Anything having to do with money in your coaching business such as income and fees brings up old emotions: 1. Fear of succeeding and failing. 2. Insecurity about worth. 3. Family or cultural beliefs about money. 4. Fear of rejection. 5. And, mistaken assumptions about why people buy. I always encourage my clients to “do the math” rather than choose fees emotionally or based on erroneous ideas about what the market will bear. By becoming somewhat dispassionate and stepping into the practical, coaches can begin to understand how they can help themselves earn well. This episode is short and eye opening. Rhonda Hess helps new coaches leverage their zone of genius into a profitable coaching niche and launch with confidence. First off, let's address the elephant in the room. We've all seen those flashy ads and success stories claiming that hitting the 100k mark is a breeze. But is it really?Coaching, like any profession, requires dedication, skill, and a lot of hard work. While a tiny percentage of coaches might hit that 100k mark, those are often exceptions, not the rule.Don't get me wrong, I am ambitious and love a big goal and I would encourage you to set a big goal too.But I also want to share honest information so you don't beat yourself up about not achieving this financial goal which is supposedly a piece of cake. The 27th episode introduction [00:00:00] Introducing the podcast episode and discussing the challenges faced by coaches when entering the coaching arena. The myth of earning 100k per year [00:00:38] Exploring the misconception that earning 100k per year as a coach is easy and discussing the factors that contribute to financial success in the coaching industry. The impact of experience, credibility, marketing, and identity [00:10:16] Highlighting the importance of experience, credibility, effective marketing, and self-belief in achieving financial success as a coach. The challenge of wearing too many hats [00:12:29] Discusses the challenge of coaches taking on multiple roles and the importance of focusing on the right tasks to reach their income goals. The reality of the 500k coach [00:13:41] Explains that the income number associated with being a 500k coach may not reflect the actual profit due to expenses, and encourages coaches to be realistic and kind to themselves. The journey of reaching 100k [00:14:57] Emphasises that reaching the 100k mark as a coach is possible but requires dedication, time, and continuous learning, and encourages coaches to focus on their own growth and success rather than comparing themselves to others.Useful LinksSign up here: From Generic to Genius: how to choose a profitable niche and offer - Free LIVE workshop on 23 November at 10-11am GMT.Meet me live to prepare for a profitable 2024 in Barnes, London, on 30 November Download the 12 ways to get clients nowLearn about The Business of Coaching programmeConnect with Jo on LinkedInRate and Review the PodcastIf you found this episode of Women in the Coaching Arena helpful, please do rate and review it on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. If you're kind enough to leave a review, please do let Jo know so she can say thank you. Don't you just love having ready made questions you can ask your clients that are so powerful they will send your client into self reflection? Me too. Find the full transcript at prosperouscoach.com/176 .The right question can really help anyone zoom past obstacles and into a power zone of awareness and action on their own behalf. That's why questions are so valuable to coaches and in coaching session. So the first question that you can ask that of course really unlocks a lot for your clients:What do you want?Well, sometimes people have a hard time answering this question, but with probing questions beneath it, you might be able to get them to it. The second question is:What's holding you back?As human beings, we do generally have a sense of this. We might be in denial about it, but we generally do know what we're doing that's either sabotaging ourselves or what we're thinking, what we're feeling that is lingering too long for us to be able to transform. So what's holding you back? That question will cause your coaching client to go inside and really look at the truth with a capital T. The third question is:What is it costing you to continue holding back? I don't know if we normally as human beings think about what the costs are of our actions, of our thoughts, of our habits, but to ask someone that causes them to look at themselves from a place of self responsibility. The fourth question is:How could you show up differently? Presumably you're talking to them about a circumstance or a situation and this question allows them to wonder, Oh, I'm at choice here. How could I show up differently? I remember this one time where I was going to be speaking in public at a pretty big event for coaches and I was just so nervous. I called my husband for support and he has asked me: How do you want to show up, Rhonda?I paused and I thought about it. Well, I want to show up standing in my power, believing in myself and being open and vulnerable to my audience as well as delivering something that is actually valuable to them. Those four answers just grounded me. They made me feel good again, made me feel ready again. And I realized that it was okay to be vulnerable with my audience. It's okay that I was nervous and I didn't have to try to obliterate that nervousness before getting on stage. The fifth question is:What is a new perspective that you could adopt right now?Oftentimes when our coaching clients are telling us how they feel or what they think about something, it might be a gripe. It might be the raw feeling and there's nothing wrong with that.As a matter of fact, I invite my clients to share their raw feelings. You can respond to that raw stuff with the question: What's a new perspective you could adopt right now about that? You're inviting them to pick themselves up out of the situation and get a 30,000 foot view. Look at it from the other person's point of view. Or from their highest self point of view.To read the last 3 of 8 questions go here.
This episode is an eye opener. Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/175. I don't think there's a new coach anywhere who hasn't wondered … should I know more than my clients? Won't they expect that I have expertise to guide them? Otherwise, why would they pay me … right?I've heard coaches from all walks of life question their fitness to be a professional coach — whether the coach is younger or older, highly credentialed or not at all, has vast work experience or none. It's what I call a garden variety doubt. It comes with the territory of offering services in exchange for fees. Let's look into this powerful question a bit more because the answer is a paradox. And paradoxes are full of possibility. So, should you know more than your coaching clients? It completely depends on what you're offering – what you'll be doing with your coaching skills. And it's also a matter of semantics – what is knowing anyway? What Do You Want to Do with Your Coaching Skills? After coach training I was like a convert. I clung tightly to every aspect of the doctrine and guidelines. I read, listened and watched anything I could find about coaching. I attended all the local ICF chapter meetings and conferences. My coach training school taught me to create a Coaching Practice, not a business, so I had this vague vision of working with dozens of clients one on one in an office somewhere, much like a therapist does. I'd charge fees by the session. I'd hold professional distance.I was tempted to apply coaching skills to every conversation. I annoyed my friends and family because I felt that I knew THE secrets to communication. And I do think the tenets of coaching are best communication practices but I hadn't yet matured those skills with good timing and knowing when to stay silent.I was, in those early years, what I would now call a pure coach – a traditional coach the way that the ICF and my coach training school intended. But I was also a poor coach in the sense that I undercharged for years. I stayed in student mode and hoped for the best. I didn't consider the marketing required to attract clients or any other aspect of running a business and so bumbled around feeling I hadn't made it as a coach. You're probably much more savvy than I was because you know from the get go that you must build and run a financially strong business. How to do that is the next challenge and that's where my passion is now.I eventually realized there had to be a better way for me. Prosperous Coach Podcast is all about that better way.By the way, over time, every coach finds their style and their place — or they drop their coaching business and go get a job.I have become a non-traditional coach. I no longer feel that the pure coach model is for me. I still honor my coach training and use coaching skills but I've brought my full self into what I'm offering now, which includes expertise.About a certain set of things that I've studied deeply, I know more than most of my clients and it's why they hire me. But I want to make it clear, my clients and I collaborate. I guide and suggest while drawing their skills and wisdom out. It's a hybrid approach.Listen to Do You Fit One of These Coach Archetypes? Check out episode 73 at prosperouscoach.com/73 or on your favorite app. Here I'm going to focus on the 2 archetypes — the teacher and healer archetypes.Read more about how to develop a hybrid business using coaching skills plus teaching, mentoring, or healing skills.

