After being exposed to the so-called bad boys of bodybuilding with Double Trouble last year, Dave decided to pick the breakthrough movie for Peter and David Paul. The Canon Films sword-and-sorcery adventure, The Barbarians. The Barbarians (1987) was a quintessential example of 1980s sword-and-sorcery filmmaking, helmed by cult director Ruggero Deodato, best known for his controversial work on Cannibal Holocaust. Shot on location in Italy and Yugoslavia, the film embraced the rugged landscapes and ancient ruins of Eastern Europe to create its gritty, fantastical world. The producers, including the legendary Cannon Group, aimed to capitalize on the success of films like Conan the Barbarian, infusing the project with a mix of campy action and over-the-top theatrics. Real-life bodybuilder twin brothers Peter and David Paul, dubbed "The Barbarian Brothers," were cast as the lead warriors, their muscular physiques and comedic chemistry serving as the film's primary draw. The production leaned heavily into the aesthetics of the genre, with elaborate costumes, oversized weapons, and practical effects dominating the visual style. Special care was given to creating the film's larger-than-life set pieces, which often featured a mix of brutal combat and exaggerated physical comedy. The soundtrack, composed by Pino Donaggio, added an epic, adventurous tone to the film. We’re moving into the new year by throwing a massive audio party here on the action movie podcast. New Year means new theme, and we’ve decided to throw a New Year’s Ninja Party for the next little while here. That means a non-stop cavalcade of ninja movies until either we get sick of it or the calendar turns over into a new month. First up on our list of ninja canon is the Canon Films movie that started the entire ninja craze of the 1980s, ENTER THE NINJA (1981). It stars Italian actor Franco Nero, the guy who stole Elvis’ wife, and some other dude who did the voice acting as the thickest mustachioed ninja you’ve ever seen in your life.

A heartwarming story about a deadbeat dad who abandoned his child and maybe sold drugs, and how he comes back into his son's life to encourage toxic behavior and violence and also disrespect towards his grandfather who just wants the best for him.  There's also lots of arm wrestling and Kenny Loggins, but not at the same time.

On this episode Matt and Brian talk about the campy cult favorite Masters of the Universe starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor! It helped kill Canon Films and was touted as the Star Wars of the 1980's. This movie is an oddity with a lot of heart, so come along, its going to be a good journey!
