The VHS Strikes Back

After being exposed to the so-called bad boys of bodybuilding with Double Trouble last year, Dave decided to pick the breakthrough movie for Peter and David Paul. The Canon Films sword-and-sorcery adventure, The Barbarians. The Barbarians (1987) was a quintessential example of 1980s sword-and-sorcery filmmaking, helmed by cult director Ruggero Deodato, best known for his controversial work on Cannibal Holocaust. Shot on location in Italy and Yugoslavia, the film embraced the rugged landscapes and ancient ruins of Eastern Europe to create its gritty, fantastical world. The producers, including the legendary Cannon Group, aimed to capitalize on the success of films like Conan the Barbarian, infusing the project with a mix of campy action and over-the-top theatrics. Real-life bodybuilder twin brothers Peter and David Paul, dubbed "The Barbarian Brothers," were cast as the lead warriors, their muscular physiques and comedic chemistry serving as the film's primary draw. The production leaned heavily into the aesthetics of the genre, with elaborate costumes, oversized weapons, and practical effects dominating the visual style. Special care was given to creating the film's larger-than-life set pieces, which often featured a mix of brutal combat and exaggerated physical comedy. The soundtrack, composed by Pino Donaggio, added an epic, adventurous tone to the film. While The Barbarians was far from a critical success, it gained a cult following for its unabashed embrace of cheesy spectacle and campy performances. Deodato's direction ensured that the film maintained a self-aware sense of humor, making it a memorable, if not particularly polished, entry into the sword-and-sorcery genre. They grow into mighty warriors determined to reclaim their freedom. Separated as children and forced into gladiatorial combat, the brothers reunite and embark on a quest to rescue their people and recover a magical ruby that holds the key to their tribe's survival. Along the way, they face off against Kadar's forces, monstrous creatures, and treacherous obstacles, relying on their strength, courage, and occasionally bumbling teamwork. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Have you ever wondered what happens when space vampires descend upon London? Brace yourself for our take on Tobe Hooper's 1985 sci-fi spectacle, "Lifeforce," a film that left us both baffled and entertained. We attempt to unravel the puzzling narrative with a healthy dose of humor and critique, spotlighting everything from Patrick Stewart's scene-stealing presence to the film's absurd portrayal of astronaut horniness and questionable quarantine protocols. Along the way, we indulge in a cocktail concoction of bourbon, coffee, vanilla liqueur, and orange bitters—trust us, it'll make the cinematic chaos easier to swallow.Join us as we pick apart the film's special effects, from outdated spaceship scenes to perplexing sound design, which add layers of unintentional comedy to the already bizarre storyline. We share our favorite poorly written lines and scenes so bewildering they could rival moments from "The Office." The film's oddball character names, incoherent plot, and gratuitous nudity provide endless fodder for our discussion, and we can't help but question Canon Films' audacious attempt to transcend its B-movie roots.Get ready for a whirlwind of "what the fuck" moments and intriguing trivia, like the film's mysterious corpses finding new life in "The Mummy" (1999). From the chaotic depiction of an apocalyptic London to Matilda May's performance amidst the madness, we reflect on "Lifeforce" as a cinematic relic that raises more questions than it answers. Grab your headphones and a stiff drink as we navigate through this cult classic with humor, nostalgia, and a touch of disbelief. Naked Space Vampires.  Using those three words to describe a movie directed by Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) written by Dan O'Bannon (Alien and Return of the Living Dead) and this podcast is fully invested. So what happened? How did a movie of such potential fall short? Well for one, it was made by Canon Films and while we certainly enjoy many of their crazy films, Canon doesn't have  much of a reputation for quality. Naked Space Vampires.  We wanted so much more.

Welcome to the first instalment of our sub-set of show exclusively looking at the Slasher Collection releases of 88 Films. 88 Films have, for the last 3 years or so, have been on a tear releasing a torrent of Slasher Classics in high definition. I have been purchasing them and it should be no surprise to anyone, I have left them pretty much unwatched (what can I say...I'm a compulsive collector). In order to watch the movies I buy, and of course create some quality content for you all Under the Stairs, I will be running through each of the movies on this bonus series between 1-2movies a month depending on the TPUTS schedule. So strap yourself in for a rollercoaster ride of blades, masks, hairspray, blood, boobs, crimes against fashion and dialogue to make you CRINGE!! Disc 9 has the 80’s powerhouse production of Canon Films behind it which means that X-Ray (1981) should have money and cult status…shouldn’t it? Lets see what Duncan makes of this “Slasher Classic”. The grading follows the Netflix rating style of 1 = Hated It, 2 = Didn’t Like It, 3 = Liked It, 4 = Really Liked It & 5 = Loved It X-Ray: Duncan: 3.5 Up next on the Slasher Classic Series is Disc 10 - The Boogey Man BUY OFFICIAL TPUTS MERCH FROM http://tputscast.bigcartel.com Check out the show on iTunes, TuneIn & on Stitcher Radio. With Avengers: Endgame releasing this week, the crew decided to take a look at the first Captain America appearance they remember: the 1990 trainwreck Captain America, produced by Canon Films co-owner Menahem Golan. With a Red Skull appearance somehow more surprising (and confusing) than his Avengers: Infinity War cameo and an off-brand origin for Cap himself, this one will be one for the ages. Listeners, Assemble!

Also, why did we have a pro wrestling chat without Nate? Who knows. We also talk about Canon Films and gritty reboots.

Our newest 0% movie is American Ninja from 1985. We go into the history of the series and the production company Canon Films who made some of the most badass films of the 80's. Did the director know how the army worked? How did Michael Dudikoff get the role over 2000 actors with a voice like that and no martial arts training?  IMDB Synopsis: American soldier, obviously very skilled in martial arts, single-handedly takes on mercenaries in the Philippines.
