Tonka needed something to get them out of a $10,000,000 hole. The needed to transform their situation. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Simple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So, here's one of those. [Pinpoint Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast, Dave Young here, along with Stephen Semple, and we're talking about empires. And the one you gave me now is I have to admit, I am familiar with the brand, but I'm not an active participant in the brand. I think I've mentioned on here before, I raised four daughters, and so today's topic is Transformers. And none of my daughters were ever into Transformers as a toy. I was beyond toys when Transformers, I think first came around. So I've never even really jumped into the movies. But big, big brand. Stephen Semple: Huge brand. Dave Young: Tell me how they got started. Stephen Semple: Well, and the interesting thing, I almost included my oldest daughter, Crystal, in the recording of this, and I decided that, no, we might do a follow-up episode with her because she is a massive Transformers fan. Dave Young: Wow. Okay. Stephen Semple: And the interesting thing is she never played with them as a kid, but she found herself into the fandom. And today there's a whole thing I want to do about fandoms because it really speaks to the role that social media plays with a lot of companies. Dave Young: I feel like as a kid, I would've loved them. Stephen Semple: Because there's this unbelievably rich storyline behind Transformers that is incredible. And then it's actually one that is fragmented into the Michael Bay Transformers storyline versus the historic ones, because Michael Bay is the one who made the movies. It's this crazy world when you dig into it. But, the story of Transformers is actually a story of a battle between two decent-sized companies. So it's not normally what we do, but it was so interesting, I thought we got to talk about this because it's a story about a battle between Tonka and Hasbro. Dave Young: Oh, man. Just like Wonka and the other guy. Yeah. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Exactly. Yeah, yeah. Today the Transformers franchise, I think is a $25 billion franchise between the movies and the toys. It is massive. And the story goes back to we're in July of 1983, and Tonka is struggling for a new hit. Tonka is being run by Steve Shank, and they're like $10 million in the hole, and they're known for trucks. And think back to the '80s, what's happening, video games are growing and the market is shifting away from things like playing with trucks. And Tonka did not shift with it. So they're really, really struggling. And Shank has hired a Mattel veteran, Pat Fellie. He's the guy who basically helped turn things around at Mattel with He-Man. So he was basically the really a key person with developing of He-Man. And so they need something quick. And the shortcut is to license existing toys because the development and manufacturing is done. It's quicker and cheaper to market. So they go out everywhere looking around for something to market, and they come across this toy that Knickerbocker has. Knickerbocker is going out of business, and it's this interesting toy, which is a car and a robot, but it's a cheap knockoff. The real one is being done in Japan by Bandai, which is making this thing called a Machine Robo. And so Steve Shank heads to Tokyo to get the rights. And Bandai demands, okay, well, we can make this for you, but you got to buy 800,000 units as part of the deal, and Tonka has never sold that much,

"The Bromance Book Club" is a fun, funny, and sexy novel about a group of men who help their friend save his marriage with the help of tropes from the saucy romances they read together. It has absolutely no connection whatsoever with either the 1984 animated film The Transformers: The Movie or the more recent live action Michael Bay Transformers movies, so while some light discussion of those lovable robots in disguise is inevitable, please don't expect TOO much Transformers talk in this episode. Original broadcast date January 24, 2019. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/01/binary-system-podcast-161-bumblebee-and-other-transformers-topics/ It sure doesn't happen very often: both the East and West Coast branches of Binary System actually saw a movie before it left the theaters. But it was a Transformers movie, and the reviews were great, so how could they NOT go see it? Spoilers ahoy! Listen in as they break down everything they loved (and a couple teeny tiny things they didn't) about Bumblebee. After that they segued into...more Transformers stuff, including the Transformers The Movie mini-documentary that Kathryn recommends, IDW's Transformers: Historia, and, you know, all the other IDW Transformers books that they loved. This week's outro music is a clip from the Bumblebee score by Dario Marianelli which, seriously, if it's one thing we loved about the Michael Bay movies it was the score by Steve Jablonsky, but Marianelli did a hell of a job with the music in Bumblebee. https://www.amazon.com/Bumblebee-Motion-Picture-Score-Marianelli/dp/B07L46D6VY The mini-documentary Kathryn mentioned is called Really That Good - Transformers: The Movie (1986), and it takes a very in-depth look at how something that was basically a series of toy commercials leading to a ninety-minute toy commercial ended up being so meaningful to an entire generation of children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9iab0z6Kyg The Youtuber who talks about The Male Gaze and how it applies to the Michael Bay Transformers movie franchise is Lindsay Ellis https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG1h-Wqjtwz7uUANw6gazRw, and her whole Transformers Film Studies series is really, really good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRXI__Wixas&list=PLJGOq3JclTH8J73o2Z4VMaSYZDNG3xeZ7 Correction: We referred to the main character in Michael Bay's first Transformers movie as Spike. His name was actually Sam. We got it wrong because we don't actually care.