You don't like this and neither will your audience. So, resist the temptation to sell to people who do not already know, like and trust you well. That causes unsubscribes.By the way, unsubscribes aren't all bad. Part of what's happening with unsubscribes is natural selection. Your IDEAL clients are staying and those who don't connect to your message are moving on.Building trust is the #1 reason to email your target audience. Your goal is to relate, inspire, entertain and educate. By the way, that's what you also do in a blog, podcast, videos and social posts. It's called generosity marketing and it works! If you inspire some sort of action you've succeeded. The long-term goal with email marketing is to inspire successive actions that bring your prospect closer to hiring you. Potential actions your reader might take include clicking through: · to download your lead magnet· to experience your content on your website — a blog, podcast or videoLater in an email series called a campaign you might also inspire them to sign up for an enrollment opportunity such as: · a Discovery Call· to register for free webinar or another eventBut those things aren't something you want to offer out of the blue in a one-off email. It takes a strategy. That's why it's called a campaign.Selling your services isn't at all like selling a gadget or makeup — the kinds of ads you see on social media. Coaching is a co-creative relationship and the service has a relatively high price point. Your prospects deserve a chance to talk to you or have a more personal connection before they enroll. But even then, never hard sell.Show That You Know Who You're EmailingYou can imagine that to relate, inspire, entertain and educate, first you have to understand your audience well. What makes them tick? What are the BIG problems you help them solve on the way to big goals they are struggling to achieve:Are YOU solving a big enough problem? That's a key to success. Check out episode 65 for help with that.If you haven't yet chosen a viable target audience to serve and discovered why they would seek out help and hire you, let's fix that. Jessica Katz is an Agile Coach and Trainer who is on a mission to help the community of Agile Coaches "...empower ourselves with better rates and more appropriate rates." When she became a freelance Agile Coach Jessica became aware of how difficult it was to understand how much an Agile Coach could expect to make as a full-time employee, how much they could charge as freelance, and how much those freelance coaches were paying themselves for the work they do. The first edition of The Agile Coaching Report came out last year and she recently finished collecting data for the second version. Since then she's been hard at work sorting through the details she has collected. During the interview, she shares some of the key learnings she has had in working with the data. This includes things like which segments of the coaching demographic get paid more, how do race and gender impact your pay, who is better at negotiating salary, and factors that can influence the amount you can earn as a coach. She also shares stories about how individuals have been able to use this data to successfully negotiate being paid at a rate equal to their peers within the organization. The audience for the report is anyone working in a coaching capacity within Agile Teams, on an Agile Transformation or Change Management project and it includes a variety of related information like how much people are getting paid for public speaking, as well as common attributes of those paid the most. If you are trying to figure out whether the amount you are earning is in step with the rest of the coaching field, if you need help figuring out how to negotiate for a higher rate of pay, or if you want to know if you are paying your coaches enough, this interview with Jessica Katz on her Agile Coaching Income Report has the details you are looking for. Rhonda Hess:Hey coaches, I have something really different and exciting today. I'm doing an interview today with the awesome Shannon Kaiser. I'll introduce her in just a minute, but let me tell you how this came about.I came across her website and on her website was an assessment to test what your intuition style is. And I could not resist taking it. Great questions on it, by the way. And as soon as I received the results, it told me that I was clairsentient. I had known that before, but I didn't know an assessment would be able to evaluate that about me. This was kind of fun. I want you to know a couple of the things that the results told me. It said that: I feel drained being in a large group of people.I have awesome instincts about people, places, and situations.I find it difficult to watch the news.I am super sensitive to my environment.I can't shop at thrift antique stores. All true. This last one made me laugh because I can't touch other people's stuff a lot, you know, unless I have a relationship with them. So these are all really interesting to me. Over the years in my coaching business, I have developed my intuition and I think it's really important for coaches to do this. So I invite you to go to Shannon's website for the assessment. And while you're there, look around at all the wonderful things that Shannon has on there.Let me tell you about her because you're going be amazed at this wonderful human being.Shannon, first, let me just say “hi”.Shannon Kaiser:Hi. It's so great to be here with you. And I'm so glad you got to, uh, dive into that assessment and it related. That's pretty amazing.Rhonda Hess:I'm pretty amazed that you could write something that was so effectively nailing my style of intuition. Congratulations!Shannon Kaiser:That's part using my intuition to create it. We'll talk about that.Rhonda Hess:Shannon is a world renowned, spiritual and self love teacher, speaker and empowerment coach. She is the bestselling author of 5 books on psychology of happiness and fulfillment — I laugh because I can't even imagine writing one — including The Self-Love Experiment, Adventure for Your Soul, and Joy Seeker. She guides people to awaken and align to their true selves so that they can live their highest potential. She's been named among the top hundred women to watch in wellness by mindbodygreen. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her rescue dog, Chance. Anything else you want to tell us about what brought you to being an empowerment coach, speaking globally and writing all these books?Shannon Kaiser:It's great to be here with you. Thank you. I truly feel we have these pivotal moments in our life and I haven't always done this work. In fact, in 2009 I was in a whole different career climbing the corporate ladder, working in advertising, working with celebrities, being an Art Director and Graphic Designer. It looked like I had it all. I was dating a man who wanted to marry me and it was just wonderful checking all those boxes off of what they society says you should want. But I would cry myself to sleep at night. This episode is about anxiety that some coaches feel caused by one specific action they take repeatedly. It can keep you from moving forward in your coaching business and enjoying the journey. Find the full transcript at prosperouscoach.com/172.I once worked with a coach who kept backsliding between sessions. We'd have a dynamic conversation in session. Their passion would pour forth. Certainty would click into place and I'd set them onto a task to take their decision into action.A day or two later all the certainty had dissolved and in its place was paralyzing overwhelm and doubt. We'd meet again and the passion would come back full force. They would leave the session feeling sure of their direction and ready to take action. But then a few days later slide back into a deep internal struggle.I have great compassion for all new coaches. These highly intelligent and personally powerful human beings can really going through it!I've been there and specifically at that tender time of just beginning to build my coaching business. I remember the lost feeling. The belief that I didn't have what it takes. In both my case and I believe this coach's case as well, we were getting in our own way. It's not unusual to get stuck repeatedly when you're doing many things for the first time and taking a big risk to build a business. There was one thing this coach was doing repeatedly that stole away their fire and sense of purpose … Googling other coaches websites and social channels in their coaching niche. You've done that, right? You wonder if it will give you a clue and maybe it will affirm your direction. But it does just the opposite. The comparison monster rears it's ugly head and fills you with doubts. Am I good enough? Can I do this? Those other coaches have so much more going for themselves!I don't have enough credentials.Maybe I should give up!Shame rises up along with fears that spiral into a big story you tell yourself. What can you do? Three things …1. Invite the Emotional Part to Have a RestSometimes drama is high and gets more accentuated over time when you're not in action. These feelings don't necessarily mean anything about your future. But they feel all consuming in the moment.A while ago I did some Internal Family Systems parts work to help me through a difficult time. I highly recommend the workbook called Parts Work: An Illustrated Guide to Your Inner Life by Tom & Laurie Holmes. It's something you can read and get value from on your own or work on it with a therapist who know the concept. With guidance, a bit of self-awareness and spontaneous action with a crayon I was able to quickly draw the most prominent characters of my inner family. These are the parts that drive me through my days with similar triggers and results. Now, I notice these characters at work inside me. I can see what's going on with them when I feel fear, shame, grief or anger. And, if I give myself a bit of time I can respond with compassion and engage my higher self to both care for those other parts and soothe them.Read the full transcript and learn about 2 other ways to snap yourself out of overwhelm.
This episode is inspired by children who are born with a sense of wonder for the world and all the beings in it. Find the full transcript at prosperouscoach.com/171.Recently, I asked the members of my Facebook Group called Prosperous Coach Club what topics they would like a podcast episode about. One person said: “How to be curious. Is it something that can be learned and trained and if yes, how?”What a wonderful question! Thanks for asking for that O.G. This is for you. And, by the way, if there's a topic that YOU want me to coach about, let me know through my website.First, I want to say that curiosity is an innate skill. It's a survival strategy as well as a way to be delighted by the world. It's a love of learning. And as we get older, we tend to close off curiosity because we're encouraged to KNOW.Have you ever watched a person you admire admit they don't know something? How did it make you feel? For me, there's this sense of wisdom that the person knows what they don't know and are willing to admit it.Curiosity is a muscle that goes slack if you don't use it for a while but it doesn't take long to grow strength there again. Like so much, it's a matter of raising awareness until it becomes habitual. Coaching clients is a great way to build that muscle.Being Curious is Good for CoachesWhen a client comes to a session with their agenda, what's the best way to serve them? · Should you imagine the conversation before hand and plan your approach?· Should you take on their emotions and problems as your own?· Should you step into performance mode and be the one with the answers? When I say it like that, it's obviously a ‘no', right? But when you're new to being a coach what are you feeling before a session? Performance anxiety. You feel you should know … everything. It's understandable and it's counter to what's really needed for an effective session. Shifting from performance mode into curiosity relieves the pressure. It opens the field to sensations — your own and your clients — and intuition kicks in.Masterful coaches aim to stay present, open minded and curious. In fact, if you're in a curious state you are simultaneously present, in the present moment and open-minded. How beautiful is that? Curiosity is an indication of genius. It awakens the observer self. The mind stays active instead of passive. It takes a flexible mind to come back again and again to curiosity. Yet, isn't it interesting that children are the most curious among us? What does that tell you about the urgent need to know all?Being Curious is Good for Coaching ClientsIt's taken me a long time to learn to be curious in coaching session. Sure, I learned that open-ended questions are the best tool for coaches next to listening. But I didn't stop to think … what comes before the powerful questions inside of me?I've since learned that the beginning of excellent coaching starts with knowing what is motivating me and making a quick adjustment in the moment if necessary.Go here for more of the transcript about why your curiosity is good for your clients.
This episode is inspired by all my VIP clients, who are far more intelligent and gifted than they give themselves credit for. You too are gifted and intelligent. Believe it! Find the full transcript at prosperouscoach.com/170.Being the CEO of your own coaching business is a great way to uncover and set loose your creativity. I'm not talking about poetry writing, painting and sculpting here. I'm talking about the vast reserves of your innate ability to create something from nothing. Out of thin air. When I started as a coach I had no idea I would create so much. I figured that everyone else's ideas were better than mine and that I would read books and apply those ideas to my coaching. Know what I mean?Create From What's Inside of YouWell, sure, I did some of that. But I will tell you … I feel much more engaged in my business when I create from my own ideas. I've created my own models for processes, my own terms and a lot more. I've shared those with you. Coaches tell me that they understand complex things that they didn't before because of those unique models and words. You can do this and more too. I'm here to tell you it's both challenging and meaningful. All things that are meaningful have a large dose of challenge in them.In 2001, I was 3 years into my coaching business and was the Treasurer for the Denver chapter of the International Coach Federation. The president of the board was Will Craig. Will has creativity coming out of his pores … all day long. I've never met a person who is more the director of their own life. He is unstoppable. If Will wants something he will make it happen! Creating a business for him was child's play. And this is the potential for you. Your coaching business could feel like play. Can you imagine that? It's a mindset.Rise to the Occasion of Your Coaching BusinessI was blessed in more ways than I can count when Will asked me to be a trainer for his new coach training company. That was the start of something hugely satisfying and profitable for me that has affected my whole coaching career. It became a point of credibility and a prosperous network for me. It grew my confidence. They say if you teach a thing you become the master of that thing. One year later, Will asked me to co-author new curriculum for his coach training school. His belief in me was stunning! I didn't know how to write curriculum! But I rose to the occasion. It's time for you to do that if you haven't already … rise to the occasion of your coaching business. Rise to each of the occasions that show up in that territory. Will gave me some guidelines and encouraged me to think like a beginner. Over the next few months I dug deep inside myself to write something I'd only 3 years ago learned to do — coach!I knew I had to create something original — to figure out my unique perspective and come up with a fresh coaching model. It was a birthing process.I'm amazed my marriage survived this time. But you know what? My husband, Seth, helped me greatly by interviewing me about each chapter's topics. That would get me writing.By the way, that's a writing tip. If you're having trouble getting your words onto the page, record yourself talking about the topic or have someone interview you about your topic and jot down your words. It primes the pump.Read more about unleashing your genius here.

