You do not have the ability to present with the normal signs and symptoms of infection. You're not going to have redness and swelling and drainage. You're going to have more fever, hypertension, dysuria, shortness of breath, or cough.” Timestamp (TS) 07:22 “Some patients get really nervous if their blood counts get to a certain point. I find that we just try to explain to them, ‘We're watching your labs very frequently, we see you several times a week, these are the complications that can happen,' and talk them through the rationale for not giving a lot of maybe not necessary transfusions.” TS 15:15 “In general, the guidelines are if you expect a patient to have severe prolonged neutropenia, lasting greater than seven days, then you would want to consider giving them an antibiotic to help prevent neutropenic fever. . . . A high-risk patient would benefit from that.” TS 17:23 “Myelosuppression can delay chemotherapy, so patients who are getting treatment for their cancer may experience delays in their next cycle, they may have dose reduction, they may have to discontinue that chemotherapy if they have severe myelosuppression. That could affect their outcomes as far as their cancer treatment goes. Patients who are anemic—if you are fatigued and your legs feel heavy and you feel dizzy when you get up and you fall and your platelets are low as well, that leads to an increased risk of bleeding, and really a decrease in quality of life.” TS 23:30 “Myelosuppresion and cancer treatment in general does carry other toxicities besides the physical: emotional, mental, financial, and social.” TS 25:33 “For a patient with cancer, from diagnosis on, there's a lot that they can't control. When you're faced with that diagnosis, you want to really try to work to make that patient an active part of their care team. So, I think it's important to talk with a patient—understand that there are things out of their control, but there are things that are within their control. You can teach them how to manage fatigue associated with anemia or how to prevent falls. These are the things you can do to prevent infection; these are the nutrition things you should focus on to help you feel your best. Anything that you can let the patient have control over because their life has just changed dramatically.” TS 29:03 “Oncology nurses are wonderful at looking at the patient as a whole person. Keep in mind that there are financial toxicities as well as physical, emotional, and mental. So, it might create a bigger team of people that need to step in and help the patient find the resources that they need to be successful. Also, don't forget about the caregivers.” TS 33:47

Welcome to the debut episode of the Spotlight Lipedema Podcast. I can't describe how excited I am to get this podcast finally started. It has been long in the making. I've been rolling ideas around in my head for well over a year, but finally got things together, and with the help of my wonderful producer Chris Duckett, was able to get this episode done and the podcast officially launched. Hopefully, this is just the first of many, many more to come.On this episode I'm going to give a quick introduction to lipedema for any listeners that may be unfamiliar with it or who've been recently diagnosed. That will be just a baseline for what will become my story - how I have dealt with being fat for most of my life, and how I came to be diagnosed. How I'm living with lipedema will be saved for future episodes. Also in future episodes, we'll get into more detail about lipedema and hear the stories of people with different stages and types lipedema and at different ages. I think you'll find that we have lots of similarities in our stories, but what we can really learn from is how our experiences have varied.Like everyone diagnosed with lipedema, I've had to learn a lot about what it is, what it isn't, and how to deal with it. Welcome to Season 2, podcast #6 in a series which is about how to lead our lives from the inside out - instead of living tossed around by emotions or circumstances. The secret to making this happen is all in the way we think about ourselves, how we think about the pieces of our personality, our centered inner self - and where we go to find power to make things better when we need help. The mental framework being discussed views humans as being made up of an Inner/Core Self and many Parts (or sub-personalities). We have parts of us who operate like managers (running the show), firefighters (who numb and distract us) and child-like exiles, who are buried underneath the surface due to shame, fear, guilt, sadness or anger. The managers and firefighters are called protectors, because they are busy trying to prevent emotional distress (the managers ) or they help eliminate emotional distress once it has occurred (these are the firefighters). Finally, emotional distress can exist in any of our parts in the form of burdens, which are extreme beliefs, thoughts, feelings or sensations. Just like we can't operate and remove a part of our body without it affecting other areas of our body - when we heal or address emotional pain in one part, it effects other parts of our system as well. This podcast talks specifically about the relationship between our Manager and Firefighter parts. How do these personalities within us relate to each other, and how does that effect how we move them from their extreme roles into healthy, cooperative roles connected to our Inner self? You can find me on FB. Episode 2.4 teaches us more about our internal parts - specifically, our "protectors". These parts are called protectors because just like Superman, Scarface, Dirty Harry, or the Terminator…. We have parts which can act like each one of these characters… well, at least I do…Protector parts have a goal of hiding our vulnerabilities, our soft spots, and making sure we don't get hurt or that we don't spend our days stuck in overwhelming feelings. There are two key types of protector roles, and everyone has both types of protector parts within them. This episode walks through them both (managers and firefighters). I'll explain how to recognize them, what they want for us or their intentions, and how we can work with them. Working with our protectors from our inner selves with the Spirit of God, will change the way we think, act and feel in our daily lives. If this is resonating with you, if you'd like to learn more.... I'd love to have a free discovery call with you. Fear, guilt, shame, bitterness, and regret. Five deadly emotions that will lie to you about your identity, sink daggers of despair into your heart, and sabotage your relationships and your potential in life. What do most people do about the lingering effects of those five emotions in their lives? At least on my end, I surpassed them until it was too painful to do so any longer. And that wasn’t a good choice. Men and women all over the country unknowingly make decisions from a false identity created by fear, guilt, or shame. But they don’t know they’re doing it. So life sort of flat-lines and they think it’s just the way things are supposed to end-up. What if there was a way to reach way down to the root of those emotions, set healthy boundaries for our soul, and instead, change the trajectory of our lives simply by a change of heart? I believe it’s possible. Joining us today is Kimberly Miller. She’s the co-author of the brand-new book, Boundaries for Your Soul: How to Turn Your Overwhelming Thoughts and Feelings into Your Greatest Allies, and she’s going to guide you through a five-step process to transform these liabilities into powerful strengths. Buy the Book What if feelings like anger, sadness, and fear could improve your life for the better? In this practical, life-changing book, Christian counselors Alison Cook and Kimberly Miller describe their unique five-step process for bringing peace to overwhelming emotions and harmony to your inner world. Do you ever struggle to calm your competing internal "enemies"? Boundaries for Your Soul provides a Spirit-based plan for creating remarkable serenity within by helping you recognize that these often-overwhelming emotions are not your enemies; rather, they are helpers who have gone well beyond their roles, robbing you of deep-down joy and genuine connection with others. By compassionately guiding them to their proper functions, however, you can make them your greatest encouragers and allies. In Boundaries for Your Soul: How to Turn Your Overwhelming Thoughts and Feelings into Your Greatest Allies, Cook and Miller guide you through a five-step process for doing so, showing you how to introduce the Holy Spirit to your wayward emotions and transform your weaknesses into powerful strengths. Filled with anecdotes and wisdom from the authors' combined 25 years of study and clinical practice, Boundaries for the Soul leads listeners on a journey of personal discovery grounded in the Christian tradition. Additional helps include exercises and opportunities for personal reflection. Buy Boundaries for Your Soul: How to Turn Your Overwhelming Thoughts and Feelings into Your Greatest Allies now.
