The UK Digital Twin Centre has officially opened in Belfast, marking a major milestone in the UK's digital innovation landscape. Delivered by Digital Catapult and funded by the Belfast Region City Deal and Innovate UK, the project is set to drive the next wave of industrial transformation by accelerating the adoption of digital twin technology across the UK's critical sectors, projected to reach £62million in GVA for the economy over the next decade. A Digital Twin is a dynamic virtual representation ('twin') of a physical asset, process, or system, bridging the physical and digital worlds. They turn data into real-time insights that can optimise performance, reduce costs, and predict outcomes before they happen. Since funding for the project was announced, Digital Catapult has brought together industry and innovators to identify adoption barriers and strategic interventions. At the Centre's opening, the project's co-investing industry partners - Artemis Technologies, Spirit AeroSystems, and Thales UK - utilised the cutting-edge facilities, including the 360-degree immersive space and advanced technology lab, to demonstrate how digital twins are helping to solve complex operational challenges. These early-stage use cases emphasise the power of cross-sector collaboration to create scalable, practical solutions while building expertise that can be shared across industries, ultimately improving product design, building supply chain resilience, and decarbonising operations. Programmes delivered by the UK Digital Twin Centre will help businesses across the UK to demystify, demonstrate, and deploy digital twins. With expert support, test environments and tools to experiment and validate, combined with shared learnings from industry use cases, it offers a practical route to adoption. The Centre has convened capabilities across digital twins six enabling technology areas - intelligence, data services, immersive and UX, cyber-physical systems, integration, and security - to make this emerging technology more accessible and interoperable across sectors and suppliers. "The UK Digital Twin Centre marks a major step for Belfast, driving innovation in high-growth sectors like advanced manufacturing," said the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray. "Through the Belfast Region City Deal and with Digital Catapult's UK-wide reach, we're connecting our SMEs to a powerful network, unlocking access to new markets, collaboration opportunities, and cutting-edge technologies. This will boost local businesses, create high-skilled jobs, and drive real economic impact for the region." The Centre's first six-month Accelerator Programme, now open for pre-application expressions of interest, will support partnerships between tech SMEs and industry to fast-track digital twin adoption in maritime, aerospace, and defence. Alongside Innovate UK funding, participants will also gain access to mentorship, workshops, and specialist support to develop proofs of concept for enabling technologies - such as IoT, data integration, and simulation tools - bringing their solutions closer to real-world deployment. "The UK Digital Twin Centre brings together our technical expertise, facilities, and networks to unlock the power of deep technologies,' said Susan Bowen, CEO of Digital Catapult. "By connecting industries with cutting-edge technology through our programmes, we are enabling businesses to harness the full potential of digital twins-driving operational efficiencies, advancing sustainability, and sharpening the competitive edge of UK businesses." Dean Cook, Executive Director for Place and Global?at Innovate UK, added, "Seeing real-world use cases coming to life at the UK Digital Twin Centre is a powerful demonstration of how digital twins can deliver tangible advances for UK industry. These cutting-edge tools will solve complex business challenges in aerospace, maritime, and defence. "It's a testament to how we are leveraging the strengths of local inno...

On today's episode, Ian discusses the first flight to travel from London to New York powered only by plant-based fuel, such as cooking oil.He also talks to Dr Jeremy Silver, Chief Executive of Digital Catapult, about deep tech. And speaks to Guy Ellison, Head of Listed Equities at Investec Wealth and Investment about three major US stock indexes being on track for the best monthly performances in more than a year.
Het duurde even voordat Elmer zelf de relevantie ervan doorhad, maar de essentie is de quote: "The details are not the details, they make the design".