Find the full transcript at prosperouscoach.com/169.New coaches often ask me what does it really take to be good at this ... to earn a good living at coaching by running your own business? Great question!Welcome to Your Coaching Business JourneyYou want to make a good living at this, help people, and be the director of your own career and lifestyle. Your coaching business can bring you all of those things and more. After 20+ years growing my own coaching business I've realized that it's been the territory of my greatest personal transformation. It's been a spiritual journey because I've raised the courage to stay in it and ride all the waves. I've evolved and have more to do there. So here's my invitation to you … if you're going to build your own coaching business — go for it without limits. Stay the course. Keep the faith. Believe in yourself even and especially through the down times when you're not meeting your goals or feeling stuck.Let's explore what it really takes from two angles:First, mindset shifts you'll need to make. And two, actions you'll need to take.As you listen think in terms of your potential rather than what you have to have achieved already. Wherever you are on this journey, you're in the right place to move forward. Forward is always the best direction.Let's start with the most crucial mindset …Mindset #1 - Embrace Being a Beginner in Your Coaching BusinessLearn to be okay with not knowing everything and with being bad at some things until you get better at them.Explorers and scientists get the value of this mindset. They know that first you summon courage and that most mistakes made along the way are happy accidents.I've never liked the phrase "fake it ‘til you make it" because you can be totally authentic while you're learning things. Be transparent. You can tell your clients you're new at this. You can flub up and just bounce back. You can apologize for mistakes and learn from them.No one will mind. In fact we're living in times where vulnerability is appreciated. Don't perform. Connect. Don't judge yourself. Allow yourself to grow.Mindset #2 - Let Your Coaching Business Be Your TeacherYour clients will teach you how to be a better coach. Your marketing mistakes will teach you how to be a better marketer. Your peers will teach you how to be a better leader. What circumstances or events feel like they repeatedly take YOU down a peg? Those are your Core Lessons in life. Make it part of your purpose to master those things. For example, I seem to need to continually learn how to stand in my power and how to hold healthy boundaries. I've come a long way with this. My business has been my greatest teacher. And, your client's Core Lessons may very well be the challenges that also trip you up. Interesting, right? It's all a big mirror.Read about the 3rd and 4th mindsets and the 3 actions here.
I bet you think I'm going to talk about apps for tracking your clients here. No! You don't need that. I'm talking about reasonably priced apps that help you run your business rather than give you more tasks to do.Every couple of years I announce my favorite apps. But, you know what? My favorites don't change much because these are the best I've found. Find the show notes at prosperouscoach.com/168.I keep my systems and processes for my business ultra simple and think you should too. That means using some old fashioned methods like Excel spreadsheets instead of Trello and emailboxes for clients and more spreadsheets to keep track of clients. Why? Because they work, are free and don't add a lot of labor. When I do spend money on my business I'm strategic about it. Check out episode 111 called Smart and Not So Smart Coaching Business Expenses. If you are just starting out as a coach you're probably tempted by dozens of apps and systems that target coaches. Many are expensive in the long run and may not seem like it if it's $10 – 20 month. It adds up. That means less profit for you. You want to guard your profit! Be strategic in all choices for your business. Some of these apps I'm about to share with you have a free version, which is all you need. Some are paid monthly, some are paid yearly. I pay yearly whenever I can because it's easier to budget and usually a savings.Let's start with a free service:CanvaWhat a great app! I remember trying to create graphics in Photoshop. Forget-about-it! The free version helps you create great looking: · social media memes and banners · lead magnets· brochures· postcards· letterheads· info graphicsAmong other things, I use it to create my podcast episode art. I have templates for the different sizes needed for different social channels stored in Canva that I just copy, replace the title of my episode and the image. In a few minutes I'm done. Yes, you can get the paid version but it's an unnecessary cost. Rather than use the images offered in Canva, I upload my own which cost 1/10th of the monthly price of Canva Pro. I get my images from Deposit Photos.Deposit PhotoI recommend that all coaches have a content strategy such as a blog, YouTube videos or a podcast (my personal favorite). You put out valuable bite-sized content like clockwork each week that is highly relevant to your target audience. It's called generosity marketing. Not sure how to do that yet? Listen to Episode 75 about how to produce content that gets engagement.Your weekly content should also relate to your Signature Program as much as possible so you pre-sell ideal coaching clients on that program in a subtle non-salesy way. This episode shares steps you should take BEFORE you create your coaching website. I'm talking before you pay a designer, before you decide to buy a Wix or Squarespace template and do it yourself ...or before you ask your well-meaning friend who has a bit of skill to do it for you.Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/165. I am not a web designer. But as an international business mentor for coaches with 20+ years experience in solopreneur business development, I know how websites work for coaches if done right and what doesn't work to attract paying clients.I'm the TEACHER Archetype. If you don't yet know your archetype, listen to Episode 12.I tend to learn from my mistakes by studying solutions then creating step-by-step guides for others. It's the way I roll. So, after I launched a couple of dud coaching website when I started as a coach a couple of decades ago, I decided to study to understand what makes a coaching website client-winning. Learn more about that at prosperouscoach.com/42.One thing became crystal clear in my study. Most coaches put up a website too fast and end up having to do them again.I'm lucky that coaches— my target audience — find my website either because they've found my podcast, were referred by another coach or coach training organization, or they've Googled "coaching niche."It's satisfying to realize that I have done a good job driving traffic to my website because a steady stream of coaches who already know they want to hire me are showing up there. That's what I want for you too.On my website the coaches fill out the application on my Work with Rhonda. That's called a conversion process.Does your website have a conversion process that inspires your audience to have a Discovery Call with you?In that application, most coaches share that they are feeling lost without a clear coaching niche or target audience. But then they say they are working on their website, creating ads, social posts and coaching programs. And I think ... bummer, because the coach has done things out of order and if they want to be successful they will be starting from scratch not very far down the road from now. It's an honest mistake. When you finish coach training there's this emotional rush to get a website up, to start doing all the conventional things most coaches think are the way to attract coaching clients fast. Here's the truth, if you create your website before you know who you're serving and the problem you help them solve its like building a house on land you don't own or buying a car before you can see over the steering wheel.Developmentally, it's better to wait to create your website until your business model has a solid foundation.I made this mistake myself. In my first year as a coach I threw away a lot of money and effort creating a pretty website with a lot of philosophical copy about the power of coaching. I worked so hard on it. But it sat there collecting cyber dust.Your website can be command central for your coaching business. If it's created correctly it will definitely help you earn well and serve more clients. But an online brochure about coaching will not create those results.3 Critical Decisions Before You Start Your Coaching WebsiteRead about the 3 things to do BEFORE your create your coaching website here.
This episode is about how to be authentic in your coaching business and share your personal story to attract ideal clients. Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/164Vulnerability Wasn't Always PrizedWhen I launched Prosperous Coach, sharing your mistakes or shortcomings was not a great strategy. Unless you were famous already, sharing that you went bankrupt, ruined your marriage or lost your business wasn't received as a reason to listen to what you have to say. Marketing and selling had a different style and come from.Facebook had only been around for two years. And few people were sharing selfies. If you were looking for help to achieve something you were looking for an expert who had significant credentials and social proof in the old fashioned way.And if you wanted to attract clients you needed to toot your own horn without much airtime, if any, on the zigzag it took you to get to where you are. Trust was built by showing people how you have everything figured out.So coaches and anyone selling a personal or business growth program were a bit more buttoned up. You pushed your knowledge and successes out ahead of you keeping more personal things to yourself.I'm not exactly sure when things changed. I'm guessing it was around 2010 — but I know that it was revolutionary when it became okay to be vulnerable with prospects and clients.More than that … vulnerability is now appreciated and even perhaps expected in many spaces. Thank you, Brene Brown!I was a late adopter of that in my business and it contributed to a slow down for a few years. I found it more difficult to drop the shield and even had some judgment about the messiness of other coaches and other people marketing approaches in a really loose and personal way. More Authentic Marketing for CoachesNow, I'm a total convert and can easily say that it's a relief to just be me all the time. Not omit or hide anything. And I often have coaches tell me how much they appreciate my authenticity … how much they appreciate that I keep it real! Most of my clients worry that their faux pas or so called failures in life are not going to be well received.I was talking to one of my VIP clients the other day and she was concerned about whether her personal story would turn her clients off. But she had chosen a target audience and niche that's related to those difficult times in her past. I could clearly see that sharing her story would build trust with her audience.Trust … that's what creates followers and enrolls ideal clients. Think about it … if someone cannot see you as trustworthy, they certainly cannot hire you. You've heard of the know-like-trust factor. Bob Burg wrote a book called Endless Referrals and coined that term. But it's an OLD concept. Yes, you can get referrals if people trust you. But that's not the only benefit of trust.6 Powerful Questions Coaches Can AskWhen I'm helping my clients choose a target audience and develop their coaching niche, I ask questions to uncover their skills, experience and expertise, their interests and personal story. Click here to read the 6 powerful questions to uncover your personal story and how it might relate to your strategic coaching niche.
This episode is about thinking through how you'll earn as a coach based on how many clients you can feasibly serve at a time. It requires a bit of math and strategic thinking. And, it will be eye opening! Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/163.Are You Charging for Coaching by the Session? Most often, when I meet new coaches in a Discovery Call or Strategy Session where I help them with a bite-sized topic such as determining their audience and niche — if they have paying clients at all, they are charging by the session.Speaking in terms of US dollars, they've set their prices anywhere from $25 to $150 per session. Some may be packaging sessions of say … 3 sessions for $450.At the top of that range, coaches tell me they feel uncomfortable. $150 per hour sounds exorbitant! I mean aren't those getting close to lawyer rates? Would anyone or should anyone pay more than that for coaching? So I get it. These are the same concerns I had as a new coach. Part of the issue here is perspective. The standard behind that approach is pricing in dollars per hour. That way of thinking will not help you earn well as a coach.I've switched up my perspective on pricing and invite you to do the same. First, what's making you think about pricing with that old standard?Well to start you may be used to earning an hourly wage or salary. You might also be used to receiving benefits like health insurance, paid vacation and sick days as part of your employment package.Once those things are deducted from your pay and you divide the amount of your net paycheck by the hours you work, being paid $25 to $50 per hour seems decent, right?A small percentage of employees in the world earn $150 per hour or more so it seems crazy to believe you can as a coach, right? Why Charging By the Session Keeps Coaches Struggling FinanciallyBut wait … the key word is ‘employee'. When you're working for yourself, you pay for your own health insurance. There are no paid vacations and sick days. At least not in the way you're used to thinking. And, you may not realize that you also will invest money regularly into your own business infrastructure beyond the initial costs of coach training. Add to that the hours and expenses of marketing. You're paying your own social security (an amount deducted from US paycheck). As part of my VIP program I help coaches create that infrastructure and set up systems. It involves paying for a few accounts. Those yearly or monthly fees add up. Health insurance and business expenses need to be taken into consideration when pricing your program. After all you need to earn well as a coach. You may have a full time job now that you want to transition out of soon. Or you may have been laid off or quit which lead you to building your coaching business. In any case, it's important that you think differently about your time, your expenses and earnings. When I started my coaching business I imagined I would work with a lot of people every year. I also thought that everyone wants to hire a coach. I figured it was just a matter of a great looking website and maybe a little public speaking and I'd soon have a flow of eager clients. Can you relate?Click here to read about a more savvy way to price your coaching program.

