During the 1990's, a sports phenomenon took hold in South Louisiana that was impressive yet unexpected. In the part of the country where football is king and the other sports are fighting for relevance, the sport of hockey fired the imaginations of passionate sports fans in the heart of Cajun Country. Host and native of South Louisiana Dana Auguster is joined in this episode by longtime friend and six year ticket holder of the Louisiana Ice Gators Shane DeRouen. They will remember and reminisce about time hockey and not football, was the most popular sport in an area that was not known for pucks. Later in the show we will send a shout out to former hall of fame head coach of the then San Diego Chargers, Don Coryell. The very day that he was hired, Sept 25, 1978 was both the best day in the sports history of San Diego California but also the darkest day that city's history. That and more on this episode of the Historically Speaking Sports Podcast, a member of the Sports History Network. Please don't forget to like and subscribe to the show. When we think about innovative teams that have shaped the way offense is played in the NFL today, one of the first that comes to mind is the Bill Walsh-era San Francisco 49ers. However, there's another trailblazing team from the same era that has arguably had just as big an impact on the sport. Today, we tell the story of the high-flying, but somewhat forgotten San Diego Chargers of the late 1970s and 80s, led by a brash quarterback (Dan Fouts) and visionary coach (Don Coryell). Plus, the stories of drug-fueled performances — and a mysterious gunshot wound — that still follow the team today. Don Coryell changed the way offenses were played and is one of the 5 most innovative coaches in the history of Pro Football. His induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is long overdue and took place this weekend. What he did at San Diego State and then with the Cardinals was change the way football was played. The man who helped develop the power-I for John McKay as an assistant at Southern Cal ditched the game's conservative 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust approach and dragged the rest of the football world kicking and screaming into a new era where the pass became the thing. Most known for his Air Coryell offenses in San Diego, his legacy goes way back before that. We take you behind the scenes into one of the greatest minds in Pro Football History. Today's guest on the Mushroom Society Series on the Coach and Coordinator Podcast is with retired NFL Coach Al Saunders. Coach Saunders began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at USC under John McKay from 1970–71 and served as receivers coach for the University of Missouri's Fiesta Bowl team in 1972. Saunders spent 1973 through 1975 as a play-caller and offensive backfield coach at Utah State. He then spent six seasons as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at the University of California. He guided the Golden Bears to set 32 NCAA, conference, and school records and finished each season ranked in the top ten in the nation in passing. His final collegiate stop was in 1982 as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach under Johnny Majors at the University of Tennessee where he built an explosive, record-setting offense. His first NFL head coaching position came with the San Diego Chargers as interim head coach in 1986 following the resignation of Don Coryell. He spent two full seasons as the Chargers' head coach after previously working as receivers coach in 1983-84 and assistant head coach in 1985-86 for what was one of the most prolific offenses in the history of modern football. In 1985, San Diego's "Air Coryell" led the NFL in passing and total offense for an unprecedented fifth time in six years. From 1989 until 1998, Saunders was with the Kansas City Chiefs. Saunders worked for 10 winning seasons under the highly respected head coach Marty Schottenheimer again as a part of a top-performing offense. Saunders joined the St. Louis Rams coaching staff under the legendary Dick Vermeil. Serving as associate head coach and receivers coach with the Rams (1999-2000), he helped create one of the most dynamic and explosive offenses that the NFL had ever seen, and eventually helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV victory. Leading the NFL in virtually every significant offensive category, "The Greatest Show on Turf" established numerous NFL records for scoring and offensive production. When Vermeil came out of retirement in 2001, Saunders reunited with his old mentor and former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, as the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator until Vermeil's final retirement in 2006. Under Saunders' direction as coordinator, the Chiefs offense was the most productive unit in the entire NFL during that 5-year span. 46 franchise records for offense production were established and no team scored more points (2,175), gained more yards (30,470), or scored more touchdowns (262) during that time. Coach Saunders was ranked as the #1 Offensive Coordinator in the past 25 years in the NFL by ESPN and in 2005, and was named USA Today's Offensive Coach of the Year. Coach Saunders finished out his career as an assistant with Redskins, Rams, Ravens, Raiders, Dolphins, and retired after his stint with the Cleveland Browns Shownotes: -Start with John McKay -Being organized -Don't tell - Teach -Treat everyone as a number one draft choice -The job of a coach is to make all players the best they can be -You can't teach experience -Create an environment people enjoy being in -Take the positive environment and enthusiasm to the field -How the best approach the game -Dealing with your coaches -Developing a top offense -Don't ask players to do what they can't do -Protecting the QB Link to all Mushroom Society Episodes and COOL Clinic Speakers: https://soundcloud.com/user-804678956/sets/the-c-o-o-l-clinic-speakers Learn from COOL Clinic Coaches: https://coachtube.com/coolclinic

As Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals get ready to host the Las Vegas Raiders in the playoffs, In The Trenches with Dave Lapham presented by First Star Logistics takes a look back to January 10, 1982, when Lapham and his Bengals teammates led by quarterback Ken Anderson and head coach Forrest Gregg, took on Don Coryell, Dan Fouts, and the San Diego Chargers in the coldest game played in NFL history when adding in wind chill, -9 but with sustained winds of 27 miles per hour making it -37. With three future NFL Hall of Fame players taking the field for the Chargers in Fouts, receiver Charlie Joiner and tight end Kellen Winslow, it was Anderson and the play of Dan Ross, Pete johnson, Reggie Williams, Jim Breech, Rick Razzano, M.L. Harris, and other Bengals to come out on top in the AFC Championship Game 27-7 to advance to the first Super Bowl in franchise history. Lapham takes a look back at the days leading up to the game with how head coach Forrest Gregg used his past of playing in the Ice Bowl for Vince Lombardi to get the Bengals ready and what the offensive linemen did on game day to hopefully give them a slight advantage over the Chargers. You're going to love this trip down memory lane.

Former Charger player, commentator, and three-time special teams player of the year, Hank Bauer joins Clark and Ira to talk Chargers, Don Coryell, special teamers, and much more!
It's hard to believe that one of football's all-time great quarterbacks was overlooked in high school. But Dan Fouts, who had been around the game his whole life, took advantage of his only scholarship offer and transformed himself into a Duck great. Fouts' experience before his playing career was one that many looked upon with envy and awe, having dinner with NFL greats and being on the sidelines with some of the world's best athletes. But that experience provided him with a perspective that many people don't get to experience. That perspective helped Fouts to a Hall of Fame career in college and in the NFL, where he transformed the game of football through the air with legendary coach Don Coryell with the San Diego Chargers. He would have a 15-year NFL career, entirely in San Diego. Fouts threw for 43,040 yards, and was the first quarterback to throw for over 4,800 yards in a season. He also became the first player in NFL history to eclipse 4,000 passing yards in three straight seasons, doing so from 1979 to 1981. To Fouts, however, those numbers were never a priority. He always just wanted a shot to win every week he put on a uniform. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Time to take a look at a classic Air Coryell Playbook. An offense that brought the passing game to prominence in the NFL. Don Coryell and the San Diego Chargers lit up the NFL in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Air Coryell passing tree is something everyone has heard about in our coaching journey. Taking a step into the past, I'm going to investigate the 1983 San Diego Chargers playbook featuring the Air Coryell passing game. Spoiler alert: passing has come a long way. This week's takes a deep dive into Tom Flores case for enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Respected sports journalists and longtime Hall of Fame voters Clark Judge and Jim Trotter brought great insight to this conversation, discussing pros of the Flores case and possible roadblocks on his path to Canton. The goal here was to provide information from all sides and gain a better understanding for why the legendary Raiders head coach with so many Super Bowl rings has had so much trouble advancing through the Hall of Fame induction process.
2-3-2019 Passed Ball Show- John opens the show by apologizing for the cold he has and how it is impacting the sound of his voice. The New York Knicks made a solid trade with the attempt to save some salary cap space. Hopefully, this will lead the team to two max players. The problem with Madison Square Garden is the fact that New York looks at it as the place to be and because of that believes a winning team should be handed to them by the NBA. Yes, the Garden is full virtually every game, but it is full because it is owned by the corporations who buy the tickets up in advance. Stop with this silly insinuations that the die hard fans still fill the building in spite of having one of the worst teams in the NBA. John shares some interesting Super Bowl facts about the Rams and Patriots, where they each came from, their records in Championship Games, and the fact that Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have played in more Super Bowls than any team in NFL history. Finally, John talks about the reasons Don Coryell and Tom Flores should have made it into this year's Pro Football Hall of Fame class.
