Our first historical romance for the pod! Bringing Down the Duke introduces the issues surrounding women's rights in the late 1800s England and makes for a great conversation. Join us as we meet Annabelle, a ‘commoner' who just wants to live the way every woman should be able to live - free from the confines of the rules of men. After being one of the first women accepted to attend the University of Oxford, Annabelle unknowingly approaches Sebastian Devereux, the Duke of Montgomery, asking for his support for the women's suffrage movement. Though both are instantly attracted to one another, they both have lots of past-relationship-baggage and opposing agendas that must be kept. So what happens? Well, just listen. ***We would love and appreciate it if you could Subscribe then Rate & Review us on iTunes! Ep. 6: Historical Settings (The Satapur Moonstone + Portrait of a Scotsman)

Hearts & Daggers

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2022 54:35

Summary: Today, Holly and Devin dig into one of their favorite themes, books set in the past! They are in agreement that historical settings work well for both mysteries and romances, especially when the author does their research and works hard to make the setting vivid and accurate. Both books touched on feminist characters and themes, and have connections to the British colonial empire. Beyond that, though, the books diverge in plot but remain united as fantastic examples of historical settings done well. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (2:24): Holly discussed The Satapur Moonstone by Sujata Massey. The year is 1922 and the princely state of Satapur, India has suffered multiple tragedies that culminate in the new king being a 10 year-old boy. The dowager queen and her daughter-in-law seek the aid of Perveen Mistry, the only female lawyer in Bombay. Her key takeaways from this book were: Feminism and female empowerment are a major theme, with explorations ranging from a purdah (custom in some Muslim and Hindu societies where women sequester themselves to stay out of sight of men) to a woman going to Oxford to become a lawyer and coming back to pioneer the career in Bombay.  The vivid description of the environment and the jungle/rural area of Satapur transported Holly in an enjoyable way; Massey described the treacherous journeys back and forth from where Perveen was staying and the palace itself. If you enjoy literary mysteries and historical fiction, this series is a must-read. Massey's books combine the techniques of Agatha Christie and Louise Penny, while following a badass lawyer.  The Heart (18:46): Devin discussed Portrait for a Scotsman by Evie Dunmore. In this third book of the League of Extraordinary Women series, Dunmore explores 1880s England and Scotland with two enemies who end up in a forced marriage - Hattie Greenfield and Lucian Blackstone. Her key takeaways were: Dunmore touches on similar themes to her past novels in the series, driving home key messages on the patriarchy and the restrictive society in late 19th century England. In this novel, though, she adds an extra socialist layer by examining themes like worker's rights and socioeconomic inequality. If you ship Dramione (Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger), this is the book for you. The romance and intimacy is explicitly and steamy, and the redemption arc for Lucian as the initial villain is juicy.  At times, Hattie comes across as just a bit too privileged and pampered to be sympathetic, whereas Lucian is the true hero of the book and the exploration into his motivations and traumas is the actual cornerstone of the book.  Hot On the Shelf (41:04): Holly: A Court of Mist and Fury Sarah J Maas Devin: Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks What's Making Our Hearts Race (47:46): Holly: Love is Blind Japan on Netflix Devin: Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Well, in this episode, things go off the rails just ever so slightly, but can you blame us? I mean, we are talking about the delightful Evie Dunmore, our new Scottish lass girl-crush. And when you are speaking about historical romance, one of our all-time favorites, you can't help but go down the rabbit hole of Hallmark Christmas movies (trust us, it's possible), and things that make you feel like you've just been offered a warm chocolate chip cookie and a massage. Yes. Please. But in this first book of 3 (and a 4th being written), we SO appreciate the time and effort this Oxford graduate took to offer up a really interesting perspective (and history!) of the women's suffragette movement in the UK and how we really had a shit time of if over there. And of course, a really good love story. But on the flip side, Evie, we needed more sex. Like a lot more, cuz the one or two that you wrote were really good, and you seriously left us hanging. But don't miss this episode where we spill all the beans about Bringing Down the Duke, rate the sex scale (again, give us more), and where we chat about everything from how do you balance too much sex and too little, do authors really want to be authors full time (where is the "real" world for them?), and cultural traditions that may seem a little foreign to us. And the sex. Did we mention that? Tune in! And check out the lovely Evie below, along with what we are currently reading this week! Special guest and author Evie Dunmore has graciously allowed us to fangirl over her and her new release Portrait of a Scotsman!Hattie Greenfield went to an invite-only art gallery without her bodyguard and without a chaperone.  The gallery's owner, Lucien Blackstone, did not know he was trying to be more charitable.  When his art restorer told him a wet woman was there for the tour, he thought it was a tour of his body.Hattie finds out the man she kissed and slapped was  Mr. Blackstone himself.  Since then, she tried to avoid her father's rival.  However, she gets another invite to his gallery as the potential patroness of his non-existent (at the moment) charity. As they say, opposites attract and if you do not want to be betrothed to a dark hero make sure the room does not have double-sided windows.  There are two sides to a person and a marriage of inconvenience will definitely bring out both sides to run from or grow with.  Join us as we discuss photographer Hattie and philanthropist Lucien!DRAWING ROOM DISCUSSIONS –Actual biologist Mien of @biologistreadsromanceMien's baby The Nerdy Bluestockings on Blogspotwww.nerdybluestockings.blogspot.com/?zx=230f17c257e64e10“OFFICIAL, UNOFFICIAL BOOK REVIEW”– 1:45“POT-TAIL PONDERING” with Evie Dunmore – 40:40Evie DunmorePortrait of a ScotsmanLeague of Extraordinary Womenwww.eviedunmore.comwww.facebook.com/EvieDunmoreAuthorwww.instagram.com/evietheauthorwww.twitter.com/evie_dunmoreWho'd You Rather with Evie Dunmore heroes and some favorites!Next – Along Came a Lady by Christi CaldwellHosts - Toni Rose & Wendy WooEmail - litwallflowerspodcast@gmail.comFollow on www.instagram.com/litwallflowerspodcastShop at https://www.zazzle.com/store/lit_wallflowers/productsWebsite https://linktr.ee/litwallflowersLit Wallflowers is part of the Frolic Podcast Network.  You can find more outstanding podcasts to subscribe to at Frolic.media/podcasts!

