If you don't memorize Scripture, you won't be able to stand against the devil. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar each share how storing God's Word in their hearts transformed their faith and equipped them for spiritual battle. E.Z. didn't grow up with the Bible, and when he discovered it, he became captivated by its sweetness and power to guide his life. Memorization fills minds with good things, yet it has become a lost discipline in the modern church. How valuable it would be to have Scripture ready to encourage a friend, for from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The more we store God's Word, the more we live by it.The early church eagerly gathered to hear Scripture read aloud, but today many settle for spiritual fast food instead of feasting on truth. Ray warns that the church often treats the Bible like a fragile artifact rather than a living guide meant to be used and marked. They are warned not to show special treatment to the rich while ignoring the poor, because all people are equally valuable to God. Favoritism contradicts the command to love your neighbor as yourself. Breaking even one part of God's law is akin to breaking the entire law. Believers are called to live with mercy, knowing that God will show mercy to those who extend it. The second half of the chapter emphasizes the connection between faith and works. Faith that is not accompanied by action is dead and worthless. True faith transforms the way people live. It is demonstrated through obedience, compassion, and good deeds that reflect a living and active trust in God, in the likeness of Abraham. Our faith should be evident in how we live and treat others. When we show kindness, serve with humility, and care for those in need, we reflect the heart of God. We are called to love everyone, not just those who seem important or easy to love. Let our lives be full of grace, service, and a deep desire to prove what we believe. Heavenly Father, thank You for leading us to faith and showing us how to live with love and mercy. Help us see every person through Your eyes and treat them with kindness and respect. Teach us to put our faith into action, not just in words but with true compassion and care, serving others with diligence. Let our lives reflect the goodness You have shown us. Remove any pride or favoritism from our hearts and fill us with a desire to be active in obedience. Teach us to have the courage of Abraham and Rahab, trusting Your will in all circumstances. Thought Questions: Is favoritism still an issue among God's people today? Read OnlineJesus said to his disciples, “A rich man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property. He summoned him and said, ‘What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.'” Luke 16:1–2There is much to ponder in this parable and many lessons from which we can learn. To begin, the rich man should be understood as God and you as the steward. This is an important first lesson to learn because it reveals to us that, when it comes to material things in this world, God is the true owner of all—we are only stewards. Think about that carefully. When it comes to all that you own, all your money and possessions, do you hold on to it as if you were the complete master of these material items? Clearly most people do think this way. They may work hard to earn a living, save and buy this and that, build up their bank accounts, and then remain very attached to these material things, seeing them as “mine” rather than as God's. So the first very challenging lesson we should look at is that all we “own” is actually the possession of God. He only permits us to be stewards of the things of this world. Do you believe that?As stewards, we must be committed to use the riches within our stewardship only in the way that God wants it used. In this parable, the steward was reported to the rich man for “squandering his property.” We also are guilty of squandering the possessions of God when we use money in accord with our own will and desires rather than those of God's. This is an exceptionally common tendency, especially for those who have become the stewards of much money. Therefore, the more money that one has stewardship over, the more they will be tempted to squander it, meaning, use it for selfish purposes rather than for the glory of God in accord with His will. This is a hard teaching to accept and live. But these truths are indeed revealed to us by this parable, so it is essential that we listen.The words spoken by the rich man, “Prepare a full account of your stewardship,” are words that we must all anticipate hearing one day. If that day were today, what would that “full account of your stewardship” look like? Have you worked hard for selfish gain? Or have you worked hard to act with great responsibility over the things God has entrusted to your care?As the parable continues, we read that the steward acted “prudently” in that he devised a plan to make sure his material needs were met once he lost his position as steward. The “prudence,” however, that is spoken of here is a reference to the worldly, and therefore, evil ingenuity, cleverness, hard work and commitment many people have regarding the material wealth they seek to obtain in this world. Though it is good to be diligent and hardworking in life, too often this is done for the purpose of selfish gain. Just imagine if everyone who worked so hard at getting rich put even more effort into building up the Kingdom of God on earth! How different this world would be if we had so many hard workers for God's mission. Reflect, today, upon the simple truth that when it comes to the riches of this world, you are only the steward of what you possess, not its master. God wants you free from the attachment to material wealth so that you will be free to use all that you have for His glory and in accord with His purpose. That does not mean that you must donate all you have to charities. Instead, it means that you continually offer all that you have to God and seek to use it in accord with His will and His will alone. If that means you discern that God wants you to buy something new, then buy something new. If that means giving more away, then give more away. If that means living more simply as a holy sacrifice, then do just that. Money cannot buy happiness. Only embracing God's will to the fullest will result in the happiness and fulfillment you deeply desire. My Lord of all riches, You and You alone are the Master of all things created. All that I have and possess are Yours, dear Lord. Help me to believe this and to live my life purely as a steward of the possessions I have. Here is the transcription of the devotional given after the Scripture readings and before the prayer, matched in tone, style, and format to your example: TODAY'S DEVOTION: This journey into God that provided you with forgiveness of sins, that gave you a joyful and grateful spirit, that made you a caring and generous person, that journey began by faith. When you woke up to the gift that God had given you in Christ and the truth of who you have now become in Christ, none of that happened by trying to become a good law keeper. These dear people in Galatia are being told that they must become circumcised. They must become Jewish converts. They're being instructed to follow the laws of Moses—the dietary laws, the dates, the deeds—all of it, because all of it would be necessary if they wanted to be counted among God's people. They're being told that Jesus was, in effect, a kind of first step to this new life and community. As Jewish converts, they would have to take the next step, and that meant circumcision. It's out of these pressures that Paul is urging them not to trade their freedom for chains, and the blessing of life for what he calls the curse of the law. Paul is saying that Jesus is the first and only step. The law was never meant to make us right with God. The law was given to come alongside us and convince our hearts of our need for a Redeemer and a Savior. It's there to point us to the cross—to God's self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. It's faith in what he has done, and what we have now become. That's where the joy is. And that's where Paul wants this church—and you and I—to live from. That's Paul's plea, not only to the Galatians, but to you and to me. What God has done for you in Christ is all that need be done. Paul wants us to keep our eyes fixed on him—not on ourselves—looking outward and upward and being changed and transformed as we look to him. So let's fix our eyes on Christ our Savior, on his beautiful life, continuing to look to him in faith, growing in Christ until He is fully formed in us. