3275: Cloudflare Discusses AI, Quantum Risk, and Data Protection

In today's episode of Tech Talks Daily, I sit down with Christian Reilly, Field CTO for EMEA at Cloudflare, the Connectivity Cloud company, to examine the latest findings from their cybersecurity research and what they reveal about how prepared different industries really are. While sectors like IT, gaming, and financial services have seen a higher volume of cyberattacks, they also report greater readiness and resilience. In contrast, industries like education and healthcare, although less frequently targeted, remain far less prepared to defend against growing threats. This gap raises important questions about how organizations approach security depending on their legacy systems, revenue models, and digital maturity. Christian brings years of frontline experience to the discussion and shares actionable insights into how companies can build cybersecurity strategies that not only protect but also improve performance. From the shift toward zero trust architecture to the critical role of board-level engagement, we explore how forward-thinking organizations are rethinking the role of cybersecurity in modern digital operations. He explains why simplicity often beats complexity, and how reducing friction for end users is key to long-term resilience. We also look ahead to some of the key trends shaping the future of security. Christian dives into the challenges posed by emerging technologies such as quantum computing, AI, and the explosion of data generated by IoT and smart infrastructure. He stresses the importance of preparing now for scenarios like Harvest Now, Decrypt Later, and why organizations need to begin thinking seriously about post-quantum cryptography. On the human side, Christian outlines what effective training looks like today and how to shift employee culture from compliance to awareness. If you're wondering how to stay one step ahead of evolving threats, this conversation offers a wealth of insight from the heart of the Connectivity Cloud. How is your organization preparing for what's coming next?

Hello and welcome to this episode of Physical Attraction. We have a special couple of guests on the show today. Listeners to our episodes about QE for the People will remember that we briefly mentioned Modern Monetary Theory as a new perspective on how economics works, and I'd talked about getting some MMT speakers on the show to explore that in more detail. I was lucky enough to get the hosts of the MMT Podcast, Patricia Pino and Christian Reilly, who have interviewed many of the founding scholars and most active economists in MMT as part of that brilliant podcast. We had a very wide-ranging discussion, they were incredibly generous with their time, which I am grateful for. In our discussion, we'll be talking about some of Modern Monetary Theory's big ideas, including: Why everything you were taught about where money came from, and comes from is wrong Why your taxes technically don't pay for the things you think they pay for Why the US and UK governments cannot "run out of money", and why you maybe shouldn't be so afraid of the national debt What the real limits on government spending actually are Why the current economic theories require millions of people to be long-term unemployed, and why   I've divided the podcast into two episodes. The first deals with a background of MMT, exploring the historical and anthropological question "Where does money come from?". The second episode (which is longer!) deals with the consequences of Modern Monetary Theory for our society, some ideas of how it can be used to run economies more effectively and solve many of the biggest problems that we face in the world, and is therefore slightly more political, so there is a content warning there if you don't want to hear any discussion of politics. I realise that this podcast is not an economics podcast, and it's not billed as such. But I have become convinced, especially recently, that so many of the concerns that we have been talking about recently - this intersection between technology, inequality, and global catastrophic risks, the necessity of dealing with climate change, and so much else in the world - it is necessary to have a deeper understanding of economics, which is in the background of so much that is going on in the world. MMT, to my mind, when it's properly interpreted and described, makes some points that the "classical" understanding of economics misses out on. And even if you disagree with it, I think it's a fascinating area: I have certainly been fascinated by it - and I hope that you find it valuable. As ever - if not, you can always get in touch with me via the contact form on physicspodcast.com and let me know what you think... or just wait a few days and we'll have a different episode available for you on a different subject. Just don't ask for your money back.               Thanks very much for listening to this episode. You can find the Modern Monetary Theory podcast where-ever you're listening to this, and I really do recommend it if you want to hear about much more details on MMT directly from the economists who are working on this stuff; they are on Twitter at MMTPodcast, where you can also find Christian and Patricia's own accounts if you want to follow them. They also have a Patreon with bonus episodes, just like we do, so do check that out as well. And many thanks again to them for coming on the show. As for our show, we are on the web at physicspodcast.com. Any comments, questions, concerns, things you'd like to hear about, feedback for this episode which I know is a little outside what we often talk about - please do let me know, I'd love to hear what you think, and the contact form is there, it goes to my email and I try to respond to everything people send. The UK’s MMT Podcast has been an inspiration to us since well before we launched Macro n Cheese. As fellow MMT promoters from outside the