When English singer/songwriter Nick Drake released his ambitious second album - 'Bryter Layter' - in 1971, he all-but-squashed any chance of commercial success by failing to promote it. Three years later the troubled artist was gone. This week's guest, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Paul Chastain (Velvet Crush, The Small Square), helps us unpack this evocative collection of songs featuring musical backing by members of Fairport Convention, The Beach Boys and John Cale among others. Essential listening. Songs discussed in this episode: Tomorrow Is A Long Time (Bob Dylan Cover) - Nick Drake; Hold Me Up - Velvet Crush; Twenty-Third - The Small Square; Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys; Rosie - Fairport Convention; Holocaust - Big Star; Introduction, Hazey Jane II, From The Morning, At The Chime Of A City Clock - Nick Drake; Forever Instant - Lou Barlow (Sentridoh); One Of These Things First - Nick Drake; All I Want To Do - The Beach Boys; Pink Moon, Hazey Jane I - Nick Drake; Heartbeats-Jose Gonzalez; Bryter Layter, The Fly - Nick Drake; Stephanie Says - The Velvet Underground; Poor Boy - Nick Drake; Marianne - Leonard Cohen; Northern Sky, Sunday - Nick Drake; It'll Take A Long Time - Sandy Denny; Baby Face - The Small Square
Jukebox, bunte Klamotten, Biker, Discokugel. ~DJ Kahuna 1. Callinan-Flynn - Freedom's Lament 2. Why are black people so rarely seen in British Folk Music, apart from the apparent and questionable guise of the Blackface traditions that we still see practiced today? What does belonging look like in a genre that has historically excluded those not considered White-British? In this podcast, singer-songwriter, and researcher, Marie Bashiru, looks into the question of why Black people are so rarely seen in British Folk Music, historically and present; especially in comparison to our American counterparts in this genre. Shining a lens on the era of Blackface Minstrelsy in Britain during the 19th and 20th century as the phenomenon medium of folk music it was of its time, and its legacy today; as well as engaging conversation with various Black British folk musicians and practitioners, this podcast delves deeper into what it means to be a black folk musician in Britain, historically, now in the 21st century, and what it could look like moving forward. To continue the conversation, and for the full list of all music excerpts featured, including the research's full bibliography, head over to https://www.mariebashiru.com, or alternatively, you can find me on all social media platforms, via @mariebashiru. Time Stamps: Introduction – 00:00:00 – 00:02:48 Chapter One: What Is Folk Music? - 00:02:49 - 00:07:31 This chapter does a short exploration of folksong's origins, setting the stage and laying the foundation for those unfamiliar with folk music as a genre to give some historical background and context. Chapter Two: Black People in Britain - 00:00:07:32 – 00:24:17 In this chapter, we explore what Black British history has historically looked like from the first recorded presence around the third century AD; beyond the usual de-facto narrative of the transatlantic slave trade, and the common misconception black people have only existed in large numbers in Britain since the 20th century. Chapter Three: Blackface Minstrelsy in Britain – 00:24:18 – 00:49:01 This chapter explores the phenomenon era of Blackface Minstrelsy in Britain, its usage of the medium of folk music, and its impact and legacy it has had on British identity. The cross-cultural exchange of folk music within empire and the Americas, a key component of this era, and the folk music we hear today in these regions. Chapter Four: Black British Folk Music – 00:49:02 – 01:10:40 This chapter focuses on the stories of three Black folk musicians, two of whom are Black British and one now based in England; speaking of their experiences in the folk genre, the impact of Britain's denial of its hostile past and present, and how the folk stories of Black British people can be retold, and written anew. On the latest Classic Album Sundays podcast, we step back to Camp Bestival from a few years ago when Nick Drake's producer Joe Boyd joined us to discuss ‘Five Leaves Left' in length with Colleen. Alongside Joe's production the album features Richard Thompson (of Fairport Convention) and Danny Thompson (of Pentangle) as well as the beautiful string arrangements of Robert Kirby. Despite being championed by John Peel, the album initially sold less than 6,000 copies. Now, over four decades since Drake's death, Five Leaves Left is seen as an iconic album in British Folk music and his songs are cited as an influence by Peter Buck of REM and Robert Smith of The Cure. Dylan, William, and special guest David Annandale break down eccentric British horror movies dealing with paganism and the rural occult, like The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General. Featuring an interview with Gary Parsons, a filmmaker and film historian specializing in English witchcraft documentaries, who tells us about lesser-known witch flicks from the sixties and seventies, and explains the British counterculture's fascination with occultism at that time. We compare and contrast some surprisingly varied titles – involving skin-pilfering demons and undead bikers – while telling stories about the filmmakers, the time period, and generally exploring everything about these folking weird movies.