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. I love the words of Jesus. I've discovered that most people do, even non-believers. You can even purchase Bibles that only have the words of Jesus printed. It's been said that no one speaks like Jesus and I would agree. His words have power and they have life. These truths are encouraging, uplifting, inspiring, and challenging. They changed people's lives in the first century, and they are still changing lives today.  But you would have to agree that as much as we love the words of Jesus, we also recognize that Jesus said some hard things, some very hard things.Main Points:1. Today, as Christians, we view the cross as a symbol of forgiveness, grace, and love. But in Jesus' day, the cross represented nothing but torturous death. The Romans forced convicted criminals to carry their own crosses to the place of crucifixion.2. For the followers of Jesus, taking up our cross means “dying to self.” It's a call to absolute surrender. It means choosing Jesus above all things. It means putting him first and dying to our desires, ambitions, and worldly pleasures. Jesus said if we “lose our life, we will find it.” The reward for choosing Christ over everything else is matchless.3. We carry our cross and die to ourselves because Jesus alone is worthy. Today's Scripture Verses:Luke 9:23 - “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. Gospel Luke 15:1-10 The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." So Jesus addressed this parable to them. "What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance. "Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it? And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.' In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents." Reflection I love when Jesus bases his examples on something we all know, something part of the human condition. If I lose something, especially if it's a value, my wallet, my credit card or whatever, I become consumed about it until I can find it. And that kind of high sensitivity to something is something that Jesus is using to tell us that that's the anxiety, that's the concern, that's the place he is when we are not with him, when we're lost, when we make bad choices. He longs for us to come back to him, and he'll do everything he can to find a way to lead us. Just as we try to find the place where we left something valuable. Closing Prayer Father, help us to know your love, your concern, your focus. It's impossible for us to think that you, one God, can be intimately engaged in the inner life of every human being, every creature you've ever created, everything that you have in the world is part of you. Help us to fathom that great mystery and feel the closeness that you have with us, so we can feel the closeness that we want with you. We ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. The reward makes it all worth it...

Most of us experience some level of peace in this life. In fact, people will go to great lengths trying to find peace. But when a person dies without Jesus Christ, they will exist in a place called hell. Hell is absent of all peace and it's for all eternity. To have no peace is to have no rest. After a short time, a person becomes irritable and frustrated. With no peace, a person's mind is tormented. In hell, there is never any rest from the screams, the fear, the thirst, the lack of breath, the heat, the isolation from people, and the hopelessness. You know, handmade gifts are always the most special. Well, there are better crafted doll houses than the one my daughter got when she was a little girl. But we made it; it's handmade. My wife and I, for better or worse, did it with our own hands. One December we closed the basement and we started hammering and sawing away to build that doll house. There was a sign on the door that said "Do Not Open Till Christmas." That meant the basement. That drove the kids crazy, but we were having a great time doing it. Frankly, my month was crammed. But even though the work we did was often very late and it took quite a few hours, especially since I'm not the neighborhood handyman, I enjoyed every minute of working on it. Did I get tired? Yes. Was I too busy to do that doll house? Yes. Was it outside the things I do well? Yes. Was it a pleasure? Yes. Why? Because it was for a little girl I loved very much. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "What Love Does to Work." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from Luke 7, and I'm going to begin reading at verse 37. It's the familiar story of the lady who loved Jesus very, very deeply. "When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume. And as she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them." Now, there's a discussion by the Pharisee with Jesus as to why she did all of this. And He simply says, "For she loved much." She loves her Master, and she uses everything she can find to serve Him. She kisses His feet. She says, "Wait, I have this perfume. I could use that to express my love for Him, and she breaks open that perfume." She says, "I've got my hair. I can dry His feet with my hair." It's as if she is looking for everything she can use to love Jesus with it. There's a principle here. Work is so different when it's an act of loving worship instead of grudging duty. Colossians 3:23 says, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord and not for men." And then it says, "It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Maybe you've just been cranking out your responsibilities lately and it's joyless - drudgery. Maybe those who are around you would testify to hearing more complaining and negative talk lately. It could be you're working for the wrong person. No, no, not for your boss. Don't do it for your boss, your company, your pastor, your church, your ministry, or your teachers. Don't do it for your children even, or your employees. See, work becomes lighter and more joyful when you begin each responsibility by saying, "Lord, I dedicate this everyday chore to You. I love You, and this job I'm doing, I'm doing as an offering to You. I'm giving it my best. I'm doing it for you, Jesus." A woman in this story used everything she could find to love Jesus. It's a beautiful picture - grabbing everything you do as something with which to love your Master. You're busy, tired, maybe feeling inadequate, like I did when I built that doll house. But it was for someone I really loved. Do your work for someone you really love. You may not love your work, but it makes a difference when you do your work for love.