academy, we consider the co-hosts, Patricia Pino and Christian Reilly, to be kindred spirits. So it’s always a treat to have them as guests on our show. This week, it’s Patricia’s turn to explain the behavior of our UK cousins as we seek to learn lessons from their most recent electoral debacle. When Steve spoke with Patricia, she was still feeling intense disappointment and frustration in the wake of the Tory victory. Many in the Labour Party were in shock, trying to make sense of it all. Unfortunately, the most dominant voices are the least likely to admit fault. Attempting to understand Labour’s loss requires considering a multitude of layers -- economic, cultural and political -- historic issues of democracy which have been ignored for a long time. Patricia believes that the issues of sovereignty and perhaps even national identity, may play a stronger role in the UK than they do in the US. Britain joining the European Union was a blatant step in the continued abandonment of the nation-state. The challenge to their national sovereignty may appear to be less significant to the UK than to the Eurozone nations because the British retained the use of their own currency. Patricia explains that while the UK has more autonomy than the Eurozone countries, the government portrays the neoliberal policies of the EU as if they were mandated or part of an international treaty. The EU has no means of enforcing rules regarding deficits or privatization, but it applies enough political pressure to direct policy in a certain direction, simultaneously providing cover so the government can avoid claiming responsibility for unpopular policies. In both the UK and the US, elements of the right have tapped into discontent felt by marginalized members of society and gained a new throng of voters. Patricia refers to Jeremy Corbyn as a “Euro-skeptic,” which may explain why he understood the voters’ discontent in a way that other members of Labour’s leadership did not. Just as in the US, the party that was supposed to represent the interests of working people has proven to be out of touch. Labour voters had chosen Brexit; the Labour leadership was perceived as blocking it. The rank and file stopped believing their promises. As is always the case with Steve and his guests, the discussion turns to solutions -- specifically, how to deal with those people who are supposed to be on our side yet are still spreading incorrect analysis based on ridiculous assumptions, when applying the lens of MMT would bring things into focus. In the UK, even the so-called leftwing economists engage in the same kind of fear-mongering as the most dedicated neoliberal ideologues. Patricia clarifies that not all MMTers are Brexiters, but knowledge of MMT clearly illuminates the ills of the EU and the consequences of interfering with national sovereignty. Understanding how power is wielded through control of the currency naturally leads one to be an advocate for democratic systems of government. She suggests that she’s ready to step out of the functional finance silo and plans to start working with groups who may not yet support MMT but whose causes will be advanced through knowledge of it. With 5 years of Conservative rule to look forward to, she can’t afford to sit on the sidelines. None of us can. Patricia Pino is a London-based engineer, artist, and activist. She is co-host of the MMT Podcast and a founder of the Gower Institute of Modern Money Studies.  @PatriciaNPino on Twitter https://pileusmmt.libsyn.com/ https://gimms.org.uk/

Welcome to episode nine of Activist #MMT. Today I talk with ninth year MMT activist and London resident, Christian Reilly. Christian is a standup comedian and musician, and the creator and co-host of MMT Podcast, along with my recent guest, Patricia Pino (parts one and two). In this two-part episode (this is part two), Christian and I first talk about Christian himself: his comedy, how he got there, who inspired him, and the nature of his standup. He describes how his fiancé won a modest but important victory for England’s disabled population. We also discuss how Christian discovered MMT, the concepts of libertarianism and anarchism, how UBI and its flaws can be boiled down to its essence, and how the government sets the floor for not just jobs but also the value of money. We also briefly touch on my experience originally introducing MMT to Graham Elwood in June of 2018, and Christian’s current MMT introduction show which is a work in progress. Most importantly, however, we talk about the concept of permission marketing. Permission marketing, an idea originated with Seth Godin, is the idea of maximizing the impact of your hard work and core message by preparing your audience for it. This means properly introducing its concepts, and providing background and context before presenting the work itself. It also means getting to know your audience – and critically, letting them get to know you. This is a bit of a life lesson for me. I have always had confidence in my work as a singer, activist, writer, and MMT-er. At the same time, I have always felt a struggle getting my work to be listened to. My flaw was thinking that “if I only work even harder, if only my work was even better, then surely more people would listen to it.