Highly processed vegetable oils, derived from seeds and beans, have become a dominant part of modern diets despite significant health concerns. Historical biases in nutrition science, influenced by the vegetable oil industry, have promoted these oils despite evidence from controlled studies showing negative health outcomes. These oils are unstable, prone to oxidation, and can create toxic byproducts, particularly when exposed to heat, contributing to inflammation and chronic diseases. Although they can lower LDL cholesterol, studies have shown that this reduction does not necessarily improve heart health and may increase risks for other conditions like cancer. In contrast, traditional fats like extra virgin olive oil and omega-3-rich foods offer more stability and health benefits, emphasizing the need for a balanced, minimally processed approach to dietary fats. In this episode, I talk with Nina Teicholz and Max Lugavere to explore the health impacts of different types of fats and oils, debunking misconceptions around cooking with extra virgin olive oil and emphasizing the dangers of industrial vegetable oils. Nina Teicholz is a science journalist and author of the New York Times bestseller, The Big Fat Surprise, which upended the conventional wisdom on dietary fat—especially saturated fat—and spurred a new conversation about whether these fats in fact cause heart disease. She is also the founder of the Nutrition Coalition, a non-profit working to ensure that government nutrition policy is transparent and evidence-based—work for which she's been asked to testify before the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Canadian Senate. Max Lugavere is a health and science journalist and the author of the New York Times best-seller Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life, now published in 10 languages around the globe. His sophomore book, also a best-seller, is called The Genius Life: Heal Your Mind, Strengthen Your Body, and Become Extraordinary and latest book Genius Kitchen. Max is the host of a #1 iTunes health and wellness podcast, called The Genius Life. Max appears regularly on The Dr. Oz Show, The Rachael Ray Show, and The Doctors. He has contributed to Medscape, Vice, Fast Company, CNN, and The Daily Beast, has been featured on NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, and in The New York Times and People Magazine. This episode is sponsored by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens. While inflammation is a natural part of life that can serve a beneficial role, we start to see disease when inflammatory pathways are constantly activated. That's why many brain symptoms—like brain fog, anxiety, memory loss, and more—can actually be caused by systemic inflammation. The foods we eat, the toxins we're exposed to, our stress levels, and our genetics are just some of the many aspects that can impact the body—and the brain's—propensity towards inflammation. In this episode, I discuss inflammation in the brain with Dr. Todd LePine. We dive into the many factors that can drive neuroinflammation, the range of conditions that are linked to brain inflammation, and how we work with patients to cool this inflammation. I also talk with Max Lugavere about how nutritional deficiencies affect the brain.Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine, and is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. With the right tools and information, you can sharpen your brain and say goodbye to the symptoms of old age for as long as possible.   Radical Longevity with Ann Louise Gittleman Ann Louise Gittleman is a pioneer in the health and healing arena. Ann Louise is highly respected as an international leader in diet, nutrition, the environment, and a proven health trendsetter.   Getting to the Bottom of Your Symptoms There are hidden harmful chemicals in so many of the products we interact with daily. This can impact everything from your mental clarity to your cellular longevity and mood. That is why it is so important to equip yourself with the knowledge needed to ditch those toxins and create constant and straightforward habits that will keep your brain and body sharp. Everything from the pans you cook into the type of tea you drink can have a massive impact on the way your body functions from here on out, so why not make choices that serve you optimally?   Harnessing Your Epigenetic's for Long-Term Health Getting older is 20% of your genetics and 80% of your epigenetics. This means that you hold the power to decide what your future self looks and feels like. It is all about balance, knowing your hormones, genetics, and daily routines that will set the stage for you to thrive later in life. By repairing your cellular metabolism and giving your body and mind what they need to succeed, you can get ahead of, or reverse, the symptoms of age and continue to live your life on your own terms. It is a privilege that is denied to far too many. So I take it upon myself, and I want to share with everyone else that you have to be a steward of your health, body, mind, and spirit. It is up to you; your health is in your own hands.” (6:47) “We want to save people's lives, we don't want them to live longer in a period of debilitation and loss of independence. We want them to live with gusto, grace, and a lot of guts.” (15:16) “Aging is 20% genetics and 80% epigenetics. So it is what you are taking, what you are supplementing with, what you are thinking, what your spiritual beliefs are, what your dietary habits are, what your exercise habits are. All of that can overcome genetics.” (18:52) “It's about balance, knowing your hormones, and a little bit about your genetics. But it's basically about what you are doing on a daily basis.” (21:04) “You need to actually measure, and test. I started listening to her podcast, “Fit Body, Happy Joints” and I LOVE it already. Shannon taught me ways of rethinking my workouts and I love learning from her. I can't wait to learn more. I love how she taught me this week not to just do 2-3 really high intensity training workouts and be done thinking I'm good, but to consider doing more consistent workouts that don't wear my muscles out completely like my intense training days.  