Elevator pitches are critically important when selling your book. Ideally, you'd answer the question, “So, what's your book about?” with a one sentence description that gets the agent/publisher/reader interested in knowing more. Today's guest, Karen McManus, used “It's like the breakfast club, but with murder,” as her elevator pitch for One of Us is Lying and that's when I knew I had to have her on the show.  Meet Karen McManus Karen M. McManus is a #1 New York Times and international bestselling author of young adult thrillers. Her books include the One of Us Is Lying series, which has been turned into a television show on Peacock, as well as the standalone novels Two Can Keep a Secret, The Cousins, You'll Be the Death of Me, and Nothing More to Tell. Karen's critically acclaimed, award-winning work has been translated into more than forty-two languages. "Well, I had a wonderful teacher in second grade who kind of inspired me to start writing and really stuck with me through elementary school and beyond as I made attempts to find my voice, but think part of the reason it never really went anywhere for me as a young person was because I was too afraid to share that with anyone except for that one teacher. I never showed friends. I didn't even really show family. I just always felt that it wasn't quite good enough. And so the thing I always tell writers now if they ask for, you know, "What's one tip?" It's let someone else tell you no, because I just told myself no for pretty much my entire young adulthood. And once I let other people tell me no, they did a lot, you know, but that is how I got better."Karen M. McManus is a #1 New York Times and international bestselling author of young adult thrillers. "I always think in ensembles. I like to think about the team as almost its own character. It has its own arc and people need to have points of connection with each other. They need to have points of conflict with each other, and somehow all of that needs to tie together at the end. So it's starting broad and then eventually narrowing down to the nitty-gritty of what actually happens in a story and how it affects the people involved. They are young adults. They're written for young adults, but I think they're for everyone. And I certainly hear from a readership that's very diverse, and I think the common theme that people tend to come back to is that they do see themselves at least a little bit in some of the characters. Maybe not who they are today, but who they were at one point, and the characters are always going on a journey that parallels the mystery. So it's not just about solving the crime. It's about figuring out who you are. And also figuring out your relationships with the other people who are caught up in this crime with you."Karen M. "It's a really exciting thing to make it all the way through and to have so many talented people work on your book, but TV is a different medium. And there's changes that are made that you're not necessarily a part of, but it does create another universe for your storytelling. And with season two, it was always going be difficult to use One of Us is Next because there's a time jump, and there's different characters. And then I think some of the changes that were made in season one really made it impossible. So now they're two separate paths. And I think that's fun for readers to not know what's going to happen, but I think they'll also know that I'm working on a third book for the One of Us series. And to me, that's how it all ends. I do use a beat sheet, which is a screenwriting tool, and I find it very helpful. When I start getting to that point where I think I understand the characters, and I'm trying to get into the nitty-gritty of the plot, I will start planning out those moments like what's the inciting incident? What's the midpoint? What's the next reveal? What's the climax? And then the interesting part for me is figuring out the character beats in between those. So what's happening internally with this character, and what's happening in the relationships between all of the main characters that are somehow related to either this reveal or this red herring or something that's moving the mystery along, but also is moving character development along as well."Karen M. So what's happening internally with this character, and what's happening in the relationships between all of the main characters that are somehow related to either this reveal or this red herring or something that's moving the mystery along, but also is moving character development along as well."https://www.karenmcmanus.com@writerkmcon Twitter - Instagramwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.org

Marissa chats with Karen M. McManus about her new YA mystery - NOTHING MORE TO TELL - as well as developing characters that are complex and relatable by first interviewing them and creating in-depth profiles; outlining your mystery in order to "stress test" the idea, while leaving room for intuition and exploration; how to maintain a close point of view with unreliable narrators while still keeping secrets from your readers; balancing a multitude of messy, complicated subplots, and how secondary storylines can double as misdirection from a central mystery; following your instincts in order to overcome the challenges of "second book syndrome"; and what it's like to have a book developed for a Netflix TV show!Books discussed in this episode can be purchased from your local independent bookstore or buy them online from the Happy Writer bookshop.org store (that benefits indie bookstores) at  https://bookshop.org/shop/marissameyer

Be sure to keep your friends close . . . and your secrets closer. Four years ago, Brynn left Saint Ambrose School following the shocking murder of her favorite teacher—a story that made headlines after the teacher's body was found by three Saint Ambrose students in the woods behind their school. The case was never solved. Now that Brynn is moving home and starting her dream internship at a true-crime show, she's determined to find out what really happened.  The kids who found Mr. Larkin are her way in, and her ex–best friend, Tripp Talbot, was one of them. Without his account of events, the other two kids might have gone down for Mr. Larkin's murder—but instead, thanks to Tripp, they're now at the top of the Saint Ambrose social pyramid. Tripp's friends have never forgotten what Tripp did for them that day, and neither has he. Just like he hasn't forgotten that everything he told the police was a lie. Digging into the past is bound to shake up the present, and when Brynn begins to investigate what happened in the woods that day, she uncovers secrets that might change everything—about Saint Ambrose, about Mr. Larkin, and about her ex-best friend, Tripp Talbot. Four years ago someone got away with murder. More terrifying is that they might be closer than anyone thinks.