I was so pleased to enjoy a conversation with San Diego sportswriter legend, John Maffei. John is a 50-year veteran in sports journalism, an athlete, a coach and a major behind-the-scenes person that has made a significant, positive impact in the San Diego sports community. We spent time learning about John's life. Born in Chicago, raised in Pasadena, went to La Salle High School, recruited to play baseball at St Mary’s but chose to play at Pasadena City College and later at San Diego State. John Maffei shared his memories as a teammate of Darrell Evans while at Pasadena City College. Evans' talent helped lead their baseball team (and basketball team) to state championships. Evans played professionally for the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and the 1984 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers. John Maffei formed a strong relationship with basketball coaching legend Jerry Tarkanian who was the head basketball coach at Pasadena. John was a part of Tark's support staff helping him keep the game book while John was not playing baseball. Tarkanian offered John a full ride scholarship to Long Beach State when Tark was hired there (prior to his career at UNLV and Fresno St), but John politely declined the offer because he wanted to keep his baseball dream alive. We spent time going down memory lane of John’s time at San Diego State as the sports editor of the Daily Aztec and player on the baseball team. John shared a special relationship with football coach Don Coryell and helped him recruit athletes to play for the Aztecs. John Maffei spoke at length of his time as a manger in the California Collegiate Summer League where he played against incredible baseball talent including one game facing both Mike Scott and Jesse Orosco in a double header. We touched on a baseball tour he did Alaska playing in the Midnight Sun games, including sharing fun memories of Bob Moss (Hubba Jubba!). No story of San Diego sports is complete without recounting wonderful stories of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. John Maffei shared his special moments with Tony in the Padres dugout after batting practice and sharing Tony’s desire to make a positive impact with each fan he interacted with. It was fun to discuss so many incredible athletes from the Poway, Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Penasquitos area including Tony Gwynn Jr., Cole Hamels, Trevor Williams, Eric Chavez, Jaime Jones and Billy Beane. We shared stories about both Deron and Dominick Johnson, including Dom’s incredible talent as a basketball player before becoming a modern-day pitching guru on par with Tom House. I am leaving so much out in this written summary. We also shared stories about John Wooden, the San Diego Sports Arena, the 2019 Padres outlook and their minor league system, Qualcomm Stadium, Rashaan Salaam, La Jolla Country Day High School, Marcus Allen's incredible performance in a CIF title game, Ricky Williams, Alex Smith, Rancho Bernardo vs Montgomery baseball, Kevin Towers and so much more. 11-21-2018 Passed Ball Show- John opens up this show with some discussion on rhetorical Thanksgiving comments. Why do people cook for large groups of family members if they are just going to complain about it? If it is such a chore and an inconvenience, don't do it. Don't invite your relatives in from across the country if all you are going to do is complain about the inconvenience of picking them up. Good to decent MLB players have been taken off of rosters due to crunches. Hopefully, CJ Cron and Derek Dietrich will land new roles soon just as Christian Villenueva has by having his contract purchased by the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese Pacific League. John also brings up the possibility that teams are not looking at talent as much as they claim; they are loading their 40 man roster with players that happen to just be under the age of 22. Just because a player is young, does it mean they have the upside of the likes of Bryce Harper, Ronald Acuna, and Juan Soto? The Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists were announced. Tony Gonzalez, Eric Reed, Edgerin James, Don Coryell, and Clay Matthews are the most deserving of the honor. Once again, the NFL has done a great job of honoring the best players to ever play the game, unlike another sport we know and love. Perhaps a case can be made (being ambivalent for a minute) that the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a little watered down because of the amount of those honored each year. The Washington Wizards are going through a tough time- one that may lead to the trade of Bradley Beal to the Charlotte Hornets. The disrespect of NBA coaches continues to be an issue that should be addressed. While they are responsible for wins and success, they are not given the tools to do their job.
In this very special edition of the National Football Foundation-St. Louis Tom Lombardo Chapter podcast, we're joined by legendary NFL coach Jim Hanifan, who served as the St. Louis Cardinals' offensive line coach from 1973-78, their head coach from 1980-85, and the St. Louis Rams' offensive line coach from 1997 until his retirement following the 2002 season. Flanking Coach Hanifan were five St. Louis Cardinals football alumni: Johnny Roland (1966-72), Tim Van Galder (1967, 71-72), Eric Williams (1977-81), Bob DeMarco (1961-69), & Irv Goode (1962-71). During a conversation moderated by KMOV's Maurice Drummond, the Big Red gang discusses their memories of playing and living in St. Louis (5:00-17:00, 19:20-26:45), Van Galder reminisces about his days living with Joe Namath (17:00-19:00), Hanifan reminisces about Don Coryell and the impact that he made in the NFL (26:55-39:30), and Williams, DeMarco, and Goode talk about how different the game was when they played -- "total violence," as Williams describes it -- than it is today(39:30-45:19).
