Hosts: Dr. Ashlee Gethner, LCSW – Child of a Police Officer Jennifer Woosley Saylor, LPCC – Child of a Cop Special Guest: Tom Rizzo – Law Enforcement Leader, Author, College Professor, Cohost of On Patrol Live In this powerful episode, Ashlee and Jennifer sit down with Tom Rizzo—law enforcement veteran, motivational speaker, author, and father of four—to explore the realities of mental health in policing, the challenges around authentic leadership, and the impacts of the profession on officers’ families. Drawing on over two decades of experience, Tom delves into organizational culture, the importance of compassion within departments, and the journey toward personal and collective wellness. Key Topics: Guest Introduction: Tom Rizzo shares his background: 24 years in law enforcement, motivational speaking, hosting On Patrol Live, and teaching as a college professor. Above all, his proudest role is being a dedicated father. The Four Walls vs. Four Corners: Tom introduces his perspective on the dangers of organizations obsessing over their public image ("four corners") while neglecting the internal health and relationships ("four walls"—including officers’ mental states). Mental Health in Policing: Tom emphasizes the need for honesty about what truly causes stress: not always the danger on the streets, but the toxic organizational environments and lack of genuine support from leadership. Leadership & Accountability: A candid discussion about how mission statements have been hijacked by politics and bureaucracy, and why transparency, humility, and resourcefulness make for better leaders. Peer Support & Trust: Ashlee explores the challenges of building trust between peer support teams and leadership. Tom spotlights the importance of administrative honesty in supporting mental health initiatives. The Ripple Effect on Families: Tom, Ashlee, and Jennifer reflect on the ways the job impacts officers’ families and the generational ripple, stressing clear communication and including loved ones in major professional decisions. A Call to Action: Tom urges listeners—especially those supporting law enforcement—to push for common sense, empathy, and advocacy, both in the workplace and in the community. "They Not Like Us: College Professors Squabble Up Over the Drake vs Kendrick Lamar ‘Diss'course" Description: In this episode of Put Em On The Couch, college professors Jason McCoy (psychology) and Nelson (political science and history) squabble up over the ongoing Drake vs Kendrick Lamar "Diss'course"—a year-long back-and-forth between two of the biggest icons in hip-hop. With nearly a dozen diss tracks thrown, Kendrick Lamar's anthem They Not Like Us has become the centerpiece of this highly charged feud. In this lively and sometimes incendiary conversation, Jason and Nelson dissect the tension between these two artists, exploring everything from Drake's shifting genre versatility and his critics' accusations of being a "culture vulture," to Kendrick's status as a lyrical genius and a hip-hop icon whose music often offers a history lesson. As the discussion heats up, the professors debate the greater sociopolitical implications of their rivalry, touching on themes of class, power, and representation in modern music. Whether you're firmly in one camp or just curious about what all the fuss is about, this episode will leave you with a deeper appreciation for hip-hop, rap, and black culture. Tune in for an academic yet passionate exploration of the ultimate Diss'course. Join the conversation! We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode. Welcome to another episode ofThe Round Table! This week, Daniella, Preena, Kassandra, Inyoo and Sauda discussed the power of story-telling, intersectional identities, the role of youth in bringing about societal change, and so much more. They spoke with Dr. Rob Carpenter, a UCLA Professor and author, who has worked in the White House, Hollywood, tech and transportation, and who is a self-described “firm believer in the power of creativity and storytelling.”The hosts learned how Dr. Rob's intersectional identity -- as a part Black, White, and Native man who grew up in a fully White household, in a predominantly Latinx neighborhood, with Jewish and Asian best-friends -- shapes his writing and allows him to empathize with many diverse groups of people. They question whether today's world lives up to Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream, share hope for the future through collective youth organizing, and even ponder how idealism grapples with reality in the possibility of creating a utopian world. Passionate for the virtue of stories over statistics in all levels of education, Dr. Rob shares how often, as early as 2nd Grade, students are “educated out of their creativity” -- teachers forced to teach to the test are unable to incorporate stories or the arts, contributing to the attendance crises across many schools. Yet the system is possible to reform if politicians are made to understand it needs changing, and on a smaller level, Dr.Rob describes how he, utilizing his curriculum freedom as a College Professor, makes sure every lesson includes reflection questions giving students the opportunity to relate their personal experiences to class-content.Asked about his suggestions to fix the educational system, Dr. Rob mentions increasing inter-subject integration, role-playing in the classroom, and teaching “from the outside in.” The conversation wraps up with hosts sharing their “why” for participating in these late-night conversations and staying involved overall, and giving their advice for the generation coming up behind them. Thank you for listening!