For the last book club of 2020, we chose The Cousins by Karen McManus. This is a twisty YA thriller, sans murder - making it kind of the perfect book for both of us! This is the tale of Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah Story: three cousins who barely know each other but are invited to work at their estranged grandmother’s resort. All of their parents have been disinherited and the cousins learn more and more about the dark secrets of their family’s past. We chat about which cousins we relate to most, our theories about the ending, and our interest in the psyche of the adult characters. We both really enjoyed this book and we hope you did too!   Join us in the Facebook group and let us know what you thought!   More Non-Scary YA Thrillers: One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus One of Us is Next by Karen McManus Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes Deadly Little Scandals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes They Wish They Were Us by Jessica Goodman All These Beautiful Strangers by Elizabeth Klehfoth   Obsessions: Algenist Liquid Collagen Kosas sport lip balm Mario Badescu Lip Balm  Chameleon Cold Brew Coffee Ample Hills Peppermint Pattie Ice Cream Other Products Mentioned: Blundstone Boots What We’re Reading: Joyful by Ingrid Fetell Lee A Promised Land by Barack Obama Star Crossed Sisters of Tuscany by Lori Nelson Spielman Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia White Ivy by Susie Yang Pretty Things by Janelle Brown Swear on this Life by Renee Carlino The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. For our November Book Club we read Destination Wedding by Diksha Basu. This book is exactly what we needed as we are both missing travel, meeting new people, and big events like weddings! The story follows Tina Das, a Brooklynite who is traveling to India with her divorced parents and her best friend to attend a cousin’s lavish wedding. Both Tina and her father are looking for love while on their trip, with some pretty mixed results. This book was such a fun read that will have you laughing, and, if you’re like us, wanting to be best friends with the main character.   Also tune in Friday for a bonus episode with the author! Preferably fiction and/or fun/uplifting Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet; Tales from the Inner City by Shaun Tan; Take the Mic edited by Bethany C. Morrow; Snow in Love; Hope Nation edited by Rose Brock; The Radical Element edited by Jessica Spotswood. A gift for my brother who isn’t a big reader. He’s in college, loves soccer and video games, and hasn’t enjoyed a book since reading Holes in middle school. Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith; Slay by Brittany Morris; The Pros of Cons by Alison Cherry; Booked by Kwame Alexander; Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez; Warcross by Marie Lu; Feed by MT Anderson. New, contemporary, socially conscious, diverse. Yes No Maybe So by Aisha Saeed and Becky Albertalli; The Voting Booth by Brandy Colbert; Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusuf Salaam; Running by Natalia Sylvester; We Didn’t Ask For This by Adi Alsaid; Dear Justyce by Nic Stone. Diverse body positive books. What I Like About Me by Jenna Guillaume; Melt My Heart by Bethany Rutter; My Eyes Are Up Here by Laura Zimmermann; Gabi, a Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero; If It Makes You Happy by Claire Kann; Body Talk: 37 Voices Explore Our Radical Anatomy edited by Kelly Jensen. YA dealing with survivors of sexual abuse/pedophilia/other childhood trauma: some of my favorites that I’ve read are Sadie, Girl in Pieces, Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls, Perks of Being a Wallflower and Speak. Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson; Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough; The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith; Charm & Strange by Stephanie Kuehn; How Dare the Sun Rise by Sandra Uwiringyimana; Wrecked by Maria Padian; Infandous by Elana K. Arnold; In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. A YA book to get my friend who doesn’t really read….p.s. she really likes Disney. Disney’s Twisted Tales; Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige; Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo; Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee. One of my high school students likes mysteries and fantasy novels, but doesn’t like any “kissing” (i.e. lots of romance or a focus on a relationship). What suggestions could I give her? Goldie Vance: The Hotel Whodunit by Lilliam Rivera; Endangered by Lamar Giles; Jennifer Lynn Barnes; Karen M. McManus; Complicit by Stephanie Kuehn. A book for my 16 year old nephew who is a very particular reader. Used to love Rick Riordan but has moved on. Beyond Riordan, the only books I’ve sent him that he has actually called begging for the sequels is Scythe. He likes Agatha Christie “because it makes him think” (to figure out what is going on). I’ve tried AS King and Going Bovine, but have not gotten a reaction and all the fantasy tried and trues. Would love an idea from you! Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore; The Future will be BS-free by Will McIntosh; The Lines We Cross by Randa Abdel-Fattah; Warcross and Legend by Marie Lu. A contemporary with some magic and some romance, but the story does not center grief. Now and When by Sara Bennett Wealer; Displacement by Kiku Hughes; Lobizona by Romina Garber. I am looking for a fantasy novel with romance that ideally is part of an almost finished or finished series. I have already read many of the popular ones, so I guess I am looking for those that were a bit more under the radar. I have read/started the Folk of the Air Series, A Court of Thorns and Roses Series, Red Queen Series, all of Cassandra Clare, etc. and loved them all! Looking for something in that realm. Blythewood by Carol Goodman; Lost Voices by Sarah Porter; The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd; Brooklyn Brujas by Zoraida Cordova. Warm fuzzy story about family (chosen, biological, adopted, whatever) with winter holiday(s) (not necessarily Christmas, but Christmas ok) as a backdrop and a happy ending. Something wintery and hopeful. (At least something that leaves the reader with some hope.) I like a variety of things. Some writers whose work I’ve enjoyed: Katie Henry, Karen McManus, Tomi Adeyemi, Jenny Han, Nina LaCour, and too many names to list. A few books I’ve read and enjoyed because of this podcast: Agnes at the End of the World, We Are the Perfect Girl, and Orpheus Girl. 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston; The Kid Table by Andrea Seigel; The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody. A feminist book like Rules for Being a Girl. Girls Like Us by Randi Pink; The Degenerates by J. Albert Mann; Burn Baby Burn by Meg Medina; Watch Us Rise by Renee Watson and Ellen Hagan. Books for a 13 year-old. She loves the Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare and anything written by Rick Riordan. Recently, I loaned her my copy of With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo (one of my favorite YA authors ever) and she loved it. I’d really like to give her books in a genre she loves and one that will expand her reading material. Finding Yvonne by Brandy Colbert; New Kid/Class Act by Jerry Craft; Inventing Victoria by Tonya Bolden; Akata Witch/Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor. Something that will make me laugh, but also teach me something. The Go-Between by Veronica Chambers; Cherry by Lindsey Rosin; Unpregnant by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan; We Are The Perfect Girl by Ariel Kaplan. I’m looking for at book for my niece (18 years old). She is not an avid reader out side required reading in school. She’s not that into fantasy and Sci fi, she likes contemporary fiction better. She might like a short story collection because 40 pages is not as daunting as 350 pages (or more if it’s a series) for a story. Books she had liked recently: They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera and Broken Things by Lauren Oliver. Try Margarita Engle, Nikki Grimes, Stephanie Hemphill, Kwame Alexander as an alternative to short stories but still with a lot of white space, as it may be less intimidating; Toil and Trouble edited by Jessica Spotswood and Tess Sharpe; Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. I’m interested in spooky tales, thrillers, science fiction, and non-WWII fiction. No dystopias or urban fantasy, please! The most important thing to me as an aromantic asexual person is that’s there’s no significant romantic element. I don’t want the main character to have any romantic partners or to spend several pages daydreaming about their crush(es). Thanks! Pan’s Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke; Dread Nation by Justina Ireland; Dreamland Burning by Jennifer Latham; The Blood Confession by Alisa M. Libby; The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupecho; Jackaby by William Ritter; Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour. A book for