Dr John Collins worked for the UK's Central Electricity Generating Board in the days when such things were nationalised industries. His PhD involved creating a real-time dosimeter for workers in nuclear plants so they didn't have to wait 2 weeks to learn the results of the film-based dosimeters that were in use. In doing so, he saved the CEGB considerable amounts of money - and, mere importantly, saved the lives and health of the men and women who worked there. Thus began a lifetime working at the leading edge of business where innovation meets ethics and morality so that now, he is the Ethics and Responsible Innovation Advisor at Machine Intelligence Garage and on the Ethics Advisory Board at Digital Catapult. He's writing a book called 'A History of the Future in Seven Words.' With all this, he's an ideal person to open up the worlds of business, innovation and technology. In a wide-ranging, sparky, fun conversation, we explore what might make AI safe, how a future might look with sustainable business, whether 1.5 is 'still alive' and if that's even a useful metric - and how much power does it take to post an Instagram picture compared to making a plastic bottle (spoiler alert: it's the same power and the same CO2 generated - assuming both use the same power source and *if* the image is stored for 100 years... which the way we're going, might not happen. But still... ). John on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjohnlcollins/Digital Catapult https://www.digicatapult.org.uk/

This episode has been recorded in May 2020, at the beginning of pandemic, when I engaged in conversation with the disruptive technologist John Collins, founder of Innovation Foundry, a company which support business and individuals to identify new technology trends and create opportunities for collaborative innovation.John has a fast and exceptional intelligence, he is PhD in Nuclear Physics and microelectronics besides having a passion for dance performances, theatre and cultural events, where you would probably meet him when he is not working.Today I let you enter right in the mist of our conversation, which started talking about vibrating materials, sound waves and vibrating bodies. About the conversation:We talked about bodies as mass of photons, vibrations of sound and light are absorbed into the environment, they transform but do not disappear. We are all connected with some wave form and are connected to environments and animals like a huge microchip and doing less as human beings is necessary now. We need to take into consideration the feedback from the planet to increase the design of how we operate, being more constructive about how we use resources on the earth, to balance the process of taking and giving back to earth. Then the question is: how can we interfere constructively in the environment?I was struck by his sentence: 'data is the new plastic'. The amount of energy involved in shooting and editing a IG picture is equal as the energy involved in creating a plastic bottle. We started to imagine a software that could recycle data back to electricity, to balance the production of data everyone is responsible for.We talked about Cybernomics (cryptocurrencies and how much energy is involved in exchanging and creating them), remote working and the use of resources used during the lockdown period. Electricity and power utilised to be in a Zoom calls are overstimulating the system, the amount of resources we are utilising is unbalanced compared to the resources we return to the earth.Lockdown and the distancing has created a sort of geometrical order in the world, less people spread apart, ordered in space like a crystal lattice: the geometry of it, goes towards order, low energy state can be seen as a new hyper normal. If we go on this way, by 2050 half of the energy of the world will be used on streaming if we go at the current rate. What are the ethical considerations of streamed events and compulsive usage of data?********************************************************************************************To support the podcast and become a supporter of danceoutsidedance you can submit at:https://www.patreon.com/danceoutsidedancehttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/danceoutsidedanceBIO:Until recently John was Operations & Commercial Director of the UK National Centre for commercialising Engineering Biology - SynbiCITE - at Imperial College London. Arctic AI Have you checked the ice-cap forecast? Melting sea ice might be a well-known symptom of global warming, but how do scientists predict how quickly ice will recede? A new Artificial Intelligence tool does a better job than traditional prediction methods to forecast whether sea ice in the arctic will be present two months in advance. We hear from Tom Andresson, Data Scientist at the BAS AI Lab, who developed the algorithm. VR Cystoscopy Cystoscopy is vital for managing bladder cancer and something that those affected will need to undergo regularly for the rest of their life when their cancer has gone into remission. However the process can be very unpleasant which means some people choose not to keep up with their life saving visits. Dr Wojciech Krajewski has been studying how using VR goggles to create a more relaxed environment can help patients manage the pain cystoscopy causes. Immersing patients in an Icelandic waterfall meant patients reported lower pain scores and they tolerated the procedure better. 5G festival Working remotely has been a difficulty for many of us over the past year - but musicians have found it particularly hard, as slow connections make playing together almost impossible. The architecture, engineering and construction industry is not using data to its full advantage. How can we ease the “fear” of data in facilities managers and contractors? This discussion brings in tech experts alongside Buro Happold's engineers to examine why data is not being used fully across all the stages of a project. What are the barriers that stop clients and engineers embracing data at every stage, from planning to post-construction? What else can we do to help clients understand the business benefits and value augmentation that data brings? Eduardo Bayod, head of London office at Fide Partners and Steven Wood, senior commercial manager at Digital Catapult join Buro Happold colleagues Irfan Soneji, Tom Hopton and Phil Proctor in finding some answers.