For our fourth season premiere, we've recruited a long-time friend and newly published author George Hares to explore the intriguing world of British Folk Magic with us. "Click Click Domino" Christopher Turpin and Stephanie Jean were in the Bath-based alternative rock band Kill It Kid who put out three fabulous albums. With a sonic attack that fell somewhere between Nirvana and The White Stripes, Kill It Kid were a ferocious live act that radiated intensity and heart. After the band called it a day Turpin and Jean formed the duo Ida Mae. Influenced by Delta Blues, JJ Cale, John Martyn and obscure British Folk, the band hit the ground running with their 2019 debut Chasing Lights. Having left their native England for the rich musical soil of Nashville, the band dug in and got to work, playing shows all over the world, including the Newport Folk Festival and opening slots for Willie Nelson, Greta Van Fleet and Blackberry Smoke. They've recored with M. Ward and T Bone Burnett, been hailed by everyone from American Songwriter to Rolling Stone and the release of their sophomore album Click Click Domino has cemented them as one of the most exciting bands around. A wicked blend of bluesy howl, folky finesse and affecting harmonies, the husband and wife team of Ida Mae bring to mind everyone from Fleetwood Mac to The Record Company. In this intimate chat, the two talk to Alex about their record collections, family support and how to do a Meet and Greet in a COVID world…. www.idamaemusic.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Olivia Chaney is part of the latest wave of British folk music, although her definition of “folk” is as likely to include Baroque music, Norwegian jazz, and original songs as it is old murder ballads or sea shanties. Chaney plays an assortment of instruments, including guitar and piano, and has a strikingly pure vocal tone. Her debut full-length, The Longest River, is on Nonesuch Records, and while performing a brief set at a Nonesuch 50th anniversary event in 2014, she so impressed her label-mate Robert Plant that he asked her to open for him during his 2015 run of shows at BAM. Olivia Chaney performs three of her own songs, in-studio, in this session from the archives.
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing John Smith over Zoom video! Against the backdrop of a universally difficult 2020, songwriter and guitarist John Smith found himself facing personal and unrelenting change. In the spring of 2020, Smith and his wife lost a pregnancy, and his mother was diagnosed with cancer. With his touring schedule of two hundred days a year on the road suddenly on indefinite hiatus, for the first time in over a decade, John was home. “With newfound pain coming from so many directions, dealing with the uncertainty it brings, I closed the curtains and picked up the pen, turning to songwriting as a lifeline.” It’s unsurprising that the new songs reflect a shift in priorities. On his new album ‘The Fray’, Smith gives us an uplifting perspective on the path forward, but pays beautiful homage to the difficulties along the way. ‘The Fray’ is Smith’s sixth studio album, and his vulnerability throughout is offered to his listeners, unadorned. “It’s been a hell of a year, but I feel I’ve created my most honest work as a result, and as a necessity. A lot of these songs are about accepting that life is hard, but just holding on and trying to enjoy it anyway.” Smith’s stubborn optimism in tough circumstances shines through on the title track, in which he sings “Holding onto hope / I don’t need a decent reason / Yes and though it disappears sometimes / It returns with every season”. On the upbeat opening track “Friends”, he gives a nod to old friendships, and the importance of maintaining connections in troubled times, singing “When the weight of the world gets heavy / You don’t have to bear it alone /I know that burden and I’ll be ready / To stop what I’m doing /I’ll be there to help with the load” Despite his hopefulness, the emotional turmoil that Smith has faced this year is visceral throughout the album, as is his observance of the pain of those around him. On “She’s Doing Fine”, a delicate guitar underpins the lines “Walking slowly / The pain of the memory / Fades in the eyes”. A melancholy flugelhorn seems to cry out for hope in the darkness as it plays out the song. Smith co-wrote a couple of songs for the album whilst on tour before the pandemic. Driving a rental car from Asheville to Nashville, John stopped to write the standout track ‘Eye to Eye’ with North Carolina-based Sarah Siskind. The Americana influence is a red thread throughout the album which beautifully compliments Smith’s unmistakeable British Folk roots. Smith co-produced ‘The Fray’ with long-time friend and producer Sam Lakeman. They recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studio, with pianist Jason Rebello (Sting, John Mayer), bass player Ben Nicholls (Seth Lakeman, Nadine Shah), Drummer Jay Sikora (Paolo Nutini) and Jessica Staveley-Taylor of The Staves. The album is a true reflection of