my 19 year old sister who loves Wilder Girls and The Poet X. She is a fan of feminism, horror, and queerness in books. The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters; Mary’s Monster by Lita Judge; The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis; Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez; We Are The Wildcats by Siobhan Vivian; The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus. A book for my daughter. She recently told me that she is gay. I want to show her how much I love her and accept her. She loves graphic novels and has read many of the most popular ones featuring same sex relationships. Everything Noelle Stevenson! Lumberjanes, Nimona, The Fire Never Goes Out; Queer: A Graphic History by Meg John Barker and Julia Scheele; Skim by Mariko Tamaki; Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu; Kiss Number 8 by Colleen AF Venable and Ellen T. Crenshaw; Moonstruck by Grace Ellis and Shae Bragl. Something heavily folklore-based (Maggie Stiefvater or higher level of “heavily”) and LGBTQ+ please? European and Asian folklore are my favorite but I’ll be happy to dive into any other as well. Anna-Marie McLemore; A Thousand Beginnings and Endings edited by Elsie Chapman and Ellen Oh; Wicked As You Wish by Rin Chupeco; A Curse of Roses by Diana Pinguicha; Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao; Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardost. A fantasy or science fiction novel, preferably action-packed. Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger; The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline; Cut Off by Adrianne Finley; Orleans by Sherri L. Smith. An awesome ghost story. The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco; Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn; Horrid by Katrina Leno; The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring; Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour; Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All by Laura Ruby; Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. School for Good & Evil read-alikes for 14-year-old reluctant reader. Thanks! Carry On by Rainbow Rowell; The Irregular at Magic High School manga series by Tsutomu Sato; The Black Mage by Daniel Howard Barnes; Supermutant Magic Academy by Jillian Tamaki; A Blade so Black by LL McKinney; Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim; Liz Braswell’s Twisted Fairy Tales series; Melissa Albert’s The Hazel Wood. Kaytee and Mindy are chatting this week while Meredith hosts a leadership retreat in Waco, TX. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: stealing a book out of the hands of a reader, and helping another rediscover her love of “fun” reading. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got YA and WWII and memoir and coming-of-age novels to chat about and we cannot wait to share those opinions with you! For our deep dive this week, we are chatting about the kids’ book club that Mindy started for her 11 year old son. We’re talking about logistics and book picks and what the kiddos talk about, and it’s a great discussion that’s sure to inspire a reader in your life. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: one from a new “author crush” and one that has been referenced so many times on the podcast that it has finally earned its place on the Press list. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you’d like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don’t scroll down!  *Please note that all book titles linked above are Amazon affiliate links. Welcome to the third edition of Creative FM, the brand new, independent, and free Creative Makers podcast. In this podcast I speak to designers, makers, and interesting brain-workers from across the world to hear their stories and discuss creativity. This time, I met Karen McManus who is the Senior Director of Revenue Marketing at a company that provides design assets and technology that help create brands. Although being a single parent, she somehow manages to writes Young Adult contemporary and fantasy fiction books in her spare time. As if this wasn’t enough, her recent book ‘One Of Us Is Lying’ became an instant New York Times and international bestseller. The book has been on the list for over 30 weeks already and available in 35 territories worldwide. Last but not least, the book is currently being developed as a TV series. I have read it myself and—although many would say I am not a Young Adult anymore—I liked it a lot. Hence I had to find out about the secret of writing a bestseller in your free time.