Unhelpful beliefs about worth and earning and money are deeply rooted into our cultures and ancestry. So it's not surprising that we all struggle with money mindset.· Most of us have worthiness issues and that feels like imposter syndrome.· Some people don't think they should charge for coaching because it's a helping service.· And for some, money is distasteful — a dirty thing. No doubt many dirty things have been done in the pursuit of money since humans started walking Earth. But money itself is just a tool. That's an important shift right there. This episode is for new coaches who are shifting into full time coaching from a full time job. That transition is a big leap mentally and emotionally. Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/161. Building a business and then sustaining it is an amazing personal journey. More and more people are deciding to be their own boss because they want to have more lifestyle freedom and to be at the cause of their own circumstances. But if you are taking the leap from employment into entrepreneurship it's no small thing. There are big shifts that require mindset mastery as you transition.· You go from being directed by a boss to supervising yourself in every way.· You go from a defined infrastructure and role to creating your own systems and functions from scratch.· You go from working collaboratively to working alone, at least at first.· You had a regular paycheck, which will become an irregular income you have to generate on your own.· Someone else administered your payroll, taxes and benefits and now you'll manage that yourself.· And, you leave behind an established organizational culture and your own reputation and now you're going to have to create a new one. It's an identity crisis. The truth is that your identity is more innate than you think. Plus, all of your core values, talents and skills come with you into your business. I would even argue that you get to be more of yourself and bring more of yourself to your business. Look you're a multifaceted being. Starting your coaching business is a chance at a makeover where you get to be a better you. And that is enormously satisfying, and I think totally worth the adventure.Leverage Your Background Into Your Coaching Niche Last year, one of my VIP clients was shifting from a career of nearly two decades, all in one industry, into her own coaching business. Her previous position had status, significant responsibilities and a salary to match. And, understandably, she was terrified about shifting to full time self employment as a coach.Fortunately for her she decided to leverage her work experience by choosing a related audience and niche. And this is something I highly recommend to coaches when they can.She had instant credibility with her audience because she had been where they are now. And, it was easy to put together relevant messaging and offers because she knew the context her audience lives in. So, leveraging your background into your target audience and coaching niche will somewhat reduce the stress of the transition because there's common ground into the thing you're going to be doing. But when you're a free agent you'll need to think a bit differently. Now, I come from a family of entrepreneurs.Go here to read 7 ways to make your transition to full time coaching easier.

Let me explain. My Early Coaching Business Was An AlbatrossWhen I was new to my own coaching business I treated myself like I didn't deserve to be in business, like I didn't deserve to earn well and have the life I want. Here's what I did instead:1. I over-complicated my business model by offering way too many options to prospective clients. 2. I undervalued myself and charged way too little to sustain my business. 3. I over-delivered in every single way. 4. I was too accommodating with my schedule.5. I allowed late payments.6. Ultimately, I didn't think through what I wanted and plot a strategic course to get there.Bottom line … I was operating unconsciously in my coaching business. I was driven by a mindset that doesn't go well with being the CEO of a business. Big mistake.A few years in, I realized that I had created a monster — a business that was complex, running me ragged and paying me poorly. Its part of the reason why I now teach coaches to create a Simple Coaching Business Model and to strategically grow their business from the get go.The Big Mindset Shift and 7 Actions to Charge Coaching Clients More and Get ItSo here's the secret I want you to come away with from this episode … ACT AS IFAct as if you are already in high demand. There are 7 ways I can think of that will help you do this:1. This episode is meant to help you earn more by strategically determining your coaching niche and all that goes with it. Find the show notes at prosperouscoach.com/158.When coaches ask me in a Strategy Session: "Is this a good coaching niche?" What they really want to know but don't know to ask is:Will focusing my energy this way repay me with a consistent flow of clients who are willing to invest? That's the 6-figure question.A strategically determined coaching niche is the linchpin for your financial success. Without that direction and focus your messages and offers will be vague and won't capture attention. Which means you won't have that consistent flow of paying clients.A profitable coaching niche helps you to:Quickly become a coach in high demand through momentum.Leverage your efforts and contextualize your messages and offers, instead of being all over the place.Command higher fees.Test the financial viability of your current coaching niche with these 5 powerful questions:POWERFUL QUESTION #1: Does Your Coaching Service One Specific and Viable Audience? If not, consider narrowing your audience to a specific group before you go much further in your biz.A target audience is a specific audience that's small enough to help you stand out in the crowd. It is not a coaching track or a coaching topic. So, for instance, your target audience isn't relationship coaching. That's a track, a general topic. Your target audience isn't even a specific topic, such as dating. An audience is a group of PEOPLE with unique goals and big problems in the way of that.Since coaching is all about people, shouldn't your marketing and services be tailor made to one group? You cannot tailor make something that's for everyone or even for a big amorphous group. Don't try that. The narrow audience I used in episode 140 called What is Missing In Your Coaching Niche was single parents who want to date successfully. Single parents have specific dating problems and specific dating goals that a relationship coach could specialize in.Go for a group that's that narrow and you'll magnify profitability. That may seem contrary to you. But take the advice of every marketing guru I've ever known – target a specific narrow audience. Your life will be easier.POWERFUL QUESTION #2: What is the BIG OUTCOME your narrow audience wants?People want. And when they want they are driven to get.I know it sounds basic, maybe even base, and it kind of is. For people that have their basic needs regularly met, the drive to get what they WANT is even stronger than the drive to get what they need.Episode 99 was about this. It's called What Coaching Clients Want Vs. What You Think They Need,.I remember being oriented around people's needs after coach training. I tried to market to needs. But then I realized that focusing on needs wasn't going to result in clients who invest well over the long term.In other words, I couldn't make a decent income focusing my coaching on needs. It is said … “offer what they want and then help them get what they need.”If you don't know specifically what your audience wants that lack of understanding will keep you from having a profitable coaching business.Read about the remaining 3 powerful questions to fully test your coaching niche here.

And I also know the high potential ahead of you if you stay the course. So I want you to know that I realize that it's easy for me to say what I'm going to say. You are in the thick of things and I'm observing it.But because I'm an empath – I feel what people around me feel in an energetic way. It can be a gift and it can be ... painful to watch the mindsets that trip coaches up. They tripped me up too.You know the power of mindset in working with your clients. What a person believes can make or break their opportunities. These 3 mindsets could kill your coaching business because until they are shifted in your mind, they will run you ragged. The High Pressure MindsetI mistakenly answered an unscheduled call the other day. It was a coach who wanted my help RIGHT NOW! She didn't take it in when I explained that I was booked 8 weeks out. Later in the day, she sent not one but 4 emails loaded with exclamations points and extreme urgency wanting me to accommodate her.The pressure was palpable. I started to feel as breathless as she was. I knew she wasn't an ideal client for me because I don't respond well to the energy of push, push, push.Coaching and entrepreneurship often attracts high achievers – people who make much of life and business look easy. But under the surface they are boiling with anxiety and the need to do everything well right NOW!To these dear people — the idea of patience feels like prison and following a process step by step is torture.Faster, faster, faster is their motto and work style. There's a desperation attached to it.Do you recognize yourself in this sub-group? If so you're in good company. Your coaching business is an excellent territory to shift this mindset for a more peaceful and yet still successful life.If you're in a big hurry to make things happen. STOP! You are not a chicken so turn off the pressure cooker! The pressure you put yourself under creates the exact opposite thing you desire. Energetically, it's like you're walking around throwing hot acid all over the place. Prospects will perceive the push and steer clear not knowing why but certain they don't want to be a part of it.Try this mantra … Mindful action, step by step, builds prosperity. The Plan B MindsetA coach recently asked me … “How soon will I know this coaching business isn't working and it's time to go for plan B?”Whoa! That was a loaded question underpinned by a sense of doom. That's scarcity thinking, ya'll. Big time.To read more about two of these killing mindsets and learn the mantras to break yourself out of them go here.

This episode is inspired by a rarely used skill that we all have and that can greatly help you attract more coaching clients that you'll love. Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/154.I recommend you also listen to a previous episode called Can You Manifest Coaching Business Success with Your Mind? Find that at prosperouscoach.com/106, that's episode 106 in your favorite podcast app. It talks about different aspects of manifesting. This episode won't be repetitive as it's about one particular part of manifesting, which is attracting ideal clients. Back in 2001 when I was writing curriculum for Coach Training Alliance I came up with the term ideal client. I doubt it was a wholly original idea but it was an aha in my mind.Coaches want to have a financially successful business. I love the idea of prosperity thinking and wanted to include elements of that in the curriculum. But I've also used this idea in my own coaching business.Every coach will have preferences about the best clients for them and every client will have preferences about the person that helps them transform. In an ideal world there would be that excellent fit more often than not.Fit is critical for excellent coaching to happen. And, fit is critical for you to earn well as a coach. Look, if you're attracting non-ideal clients a lot you're not going to be happy and neither are your clients. If your clients aren't happy, you have referrals and testimonials. If you're not happy, you'll feel drained and burned out. There's an art to attracting clients. I call it an art because it takes time to learn who is ideal for you and it takes conscious attraction practices to draw them to you.One powerful part of attraction is the words you use on your website, your social posts, your freebie, your content such as blogs, podcast episode and also the words you use to describe your Signature Program. If you're blessed as I am, you'll have that word fit reflected back to you. Here's a review I received for Prosperous Coach Podcast to illustrate what I mean:I absolutely love how open, sincere and generous Rhonda is with her time-tested wisdom in what it takes to build a successful coaching business from scratch. As a newbie coach still enrolled in a certification program, my mind-wheels are constantly spinning about how to build my new business. Rhonda's value-filled words and energy help ground and ignite me at the same time. She takes me out of the fog and into clarity, out of stumbling into jogging steadily forward.Wow! Thank you for that amazing review, Lena. How did I help ground and ignite something inside Lena — someone I didn't know before? How did I help her come out of the fog and into clarity? Two main ways:1. By studying what words would land best with my ideal client within my chosen target audience.2. By thinking of my ideal client while I create messaging to attract clients. What Are the Right Words to Attract Your Ideal Coaching Client? That's a discovery process that takes place BEFORE you do anything to attract clients. Before you build your website, before you put out content and social posts, before you design your Signature Program ...To read the full transcript and see the 24 Powerful Questions to Identify Your Ideal Coaching Clients go here.
