It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today's podcast, I talked about the Oilers year in review, Andrew Mangiapane trade rumours, Calvin Pickard, Connor McDavid's heater, and much more.I kicked off this week's episode with a look at the Andrew Mangiapane trade rumours that kicked off this past week. Given that we haven't even made it to the midway point of his first season as an Oiler, it's hard to understand why these UFA veterans keep going sideways once they land in Edmonton. Is it a role thing? Is it too hard to play with Connor or Leon? I also spent some time on Calvin Pickard's incredible showing against the Winnipeg Jets, and gave the Oilers' backup plenty of love for stepping up when the team needed him. Is our pal Cal doing enough to save his Oilers career? Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quiet again this week, but everyone's takes were still all over the map and very fun to listen to. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. Having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better.Want to leave a voicemail for next week's show? Do it here!

What was it that William Munny said in Unforgiven? “Deserve's got nothing to do with it.” That line summed up the feeling following Saturday's frustrating 4-3 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild. A missed penalty on a hit from behind by Joel Eriksson Ek on Josh Morrissey led to a retaliation cross-check call on Dylan DeMelo, wiping out what would have been an empty-net goal. Instead, Minnesota capitalized on a 6-on-4 advantage, scoring with just 22 seconds remaining before Matt Boldy ended it 39 seconds into overtime. Ugh. The most maddening part? The Jets actually played well. So what gives? Cam & Jim break down what went wrong, what still looked encouraging, and whether Winnipeg's recent stretch of close losses means progress is coming—or if it's just more of the same. The Jets have now dropped five straight games, all by a single goal. Is that a sign things are finally turning, or simply another cruel tease? The guys also look ahead to Monday night's showdown at Canada Life Centre against Connor McDavid and the red-hot Edmonton Oilers. CHED's Brenden Escott joins to take a better look at where the Oilers are headed, as they try to reach the Stanley Cup Final for a third straight time. It's a deep dive, plenty of frustration, and no shortage of opinion—on another episode of Jets @ Noon. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A rough Monday night raised player-safety and Olympic concerns, starting with Brandon Hagel’s injury from a forearm to the head by Seth Jones—a play that drew no supplemental discipline, frustrating Tampa Bay and leaving Ray concerned about the message it sends and future tensions. In Dallas, Team Canada hopeful Darcy Kuemper exited after being clipped by Mikko Rantanen in what most saw as a hockey play with an unfortunate result. Vancouver stunned the league by trading Quinn Hughes to Minnesota in a rare in-season blockbuster, choosing the youngest package—effectively four first-round assets—signalling a clear youth-driven re-tool and prompting a subtle jab from Hughes toward New Jersey. Edmonton also made waves, moving Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak to Pittsburgh for Tristan Jarry, change for change sake perhaps, as Ray doesn't feel this provides real stability in goal, though Jarry has improved since time in the minors. Finally, Toronto remains a puzzle: sloppy play and an inability to handle pace—exposed again against an all-world Connor McDavid—highlight the Leafs’ need for a scoring winger amid tight cap constraints and asset management. Plus, in Ask Ray & Dregs Anything: the Hughes haul, Central Division predictions and more!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Quinn Hughes saga is over, and once again he is not joining the Detroit Red Wings. On a happier note, we open by recapping Detroit's last two games of their road trip, including a tough loss to an unreal Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers (including Simon Edvinsson scoring after suiting up unexpectedly) (5:20), before jumping into the Red Wings and their dominant win over the Connor Bedard-less Chicago Blackhawks, including Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat putting on a show, Emmitt Finnie benefitting from Axel Sandin-Pellikka's offensive moves, another John Gibson shutout, and lots more (8:45). After that, a discussion on DeBrincat's star season as he's been on fire alongside "Showtime" Patrick Kane and Andrew Copp, providing strong scoring support behind Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond on the 1st line, as well as John Gibson's recent strong streak over the past 5 games, what it could mean for the Detroit Red Wings and their playoff chances, the upcoming month of December, & plenty more (15:50). Next, Quinn Hughes being traded to the Minnesota wild for Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, a 2026 1st round pick, and Zeev Buium: our analysis on the deal, the risk Bill Guerin is taking, how Jim Rutherford did compared to expectations, Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings missing out on adding Quinn Hughes to Moritz Seider's side, what the equivalent deal may have been, and whether it would've been worth giving up Simon Edvinsson, Nate Danielson or Marco Kasper, Carter Bear, and maybe more in the trade (28:15). Finally, our thoughts on the Skinner for Jarry trade in Edmonton, and how this affects McDavid & Draisaitl's Cup chances (57:25). All of that & lots more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (1:07:15) - enjoy! Let's do this! The Cult of Hockey podcast. By the Faithful and for the Faithful. Today Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal digs into the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 win over the Red Wings of Buffalo Game Overview: The Oilers celebrated a satisfying victory, with the team showcasing a solid performance against the Detroit Red Wings. David and Kurt noted that the game felt secure once the Oilers netted their third goal, with the team effectively shutting down any potential threats from their opponents. The hosts emphasized the importance of managing fatigue, especially during back-to-back games, which can significantly affect player performance. Zach Hyman's Comeback: One of the standout performances in the game came from Zach Hyman, who scored a hat trick. Kurt pointed out that Hyman's recent struggles stemmed from a wrist injury sustained during the playoffs last year, which raised concerns about his ability to return to form. However, his performance in this game suggested that he might be regaining his previous prowess. David recalled a moment from a prior game where Hyman demonstrated improved wrist strength, hinting that he could be back to his old self. Hyman's contributions are crucial for the Oilers, especially as the team looks to enhance its scoring depth. The Importance of Team Dynamics: David and Kurt highlighted the synergy between Hyman, Connor McDavid, and Leon Draisaitl, noting how their on-ice chemistry resulted in beautiful plays. One example discussed was Hyman's first goal, which was set up by a remarkable pass from McDavid, demonstrating the patience and vision that elite players possess. This discussion underscored the significance of teamwork and communication in achieving success on the ice. Evan Bouchard's Performance: The podcast also touched on Evan Bouchard's contributions and the criticisms he faces regarding his defensive skills. While both hosts acknowledged his offensive talent, they agreed that Bouchard needs to improve his defensive play, particularly during crucial moments. David recounted a story from Gary Galley about Ray Bourque, emphasizing that great players often take risks to make exceptional plays, which can lead to turnovers. This analogy served to frame the discussion about Bouchard, suggesting that while he may have defensive lapses, his offensive capabilities are invaluable. Conclusion: The Oilers' recent victory showcased not only individual brilliance but also the importance of teamwork and resilience. Zach Hyman's return to form is a promising sign for the team, as is the continued excellence of McDavid and Draisaitl. Additionally, while Bouchard's defensive play may need refinement, his offensive contributions are vital for the team's success. As the season progresses, monitoring these players' performances will be crucial for the Oilers' aspirations.
