won't become a classic but it does raise some current concerns about how humans are using the internet and what could befall any of us. Some of the stories will arouse compassion, distaste and even annoyance at the actors on his stage. Easy to read and all in all I would describe his book as fun and interesting without becoming overly philosophical."Timeline:(0:00) - Introduction to Jon Ronson(3:00) - Public vs private shame(9:36) - Technology, anonymity and the mob(15:58) - Kyrin's observations(19:26) - Summary of the book(20:53) - Pragmatic takeawayAs always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!Connect with Mere Mortals:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meremortalspodcast/
Are you feeling shameful around your body and trying to use that shame as a motivator to make changes? I have some bad news for you; it is not going to work. Shame not only has a profoundly negative impact on our mental health, but it is also harmful to how we see ourselves as people and our ability to make long-lasting change. Key Takeaways If You Want To Stop Shaming Yourself Or Letting Others Shame You, You Should: Block and delete any negative talk or energy out of your life Get curious about where your shame and where your self-judgment is coming from Start to notice what is truly coming from inside of you Get clear on your personal values and your 'here and now' motivators Why Shame Doesn’t Work Shame comes from a very internalized place of believing that you are inherently flawed. Shame is different from guilt, which is a contextualized feeling about something you did rather than who you are. Shame is scientifically proven to be a debilitating emotion that can come from external and internal narratives that are systematically pushed upon us. Shame, especially when it comes from the outside, negatively impacts how we see ourselves as people, and makes us hide, get smaller, and remove ourselves. How To Create Sustainable Change Shaming yourself or hating yourself into change simply does not work and can greatly impact how you see yourself and others. Social media and the patriarchy are only exacerbating this issue, which is why it is essential to treat yourself with kindness and approach change in a way that feels good to you. Instead of operating from a place of shame, challenge yourself to create change in a way that feels sustainable and good. Block that body-shaming Instagram account, stop engaging with ‘concern trollers’, and get curious about where your thoughts are coming from. When you have patience with yourself and stop linking your self-worth to your body size or shape, real change can happen. Are you ready to stop using shame as a motivator, only to end up feeling worse about yourself? Share how you are going to tweak your mindset away from shame with me in the comments section of the episode page. In This Episode How guilt and shame play out in how you feel about yourself and changing your body (9:03) Scientific examples of how shame and guilt can impact your physical and mental health (13:15) The difference between guilt and shame and why shame is harmful to who we are as people (16:50) Why concern trolling is a serious problem for those in marginalized bodies on social media (23:20) Simple tips if you are falling into patterns of shame for yourself and negative self-talk (30:55) Quotes “Shame is a normal human experience, but this chronically feeling shameful can be really harmful for our health, especially the mental health aspect of our overall health.” (14:30) “That was so powerful, and really put it into perspective of why shaming people for their bodies does damage, and why shame for ourselves is really something to investigate and heal if it is persistent.” (16:47) “Guilt may be more powerful in terms of helping us make change, and maybe less harmful to us if we are really able to make things right. But shame, especially when it comes from other people, is so damaging to us, and it can be really harmful to our health, really harmful to our mental state, and really harmful to how we see ourselves as people.” (20:59) “Thoughts affect feelings and feelings drive our actions. So if you feel guilty, or shameful or shitty, generally speaking, how do you act or react? It is typically not going to be a change you feel really great about.” (30:24) “Getting clear about a motivator in your life that is coming from a place of expansiveness, possibility, curiosity, growth, and transformation is far more powerful than hating yourself into change.” (34:59) Featured on the Show Join the Tune In Membership Here Mindful Eating Tool The Scientific Underpinnings and Impacts of Shame Join the Listen To Your Body Newsletter Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Trigger Warning: During this conversation we discuss mainstream internet porn, porn addiction, porn-induced erectile dysfunction, sexuality, suicide ideation, and some graphic language is used. Listener discretion is advised.Like most adolescents in the world today, Gabe was exposed to hardcore porn well before the age of 18. What started as a habit driven by curiosity and a growing normalized culture around porn spiraled into a full-blown compulsive habit. Without expecting any sort of negative effects in his relationships as a result of his years-long porn habit, as a twenty-something, he started having trouble getting and maintaining an erection in real-life sexual encounters. Looking for answers, he found thousands of other young guys in online forums talking about the exact same issues he was having. Inspired to make a difference, change the conversation, and remove shame and secrecy among young people who struggled with porn and its proven negative effects, Gabe started Reboot Nation. It’s a site where anyone can go and join a supportive community while they “reboot” their brains and regain optimal sexual health by ditching porn for good. Listen to Gabe tell podcast host, Garrett Jonsson, about how pornography