Unpredictable variables throughout the manufacturing life cycle can cause a huge drain on productivity and waste. Understanding the impact of these changes helps food and drink manufacturers decide on the best intervention - before it’s too late. But with today’s technology, more connected supply chain and industry collaboration – there is light at the end of the tunnel. If every manufacturer were able to predict and control variability to intervene before it’s too late, the transformation could be huge. In this episode, in partnership with Siemens, we look at the challenges facing the food and drink industry when trying to manage variability, what pinch points affect businesses and how these can be resolved through tech. Joining our panel for this fascinating debate are Siemens, Speedibake, Raynor Foods, Polestar Interactive and Digital Catapult. Rob is the lead technologist and blockchain DLT at Digital Catapult A Trained medical doctor, Robert worked in the NHS for 6-years. He really enjoyed the role but always had a desire to ‘invent stuff’. So he went back to university to study a degree that would allow him to do that. Robert first took an interest in blockchain whilst doing his Ph.D and the bitcoin phenomenon exploded in 2012. He knew then Bitcoin was something he needed to be part of. In that time he also co-founded the research center for cryptocurrency research & engineering at Imperial College. After this Rob moved out of the research world and into Digital Catapult so he could make a broader economic impact on society. Rob’s driving force is discussing and understanding where blockchain technology is heading and where can it be applied to make a real impact.

“Currently all of my projects are based on results and output, what I deliver, rather than the hours I work, which is great but I do think, how can that translate into every industry? I have no idea but it is the way we are going." This interview is from a series of events, blogs and discussions around The Future of Work. We're thinking about what work is, and what we need it to be; how business and enterprise will be continue to be re-structured in the digital age; about a realignment of power and decision-making in employment; and how people are thinking differently about the purpose and placement of work in their lives. In this podcast, Richard Freeman has a chat with Samantha Harland about the changing sands of self-employment; of women and leadership and of attitudes towards flexible working. Samantha Harland is a specialist in business development and growth, with experience that spans corporate brands, cutting-edge technology and coaching for micro-businesses and start-ups from all sectors. Sam is a passionate advocate about rethinking the future of work and helping organisations to innovate, supporting individuals as well as businesses to turn their ideas into tangible business plans. She holds a degree in Organisational Development started her career in accounts, innovations and insights management at global organisations such as Diageo, Unilever and Tesco. More recently, Sam ran an Entrepreneur Start-Up Accelerator on behalf of NatWest and is now a business advisor, workshop facilitator and coach, working on technological and structural innovation with utility companies, the built environment and on the UK's first 5G business accelerator programme in partnership with the Digital Catapult - amongst others. Richard and Sam spoke at the end of March 2019 about the starting points for businesses who want to do things differently in the 21st century, the life of a freelancer and whether Brexit is holding people back. --- Useful links: Samantha Harland Twitter @SamanthaHarland The Hoxby Collective https://hoxby.com/ @hoxbycollective Entrepreneurial Spark https://www.entrepreneurial-spark.com/ The Future Of Work event (run by Samantha in March 2019) https://www.facebook.com/events/68-middle-st/the-future-of-work-part-of-the-spring-forward-festival/364873624344757/ Digital Catapult (5G testbed) https://www.digicatapult.org.uk/ Wired Sussex https://www.wiredsussex.com/ --- What did you think of Sam's perspective on female entrepreneurs, on flexible working and on business mindset? Virtual reality (VR) and 360 video are the new cool kids on the media block but how will this impact media organisations? Over the past couple of years, projects have been produced on a wide range of subjects, such as Notes on blindness, The Arctic and even one filmed from the International Space Station. The BBC has produced its own VR content too. There's no doubt that VR and 360 both give the user something extra, taking them somewhere they couldn't go in real life and providing an 'experience' rather than just something to watch. So how should media organisations approach the challenge in terms of creativity, production and distribution? "You have to be prepared to hand over control to your viewers which has implications for how we report on TV."– Zillah Watson In this podcast you will learn: - the difference between VR and 360 video - how broadcasters are currently using VR and 360 - how other industries are using VR and 360 - what's augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) - will there be a killer app? Zillah Watson, from BBC Research & Development, is an editor who's been responsible for a number of VR projects at the BBC. She wrote a recent report for the Reuters Institute on VR and 360 in news organisations. Si Lumb is a senior product manager for BBC's Research & Development Future Experiences team. Rebecca Gregory-Clarke is the lead technologist for immersive technology at Digital Catapult, a government-backed agency that promotes technological development in the UK.