The first 25 minutes of Pieces of a Woman should be enough to tell you that you’re not prepared for the emotional toll of this movie. It should absolutely come with a trigger warning but at the same time is a must watch. At first this film seems like it’s about loss and grieving after Martha (Vanessa Kirby) and Sean (Shia LaBeouf) lose their child after a difficult home birth. However, what director Kornél Mundruczó and writer Kata Wéber really do is tell the story of how society dictates to women how they should feel and behave. This film really exposes how selfish people can be even when it appears (even to themselves) that they're being selfless. Losing a child is a tragic, heartbreaking experience for parents. But only one of those parents carried the baby inside their own body and that's the reality we have to life with. A woman who loses a child should be able to grieve (or not) how they want and shouldn't have to shoulder the emotional baggage of everyone else's grief and expectations. Pieces of a Woman works because of the two leads in the film, Shia LaBeouf and Vanessa Kirby. As I said in my capsule review, I want someone to give Shia LeBeouf a hug. I'm worried about him. Although maybe I shouldn't because he's come such a long way. From screaming "OPTIMUS!!!!" every 2 seconds in those terrible Michael Bay Transformers films to that weird stretch as a battle rapper, he’s had some rough patches. But with Honey Boy, The Peanut Butter Falcon and now Pieces of a Woman, he’s put together not only the 3 best performances of his career, but three roles that at least put him in the conversation during Oscar season. We can make all the jokes we want but LeBeouf has more than proven that he's a damn good actor. To be honest, part of my concern for his well being comes from the fact that he plays these roles so damn well, I start to question if he's even acting. When it's hard to discern where the fictional character begins and where the real person is, particularly when its different roles with their own unique traits and quirks, then it's safe to say, that's some damn fine acting. But the real star of Pieces of a Woman is Vanessa Kirby. LeBeouf puts in a great performance but this is Kirby's movie. Whatever your feelings about Pieces of a Woman are, the one thing that should be agreed upon is that Vanessa Kirby is absolutely fantastic in this film. If you weren’t a fan of Kirby before, you should leave this film as one. I’ve seen some reviews that suggest that Kirby didn’t really connect because at times she felt too stoic and emotionally detached. The irony of that is how meta that critique is. Martha spends most of the film having to defend herself from her mother and husband who think she’s not showing enough emotion after what happened and therefore must need their help or that something is wrong with her. To complain that Kirby isn’t showing enough (or the correct emotional reaction) as Martha really does miss the whole point the film is trying to make. Pieces of a Woman was one of my favorites of TIFF 2020, coming in second to One Night In Miami. It's a film that will definitely generate more conversations as more people see it. Netflix picked this up to distribute which makes sense. This film fits well in the conversation like Marriage Story did and is definitely worth checking out. Hey guys! As you know, Jake decided that we were going to do what he kept calling Trucktember, where we'd watch all the Michael Bay Transformers movies. Well he regretted that decision basically immediately after watching just one of the franchise. Let this be a lesson to you. Always recognize when it's time to quit. So we discuss how no one is likable in this movie, every single person except for John Voigt is orange, sweaty, and dumb, Sam Witwicky is the fastest and most indestructible man alive, the Autobots SUCK at being stealthy for robots in disguise, phyisics can suck it, every robot's name is terrible, and Megan Fox is the only good person in this movie. https://popculturefailure.podbean.com/ popculturefailure@gmail.com Show: @FailedPopCultur Jake: @mdwstlvaffr Sky: @sandwichsurplus BLM Defund the Police

We're at the end of the Michael Bay Transformers series. The Last Knight being the fifth installment in the series means our patience is running...very thin. But in lieu of a full on mental breakdown we power on through following the adventures of Cade Yeager, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Merlin or whatever. Thank god it''s over is all I'm saying. And thank you America for Cade Yeager.Help support the show and get early episodes at https://bigsandwich.co/SUBSCRIBE HERE ►► http://goo.gl/pQ39jNVideo Edition ► https://youtu.be/yxcDWiOwXrcJames' Twitter ► http://twitter.com/mrsundaymoviesMaso's Twitter ► http://twitter.com/wikipediabrownTWP Itunes ► https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-weekly-planet/id718158767?mt=2&ign-mpt=uo%3D4TWP Direct Download ► https://play.acast.com/s/theweeklyplanetTWP YouTube Channel ► https://goo.gl/1ZQFGHPatreon ► https://patreon.com/mrsundaymoviesAmazon Affiliate Link ► https://amzn.to/2nc12P4T-Shirts/Merch ► https://www.teepublic.com/stores/mr-sunday-movies#Transformers See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We discuss the newest addition to the Transformers franchise, Transformers: War for Cybertron and reflect on those "wonderful" Michael Bay Transformers films.