the times, with American collaborators Sarah Jarosz, Courtney Hartman, The Milk Carton Kids and Bill Frisell recording remotely and sending contributions over international borders. John’s frequent touring partner Lisa Hannigan contributed via a virtual studio session in Dublin. Smith was born in Essex and raised on the Devon seaside. Known for his intimate songwriting, his honey-on-gravel voice and pioneering guitar playing, he has spent the last fifteen years touring internationally and has amassed over 40 million streams on Spotify. As a session musician he has played guitar with artists as diverse as Joan Baez, David Gray, Joe Henry, Lianne La Havas and Tom Jones. We want to hear from you! Various musicians have started out in the underground and left it behind for commercial mainstream success. Few have deliberately taken the opposite route back into the counterculture - and rarely as repeatedly as our guest Stephen Duffy. Stephen formed, and left, Duran Duran, had chart success in both the 80s and the 90s as a solo artist and then again in the 00s as songwriter / producer for Robbie Williams - with whom he toured the enormodromes of the world. But each time, he turned around and returned to the folk underground roots of his early inspirations with his band The Lilac Time. We take a gentle personal trip through the counterculture soundtracked by some of those inspirations. And we hear how the folk underground - and The Lilac Time - have quietly kept going whilst musical genres have come and gone. And we wonder if the counterculture is still alive and twitching, or if it was killed in the 80s .. by Gary Numan.. WOW. Shirley Collins has led a wild full life! The British Folk singer, who helped bring about the 60's folk revival in Great Britain, is on Basic Folk talking about her new album Heart's Ease and her entire extraordinary career. Shirley also talks about her childhood, which occurred during World War II and started her love and connection with traditional folk songs. Her grandparents would sing to her and her sister Dolly during air raids to try and keep the girls calm. This watershed moment would define her love of sharing these songs and how it feels for Shirley to sing. She talks about her late sister Dolly, a brilliant musical arranger and frequent collaborator, and how her compositions matched up perfectly with Shirley's singing. Shirley was a part of the historical Alan Lomax Southern Journey recordings, where she assisted the folklorist in collecting recordings of traditional folk songs in the American South. A lot of those songs were familiar to Shirley as they came over to America from England hundreds of years ago. She talks about the musicians she met along the way including Mississippi Fred McDowell. After she returned, she sang and recorded music from about 1955 - 1979 and then stopped when she went through a terribly traumatic event and developed dysphonia. Recently, Shirley has returned to making albums, starting in 2016 with Lodestar and now with her latest just released. She is generous with her answers and is good natured about my ridiculous questions. Also, a very fun lightning round! I can't wait to have Shirley on again.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
My guest in this episode is Will Lulofs. The observant amongst you will notice that there is a connection to my previous guest Tim Lulofs, as Will is his son. Dad would be the first to say that what is more significant than Will's parentage is that over the past 13 years he has released six critically acclaimed albums (with a seventh on the way) under the name of Will Stratton. Born in California in 1987, mostly raised in New Jersey and currently an upstate New Yorker, Will has a family background steeped in Americana and is the great-grandson of a travelling preacher. He started playing piano at the age of 4, guitar at 12 and did his first song writing and recording while at high school, before going on to study philosophy and music composition. In 2016 Will signed to one of the best independent labels there is, Bella Union, after its founder, Simon Raymonde, discovered his music on Bandcamp. The first release on Bella Union was “Rosewood Almanac” in 2017 which was described as: “a work of fragile magic, a hypnotic combination of beautifully breathy voice and exquisite lyrical imagery, gorgeous melodies and similarly soft-spun instrumentation, centred on his thrumming acoustic guitar and the verdant presence of velvet strings.”Will takes us through his story, talks about his influences and gives some fascinating insights into the creative process , the things that challenge and fulfil him, and some of the practical issues of being a recording artist. Will has a deep love and connection with the British "Folk movement" of the early 70's - Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson and Fairport Convention, but his taste and influences are wide ranging. They go from Debussy, Chopin and Erik Satie through ambient and electronic music to the film music of Max Richter and Jonny Greenwood . All of this and more is included in the Spotify Playlist below. It's one of the most eclectic we have had on the show and its all the better for that - enjoy :-)Please cut and paste into your browser https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7Lwm0Af64D34LreNXyGCTG?si=QszIsi4lSHCRZLXcGUmVIg