We finally find out how Tristan knows about Lucie's cat in “A Rogue of One's Own” by Evie Dunmore!Lord Tristan Ballentine was enchanted when he saw Lady Lucinda riding her horse towards him and his hiding place one summer.  He just arrived at her home and did not expect to be slapped on the face for a misunderstanding with his undone breeches.  Then for the next several summers, he would torment her.Fifteen years later, Lady Lucie was on the verge of getting majority shares of a publishing company.  What she did not expect was to be equal partners with her nemesis, Tristan, who has his own familial and financial reasons for wanting control of the company.  The only way Tristan would give majority shares to Lucie was to spend one night with him. Finally taking a suffragist's advice to take a lover to destress, Lucie and Tristan spent more than one night together which only deepened their hidden feelings for each other.  Then things got messy when Lucie caught Tristan out with her cousin and supposed fiancée.There is nothing we would not do for those we love.  Sometimes we sacrifice for them, sometimes we fight for them, or sometimes we let our guard down.  When we have been pining for someone for a long time, we fight for them.  If we learn we misunderstood them or the situation, we fight for them.  Join us as we discuss shield maiden Lady Lucinda and catnip (to humans and pets) Lord Tristan Ballentine!DRAWING ROOM DISCUSSIONS –Actual biologist Mien of @biologistreadsromanceUnicorn books on Mien's Ebay storewww.ebay.com/usr/biologistreadsromance“OFFICIAL, UNOFFICIAL BOOK REVIEW”– 00:45Featuring – Evie Dunmore A Rogue of One's Own League of Extraordinary Women www.eviedunmore.com www.facebook.com/EvieDunmoreAuthor www.instagram.com/evietheauthor www.twitter.com/evie_dunmore“POT-TAIL PONDERING” – 48:55Johnnie Walker Black Label Aged 12 Years www.johnniewalker.com www.facebook.com/johnniewalker www.instagram.com/johnniewalker www.twitter.com/johnniewalker www.youtube.com/user/JohnnieWalkerUSF*ck, Marry, Kill:  Zachary Bronson, Alex Raiford, Rhys Winterborne Next – Portrait of a Scotsman with Author Evie Dunmore and Friend of the Pod @biologistreadsromanceHosts - Toni Rose & Wendy WooEmail - litwallflowerspodcast@gmail.comFollow on www.instagram.com/litwallflowerspodcast Shop at https://www.zazzle.com/store/lit_wallflowers/products Website https://linktr.ee/litwallflowersLit Wallflowers is part of the Frolic Podcast Network.  You can find more outstanding podcasts to subscribe to at Frolic.media/podcasts!