“ I now realize that I have, to a significant degree, not gotten that permission from my audience, and instead have neglected them by diving even deeper into my work. This is also true with those you work with. If you don’t get to know your colleagues and let them get to know you, your work will never be shared or built upon, and you won’t be asked to build upon theirs. I choose for my podcast to be not just about MMT, but about the MMTers themselves. If Christian and I had only discussed the academic concepts of MMT, we never would have encountered this topic and I would not have had this realization – a realization that will have a direct impact on my relationship with MMT. In addition to being the truth, this is MMT’s (and all of heterodox is) trump card: understanding the non-intellectual, non-academic concepts that provide the background and context, in which the academic concepts exist. This is the lesson I take from Fred Lee’s 2009 book, A History Of Heterodox Economics (which I am currently halfway through): That the community history of economics is actually more important than its intellectual history. MMT will succeed because it is relaxed and flexible and can see – and adapt to – the world around it. Mainstream neoclassical economics can rely exclusively on its flawed intellectual concepts because, despite the world melting around them, it serves the powerful and therefore preserves themselves. Although that brute force and white knuckling may work for them, at least a little while, it does not work for MMT and heterodox. And for the first time, I realize that it definitely does not work for me. Steve Grumbine’s guest is Raul Carrillo of the New Economy Project and Modern Money Network.  As an anti-poverty & economic justice attorney he has a unique perspective on the monetary system. Raul talks about his seminal article, “The Dangerous Myth of Taxpayer Money,” and the legal history of taxation, citing the Supreme Court ruling that the gov’t has power to issue money backed only by the full faith & credit of the US gov’t - not backed by gold, taxes, or bonds.  He reveals some startling facts about the connection between taxation and the civil rights struggle for public education. Raul & Steve discuss the scramble to find truncated ways to present complex ideas.   Progressives must attack false scarcity, which is at the core of both conservative & liberal thinking.  Raul says that fighting for the Job Guarantee brings people to understand the concentration of power.  It’s an awareness that can create the momentum to take on the system itself.   Racial Taxation: Schools, Segregation, and Taxpayer Citizenship, 1869-1973, by Camille Walsh https://www.uncpress.org/book/9781469638942/racial-taxation/ https://splinternews.com/the-dangerous-myth-of-taxpayer-money-1819658902 @RaulACarrillo on Twitter Modern Money Network https://modernmoneynetwork.org/ New Economy Project https://www.neweconomynyc.org/   Special Thanks to Geoffrey Ginter for the excellent intro song! This means the Deficit is your asset When they spend it’s what you get  Otherwise known as the national debt Government produces it Reducing it reduces the Money supply This is spending in the world as we know it This is spending in the world as we know it Government debt’s not what you owe it’s what you own yeah, it’s absolutely fine So why the hell we paying taxes if the money’s manufactured By the state when it spends It’s because the government  Was voted in to do a thing To do a thing they need some things Like labour and materials But you don’t need their dollar bills  That’s why they impose a tax  In a token you don't have Now you need to work for it  They spend em out and take em back They leave some in your pocket  You can spend them at the market Because everybody needs Dollars for their tax bill or they’re going To get fined and sent to jail like Michael Cohen I’m sorry to make you think about Michael Cohen But I was desperate for a rhyme The other night I heard that chick Saying to a bunch of kids How you gonna pay for it? DIANNE FEINSTEIN Money is a tax credit  Duh you can’t run out of it Type it in the central bank The people’s wish is its command If we got resources Money wise we can afford it Right? Right! This is spending in the world and we know it This is spending in the world and we know it You got the power of the purse it’s time to show it Sunrise knows it’s time This is spending in the world and we know it Planet’s burning up and we know it Time to save the world, the status quo ain’t Gonna work this time This is spending in the world and we know it This is spending in the world and we know it This is spending in the world and we know it Someone tell Jill Stein (MMT Reality) This is spending in the world and we know it This is spending in the world and we know it This is spending in the world and we know it Feel the Bern this time (MMT Reality) This is spending in the world and we know it This is spending in the world and we know it This is spending in the world and we know it It’s absolutely fine

Thomas Malone is a professor of management at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, founder and director of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, and author of the 2018 book Superminds: The Surprising Power of People and Computers Thinking Together. The book explores the different ways groups of people make decisions, and how new forms of artificial intelligence, especially machine learning, can help. Malone predicts that AI, robotics, and automation will destroy many jobs—including those of high-skilled knowledge workers—while at the same time creating new ones. By investing in the right kinds of AI, he says, organizations can help keep workers productive and happy—and make sure our “superminds” are actually smarter than our regular minds. RHEFP 2013 #3: Norman Lovett and Christian Reilly - Colin's Revenge? Richard is reeling from a not really all that near death experience, but luckily Norman Lovett is on hand to provide laconic wisdom and laughs and the kind of honesty that comes with being one of comedy's elder statesmen. There is some frank discussion about Jimmy Savile and what he might have been trying to achieve in those mortuaries, whether Keith Allen can solve the world hunger crisis, what Phillip Schofield likes to do at 3pm and where John Lloyd expects others to buy furniture. There's a bit of Red Dwarf and The Young Ones and the young Edgar Wright, as well as the now customary chat about suicide, but it's mainly an afternoon in the charming company of a funny man. With AIOTM's (aiotm's) Christian Reilly providing some songs.