This episode is inspired by all of my wonderful clients … coaches who are so smart. They have so many skills and advantages. And … they still have to attract a steady stream of clients and that can feel hard. Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/153.I remember a couple of years into starting my coaching business having a regular walk with another relatively new coach friend of mine. We often commiserated about how most of our clients only stuck around for 3 months of coaching. That meant we were in a constant state of chasing clients. We felt truly clueless about how to find more clients. All the low hanging fruit had been picked — you know, the colleagues, friends, and friends of friends — people we already knew.I'd had a sample coaching session with them all and few invested in a package. Those who did seemed to be constantly questioning whether they wanted to continue the investment. They said they valued our conversations. But they just didn't get the long-term value. My coach friend and I kept exclaiming with frustration … where are the clients who get coaching enough to invest in it?That's the same question I hear new coaches ask two decades later. The problem is, it's the wrong question. So there are layers to this problem of constantly chasing clients and I want to tease them apart for you.1. It's what you're selling.2. It's how you're selling.3. It's how you think about what you're selling.Chances are, if you don't have a steady stream of clients finding you, then at least one but possibly all 3 of these need a permanent adjustment. And you'll be so glad you did. Coach, You're Selling the Wrong ThingLong since that agonized time of trying to find clients, things are very different for me. My ideal clients find me! And I don't sell coaching anymore. “Finding clients who get coaching enough to invest in it” isn't something I bother with anymore. Why? Because with a shock, way back when, I realized that there just aren't many people out there who understand the value of coaching. So trying to convince people to buy it is … well, misguided. That's why I recommend designing a Signature Program for your audience based on what you learn from them in market research. Will you coach your clients in that program? Yes. But you won't sell coaching anymore.Have you ever been on Facebook or Instagram and seen a gadget for sale and you think — I want one of those! Well, some smart person figured out a gap in the marketplace and filled it with that gadget. They knew it would be wanted.Selling products is very different from selling services but what's similar the way a human being responds when something unexpected solves a problem for them or something they want lands in front of them.Coaching just isn't that thing very often. It's so much easier to sell something to people that they KNOW they want! For the 3 ways to stop chasing coaching clients and have them find YOU instead, go here.
Recently, a client asked me to share the biggest lesson I've learned in my 20 years of running my coaching business. Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/152I have a feeling you're going to be surprised by my answer … the best lesson boils down to less is more.It took me a long time to learn this lesson. Now that I have integrated it fully into my business and coaching mindset and habits I see the real power of this lesson. It applies to so much, not only in business but other aspects of life. And I'm so grateful to the experienced coaches and business owners who shared this wisdom with me long ago. So coaches often struggle to reach simplicity in their business in a number of ways. Of course, the first way is about who they serve. You hear me say this often enough so I'll just reinforce this quickly. Choose one viable target audience and develop one specific niche for that audience. Less is more. You'll market less and earn more. And now, I want to share 4 more ways that less is more in your coaching business. Take the time to review these areas in your business to see how you can recalibrate to doing less and saying less.Consider putting a sign up in your office that says LESS IS MORE to remind you about this.Put Less on Your Coaching WebsiteIt's so tempting to use your website as a clearing house for too many satellite concepts, favorite quotes, recommendations. Getting carried away like this can mean failure because you don't show your prospects the real path to you.So keep it simple. Provide the essentials. Inspire reading, exploring and invite only a strategic few calls to action. If you try to cover every possibility, cram in all the things you want to say, the message that could spark them will be lost.Adding more tabs is not a good idea, drop down menus under tab — don't ever do that! Too many words, too many paragraphs, too many buttons and distractions everywhere, that means your website will be a dud.See distraction creates a confused mind. And a confused mind never buys.In this overfull life, every potential coaching client wants a calm, logical experience. You want to inspire them to read more by having less copy. Rather than pushing and prodding them towards action, let them have their own pace.Every web visitor views a site differently. Your job is to help them see themselves in what you say so they want to explore. There's one exception to less is more on a website. If you post a regular blog or podcast there's no need to limit those posts but you can limit the length to a 5 – 7 minute experience per post. Which brings me to …Write Less and Say MoreOne of the things I passionately teach my VIP clients is how to write in a punchy way. Punchy in copywriting speak means streamlined, powerful and compelling all at the same time.Long highly descriptive sentences and paragraphs won't get read. Go for a skimmable experience. People will read short sentences, short paragraphs and less total copy. When you finish writing an article or blog post, go through every sentence and streamline it. Take out most adjectives and reduce prepositional phrases. Also shorten paragraphs by breaking one up into two or more.Because people read on their phones ...To read 3 more ways less is more for your coaching business and 3 powerful questions to ask yourself now go here.
This episode is about allowing yourself to fully evolve into your coaching business. The full transcript can be found at prosperouscoach.com/151.Take a journey back in time with me and imagine …Who were you and what was your life like before the idea of becoming a coach inspired you and made you leap?Maybe you had a job and a comfortable routine. Maybe you were used to your paycheck and working certain hours. Your family knew what to expect of your time and attention. You knew what to expect of yourself and your day-to-day life. And that was part of the problem — part of the growing discontent that causes all people to seek.Maybe your colleagues were a daily respite from the mundanity of work or maybe you felt drained by all of it.A dream began to form. It was just a little spark.Something awakened in you and made you think. Maybe you could break away and breakthrough to a life where you could be your own boss and do more meaningful work. One where you had more flexibility in your lifestyle and you could serve your own vision. When you first heard about coaching something in you thrummed with new life. You took coach training and your excitement built along with a healthy dose of doubt. Learning how to coach transformed you — the way you think, the way you communicate. It was no less than revolutionary for you. And, it wasn't all easy because it broke you out of your mold. You saw yourself differently. You saw your relationship to others differently. And coaching gave you hope. It gave form to something you've longed for and did not know existed. Then the moment came when you needed to start making decisions about your business.Imposter syndrome rose up. Some days you could just brush it away. And some days it hung over you like a dark cloud.Yet every time you coached, even if it was for free or for way too little, you still loved it and so you moved forward bravely. You were asked to choose a niche, to work on messaging. Things that required you to put a stake in the ground. Gulp! “What's the right niche for me? Do I have to pick just one?”All these things were not what inspired you to become a coach. Some resentment for all this hard stuff kicked in. But you moved forward bravely despite thoughts like:“Can I really do this?”“Will anyone really pay for this?”“Won't marketing mean I have to sell out?”You realized that learning coaching was the vocational side of things. There's another more serious side to this called being a business owner. All the realities started to materialize as territory you've never been to.“I have to attract clients, charge fees that will replace my old paycheck, navigate the mine field of social media and summit all sorts of learning curves.”Seemingly. Endless. Learning curves. For some this is the point of departure. For some it's a dare to keep going, keep building and manifesting the new life. Now let's pause for a moment in the present …To read the full transcript and learn more about building your coaching business with Rhonda's help go here.
This episode is about a mindset shift that could free up mental blocks you might have about choosing or sticking with a specific niche. Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/150The two concerns I hear most from coaches about choosing a narrow audience and developing a unique niche to serve them are:1. “But I don't want to exclude anyone.”2. "But if I limit myself to a particular track — such as career coaching, business coaching or relationship coaching — I won't get to do life coaching."I'll talk in another podcast soon about the exclusion worry. Let's tackle this life coaching concern.Coaching is CoachingFirst, repeat after me … coaching is coaching. The skills of coaching are the same no matter what topic you coach around or target audience you serve.Listening on many levels, asking powerful questions, mirroring what your client said back to them — all those excellent skills and more are the same no matter who you're coaching or what you're coaching about. But also, it's really critical to realize that all coaching IS life coaching.Whether you are a business coach, relationship coach, health coach, career coach or some other fill-in-the-blank coach, you are essentially a life coach. If you've chosen a track it's to help you focus and create a sustainable business. And you might have expertise or experience to apply to that particular territory of life — business, career, relationships or health. All Coaches Should SpecializeBut calling yourself a life coach or specializing in life coaching might not serve you well because it's non-specific. Life includes everything. Helping everyone about everything might seem wonderful or a relief to you but if you don't specialize you might seem like a hobbyist rather than a business owner. You might lose credibility. Also, it can affect your income. A few years ago statistics showed that coaches who specialize earn at least 40% more than those that do not.I always encourage coaches towards specificity in everything. The more specific you are in your target audience, niche, messaging and offers the better it will be for you. When you specify everything you'll find it easier to attract and enroll a client. Why?Because broad language that tries to be all encompassing doesn't grab attention. Let me illustrate the value of specificity.Which of these messages attracts you more?I help people succeed and be happy.orI help coaches earn more and market less by choosing a highly profitable niche they'll love.I don't know any coach who would respond more positively to the first message over the second. That's because, as a coach, you want certain things, you have certain challenges. And when I speak of those certain things it piques your interest. You want to earn more and market less. And choosing a niche might be the biggest challenge you face at the beginning of your business. The same is true with all messaging and whenever marketing a service like coaching. To read why Life Coaching is the least distinctive and lucrative niche read more here.