Evie Dunmore's 2-year anniversary of “Bringing Down the Duke” is being celebrated with a giveaway bundle!  Follow her on Instagram for more details.Annabelle Archer got the opportunity of a lifetime!  She was accepted as part of the first cohort of women to take courses at Oxford University with a scholarship from the National Society for Woman's Suffrage.  Her first task with NSWS was to hand out pamphlets about amending the Married Woman's Property Act to a man of influence.  She found a target, however the Duke of Montgomery, was the best and worst target.  He was the top strategist on the opposing side.  Annabelle, three suffragists, and a chaperone (of course!) attended a house party hosted by the Duke's brother to find out more information on the his plans.  But the Duke returned early and kicked her out of his house.  The misunderstanding was quick to be righted, but after bringing the duke down from atop his horse for an apology. These enemies continued to work for their side, but their growing intellectual attraction had them in an alcove, in a jail cell, and making propositions.  Annabelle and Sebastian wanted more from each other, but she refused to be a mistress.Falling for someone in a different social class had few solutions.  Dukes were meant to take them as a mistress, not marry them.  However, not every woman of interest wants to be a mistress, they may want to take a lover because they simply want to.  Join us as we discuss bluestocking Annabelle knowing what she wants and the Duke getting what he wants, regardless of society's rules!DRAWING ROOM DISCUSSIONS –Actual biologist Mien of @biologistreadsromanceMax Ginsburg artist www.instagram.com/ginsburgUnicorn books on Mien's Ebay storewww.ebay.com/usr/biologistreadsromance“OFFICIAL, UNOFFICIAL BOOK REVIEW”– 9:21Featuring –Evie DunmoreBringing Down the DukeLeague of Extraordinary Womenwww.eviedunmore.comwww.facebook.com/EvieDunmoreAuthorwww.instagram.com/evietheauthorwww.twitter.com/evie_dunmore“POT-TAIL PONDERING” – 44:38Johnnie Walker Black LabelAged 12 Yearswww.johnniewalker.comwww.facebook.com/johnniewalkerwww.instagram.com/johnniewalkerwww.twitter.com/johnniewalkerwww.youtube.com/user/JohnnieWalkerUSF*ck, Marry, Kill:  Derek Craven, Zachary Bronson, Simon Duke of HastingsNext – A Rogue of One's Own by Evie Dunmore with Friend of the Pod @biologistreadsromance Hosts - Toni Rose & Wendy Woo Email - litwallflowerspodcast@gmail.com Follow on www.instagram.com/litwallflowerspodcast Shop at https://www.zazzle.com/store/lit_wallflowers/products Website https://linktr.ee/litwallflowersLit Wallflowers is part of the Frolic Podcast Network.  You can find more outstanding podcasts to subscribe to at Frolic.media/podcasts!

Evie Dunmore's debut romance, Bringing Down the Duke, was named as one of the best romances of the year by Publishers Weekly – a remarkable win for a first-time novelist – and even more surprising when you know that English is Evie's second language. Now Evie continues with a new book in the series, A Rogue of One's Own. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and in this Binge Reading episode Evie talks about why she was attracted to an extraordinary group of women – the first women students at Oxford University – for her suffragist era historical romance. She tells why she swapped academia and a career in international business for romance writing. Jenny Wheeler: But now, here's Evie. Hello there Evie, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Evie Dunmore: Good morning, or at least it's morning where I am right now. Thank you for having me. Introducing Evie Dunmore Jenny Wheeler: You're in Germany and it's first thing in the morning, and I'm in Auckland, New Zealand, one day into lockdown for the second time. We're still all being affected by the pandemic in one way or another, I'm afraid. Evie Dunmore - Romance author Evie, you embarked on a historical romance series called The League of Extraordinary Women which is set in the late 19th century, the 1880s. It deals with the suffragist movement, the women's movement of those years. I use the word ‘suffragist' because it is subtly different from suffragette, isn't it? Can you explain the difference and why it's important? Evie Dunmore: Yes, certainly. The one thing to know is that the term ‘suffragist' precedes the term ‘suffragettes'. At least in Britain, the term suffragette wasn't used until 1906, which was when the Daily Mail created the term. Basically, it's an insult for Emmeline Pankhurst's more radical arm of the suffrage movement because those ladies were causing you a lot of trouble and the suffragists who followed Pankhurst reclaimed the term. They said, okay, suffragette is quite nice, and it sets us apart from the suffragists. The difference between the two is that the suffragists were using peaceful methods to work for change until the vote was granted in 1918 in Britain, and the suffragettes were literally setting fire to things. So the suffragettes are the more radical women's rights activists that you associate with the imprisonment and the force feeding and the firebombing, and the suffragists, under Millicent Fawcett, were more focused on petitioning, lobby work, writing articles, but certainly both groups wanted the vote for women. Feminists falling in love Jenny Wheeler: The suffragists were working through the mechanisms that society accepted, whereas the suffragettes were willing to do extreme things like throwing themselves under horses at races and things like that. Evie Dunmore: Exactly. At the time, in 1880, the suffragists were already considered quite a radical group. But nearly 30 years later and nothing much had happened that they wanted to happen, so things were getting more heated in certain corners in the movement. Jenny Wheeler: They ran out of patience. Would it be fair to say that these romances are about feminists falling in love? There is a kind of dislocation between the idea of these women, who are so intent on independence, also finding romance.