Chicago Police and Hate Groups with Ties to Libya. When many people think of terror groups, they think it wasn't an issue prior to 2001. They are very wrong. And in many Cities what we now refer to as terror groups got their start as organized criminal street gangs.  The interview with Yuri is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Check out the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. Chicago is a city with a long history of organized crime, which has faced numerous challenges related to street gangs. Few are aware of the international connections that some of these gangs forged, leading to a dramatic chapter in the city's law enforcement history. One of the most striking cases involves the Black P. Stones gang, which evolved into the El Rukn faction and collaborated with foreign actors, including Libya, in a plot against the United States. Retired Chicago Police Officer, Dr. James F. Pastor is our guest. The Black P. Stones: From Street Gang to Terrorist Group The Black P. Stones were founded in Chicago in the late 1950s as a street gang, but by the 1980s, they had transformed into a more dangerous organization. The gang rebranded as the El Rukn faction, adopting elements of Islamic ideology and aligning with radical causes. Their leader, a powerful and feared figure in Chicago's criminal underworld, was at the center of an infamous conspiracy that connected the gang to the Libyan government. Chicago Police and Hate Groups with Ties to Libya. The interview with Dr. James F. Pastor is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. One of their leaders is currently serving a 168-year prison sentence for a range of crimes, including murder, drug trafficking, and conspiracy to commit terrorist acts on behalf of Libya. The El Rukn faction even established its headquarters at a temple on South Drexel Avenue, where members plotted and carried out their activities. Libya's Role: A Shocking Conspiracy In the mid-1980s, the El Rukns entered into a conspiracy with the Libyan government, led at the time by Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi. Libya, hostile toward the United States, sought to orchestrate attacks on American soil but lacked the means to do so. The El Rukns, eager to gain more power and resources, agreed to carry out attacks in exchange for $2.5 million and weapons. What began as a street gang's quest for influence had escalated into a dangerous international terror plot. Keep informed by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media platforms. The FBI, working closely with the Chicago Police Department, uncovered the conspiracy through extensive surveillance and undercover operations. Although their leader was incarcerated for drug-related crimes, investigators discovered that he continued to direct the group's activities from prison. El Rukn members met with Libyan representatives in Panama to solidify the plot, which included plans to obtain military-grade weapons and explosives. Law Enforcement's Response: A Historic Investigation The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) and Chicago Police Department played crucial roles in dismantling the El Rukn-Libya connection. Chicago law enforcement also took decisive action to prevent the group from carrying out its plans. In 1986, a raid on the group's headquarters resulted in the seizure of multiple weapons, including hand grenades. By 1987, a 50-count indictment was filed against five key El Rukn members, and they were convicted of conspiring to commit terrorist acts on behalf of a foreign government. Chicago Police and Hate Groups with Ties to Libya. Listen to this interview as a free podcast on our website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. These convictions were historic, marking the first time American citizens had been convicted of plotting terrorist acts for a foreign government. The El Rukn case revealed just how far-reaching the influence of hate groups and criminal organizations could be, even from behind bars. The Role of Chicago Police and Dr. James F. Pastor One of the key figures involved in dismantling the El Rukn conspiracy was retired Chicago Police Officer James F. Pastor. Pastor, who had been investigating gangs in the 1980s, played an instrumental role in uncovering the group's ties to Libya. His involvement highlighted the complexities of policing in a city like Chicago, where local crime and international threats can become dangerously intertwined. Pastor got his Doctorate degree, became a Lawyer and a College Professor. He went on to become an expert in public safety, writing several books on terrorism, policing, and security. His experience, from working the streets of Chicago to tackling global threats, offers valuable insights into the challenges law enforcement faces in an increasingly interconnected world. Chicago Police and Hate Groups with Ties to Libya. Stay in the know by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media platforms. Social Media: A New Frontier for Extremist Groups In today's digital age, the threat posed by hate groups has evolved, with platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn becoming hubs for extremist ideologies and criminal networks. These platforms allow such groups to communicate, recruit, and plan illicit activities under the radar, making it harder for law enforcement to track and disrupt their operations. Tech companies are now working to address these concerns. Many of them are reportedly removing hate-related content. Check platforms like Newsbreak and Medium, Apple Podcasts and Spotify in addition to the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast for critical information about exposing such groups, shining a light on the dangerous undercurrents of hate and terrorism that exist online. Vigilance is Key: Learning from Chicago's Past The El Rukn conspiracy is a reminder of how local crime can escalate into global threats. Chicago law enforcement and federal agencies successfully thwarted a potentially devastating attack, but the danger of hate groups and their connections to international actors remains a pressing issue today. As hate groups continue to evolve and leverage new technologies, law enforcement must remain vigilant. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn must also continue to work closely with authorities to monitor and mitigate the spread of extremist content. As the lines between local crime and global threats blur, lessons from Chicago's past remain more relevant than ever. The collaboration between street gangs and foreign governments is a stark reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous alliances that can form, threatening national security. Chicago Police and Hate Groups with Ties to Libya. The conversation is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio how and Podcast website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The El Rukn case serves as a testament to the importance of coordinated efforts between local law enforcement, federal agencies, and tech companies in combating both traditional and digital forms of crime and terrorism. Laughter as Medicine: Conquering Stress with Professor Pete Alexander On this episode of Make Mental Health Matter, Kelli laughs with Professor Pete Alexander. During his 35+ year career he has had the privilege to work in a variety of positions including Sales, Marketing, College Professor and Small Business Owner. Each role had one thing in common - high stress - to the point he was diagnosed with stress-related diabetes and ended up in the hospital with a severe case of diabetic ketoacidosis, a few hours away from being comatose. It was a reality check for him. When you don't have your health, not much else matters. He knew it was time for him to walk away even though he had a great job, secure income, and good benefits. Interestingly, his coworkers and peers were very supportive and most of them told him they admired his decision to put his health first before his career because they were contemplating the same thing. He realized then that it wasn't just him, and now he helps other hard-driving leaders avoid my mistakes and immensely benefit from the wonderful tools and techniques he has learned and experienced first-hand. In addition to a video series, he launched a book on Amazon, which became an international bestseller. He has also been a popular guest on many podcasts and radio shows, and was selected as a TEDx speaker. He is also a professional hiking tour leader, a certified Laughter Yoga teacher and improv comedy cast member, where he enjoys bringing laughter to his community. Professor Pete Alexander is the President of the greatest interior landscaping company in the San Francisco Bay Area - Office Plants by Everything Grows. In addition, he has served as an adjunct college professor for several universities, where he helped inspire thousands of students to develop and apply key concepts of marketing specifically to their area of interest. Blunt Business speaks with Connie Pechmann, professor of marketing with UC Irvine's Paul Merage School of Business and an expert in consumer behavior. She is the lead author of a paper that published in Addiction about research that focuses specifically on the California cannabis retail market, examining purchasing trends and product preferences among young adults (age 21-24) in comparison to older adults (age 25+) from 2018-2021.Connie shared that the University of California, Irvine, has a long-standing center for research in cannabis, and she wanted to reach a broader audience by publishing her findings in Addiction. She also revealed that her research was funded by a grant from the Bureau of Cannabis Control in California, which allowed her team to obtain data from retailers without having to purchase cannabis for research purposes.Connie also discussed the analysis of a large dataset on retail sales, focusing on the purchasing patterns of customers with loyalty cards. They noted that this approach allowed them to study legal sales without the complications of obtaining permission to use products on human subjects. They also touched on the issue of obtaining products for research due to legal restrictions, with Connie clarifying that their campus does not cultivate cannabis. The conversation then shifted to the research conducted on the effects of cannabidiol and THC on driving performance, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and stress responses among older adults.Connie also discussed the challenges and progress of research on cannabis. Connie explained that while research papers are published in journals as soon as possible, studies involving human subjects are facing delays due to bureaucratic hurdles and the need for extensive oversight.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Pa. professors weigh in on how college professors know you are cheating with A.I.

