The Invisible ManFor too long the male experience has been invisible. Traditionally the vast majority of tests and treatments have been focused on women. It's been assumed that men have the ‘easy bit' – all they need to do is go into a room with their favorite porn movie or magazine and wank! But is this really true? You'll hear Actor and Writer Rod Silvers talking about his short film England Expects which uses football as a metaphor for going through unsuccessful IVF, and he follows up play Terry and Jude which looks at the lives of two older, single, childless men and Elis Matthews – the rapping reverend – will be (over)sharing about the lived experience of a man diagnosed with azoospermia and his unconventional route to parenthood. Rod and Ellis joined the panel discussion with leading fertility experts of the ‘male experience', Dr. Benjamin Abramov, Medical Director, Gennet City Fertility, and Jonathan RamsayConsultant Urologist at Hammersmith & Charing Cross Hospital and was chaired by Anya Sizer from Fertility Network UK. Welcome to the season finale of Season Two and what a packed show we have in store for you; Archie’s been inspired by ex-Scotland International Alex Groves incredible achievement of swimming the channel and hence has started his own charity (which is as you can imagine somewhat ludicrous), we’re lucky enough to be briefly joined by Grovesy to discuss his epic achievement, Archie's finally an engaged man and hence Freddy is incredibly excited to hear how the whole engagement went down, we then surprise Archie by bringing on his older half-brother ‘Hector Curzon’ who reveals all about the Curzon family dynamic before Archie has a huge revelation which sends shock waves through the hearts and minds of both Freddy & Hector. Once that emotional hurdle is overcome we proceed to do a review of the season and Archie triggers out causally his awards to those guests who he has enjoyed the most throughout the season leading to a reunion with his fly-half brother in arms ‘Mr Freddie Burns’. Burnsy gives us an update on his current situation which sadly is being newly single and somewhat unemployed as he desperately waits for the Japanese borders to re-open - however this gives him the perfect platform to relay for the first time so incredibly entertaining and at times horrifying stories about his career and teammates to date. We also preview our 4 one off special interviews which are coming up in a couple of weeks time before we trigger off - Season 3 - starting off with Chloe Madeley and followed by some incredible names across the world of sport and business. What a week it has been on the podcast and in the life of a certain Archie Curzons aka The Magician aka The CEO of Clapham aka The CCO aka The Vibrator! On the pod this week we hear about his upcoming engagement, the ring he has designed for his soon to be fiancée, how he is planning on telling her old man, and most importantly what he has in store for the upcoming week. In order for him to choose his best-man to organise his stag-do we have both Nick Abendanon & James Haskell on the show to have a banter shootout with one another, so that Archie can decide who is going to get that much coveted spot, as there can only be one man for the job! They discuss what they would both bring to the role but more importantly why the other man should not be trusted recalling past stories of; nights out together, incidents on and off the rugby pitch and in each others personal lives. It gets pretty messy....We also are delighted to have on the show the CEO of Killing Kittens; Emma Sayle - Killing Kittens is the world’s most exclusive, decadent and hedonistic parties, fully focused on the pursuit of female pleasure. Archie is intrigued to find out more about the weird and wonderful underground sex world, fetishes, kinks, things to try out in the boudoir and ultimately pitches himself to become the firs ever male member. ------ WE'VE GOT A SPONSOR - GET 20% OFF ALL MANSCAPED PRODUCTS NOW FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY - WITH THE CODE - RIGBIZ20 AT CHECKOUT - https://uk.manscaped.com/THEY'VE INVENTED THE WORLDS FIRST RAZOR WHICH DOESN'T CUT YOUR BALLS - SO TREAT YOURSELF TO A FEARLESS TRIM NOW!-----Join The Falcons and purchase your cap for pre-season now here - https://rexclub.wpengine.com/product/clapham-falcons/We will be supporting two charities this season, the first being that of 'Move For Zoe', where this weekend we're asking all our listeners to go out and run 5/10KM and donate £10 to raise money for the Move For Zoë foundation.Zoë who was a great school friend of mine suffered a brain haemorrhage in August 2019 as a result of a previously undetected acute Leukaemia. Having spent 3 months alone in isolation in Clapham, Archie has decided that he needs to find himself a wife and hence has given himself the somewhat ridiculous challenge, of trying to secure a wife over the next 10 weeks. My long term Twitter friend Nathalie Mahieu is the unofficial and massively dedicated guardian of the Peregrine Falcons that nest on a disused balcony on London's Charing Cross Hospital. Their social media accounts (@fabperegrines & Fulham and Barnes Peregrines) document the daily trials and tribulations of the longstanding pair, Tom and Charlie, via webcam. Giving intimate insight into what really goes on in the private lives of this iconic bird, the fastest animal on the planet and one that almost became extinct globally in the 1950's and 60's.Now making a solid comeback in our cities, we catch up with Nathalie in the Margravine Cemetery to watch the latest action unfolding in a week of high drama on the famous peregrine balcony. Charlie has gone missing, and there's a new girl in town. What happened? Listen to find out!Sean's Wild Life podcast is produced and edited by Thomas Ntinas. SURPRISE! For Christmas you get a new episode a day early! Our Christmas Special is an ode to the NHS, and to all of the doctors, nurses, HCAs, porters and cleaners working hard over the festive period to keep us safe! As such, my guest this week is Robbie Hammond, a junior doctor working at Charing Cross Hospital. He'll be working a 13 hour shift on the big day so wishing him a very merry crimbo on the ward!