She reminded me that there is a narrow window of total number of calories my body will burn in a day. So, just because I exercised more, doesn't mean I burned more calories. That's a revolutionary thought for me. I think you will really enjoy this episode and learn something new and be inspired this week when you think about doing a little exercise. I'm rounding out our series on caregiving and the Alzheimer's journey for September, and I thought there is no better way than to talk about some things that we can do in our own lives to stay healthy both physically and mentally. Now, I'll caveat this with that I am not a mental health professional or a doctor. So the things that I'm going to talk about are coming from just real-life experiences, either for myself or for clients that I have worked with. We're going to talk about mental health and physical health, emotional health, and our general well-being during today's episode, and specifically how those relate directly back to your caregiving experience.Find out more about Forethought Planning: www.forethoughtplanning.comFollow Forethought Planning on social media:FacebookLinkedInYouTube channelScore our free Wealth Assessment tool on our website.Securities offered through LPL Financial, a member of FINRA/SIPC. Key Takeaways: Ann Louise is grateful to be on this planet, to be living, and to be healthy. Don’t take your health for granted. Ann Louise has written 35 books, with her latest being called Radical Longevity. There are seven new rules to radical longevity. What are they? You have to boost your immunity! Here are some vitamins you should have in your cupboard. Parasites are still a big problem in our society. Here’s what you need to be looking out for. Ann Louise is a big advocate for a colon cleanse. You should be doing this at least twice a year. Do you have diabetes or want to prevent it from happening? You have to make a commitment to eat foods with low animal fats. It starts with looking at your diet and modifying it. How do you free up and loosen your fascia as you get older? An important step to radical longevity is to enhance your cellular regeneration. What do you need to know about lithium and how does it reverse Alzheimer's? Let’s talk about copper. How do you properly feed your gut microbiome so your body can use food as healthy fuel to heal itself? You have to reduce wheat and grains in your lives. They are the biggest source of mycotoxins. What are some of the best ways to improve your sexual health? Ann Louise does a quick recap of what she talked about in today’s episode!   Episode Summary: Ann Louise Gittleman shares seven tips for you in this week’s episode on how you can practice radical longevity in your life so that you can reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s, get rid of unknown parasites hiding in the body, boost your immune system, and so much more! We have the ability to live stronger and better than our previous generations; it’s time we take advantage of that and live our best (and healthy!) lives.   Guest Bio: As one of the world’s foremost experts in functional and integrative medicine, Ann Louise holds an M.S. in Nutrition Education from Columbia University, has the title of Certified Nutrition Specialist (C.N.S.) from the American College of Nutrition, and a Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition. It is a privilege that’s denied to too many people.”   “We have the capability of living longer, living stronger, living better than any generation previously. We’re living in a very toxic world. So we have to take that into consideration.”   “That’s one of the key elements to autoimmunity. Unhealed childhood trauma. One item I expect is about Mr. Sardi’s book review of the new title, Radical Longevity: The Powerful Plan to Sharpen Your Brain, Strengthen Your Body, and Reverse the Symptoms of Aging by the first lady of nutrition, Anne Louise Gittleman, PhD, CNS.   Mr. Sardi usually gives us an update on the latest covid-19 news and this brand new article on co-infections is important. I must also ask him about his article that is a shocking but science-based rest of the story concerning that bruhaha in the media about president Trump’s alleged recommendation (actually it was just a general question) that something like bleach might be a remedy for covid-19. Watch for the May 6th blog for a review of details.

Back in May, we asked our listeners what topic we should discuss on our podcast, and the response was overwhelming: anxiety. We believe that this response is definitely a reflection of the time we’re all in, but it is also something many freelancers struggle with from time to time—both anxiety in general and social anxiety in particular. We are very grateful to our guest, Sadie Hall, for joining us in this episode and sharing her experience with managing anxiety, social anxiety, and perfectionism.Sadie is a freelance translator and editor living in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She completed an honours bachelor of arts with a specialization in French-to-English translation at the University of Ottawa from 2010 to 2012. She also speaks candidly on her blog and Instagram account about her experiences with motherhood and mental health issues, particularly recovering from social anxiety and perfectionism. She hopes that sharing her mental health journey can raise awareness and help others feel less alone, and she is planning to write a mental health memoir soon. Here is a summary of our conversation with Sadie:• How and when she started her freelance translation career• How her journey in dealing with anxiety, and social anxiety in particular, started• How she realized that anxiety was affecting her and what she did to manage this condition• What role her support system has played in the process• What social anxiety is and how it might affect someone’s work• What some of the symptoms of social anxiety are and how to know if you should talk to someone or seek help• How perfectionism can affect translators and become a contributing factor to anxiety, and, more importantly, what you can do to manage it• How to manage stress and the challenges that come with owning a freelance business• How stress and anxiety can play into the balance of family and work life and how to navigate these priorities while dealing with anxiety• What smart habits can help you manage anxiety, social anxiety, and perfectionism• Sadie’s advice to freelance translators who suspect they may be suffering from anxietyResources we mentioned in this episode:• Sadie’s Instagram account and anxiety blog• Sadie’s freelance business site• Mood tracker• Bonkers: A Real Mum's Hilariously Honest Tales of Motherhood, Mayhem and Mental Health by Olivia Siegl• The Joy of Missing Out: Live More by Doing Less by Tonya Dalton• The Genius Life: Heal Your Mind, Strengthen Your Body, and Become Extraordinary by Max LugavereWe’ll be sending our email subscribers a summary of today’s episode with a link to the show notes so you can quickly find all the resources that we mentioned today.Sadie has also kindly offered to share a free resource with our listeners.