If I've learned anything from life it's that simple is better. Less is more. And that's true when it comes to staying organized in your coaching business. Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/149I happen to be one of the most organized people I know. But I wasn't always like that.I also used to be a lousy money manager.I also used to be hopeless at writing.I also used to suck at managing people. So, no matter what you think you're hopeless at now, you can change that. You can grow into whoever you want to be and however you want to live your life. What changed those things for me? First, I stopped telling myself what I'm no good at.The harsh way you talk to yourself is the main habit to stop. You'll be so glad you did. It's a life skill. If I can do it, you can do it.Now try this … every time you think you're not good at something get curious.Curiosity is a powerful game changer. It quiets the amygdala – the part of your brain associated with fear. And then, attention and creativity take over. When you explore something with curiosity, dopamine — the reward chemical — floods your body and you feel good. And then you can easily get past the “way it used to be”.So, get organized coaches. It feels good. And it will mean you can serve clients better while you earn more.Template Everything You Can in Your Coaching BusinessThis is my secret weapon against the limits of time. Everything that can be templated in my business is templated. For example, I have a template for my Session Recap for clients. Of course, it's customized where it needs to be within the template so it's valuable for both of us.I have a template for typical responses to prospects' questions. But that's doesn't mean they don't come across as personalized. They do.I template processes. I have a 15-page Word document with 15 different processes I take my clients through in my Signature Program so I can cut and paste them into emails as we go along. My clients always say – I love how fast you respond. Part of it is about the templates.I also have pre-made guides for my clients to save us time in session. So ask yourself …What can be templated now to save me time later? And then be sure you create a place where it's easy to find and use the templates. Me? I have a folder in my email for Templates.Prep for Tomorrow and Next WeekThis may seem basic but you wouldn't believe how many people don't do this.Prep tomorrow today. Prep for next week at the end of this week.I have a master to-do list with 2 categories – Personal and Business. And it has tasks that need to be done soon and later. I pull from the master to-do list to partially create my plan for tomorrow and for next week. But here's the secret – my daily to-do list is super short. No more than 3 things. If I have extra time after completing the 3 things, I'll pick from the Master list tasks that will fit the time I have open.Ask yourself … What must be done tomorrow? What must be done next week? What will help me get ahead next week?To read the last of 3 organizational secrets find the full transcript here.
This episode is inspired by an excellent question posted by two coaches in my Facebook group called Prosperous Coach Club. Find the full transcript at prosperouscoach.com/148Before we dig into this, let's get on the same page …What is a Smart Coaching Niche? To me, a smart coaching niche has 3 clear components:1. One unique viable target audience full of seekers – people who want to grow personally and professionally and are actively seeking solutions. Without this, it's hard to have a successful niche.2. A strategic coaching business model built around what that audience urgently wants and the BIG problem that's in their way. If you don't know what will motivate investment for your audience you don't have a robust enough niche to earn well.3. Your skills and talents applied to those other two things. This is more than just coaching skills. This is bringing forward all the skills and maybe even expertise that will make you credible to your audience – something that help you relate to them and them relate to you.A coaching niche is weak if one of more of those things is missing or not solid enough so it's worth it to take the time to develop a niche fully. And let me just stop the worries here … everyone has skills to bring to the table. I've never worked professionally with a coach that didn't have options for their niche based on the sum total of who they are. It's good to remember that coaching is a business and you need to operate in the marketplace. What do I mean by that? Your business needs to be more than selling coaching services. Unless you don't need to earn, you need to frequently grab the attention of and enroll clients who pay you well. That's not a casual thing for the long run. It's totally doable and some strategy is needed. One Coaching Business for One Well-Formed NicheI encourage my clients to develop one business built for the long term around one well-formed niche. Why limit it? Well, because two niches may very well feel like having two businesses, which is like having two full time jobs. No one really wants that.It comes down to what you can handle effectively. You may be able to do many things at once but is that the best life to live? Why not build a business that's sustainable for the long run?You might start out with two niches but somewhere along the way one will get more attention and the other will suffer unless there is some way to leverage the two. So let's talk about those possibilities. Two Different Audiences for Your CoachingTargeting two distinctly different audiences is not a good idea unless the two audiences are related in some easy way.To read the full transcript including 4 circumstances where two niches could work for you, go here.
Today's episode is inspired by a sticky question. Do you really need to be certified in order to say that you're a professional coach? Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/147It's a sticky question because there are two camps — the yeas and nays — and both have strong opinions.I say … whether you certify or not is your decision. 2 Types of Coach Certification1. Certifying through a coach training organization. You enroll, complete training and certify through a review process when training is complete.2. Independent certification such as through the International Coach Federation (ICF). You work towards it by completing requirements and paying an application fee. You'll need a certain number of hours of paid coaching, completed training with an accredited organization, and being mentored by people who are certified at the master level. To maintain or advance ICF certification you have to re-up every few years and also take continuing education courses. It's a significant ongoing investment in time and money.By the way, the ICF and other certifying bodies often change requirements for the various levels of certification. So, if you're on route to certify, stay in touch with the requirements so you're not blindsided by changes.Independent certification helps to mature emerging fields and garner acceptance in the marketplace. ICF launched in 1995, when life coaching was a new concept, and now has a presence in 140 countries and over 30,000 members. There is a segment of the coaching industry that will firmly say YES, that you must be certified to be considered a professional coach. I've softened on this over the years, which I'll cover more later. 5 Main Reasons Proponents Give to Independently CertifyReason #1 Coaches who certify are more likely to earn more and not drop out of the profession.Reason #2 Certification distinguishes you from all the people who co-opt the term 'coach' but who have not been rigorously trained.Reason #3 Maintaining certification requires you to stay in tune with best practices.I'll chime in here. Independent certification does not necessarily mean you'll earn more.Your income as a coach largely depends on your chosen target audience, how you charge for your offers and your ability to market and enroll.Reason #4 The public will perceive you as being a more skilled coach if you're certified.Reason #5 Your clients will require it.Credibility largely depends on how you conduct yourself. And most clients do not require or even know about certification. In my 20 years in the industry, none of my potential or actual clients has ever asked me if I was certified. And, I've checked recently with experienced coaches. We agree that for most niches the client does not require or even ask about certification. The Bottom Line About Certifying As a CoachIf you go into the executive or leadership coaching track where you'll provide services to people within corporations, coaches that are ICF certified or with another independent body are much more likely have a competitive edge. Organizations know to ask about it.For many other tracks, niches and audiences, being certified is a non-issue.So here's what I tell my clients ... why not work towards certification? To read my advice for coaches and see the rest of the transcipt, go here.
This episode is inspired by YOU. You've helped me surpass 100,000 listens of Prosperous Coach Podcast. I'm so grateful to you for binge listening and sharing my podcast with other coaches. Now, maybe I can help you start your own podcast.I'll tell you what podcasting has meant for me and I'll share some details about what it takes, what it costs plus a few powerful questions to ask yourself about whether podcasting is right for you. Find the full transcript of this episode at prosperouscoach.com/146My podcast has revolutionized my business and also given me great joy.I posted a blog for over 8 years and it was hugely instrumental in attracting ideal clients to my services. But it was never as impactful as my podcast has been. I think it's because listeners hear my voice weekly so there's more of a sense of intimacy. People feel like they get to know me in ways that can't come across only in words on a page. And because my episodes are short and I'm consistent about putting out a weekly episode I have a lot of binge listeners. Isn't that fun! When I have a Discovery Call with a coach who wants to enroll in my 5 month VIP program, they often say: “You sound just like you do on your podcast!” That's reassuring to them. Some of the joy factor is in putting my voice out there. I say what I think and feel.Your voice is more than just sounds and words —it's an integral part of who you are. When you speak up and speak out you're stepping fully into your personal power. It's almost impossible to be anything but authentic when you show up weekly with your voice on air.I didn't expect the satisfaction of putting my voice out there. I can stumble over words, just be myself and my audience is forgiving. I can tell you personal things about myself and know that I'm relating not burdening. It's connective not self-deprecating.And I get so much positive feedback. It's nourishing to know that my philosophy, guidance and truth telling resonates with so many coaches. A few coaching training organizations suggest my podcast to their students. I know I'm helping people who will never hire me. And that's gratifying. But I also know that people I'm meant to work with will hire me and we're likely to start our journey with a deeper understanding between us.And when people reach out and fill out the application on my Work with Rhonda page of my website, they are 99% ready to enroll. Wow! No other form of messaging or marketing has brought me that kind of ease. And then there's the accessibility piece. People in over 100 countries hear my podcast and that's growing. So what is a podcast? You might have listened but not really known what a podcast is. It's similar to a radio show but it's delivered online in episodes that can be experienced on demand rather than by tuning into a specific station at a specific time. Listeners can subscribe to a podcast through apps they download onto their phone like Apple Podcast, Stitcher, iHeartRadio and other directories who, at this point, all offer free listening accounts and downloadable apps. My listeners can also hear my episodes on my website. When you subscribe to a podcast, the app brings new episodes up first. You can also click SEE ALL and explore the back catalog of a show. There are limited show notes or transcripts that listeners can see on their apps. I put links to other episodes and resources in my transcripts. To read about what podcasting costs and questions to decide if it's right for you read the
This episode is super short and inspired by the saboteur in all of us who keeps us from greatness. Find the transcript and links to related episodes at prosperouscoach.com/145.You remember Superman — the dude who could do anything and seemed unstoppable except when he encountered Kryptonite. That green crystal weakened Superman so he was powerless.Your coaching business kryptonite is something you avoid. It's the thing that keeps you from your super power. You want to coach for a living. You want to help people achieve and transform. And you want to earn well at this so you don't have to work at someone else's company on someone else's goals with their rules. So what's your kryptonite in your coaching business? It could be something deeply personal and unique to you. I've said this before … a recurring lesson for me is about personal power. When I stand firm in my personal power and do what's right for me with integrity everything in my business works better. There might be something like that for you. It trips you up time and again. I can tell you it's a great opportunity for you to put your awareness on that thing and evolve.Your kryptonite could be about making a decision. Here are 2 decisions that, left unmade, will hold you back from starting much less achieving success in your coaching business:1. Choosing a narrow and viable audience of seekers to serve. It's the first big decision that could make or break your time as a coach. But that's not to say that there's only one right decision for you. Sometimes it's about making the decision not what the decision is that keeps you stuck.2. Building your niche around helping them solve their big problem that's in the way of their big goal.Or your kryptonite could be situational. You come to a moment that requires something of you and you're stopped in your tracks. Here are three things …1. Inviting prospects to work with you. Or maybe not. Some clients will hire you outright. Some people need to be asked. If you don't ask, they might not decide.2. Charging enough with clients so you can earn well. This is big kryptonite, guys. If it's not faced, it will keep your business floundering. Find my episode about this at prosperouscoach.com/823. Putting out valuable content every week to stay in front of your audience. This is often what it takes to get noticed in the online world. And if you operate off line then it may be about setting up meetings regularly or networking. Its usually fear or lack of know-how that keeps you from moving forward with confidence to the next step. I help my clients move past both.Your kryptonite could be about smaller moments in time:1. Asking for testimonials. I failed to do this for over a decade! And it can make a difference in whether people hire you or not. Don't wait like I did. Find my episode on this at prosperouscoach.com/502. Following up with prospects. You won't bother them. You'll wake them from distractions so they can make a decision.3. Inviting past clients back. It's worth it. This is easy money and can be lovely to reconnect. To read about the 3 big mindset blocks and more of the transcript go here.