Dr Mark Porter finds out about 'singing for lung health', an evidence based therapy for helping people with breathlessness arising from conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. He hears from the choir based at Charing Cross Hospital in London and talks to respiratory physiologist, Adam Lound, to find out how the breathing and singing techniques being taught there, as well as the camaraderie, improve people's quality of life and confidence. Does exercise increase the risk of worsening an aortic aneurysm? Consultant vascular surgeon, Rachel Bell talks about the benefits of cardio vascular exercise for people with aneurysms. Dr Margaret McCartney reviews the evidence on sunscreens. Also in the programme, Saiju Jacob discusses myasthenia gravis, an auto-immune condition that causes muscle weakening. He explains what causes it and how it's treated.
Paul Rosen interviews Richard Packard about his early experience of phaco. Dr Packard talks about working with Eric Arnott at the Charing Cross Hospital in London,UK, the first phaco machines, the opposition he encountered from many of his colleagues and the eventual acceptance of the procedure. Paul Rosen interviews Patrick Condon about the early days of phacoemulsification. Irish surgeon Patrick Condon visited Charles Kelman in New York, where he observed surgeries and travelled with Kelman by private helicopter, as well as later bringing him to Ireland in the mid-1980s. He also worked with Eric Arnott in London, where he learned the procedure. He tells Paul Rosen how the development of capsulorhexis and lens implants were key to phaco going mainstream, following years of heavy opposition, and looks to the future to see what direction the surgery will go in next Sean Henahan talks to Bekir Sitki Aslan, Head of Eye Department, Ankara Memorial Hospital, Turkey about what has changed 50 years after the introduction of phaco.
There are many myths about recovery from a heart attack. The most dangerous is that exercise is too risky. The truth is that for most people, they should be doing much more exercise, not less. Patrick Doherty, Professor of Cardiovascular Health at York University and lead author for the National Audit of Cardiac Rehab tells Dr Mark Porter that 70,000 people who should be accessing life saving cardiac rehabilitation therapy are missing out. The answer? Don't blame the patients but improve the design of rehab packages, he says. Inside Health visits a rehab session at Charing Cross Hospital in London and hears from cardiac patients about the impact of supported exercise programmes on their health. A group of psychiatrists, psychologists and patients have complained to the Royal College of Psychiatrists about the withdrawal effects of antidepressants. They say claims that side effects are resolved, for the majority of patients, within a few weeks of stopping treatment are false and in fact, many people suffer unpleasant, frightening symptoms for much longer. Inside Health's Dr Margaret McCartney looks at the evidence. We're all familiar with hearing aids, amplifiers which boost volume in a failing ear. And you might have heard of cochlear implants which, in people too deaf for aids, can be used to send signals directly to the inner part of the ear, and on to the brain. But in the future we're likely to hear more about middle ear implants, devices implanted because the outer ear hasn't developed properly. ENT surgeons at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in London, Professor Dan Jiang and Harry Powell, have performed a middle ear implant on the UK's youngest ever patient, Charlotte Wright was just three years old when she had this pioneering treatment. Producer: Fiona Hill.

Sunday, September 2nd - European Society of Cardiology Congress, 2007, 1-5 September, Vienna, Austria 1. Blood Pressure Drugs Reduce Mortality in Patients with Diabetes: The ADVANCE Study REFERENCE: Abstract 312 Hot Line 1 Sunday STEPHEN MACMAHON, The George Institute, University of Sydney COMMENT: RAYMOND GIBBONS, Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN The randomised placebo controlled ADVANCE study of 11000 patients with diabetes has demonstrated that a combination of the ACE inhibitor, perindopril, with the diuretic indapamide can lower blood pressure and mortality. The investigators saw an impact even in patients who did not have high blood pressure. Lead study author Stephen MacMahon said this approach should be included in current practise guidelines. Sarah Maxwell spoke with him at the meeting in Vienna. Commented on Stephen McMahon's presentation of the ADVANCE study looking at the use of perindopril plus indapamide among patients with diabetes: a study with 11 000 patients divided between active and placebo in which a 14 per cent improvement in all-cause mortality, an 18 per cent reduction of cardiovascular deaths, was achieved together with reductions of the incidence of both renal and coronary disease. 2. Lifestyle and Heart Disease in Europe: A Growing Problem REFERENCE: Abstract 316 DAVID WOOD, Charing Cross Hospital, London Among 8000 coronary patients in 9 European countries, smoking prevalence hasn’t changed over the last 12 years, and obesity is going up – that’s according to the combined EUROASPIRE surveys, which were presented at the ESC congress. Derek Thorne got more from David Wood, of Charing Cross Hospital in London. 3. Drug Eluting Stents, Bare Metal Stents: No Survival Difference REFERENCE: Hot Line 1 Sunday 11:00 2 Sept/ESC Congress 2007 Vienna 1-5 September STEFAN JAMES, Uppsala Clinical Research Centre, Sweden COMMENT: RAYMOND GIBBONS, Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN Another year’s results of the long term outcome of using drug-eluting stents as compared with bare-metal stents from Sweden reveal that there is no longer an increased risk of late mortality when using drug-eluting stents according to Stefan James of Uppsala Clinical Research Centre. He suggested that improvements in technique have helped reduce the risk of death or myocardial infarction associated with using drug-eluting stents nevertheless the risk of blood clots still remains. Overall survival of patients was found to be the similar for both categories of stent.