Jessica Van Roekel joins me to explore the heart issue behind grumbling and complaining and how it reflects a lack of trust in God’s provision and plan. Grumbling is self-focused and rooted in unmet expectations, comparison, stress, and a scarcity mindset, leading to drained joy, strained relationships, and a disconnection from God’s presence. In contrast, lament allows us to honestly share our pain with God while trusting His sovereignty. Together, we discuss practical ways to combat a grumbling spirit, such as focusing on blessings, practicing gratitude, and seeking accountability. By shifting our perspective from what we lack to what we have in Christ, we can experience renewed joy, peace, and a deeper dependence on God, even in life’s challenges. Quotables from the episode: God has the standards but I sometimes like to superimpose my standards on it and so then I struggle with perfectionism which is really driven out of insecurity and fear of rejection and I find myself getting into this grumbling cycle. Sometimes when I'm in that cycle and then I choose gratitude, it feels a little fake. I don't know if I'm really truly genuine. And so I'm trying to understand that when God has called me to a new thing, it's going to feel a little not real at the moment or it's not going to feel as authentic because I'm starting a new habit. It's just like any time we try to establish a new habit. It takes time. It takes practice. It feels awkward at first and there are some personality types that lend themselves more quickly to grumbling and complaining and I think there are some personality types that lend themselves to always seeing the good in every situation and I want to be more like the latter than the former. God's heart for you is good he wants you to trust him he wants you to let the love for him flow from a heart of gratitude for what he's done. It is not just that grumbling reflects a lack of trust in God, but it really disdains him. And that's what really convicted me, is the fact that when I complain, I'm really disdaining God's work in my life because our circumstances flux from good to, they could be better, to I don't want to be here. Why am I here? And so when we then start complaining and grumbling against God, it really disdains the work that he's doing. There's a passage in Psalms that says that everything that touches our lives has to pass through his hands first. And when I, when I cut my hand, like a bowl like this, you know, there's, I think of God's hand being cupped. And I'm thinking, what is he actually also preventing from hitting my life? Because when we, when we cup our hands and water runs through them, there is a pool of water that stays in our hands. When we grumble and complain, it reminds me of when we give a gift to someone and they don't receive it with a heart of gratitude. How hurtful that can be when our heart is for them. Yet when we grumble and complain, it's like saying, "Yeah, that wasn't good enough, God. That's what I wanted." And who am I to tell God what to do? In fact, but we also have to give space for our heartaches too. Psalm 62:8 says to pour out your heart to God. To look at Lament at first glance, it could look like grumbling and complaining. It's a fine distinction. Grumbling and complaining come from a heart of, I deserve this. So, grumbling and complaining is very self -focused, but lament is approaching God honestly, sharing our pain but recognizing that he is sovereign and his will be done and it gives the essence of I don't like where I'm at but I trust that your way is best. Grumbling and complaining is self-driven with a heart that is not trusting God's sovereignty. Whereas lamenting is sharing our heartache. It's telling our heartache to God with a surrender to his sovereignty. It's almost as if grumbling and complaining is talking bad about God and lamenting is just talking to God, inviting him in to soothe our heart too. And then David has written so many wonderful songs where really it teaches us how to lament. He starts out with like, "Oh, my life is awful God. Why did you allow this to happen? You said you were faithful." And then in the next verse he's like, "But you are faithful God. I'm going to praise your name. I'm going to trust you. You're steadfast and merciful." God desires us to grow in trust and dependence on Him, even during challenging times. There are common reasons we fall into grumbling, like unmet expectations, comparison, stress, and focusing on what we lack rather than what we have. Grumbling and complaining is speaking against God and is forming idols out of what it is we want and/or think we deserve. A grumbling spirit can drain our joy, disconnect us from God’s presence, and even negatively impact our relationships with others. Focusing on blessings, even small ones, can reshape our perspective, making it easier to find peace and joy in God’s presence. Keep a journal or ask a friend to hold yourself accountable in a loving way. Maybe even wear a rubber band on your wrist and flick it every time you notice yourself complaining in order to increase our awareness of how habitual this really is. Practice replacing each complaint with something to be thankful for. This helps to shift from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance in God. Ask God for help in changing your hearts and to help you see His blessings more clearly each day.