2012 #8: Advice for Flashers - Nina Conti and Christian Reilly. Richard has just seen an 80 year old man running for a bus and it's his highlight performance of the Fringe so far and he's a bit overexcited because his latest DVD 'What is Love, Anyway?' is now available from www.gofasterstripe.com (including the first ever videoed Me1 vs Me2 snooker match - which will annoy purists). But he's also a bit in awe because his guest is Nina Conti who has just released the fantastic documentary 'Her Master's Voice' and has worked with (and more) with his hero Ken Campbell. So he's keen to ask some serious questions about self and portraying different aspects of oneself and whether Stewart Lee has ever tried to get close to her ventriloquist dummies. You'll learn about the thinking (if any) behind Rich's snooker podcasts, Vent Heaven and what animal Nina would have sex with if she had to. Plus there's an appearance for Richard's second favourite ventriloquist dummy (that hasn't masturbate him) after Naughty Keith, Monk. And Richard does his best to cure his sex pest listeners step by step. There's music and laughter from the AIOTM (aiotm) star Christian Reilly.

9 May 2011 Christian Reilly, Randy Klein.  Voice of Americans! We resume after a three week break for Bank Holidays - who knew when we accepted this time slot we would be able to have the Mondays off so often? Not that we had much choice of time slots! This Voice of Americans show is gorgeous! It comes right after Osama bin Laden and Kate Middleton Wales were all over the press and Lisa and I were well rested.  Our special guest, Musician and comic Christian Reilly, ticked a few boxes - worked with Rich Hall, the funny American comedian and the most famous American comedian working in the country today, as Ruby Wax has waned a bit. He is a musician and sang a leftwing type song, which is sure to make many of our listeners feel smug, and he is a comic who has seen me perform my one man show at the Source Below [11 Lower John Street, Soho W1F 9TY, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 8 PM (God willing) - reservation information at www.lewisschaffer.co.uk or www.sourcebelow.com]. He loved it!!  Also on board was loyal friend and fellow Nunhead American Randy Klein. He is like my older, more successful older brother. We neglected to ask him what I need to help my comedy career Download V_of_A_9th_May_2011.mp3  -this was Chris Dixon's idea, and a good one. We shall do it next time.  But we did discuss the royal family, and only in Britain could we say not so nice things a country's monarchy and get away with it (we hope!). God Bless Britain for being so accepting. Chris wasn't here, except for a brief visit toward the end. Leanne Bower ably womanned the deck at our Borough High Street studios. A lovely, lovely show and one we are proud of!  ENJOY!!!! Sony nominated AIOTM (AIOTM) returns for its second series. In show one, 'Richard Merring' forms an uneasy coalition and progressive alliance with Dan Tetsell and Emma Kennedy in the hope that they can curb his worst excesses. But it's a spring clean and all the old favourites are being purged. No cumpkins, no Quantum Leap and definitely NO Tiny Andrew Collings (aside: not unless he can somehow sneak his way in). You'll have to listen to find out if Richard made his flight back from the island of Cornwall in time for the show (aside: he did), if the show won any awards (aside: it didn't), and if anything amusing has happened to Tetsell in the last five months (aside: it hasn't, though he does nearly fall asleep at one point in the show, due to the rigours of being a father to a young baby). Is Richard super famous in Liverpool? What is worse than finding five men's sperm in your jack o' lantern? And can a man ever truly be in love with a lift if they are speaking different languages? And what will happen if we say we're going to blow Robin Hood Airport sky high? We might have to wait to find out about that last one. Who cares anyway when Christian Reilly is on an impossible mission to sort out the Greek economy? It's brilliant (aside: it's not. It's shit).