Artificial Intelligence also known as A.I. for short is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions, including the ability to see, understand and translate spoke and written language, analyze data, and make recommendations and more according to google cloud. Many professions are utilizing this tool, and colleges are integrating it into their courseloads this fall. Professor Carrie Sipes is the Department Chair and Professor of the Communications, Journalism, and Media Department at Shippensburg University. She encourages her students to use A.I. “I love encouraging students to use AI during their brainstorming sessions of their projects, right? It can really streamline ideas. It can give you more ideas to consider. So if you put in a prompt and an AI software, you can come up with a lot of ideas for a project. And then you could use your brain to build out 1 or 2 of those ideas, to see which one is the one that you think is the best choice for you at this time.” Jeff Ritchie is the Chair and Professor of Design, Media, and Technology at Lebanon Valley College. Ritchie says although it could be helpful, it could be utilized in an unethical manner. “It also can be used to cheat and to misrepresent, as your own thought something. So again, I think is carried spoke to before. You know, a lot of our existing laws and practices are predicated on technologies. You know, the printing press brought about the idea of intellectual property rights. I don't know what these laws will look like, when AI is there, you know, do we share ownership or, you know, so much is up in the air right now about how we will decide to proceed, with these legal, ethical and just policy-based decisions.” Professor Sipes teaches a course called Digital Tools, and A.I. related tools for photography and videography will be among the courseload. “But it's more for a creative the creative process and creative outcomes for the work that they'll create in that course. Certainly, there's lots of conversations about, like I mentioned earlier, you know, what is plagiarism? What it you know, when it comes to AI, what is you know, if you're going to turn in work that's used AI, what's required for you to to do that in order to not, you know, fall into the plagiarism category or, have high scores on, ChatGPT or GPT zero, etc.. Kind of scan of work.” However, even if A.I. is used to cheat on assignments, Professor Sipes says professors can always tell if the student has used A.I. to write an entire assignment.   “You can you can tell almost immediately by reading the first few sentences, if it's using words that people just don't use, it's it doesn't have that human element to it, even though it's based on, you know, the algorithms that are pulling all of this content together. So, we're definitely having conversations like that with students that I would rather see you as student submit work that has some errors in it. You're 18, 19, 20 years old. Like, that's what we're expecting to see. We're not expecting to see error free. But we also want it to see that we want you to show that human personality that you have. And so I think emphasizing those kinds of things and, and letting students know, like, look, we're watching for these things too, and we want you to use these things in an ethical way is, is a conversation we have pretty regularly.”  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To hear more, visit www.public.newsFor decades, universities, corporations, and nonprofit organizations have argued that they need diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs to create positive work and educational environments. The idea has been that training employees, students, and faculty to see structural racism and white supremacy everywhere will improve relationships. And yet, nothing that employers and universities have done in the last several decades has proven more toxic, divisive, and dispiriting than DEI. Dozens, if not hundreds of individuals have gone public to describe the cult-like mistreatment of people who refused to accept the DEI dogma that white supremacy is all-pervasive, that non-whites are inherently victims of oppression, and only whites and Asians, not blacks and Latinos, can be racist.

And serving as an elected official is a team sport that involves your entire family. What are the driving issues that caused you to run for Mayor of Avondale? -My three tenets are Community, Education, and Small Business. 2) The race you are in is non-partisan, yet we find ourselves in a time in history when political party ideologies are deeply ingrained in the decisions that elected officials make. How do you navigate these issues? -Leadership matters, and decision-making as a Mayor requires experience, skill and collaborative relationships. Through my many years of serving on City Council and as Vice Mayor, particularly in the West Valley area where several small cities work closely together on important issues have given me multitudes of opportunities and examples (both good and bad) of how decisions impact the community. 3) Your professional experience as a College Professor and Business Program Director, as well as having owned a REO Foreclosure Properties Real Estate firm gives you a unique perspective on how to grow and develop the city.