impacted his ability to be intimate with partners in real life, and how he’s since been able to create a supportive community of recovering porn addicts. A dead battery can jump a dead battery. Thank you for listening today. My name is Richard and I will be your host on episode number two of my promising life. And what I want to talk about today is just helping you to not be such a dead battery. And I know we don't think about ourselves like that. But if you stop and think about it, if you're trying to do something, and you just don't have the energy, you don't have the drive, so to speak. You need to look at what's happening in your life.I don't know, it could be something medically wrong. And if it is, please go see a doctor. But if it's not, it could be just, you know, bills, finances, or it could be relationship related or job related, even you might not be happy in your job you're not might not be happy in your relationship. And it's not helping you reach your full potential. I can say that's the time when we're a dead battery, and we have no energy and we can't do anything. Then we need to either figure out what's wrong and change it. What I'm trying to say is in my life I've seen many times when I have no energy. And I have a hard time I starting something but I don't go through with it and it kind of gets me down. And I also let life and work get me down. And I mean, I've got a good job, I'm not arguing that I could do better and I want to do better. And I'm going to do better. It's just I need to have this job right now to keep going until I get everything lined out. And I have other stuff lined up so I can be successful. So so you need to look at it if you're if you're not happy with your job. If you can, financially and physically emotionally, change it, then go for it. Okay, same way with your relationship. If it's the same way, if you're in a dead end relationship has got going nowhere doing the same thing over and over are experienced the same stuff, then you might want to think about seeing a counselor and seeing if it can be repaired or if it can't. Now, if you go to mypromisinglife.com, which is my blog, it will have a link to a book that I found a long time ago and helped me a lot is called How To Stop worrying and start living by Dale Carnegie. Identify the areas that you need work in and work on those. If you need help?, reach out to a trusted family member, preacher, counselor, or anyone who you think might be able to help you.You are special just the way you are and you should celebrate that, let me know what works for you or if I can help in any way. Happy May Day, everyone! Welcome to Episode 5 of No Wall They Can Build, the Ex-Worker Podcast's serialized audiobook exploring borders and migration across North America. Having discussed the political and economic forces that drive migration north, this week's installment examines how people get from Central America to the US/Mexico border. The routes vary in risk and cost, and are stratified depending on a traveler's wealth and nationality, from navigating the expensive and infuriating process of attempting to secure a visa to braving La Bestia, the notoriously dangerous freight trains heading north. Some hazard the northeastern route to Reynosa through Zetas cartel territory, while many traverse the northwestern route to Altar through Sinaloa cartel lands and towards the Sonoran desert. The “unaccompanied minors crisis” of 2013–2014 serves as a case study for how the machinations of powerful states, cartels, and corporations can impact the lives of migrants. Understanding the dynamics of border crossing requires an in-depth look at the economics of the marijuana trade, concluding with a thought-provoking analysis of politics of drug legalization and an unflinching look at the customs and border patrol corruption that makes the trade possible. This episode reframes our understanding of the multi-stage process of migrating north and the power relations and economic imperatives that shape the experiences of migrants as they set off into the desert towards the United States. {May 1, 2019} -------SHOW NOTES------ Table of Contents: Introduction {0:01} L.A. Neuroscience, Unemployment, Finance, Cancer and more with Today's Co-Host:Yuri is a Fortune 500 Personal Development Consultant, board member, startup advisor and official member of the Forbes Coaches Council and Forbes contributor. A regular guest on top podcasts such as Entrepreneur on Fire, As Told By Nomads, Conscious Millionaire, and The Blind Entrepreneur, he's also been published or featured on Inc., Fast Co., Time, Mashable, PBS, BBC and numerous top blogs, as well as radio and TV shows. More about Yuri:As far as crazy stories go, I changed careers a total of 4 times while living with $250K in law school debt in NYC, ultimately building the Millennial startup consulting and executive coaching business I run today, Master The Talk Consulting ( MasterTheTalk.com (http://masterthetalk.com/) ). I've overcome tremendous challenges several times in my life and help my clients do the same through changing their language and psychology. With a background in neuroscience and anthropology, I specialize in helping Millennial and Gen Z clients challenge their conventional thinking about how to dramatically improve the trajectory of their thinking, careers, and businesses. In just a short 15 months, I've bootstrapped it from a side hobby to a $200K+/year business, as well as getting myself published or featured in Forbes, HuffPost, Inc., Fast Co., Mashable, BBC, PBS, and others. My story is crazier than most, even for a Millennial. To get to my "dream career," I started out in a neuroscience Ph.D., left for studying law, got into finance, then into health tech startups and eventually started Master The Talk. In between, unemployment, depression, starting a family, living in NYC with $250K in law school debt, a kid with cancer, and still making life and business work somehow.