We return yet again to the Michael Bay Transformers universe with the third entry, Dark Of The Moon. Shia LaBeouf is back along with not Megan Fox who was fired and replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. This time Leonard Nimoy steps up as the villainous Sentinel Prime, a new alley to Megatron and the Decepticons up against Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and all the other differently accented Autobots. There's also a horrible CGI President, a Space Bridge or something, Cybertron, wing suits and point blank executions. Is this the pinnacle of the franchise? The Geek Buddies with John Rocha, Michael Vogel and Shannon McClung
The Geek Buddies are back this week with another brand new episode! John Rocha and Michael Vogel handle the load this week as Shannon McClung is on set shooting a new episode of a TV show. The dynamic duo hold down the fort though as they give their thoughts on Andy Serkis in Venom 2, some DC casting rumors, and Lucasfilm joining the production team for Children of Blood and Sand. Also, Rocha and Vogel get in the ring to debate the Michael Bay Transformers films vs Bumblebee and what is next for the franchise and they battle over the latest updates about the Snyder Cut being $30-40 million away from completion and a possible release according to Kevin Smith. They also give their thoughts on some of the latest DC and Marvel casting rumors floating around for The Batman and the next Spider-Man film. [School of Movies 2019] After eleven years of terrible Michael Bay Transformers movies, which America and then the rest of the world slowly checked out of, leaving the fifth (which actually isn't too bad) to perform below expectations Paramount and Hasbro reshuffled for an inexpensive prequel spin-off movie, which, due to its change in creative team and divorce from those earlier movies is way better. But it's not just because it lacks the gross fratboy sensibilities of its predecessors, there's actually a really superb film in here which hearkens back to Amblin pictures in the 80s. We brought on a bunch of brains to get to the bottom of this, discovering some deep love for Transformers along the way. Welcome to Episode 134 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things geek and nerd related, provided our DVR's have space and our Netflix accounts are our own and none others. This week the Geeks (Mitch, Jake and Matt Orrin) are joined by Apples, a Comedian from northern Colorado, at the Sexpot Comedy Studios located above the awesome Mutiny Information Cafe, for another packed episode of geeky goodness. Venom is in theatres and some of us went to see it with funny man Apples. Can they make an entertaining, functional Spider-man based "villian" film without the webslinging hero? It appears that they did! We all pretty much liked it, though it had some trouble spots. It seemed no one dug the Eminem song at the end, but you decide for yourself. However, it is top of the box office for two weeks in a row, so it might have staying power...like a turd in the wind. We couldn't just talk about Venom, as there is a WHOLE world of content out there! Some of it is spooky, like clowns. We talked about that clown from Poltergeist and Apples taking Mitch ghost hunting. Listen to hear what they found on their hunt. We also created a new show, Poltergeists & Pies which has the participant baking for a spirit, trying to figure out what baked good they might want. Onto the DC Universe, we talked about the new Aquaman trailer and Jake noticed Sea Bikers, riding on giant sea horses. Fins of Anarchy! Also, James Gunn seems to be coming over to DC to work on Suicide Squad. This could be very exciting if it really happens. Titans is now officially out on DC Universe streaming service, so make sure to check THAT out! Apples is apparently a big Transformers fan, from back in the day, so we needed to talk about that Bumblebee trailer. Its weird having a movie about a peripheral character, but we will say that the old-school look of robots was great! Bumblebeem, Soundwave and Optimus Prime look like they should, and that makes this very exciting. The original Michael Bay Transformers movies have merit but this new movie seems to lack the Bay-os of those films. If you havent already checked out Denver Open Media, and what they have offered then go to https://www.denveropenmedia.org As you might already know, we'll be on Tuesday nights at 10pm. Back in 1984, kids had lost interest in most of the toy lines of the day. Then, Hasbro released the Transformers line, and kids now had toys that could be cars, trucks, jets, and guns, as well as kick-ass robots! Now the Geek Salad team of Joe, Andy, and Mike discuss the toy line, as well as the multiple cartoon and comic book series and the 1986 animated movie. Then, they’ll put their film school nerd caps on to discuss everything wrong with the dumpster fire that is the Michael Bay Transformers series. It’s at this point that Andy will go off on proper character motivation and action sequencing while Joe and Mike bang their heads against the coffee table trying to figure out how, in God’s name, you can screw up the Dinobots!!!! Dare! Dare to believe you can survive [another Michael Bay Transformers movie]. You hold the future in your hand. Dare. Dare to keep all of your dreams alive [of never having to sit through another one]. It's time to take a stand. And you can win, if you dare [to stay home when the Bumblebee solo film comes out]. Yes, listeners, it's fair to say that the reaction from Steve Norman, Owen Hughes and Callum Petch to Transformers 5 / Transformers: The Last Knight / Trans5mers was less than positive. Perhaps it was the lack of Vince DiCola and Stan Bush that sours those films so..? Not even listening to the all-time greatest movie soundtrack ever no backsies can change our opinion. I say it's the greatest movie soundtrack ever, but Edgar Wright's Baby Driver, which is also reviewed on this episode, may have something to say on that matter! In What We've Been Watching, we also cover another new release, The Book of Henry, as well as The Skeleton Twins, 80's exploitation Contamination, and last year's War Dogs....