This episode is inspired by a recent look at my business analytics, which are confirming that my business is surging right now and yours could be too! Find the full transcript for this episode at prosperouscoach.com/144.What are business analytics and why am I talking about them? Well you can't know what times are most effective for promotion unless you set up and track analytics. Sound complicated? Not really. For me, there are 7 sets of numbers I regularly review and track that tell me how many people:1. are on my website and how long they engage there2. are subscribing to get my freebie3. open and click through on the links in my emails4. listen to my podcast and what percentage of the episode they listen to5. respond to my posts on social channels.6. fill out my application to work with me and sign up for a Discovery Call7. are enrolling in a Strategy SessionThese are all my opportunities for a future connection with a person who could become my paying client. What opportunities have you set up to connect and attract paying clients?I've made every aspect of my business — my website, my lead magnet, my podcast and more — highly visible and compelling for my target audience. I never do any type of promoting to a general audience.Monitor Analytics About Your Coaching BusinessDo you have stats about your business that you're watching? If not, I encourage you to set up processes to attract ideal clients and keep their attention. Then figure out how you can measure that. Apps make this easy.If you do have numbers you can review, what do you do with them? Soon I'll do an episode about this. For now, I'll just say … never let your stats depress you. Instead let them spur you to action. So, my question in the title of this episode — when is the most effective time to promote your coaching business — is a bit of a trick question. The truth is that it's best to promote all the time. All. The. Time.Never Hard Sell Your Coaching ProspectsAnd I want to make it clear I'm not talking at all about constantly asking people to hire you or posting ads all the time. I don't believe in that pushy approach. If you're running your coaching business the way I do and the way I teach my clients in my VIP program, you are using the simplest coaching business model and have built a beautiful customer journey so your ideal clients steadily flow right to you ready to enroll. I'm not advocating hard selling. Consistent non-salesy marketing is the best approach for coaches. My new clients tell me that one reason they chose me over other business mentors for coaches is because I didn't hard sell them … ever. They never felt I was pushing or attached to them hiring me.So take away this point today … run your business so that you're promoting in a non-salesy way all the time. Do that by getting in front of and staying in front of your audience with high value content. Speak their language.Inconsistent marketing is usually a waste of time because people forget who you are and their interest is harder to spark again.Read about the 4 times when coaches can get better traction in their business here.
Do you have a coaching niche that hasn't paid off yet? This episode explores 10 strategic things that could be missing for you. The full transcript of this episode can be found at prosperouscoach.com/143.Nearly all coaches are hoping for more traction in their niche. And I want you to understand something that may take the sting out of this. Nearly all businesses of all kinds are hoping for more traction all the time!So you may be thinking: “It sounds like it's not worth it to start a business!” It absolutely is worth it if you're serious about being the driver of a career that's tailor made for you. If you want to choose how and when you work and with whom … if you want to be the one who decides your own fees, when you take time off and how often … your own business can give you that.BUT you have to be in it to win it. Win it a bit at a time until you find the sweet spot. Screw your courage to the sticking place— as Shakespeare advised — and take risks knowing that you CAN make it with time and patience.Maybe you don't have time or patience. That in itself is a deal breaker. It's not a good idea to start any type of business out of desperation. If you are on your last legs financially starting a business is not a good risk for now.Start your business from a place of strength. Start your business when you're hungry enough to motivate yourself and not so hungry that you'll be under enormous pressure. You don't have to be independently wealthy to start a business. You just need a wealth of patience plus the willingness to try something, give it a fair shot for a decent amount of time while making small adjustments to improve yourself and your strategy.ALLOW your business to unfold but don't sit back and wait for it to happen without you.I know I've used this metaphor in the last episode … your business is your baby. You would not judge a child harshly for not having it altogether in the first few months or the first few years would you? No, because you know there are developmental stages and every child has it's own pace. That's true for your business also.If you've had your niche for a long time – let's say a couple of years – and it hasn't begun to pay off the way you want it to, should you abandon it?Well the answer is possibly. Sorry there's just not a clear straight forward answer here because there are so many variables to consider. Some have to do with the way you're behaving and some have to do with strategy. So let's look inside your niche and your business. And by the way, I did a whole podcast series called Coaching Business Checkup that culminated in a beautiful free downloadable assessment to help you identify what needs to change in your coaching business … and yeah, it could be your niche for sure. It could also be several other things. This episode is short and eye opening. Find the Show Notes at prosperouscoach.com/130.The other day I was helping one of my VIP clients set her fees for her Signature Program and our conversation inspired this episode. Anything having to do with money in your coaching business such as income and fees brings up old emotions:1. Fear of succeeding and failing.2. Insecurity about worth.3. Family or cultural beliefs about money.4. Fear of rejection.5. And, mistaken assumptions about why people buy.I always encourage my clients to “do the math” rather than choose fees emotionally or based on erroneous ideas about what the market will bear.By becoming somewhat dispassionate and stepping into the practical coaches can begin to understand how they can help themselves earn well.Setting low fees is the most common way that coaches shoot themselves in the foot. Another way is by not setting goals. And coaches aren’t the only ones who fail to set business goals. Why don’t people set financial and other metric goals for their business?Well, it’s the same 5 reasons I listed above — fears, insecurities, learned beliefs and mistaken assumptions. But here’s what I know for sure … if you do NOT set goals you’ll fail to grow your coaching business income. If you do set goals you will earn more. It’s as simple as that.Let’s say in the first full year of your coaching business you don’t set any goals. Instead you just hope for the best and serendipitously earn $25,000 (for simplicity I’m talking dollars here). Now let’s say you, in an alternative universe, risk setting a stretch goal to earn $100,000 in that first year and you earned $75,000. Would you beat yourself up about that? No, you’d be thrilled! And you’d be inspired to consider what worked and what didn’t work in your strategy. The point of goals is not to beat yourself up if you don’t make the goal. The point to goals is to stretch yourself and to think through how you’ll make the goal. Strategy is what brings about financial success. You’ll not only set financial goals but other metric goals too, such as how many Discovery Calls you want to have with prospects (because that’s the enrollment opportunity) and how many podcast episodes about what topics would inspire your audience to have the Discovery Call with you.Goal-less business is not really a business at all. It’s a hobby.Don’t let fears or limiting beliefs keep you from setting goals for your coaching business. Set the goal then plan how you’ll make the goal. Then celebrate your results, even if you didn’t make the stretch goal, and assess what worked and what didn’t. That’s how you step into the CEO role of your own business and thrive!

This episode is inspired by a smart question from one of my VIP clients. So I’m going to reveal where expenses go for my coaching business. And while I’m at it, I’ll share common expense pitfalls for coaches and finance savvy mindset tips.I know this might seem boring but earning well is not boring. Losing profit after all you work feels like a tragedy. Don’t go there.Reading the show notes for this episode will be especially helpful because I’ll list the sources of my expenses but I’m not going to bore you by listing them out verbally. Find those complete show notes at prosperouscoach.com/111.Bright Shiny Apps & Services Steal Your Coaching ProfitsFirst let’s talk about not-so-smart uses of your money for your coaching business. There are multitudes of ads for bright shiny apps and services coming at you in your inbox and on social media. And in a moment of scarcity thinking you might be tempted to buy one, and another, and then another. You know, you might think something like “maybe THIS will make the difference in my business”. That can be a dangerous thought. Those seemingly little $10/month and $20/month expenses quickly add up to thousands of dollars annually that your earnings might not cover. So think smart and choose wisely. It’s so tempting as a new coach to get services for online client portals, social media time saving apps, virtual assistants, bookkeepers and all sorts of extras that in the long run probably won’t add enough value to help you earn more.Keep Your Business Low Labor and Low OverheadDesign your business to run lean. That doesn’t mean being cheap with your business. The old penny wise pound foolish adage applies.Smart expenses are those that save you significant time so you can serve clients more efficiently and earn more. But it takes some trial and error to learn how to invest money only where it really counts.Be strategic with this rule: Only invest in what you need right now not what you think you might need someday.Regularly dump apps and services that aren’t helping you earn more. If you have a low-income month or year, it could partially be that you’re spending too freely.Think twice about the fancy, expensive coaches portal or top of line email campaign service. You don’t need those. Here’s a tip … if you’re 100% sure you like an app or service and it’s truly helping your bottom line then opt for annual payments for as many expenses as you can instead of monthly because you’ll save a lot.Startup Expenses Are HigherInvesting in your business is not only necessary, but it’s a privilege. Think of expenses for useful services as a blessing that helps you thrive. Pay for them with gratitude. For example, significant investment goes into coach training (the vocational skills side of your business) and for hiring a business mentor like me to help you get everything set up right the first time (which is the strategic side of your business). Also I think it’s wise to invest in a good web designer who is also a coder to create a WordPress website for you. Doing your own site on Wix or Squarespace may come back to bite you now or later. It is not unusual to spend $25,000 out of pocket before you earn much as a coach. So don’t let anyone make you feel bad about start up expenses. It’s normal for ALL businesses and entrepreneurs. But do choose wisely.Don’t Waste Money on These ExpensesFinance experts say ...Find more Show Notes here.

