This week, we're talking about "3:10 TO YUMA"—a film that's badassery doesn't get enough praise. We'll break down its themes, explore deeper meanings behind the scenes, and discuss character motivations. Plus, we'll talk a little sh*t. "3:10 TO YUMA" is about: Outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) terrorizes 1800s Arizona, especially the Southern Railroad, until he is finally captured. Wade must be brought to trial, so Dan Evans (Christian Bale), the owner of a drought-stricken ranch, volunteers to escort him to the train. Along the trail, a grudging respect forms between the men, but danger looms at every turn, and the criminal's men are in pursuit. Peckerwood novelist and Hardboiled Wonderland blogger Jed Ayres returns to the podcast this week for a two-hour extravaganza devoted to the man famously dubbed "the poet laureate of wild assholes with revolvers," Mr. Elmore Leonard. One of the godfathers of contemporary crime fiction and an influence on every single writer working in the genre today (whether they realize it or not), Jed and I investigate the western genre that launched the Navy vet lovingly nicknamed Dutch. Revisiting a few films you've heard discussed on Watch With Jen in the past, including 3:10 TO YUMA and THE TALL T (both from 1957), we then explore some of the revisionist westerns made from his books or penned directly for the screen by Leonard in the late '60s and early '70s, including HOMBRE, THE MOONSHINE WAR, VALDEZ IS COMING, and JOE KIDD. A perfect way to kick off Noirvember since these are indeed works of Western noir, after these films were released at the end of the genre's heyday, Elmore Leonard moved to crime fiction. Fans of the author's work won't want to miss what is likely just the first of multiple eps devoted to Leonard. A full "DejaView" episode this week as Morgan and Jeannine get into the sweaty intensity of Delmer Daves' noirish Western 3:10 TO YUMA (1957) starring a very on brand Ven Heflin and a devilishly against type Glenn Ford; and compare it to the dusty desperation of James Mangold's 2007 remake starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe! One focussed on subtly menacing charm resulting in an optimistic ending with mutual human understanding; one focussed on brutality and struggle resulting in an ending full of pity and heartbreak! Hello everyone! We are interrupting our LISTENER REQUEST MONTH to bring you a very special episode that we hope to bring you only 3 times a year:  a BIRTHDAY episode! The Birthday Episode's will be brought to you by the Birthday Dad, who creates the whole show around a theme that he has chosen. Jesse has crafted an episode about 3 movies he saw with his father: Gallipoli (1981), 3:10 To Yuma (2007) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). Included with a general goofing around involving those three movies, Jesse also asked us 3 questions; what scene in a movie makes you grab your kids and sit them down to watch it with you; what is a "Black Sheep" movie for you; and what genre of movie will your kids associate with you?  Stay tuned for a full-length episode on Hellboy II in the next month or so with a very special, first-time guest, and 3:10 To Yuma in a future season of NYFM. Let us know if you enjoy this different kind of episode! It was a ton of fun for us to record.   Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com Visit our website at nyfmovies.comFind our socials and places to download in our LINKTREE

Apologies for the audio issues on this one...for the first half of the episode my (Matt's) mic is very quiet so I had to do some obvious editing to bring my voice out. At the halfway point everything clears up!...luckily I didn't say much in the first half, so it's not that big a deal. We start with our runners' up from 2006... Then - 2007. A year that saw a rivalry between 'There Will Be Blood' and 'No Country for Old Men'. Tim, as you will remember from Episode 80, is the author of Catholic Republic: How America Will Perish Without Rome and the co-host with Dr. Taylor Marshall on their popular podcast/YouTube channel. This is a free-wheeling dueling rants about Christmas classics and clunkers from the point of view of cinephilic Catholic dads. Say what you like, but our opinions are correct, I tell you. Well, mine are...   Movies mentioned in this episode: Here are the movies we discuss with brio, while openly ribbing each other because, well, Advent is penitential:   It’s a Wonderful Life Elf Meet John Doe A Christmas Story The Bishop’s Wife Miracle of 34th Street Die Hard Love, Actually (pornish as is-- use VidAngel!) A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott) Disney’s A Christmas Carol (Jim Carrey) Joyeux Noel Departures Special mention of the remake of 3:10 To Yuma, no extra charge.   And don’t worry, no Christmas movies involving Tim Allen were mentioned. John and Adam catch the last 3:10 To Yuma to give freaks and friday love, pity Alan Tudyk, and wonder if No Country For Old Men was actually a dream.  Then James, Mike, John, and Adam jump on the first train with unsubstantiated proof that Entertainment Weekly is on drugs.  Plus good old films vs. bad old films and musings on the political machinations for the position of town drunk. If you have a comment or question you can write us at theaftershowpodcast@gmail.com or call and leave a message at (206) 984-1298.  Thanks for listening.3:10 TO YUMA (1957) imdb Page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050086/3:10 TO YUMA (2007) imdb Page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381849/ The AfterShow No.40 3:10 TO YUMA (1957 & 2007) by Due South Productions is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License.