This new episode of Amazing Sounds Astounding Music analyses the rise and fall and survival of British folk rock, from it’s heydays in the early 70s to these days where the legacy of Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Steeleye Span and Albion Band still pushes many musicians to produce great music far away from the commercial limelight, an underground artistic ley line running beneath the mainstream. This week on the show, Z. Lupetin speaks with renowned British song collector, sonic interpreter, roots music promoter, and deeply intuitive folk singer Sam Lee. Lee came to music almost by accident after a former life as a wilderness survivalist and nature advocate. Since, he has become one of the leading voices in Great Britain, saving the treasured endemic music cultures that rapidly disappear each year. His gorgeously delicate and meticulously researched debut, Ground Of Its Own, shot him from hopeful academic to nationally recognized folk star -- partly by being nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize. Lee has relentlessly worked to save and rejuvenate the ancient melodies and songcraft of Irish and Scottish traveller tradition, Romany rhythms and stories, and connect those traditional melodies to a youthful pop culture that is yearning to know where it came from and where it is going next. His Nest Collective, an "acoustic folk club," gathers artists, authors, dancers and theatrical renegades and puts on shows and events across London - making Sam a rare double threat - as both an artist and a promoter of other artists. His newest release, Old Wow, drops January 31, 2020.

Mr Burns at London's Almeida Theatre is a play about an America without electrical power, the end of everything in contemporary USA - when the TV programme The Simpsons has passed into folklore. How do we reframe our understanding of fables? Folk art has often been neglected in the story of British art but a new exhibition at Tate Britain attempts to set that right with a range of items from pictures woven from human hair to ship's figureheads and quilts made by Crimean prisoners. British film Belle explores racial attitudes in 18th Century aristocratic circles through the story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy officer. Brought to England to live with his uncle The Lord Chief Justice, she became inadvertently involved in the campaign to abolish slavery. In the Light of What we Know is the debut novel by Zia Haider Rahman that deals with betrayal, revenge, love faith science and war through the relationship between two men across Kabul, New York, Oxford, London and Islamabad. And we look at how the British newspapers are dealing with the World Cup - not the matches and the scores but their depiction of the host country and the preparations, the atmosphere, the heat, the possible unrest... anything and everything bar the results. Tom Sutcliffe is joined by Elif Shafak, Charlotte Mendelson and Barb Jungr. The producer is Oliver Jones.
Album of the week: Ali and Toumani from Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate on World Circuit. Welcome to your next round the world music adventure. For those of you who like your African Music with a deep and heavy funk groove and a touch of fuzz guitar you'll jump with joy at Strut's re-release of Afro-Rock Volume One - out of print since 2002 and credited with started the "craze" for record digging and retro releases from the motherland. Hear a track on this week's broadcast along with a cut from Ofege's album Try and Love and some seriously heavy rocked out fuzz guitars from Zambia in the 70's courtesy of Amanaz, who's re-release on the Shadoks label is "a hallucinogenic £32" from Honest Jons. We play a track from Amanaz today - see what you reckon. Our album of the week, in complete contrast is some of the most beautiful music I've heard so far this year, Ali and Toumani with three cuts from the album you'll hear an on the spot improvisation from Toumani, Ali with some deep Peul grooves and the extraordinary love and empathy these two musicians have for each other's music. A contender for album of the year. Starting with some Brit folk and tracks from the Imagined Village with a little known Ewan McColl composition and the marvellous Chumbawamba mocking the BNP's attempts to infiltrate the British Folk scene. Slotting a track from the new Bollywood Funk album into the mix aswell, we have another eclectic round the world music adventure. An ode to Late Junction (BBC Radio 3) one of the best programmes available online...As you settle down for the evening stick this episode on...let it take you into sleep. I am delving into British Folk, of the modern kind...there is a little bit of that here, but there will be more to come.