This will be a super short episode. And it’s part of the Smart Mindsets & Habits series.I feel so honored that when I work with my clients I get to see them shift their mindset in ways that will help them succeed faster at this game called entrepreneurship.By the way, thinking of building your coaching business as a game is one way to take the pressure off and enjoy the journey. So the specific mindset I’m digging into today is about OWNING your right:· Own your right to be in business for yourself· Own your right to earn well· Own your right to live the life you wantThat may sound odd. Let me explain. My Early Coaching Business Was An AlbatrossWhen I was new to my own coaching business I treated myself like I didn’t deserve to be in business, like I didn’t deserve to earn well and have the life I want. Here’s what I did:1. I overcomplicated my business model by offering too many options. 2. I undervalued myself and charged way too little to sustain my business. 3. I over-delivered in every way. 4. I was too accommodating with my schedule.5. I allowed late payments.6. Ultimately, I didn’t think through what I wanted and plot a strategic course to get there.Bottom line … I was operating unconsciously in my coaching business. I was driven by a mindset that doesn’t go well with being the CEO of a business. Big mistake.A few years in, I realized that I had created a monster — a business that was complex, running me ragged and paying me poorly. Its part of the reason why I now teach coaches to create a Simple Coaching Business Model and to strategically grow their business from the get go.The Big Takeaway for CoachesSo here’s the secret I want you to come away with from this episode … ACT AS IFAct as if you are already in high demand. There are 7 ways I can think of that will help you do this:1. First decide what you want your life to be like.2. Strategize every step of your business development to fit that vision.3. Only offer times on your schedule that you truly want to work.4. Only offer exactly what you want to offer and not what you think you should offer.5. Create a low overhead, easy to manage business.6. Treat yourself with the respect you want your colleagues, prospects and clients to have for you.7. Charge prices that will help you reach your financial goals right NOW!Imagine the difference between a business where you act like you deserve all the perks that come with being your own boss and a business where you act like you don’t deserve that.Read more SHOW NOTES at https://prosperouscoach.com/82
This episode, which is part of the Smart Mindsets & Habits series, is a follow on to Episode 80, which was called Competition, Comparison and Shame in the Coaching Industry.I received many brave and heart felt comments on that episode, including this one from Marian:“Thank you for this episode, Rhonda. I feel like you’re responding to what’s inside my head! This was amazingly helpful to me and has inspired me to reach out more to support and share with other coaches, especially my classmates.”Well done, Marian, because that kindness you shared to other coaches goes a long way for making the coaching industry a more friendly and encouraging field. We need that. It’s not easy to talk about shame. But the upside, is that once you acknowledge it you can quickly realize what triggers it and that helps you let it go. A private client in my VIP Coaching Business Breakthrough program was baring her experience of shame with me in our session today. And I’m so grateful to you, Barbara, that you have generously given me permission to share a bit about our discussion in this episode. Your willingness to be vulnerable helps you and every other coach who hears this podcast. Being vulnerable is one of the ways we can love each other up so we all become more successful at this big coaching business endeavor. The Cycle of Shame for a New CoachBarbara told me that she felt the shame of comparison today when she was encouraging a current client to re-up for more coaching. And talking it through we realized is that shame can come up fast whenever you’re doing something that you care deeply about that you haven’t done much before. Here’s what I think it can look like as a new coach …· First there’s feeling ashamed that you don’t know everything right now. (Shouldn’t I be a master at coaching? Shouldn’t I know exactly how to do everything?)· Next comes shame for needing expert help to do it right. (Oh no, I’m spending more money when I’m not yet earning from coaching. Why is everything so hard for me?)· Then, as you are on the learning curve, there’s shame that it’s taking a while to get everything right.· And if you model aspects of your business on what other coaches are doing there’s the shame that comes from comparison.· There’s shame that you’re not 100% together as these other coaches seem to be. (By the way ‘seem’ is the operative word there.)· When fear comes up about crossing thresholds in your business shame tags along because it’s embarrassing as an adult to feel fear, especially if that fear makes you doubt yourself or stop taking action.· Imposter Syndrome makes shame darker still. Why would anyone hire me? Who am I to help them?· And, shame surfaces in the sales and enrollment process. Just having to ask someone to hire and pay you can feel shameful. Why would anyone pay this much? What if I can’t deliver? Will they figure out I’m a fraud because I don’t know exactly what I’m doing yet?Breaking the Cycle of Shame in Your Coaching BusinessSo there’s this insidious cycle of shame. And if you don’t have mentoring support, shame can literally stop you from moving forward – crush your momentum. To read more of the Show Notes for this episode and the key to stopping the cycle of shame go to prosperouscoach.com/81
Do you know how sometimes it helps to be reminded of something?Coaches are smart people. We have lots of wisdom brimming inside of us. And, during the pandemic, I especially need reminding about many helpful things. And after recent conversations with past clients and current clients I thought it might be helpful to reprise an older episode. This is all about why it’s so easy to get stuck as a new coach and how to snap out of it! You can find show notes for this episode and links to other helpful information at prosperouscoach.com/72Let’s roll! It's got to be said because it's breaking my heart to see so many coaches bogged down and unable to move forward with clarity ... because they've overloaded their brain with unnecessary ideas and future tasks for your coaching business.I've talked about overwhelm before in Ep #20 - How to Stop Saying 'Yes" to Bright Shiny ObjectsThat episode was mostly about wasting money, time and brain power on programs that you're not developmentally ready for yet as a business owner. Advanced strategies and tactics that won't work well for you until you have the business foundation in place. Now let's dig in deeper to what's actually happening in your mind and your emotional body when you heap more and more information on yourself. When new coaches reach out to work with me, they fill out a questionnaire on my website. I ask them to give me a snapshot of what they're doing day to day to build their business.Nearly every person tells me their head is spinning with all the research they're doing.· They are looking at other coach's websites. Oh no! That really won't be helpful.· They read everything they can about coaching and coaching business tips. They're on loads of lists, force feeding themselves with information.· They're surfing for answers to BIG questions that really can't be answered in a free blog or webinar.· And, they're signing up for every free webinar and download they can get. And sometimes investing in programs they aren't ready for. Here's the truth. You can't possibly consume a firehose of information and stay sane. It leaves you breathless with overwhelm and unable to move forward. This is what I call the new coach swirl and spin. And those are the words that I hear coaches use. They say: "My mind is swirling! My head is spinning! And I'm so confused that I'm paralyzed."I so know that place!Thousands of bits of disconnected information has literally shut down your executive function, your creativity and intuition. And that's when fear and doubt surges up within you.· Doubts about whether you can succeed in coaching.· Doubts that anyone would pay you.· Doubts about everything you've been working on.· Fears that you've made the wrong decision, that you've wasted time and money. And then your brain starts pulling up all the "evidence" to support those doubts.Pretty soon you're in a depression. Anxiety has you in it's grips.Everything slows to a dead stop. But it does not feel restful. You start thinking about giving up. Part of you wants to give up. You think it would be so much easier. Then your ever helpful brain begins to justify that idea. And shame surfaces. That's the new coach swirl and spin.To read about the 4 ways to break through swirl and spin go to prosperouscoach.com/72.
This episode is part of my Money Mastery series. It’s the follow on episode to How to Develop Your Signature Coaching Program. Find that episode at prosperouscoach.com/59 The show notes for this episode are at prosperouscoach.com/60Common Pricing Strategies and What Works Best for CoachingI can think of 3 common pricing strategies for pricing:1. Cost plus pricing – where you calculate your costs then mark up the program so it pays you well.2. Competitive pricing – where you set your price based on your competition.3. Value based pricing – where you set your price based on the value of your offer to the client.I do encourage you to the do the math of what it will cost you to deliver your program. Most coaches miss this piece. And it’s quite eye opening to realize the cost of the time you spend getting a single client in addition to specific costs of marketing and inclusions in the program. That said, to ultimately determine the cost of your program I prefer VALUE based pricing. Here’s the reality, if you narrow to serve a viable audience and create a unique program based on market research, then your program probably doesn’t exist out there so competitive pricing or so called “market value” isn’t a useful guideline. Also, few if any of your prospects are ever going to do cost comparisons, especially if you don’t sell coaching but rather offer a unique program.Purchasing a program such as I suggest you create is an emotional decision. They will hear or see your message. Their trust in you builds because you’ve struck a resonant chord with all that you’re doing. Then, they go to your website, which is hopefully already designed as a client winning coaching website not an online brochure. On that website are beautifully streamlined words and conversion processes that gently encourage visitors to have a Discovery Session with you.All of this is thoughtfully coordinated and strategized but in a non-salesy way to build trust with potential clients rather than trying to convince them about the value of coaching. They hire you because they like you and trust you. You’ve been in front of them with valuable content and your website reinforces that. Then, in the Discovery Session you lovingly assess if they are a good fit for your program and enroll them. You don’t want to sell people – to have to convince them to hire you. It’s unsavory. It makes you feel skeevy. But if you have a signature program that you have thoughtfully crafted to fit their circumstances, their pain and desires then no hard sell is necessary. You do need to ask them to enroll though. ; )To read more show notes go to https://prosperouscoach.com/60.

So you got into Coaching or Consulting to help people. I got that. You are probably good at what you do. But do you know how to get clients . . . paying clients?? Many coaches or consultants are not. For some reason, finding, getting, and continually serving clients by offering them more of your products and services is too often the weak link in most coaches' business plans.Tune in to Part 1 of two segments entitled "Six Steps To Double Your Coaching Income... In 2 Months!" On this show, Dr. Craig will lay out a complete plan for knowing yourself, finding your niche and creating what is known in marketing as "the ethical bribe."
Andrea J. Lee, CEO of Thought Partners International LLC has been a huge influence on my approach to business since I read her book Multiple Streams of Coaching Income in 2006. She is one of those rare individuals who combine clear business intelligence with wit and humor. Her coaching is said to be a combination of tenderness and bite. I could not agree more.In this edition of the pricing series, Andrea will talk about Guerrilla Pricing Tactics including:The concept of free, which she terms a "pink spoon marketing." This is creating a business on the concept of generosity (much like you get with free tastes of ice cream from pink spoons at the ice cream shop). What too much free looks like in business, which can involve going to long at free and getting kickback when you start to charge for services. What too little free looks like in business, i.e. too little blog content and a quick sale of products. What is a product funnel and how do you use it to design your product offerings? The pros and cons of starting at the top or the bottom of the funnel. The why and how of market comparison in pricing. What are your values and brand in business and how does that impact the price points you choose? I hope you enjoy the conversation! And if you get inspired to learn a lot more from Andrea, check out the live event she is hosting in Vancouver, Canada in March, 2010 called The Wealthy Thought Leader. (I will be there, and would love to see you!)
